England has Buckingham Palace and The Tower of London. The island has Morning Glory Farm.
The Athearns have been operating this amazing place since the 1970s. They grow all kinds of vegetables and fruit on the 50 acres of land that the farm uses; you can see some of this space from the road. They sell it in the picturesque farm stand that is about a mile from downtown Edgartown. My favorite time here is the fall, when the corn is abundant and picked three times a day, the tomatoes are just as juicy and ripe as can be, and the hint of a chill is felt in the air.
They sell lots of baked goods from their kitchen, including assorted pies, quiche, breads and muffins, and they have a decent salad bar for lunch.
(Please keep in mind that non-local food like limes and lemons are obviously not grown here yet are displayed right next to the local crops. The prices for those things are much higher here than any other place on the island by far. They sure look pretty, but they are not local and not cheap)
They also sell organic eggs, cheese, meat and other items, many of them from other island farms and merchants. You can find bath salts, honey, jam, pasta, fresh herbs, flowers and pre-made take out food. You can order your organic turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and then they close down and hibernate until spring time, taking a well-deserved break.
The people who work here are all relaxed, hard working and polite. (I have known many of them over the years, so I may be biased.) It's not always easy work, but they are patient and gracious all the time.
I wish the same could be said for some of the customers here, but that is hardly the fault of Morning Glory Farm. Sadly, some of the summer visitors are shockingly rude in here which can be disturbing to those of us with a mellow attitude. The same people who try to cut into the line and berate the hard working staff are just as rude in the parking area, which can be jam packed at key times during the day. But that's the island in the summer for you.
Bring your camera, bring your appetite and bring your wallet - it is expensive, but it is worth every penny.
