"Monvínic is the Sagrada Familia of Barcelona’s wine scene; it's iconic and dramatic (and, in this case, finished). Whereas the restaurant that used to be here is sadly closed, the retail side of the business is still alive and kicking, along with the bar (hallelujah!). So, pull up a pew alongside one of the bottle-lined walls of this temple and prepare to worship. The sommeliers here are at the top of their game. Director Delia Garcia has switched up Monviníc’s sustainability credentials, curating a selection of organic artisanal wines and cheeses you won’t find anywhere else. The old Monvínic stocked around 3,000 labels, the new one has approximately 4,500 references, the vast majority which are organic or natural, made by small-scale producers. With around 30 bottles available daily by the glass, a little wine know-how—or a basic sense of what you like and don’t like—will come in handy. Note that the list veers into unusual parts of the globe, like Slovenia and Greece." - Gemma Askham

"This ultramodern space—part wine bar, part restaurant—has a daunting wine list with more than 3,000 labels, plus a rotating list of 50 that you can try by the glass before committing to a full bottle. Skip the iPad and put yourself into the hands of your knowledgeable server."

A smashing place. As the name says, it specialises in wine and cheese. Some really interesting wines by the glass, with very knowledgeable staff. And we also has the selection of five cheeses, ranging from hard to soft. It also has a really buzzy atmosphere. We had great luck in finding, purely by chance.

Overall, we had a nice experience. The food was great the ambiance was lovely and in general the service was good. however, they do not have a wine menu if you order per bottle. Our waiter didn’t inform us that there was an uncorking fee (12€ per bottle…50% of the price of our bottle of wine) but instead told us only the price per bottle. We ordered two bottles of wine and ended up paying as much for a third bottle as we did for the uncorking which they failed to mention to us. When asked their reasoning was that they serve the bottles at market price which isn’t a problem just seems like a really odd practice for a restaurant and ruined the end of the meal for us, which was a shame.

Nice wine bar with good cheese and atmosphere. We bought their olive oil, it was so intense, we bought some cheese, they were so special. We bought the wine, they have a good wine list.

The first time I visited this bar, I had a wonderful experience. That was back in February. Unfortunately during my second visit, the experience was not so good. The staff had no knowledge of wine. I told the girl that we prefer dry, crisp white wines, and usually drink NZ Sauvignon Blanc. She said she would recommend a bottle as they do not have a wine list. She opened the bottle and it was the complete opposite of a NZ Sauvignon Blanc. More like a buttery Chardonnay. I told her I didn't like it and that it was too sweet for me. Her response was ' now it's open you have to have it' I was quite shocked as she had recommended this and it was nothing like what I had asked for. There was then a while drama whilst she asked her colleague to taste it. Her colleague told her in front of me that it wasn't sweet. All of this was so unprofessional and rude. It also showed that none of these people had any knowledge of wine. The first rule is that everybody has different taste buds! They eventually agreed to change the bottle and gave me two options ...both of which were disgusting (natural wines) but I had to choose one! This place has no wine list, so you have to rely on their staff who have no knowledge of wine. It then appears that you cannot change the wine once the bottle is open, therefore you are left with an expensive bottle that tastes bad! We felt that they gave us a bottle that wasn't selling and that could be the reason they operate this way. In addition the staff are all drinking wine in front of the customers which is also a bit weird and unprofessional. Lovely atmosphere but horrible wine, staff with no knowledge of wine who are getting drunk whilst working and no wine list. Won't return as there are so many nice wine bars in Barcelona.

Food was perfect, wines only natural but service just forgot about us after first glass of wine. And then at the end the waiter charged our European credit card in US dollars which cost us +10 eur and instead of trying to fix his error, he just shrugged shoulders and went away. That's not how you treat your guests when you make a mistake.

Very long list of wine by the glass, we each tried 3 which was an excellent selection. Also we had a very nice cheeseboard. It is a little bit dark inside. They have a very friendly dog who mainly likes you while you have cheese.

Most Barcelona wine bars are lucky that Mon Vinic closes at 9 PM. Mon Vinic's wines by the glass selection last night was likely the most interesting in the city, and by far the best priced. The only real competitor is Vinya del Senyor which is backed by a massive distributor of wine, but the glass selection at Mon Vinic is both more daring, and far better priced. I got to taste a 2008 Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley Oregon. It's rare to find Pinot from one of the best regions in the US producing it here in Spain, never mind to find a 16 year old expression of it being served by the glass. Most wine bars would only let you open something like this by the bottle. But the most incredible opportunity last night was being able to enjoy the 2003 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande from Pauillac Bordeaux, by the glass. This wine was a bucket list wine that I hadn't gotten around to trying. Part of the reason, it retails for 200-300 euros per bottle. I don't understand how, but Mon Vinic was casually serving it for 16 euros per glass. No Coravin either. They pulled the cork and left it breathing. I laid claim to half the bottle during my time there. It was phenomenal. While I was letting the Pichon Comtesse breathe I also enjoyed a glass of the 2012 Le Due Terre Sacrisassi Rosso for 9 Euros (Again the bottle retails for close to 50 Euros, making this glass price excellent). This is a bright and powerful wine from the Friuli region of Northern Italy, that's better known for producing higher quality Pinot Grigio. The wine is a blend of two indigenous Italian grape varieties I had never tried before, Refosco and Schioppettino. Even after over a decade of aging the tannins were powerful and grippy. It has a long life ahead of it. This wine bar has wines for everyone and serves them by the glass. Whether you just want to enjoy a refreshing inexpensive glass with friends or you're looking for serious wines to geek out on, they have it on the menu and, if they don't, you can open any bottle sold in the shop (and they have a really cool selection of wines to buy) for a small fee. I love the fact that they include wines with age on them, in their by the glass offerings. So few places do and they add so much depth to a wine menu when they're available. I didn't sample much of the food but they have an elaborate selection of artisinal cheeses and a member of the team was clearly their in house cheese expert and helped me find the perfect cheese for me. I'll definitely be back and I do hope they decide to extend their hours a bit later. For now, I'll have to start drinking a little earlier.
