Monument Avenue Historic District

Sad to see so much history removed from what was such an important southern city. The history of Richmond is beautiful and tumultuous and it’s a shame to see a chapter of that history destroyed. I’m glad I was able to visit Monument Avenue when I did to see the beautiful equestrian statues before they were ripped from the landscape. Each city in the United States is unique in its own way and to shamelessly remove historical monumentation that tells the story of that city is simply unforgivable.

Monument Ave. is still a beautiful boulevard. Though it has lost a certain character it's overall beauty remains. Perhaps with the passage of time a new generation may decide to erect new monuments to whatever seems appropriate or not. However for the present & near future this street does not need a new fixture. For the next decade or so things need to settle.

I need to remain neutral on the stars. Monument Avenue is not the same as it was a few years ago. As a lifelong northerner, I was given a tour of Richmond c. 2006. The highlights were the beautiful rocky river, the (old, former) Museum of the Confederacy and the old Monument Ave. I am sooo glad I was able to see The Avenue when I did. It was a true history lesson. The men remembered on their gallant steeds were there as heroic men of the South and not for their politics. I do not consider myself a racist in any way. (I pray I am not). As we drove down the old Avenue, not once did I long for the Ante Bellum South and it's "peculiar institution" as they termed it. I think the woke minority, in destroying the beautiful statues have done more harm than they realize. The glory of America is in our diversity of culture, ethnicity and history. Richmond is a BEAUTIFUL city. The Avenue is still a nice drive and the rocky river still flows. But the city's important, ante bellum history and individuality is dieing. Just because an historic era is shameful, does not mean it should be erased. What we do not learn from history we are doomed to repeat.

Confusing it’s named “Monument Avenue” when the monuments are gone. Could rename “Mao’s Men’s Avenue” or “Mod Amnesia Avenue.”

I saw it in 2011, there were already "southern" protesters to restore the flag on the Museum back then. What a pity. History is about telling different sides of a story. They want you to forget what true freedom once was.

What a difference 12 years makes! I visited Monument Avenue in 2009 and snapped some photos of the statues to Confederate "heros". In 2020, the Avenue's statues were ordered removed by the city, but Robert E Lee remained as it is on state owned land. That statue is now heavily fenced off but the graffiti that remains is a powerful statement regarding the pain these statues have caused over the years. The Avenue also features beautiful homes built around 1890-1940 in the Colonial, Mediterranean, Gothic and Tudor revival styles.

Nothing left to see! All the monuments have been torn down. What a loss, it's a shame people can't accept the statues for what they represent, it's part of American history. People can be so shortsighted, 😔

Since they removed the monuments that created “monument avenue” it’s no longer “monument avenue” and will never be again no matter what they do. Its originality is lost forever. Shame on the politicians and people in Virginia and everywhere that advocate the destruction of history.
