The 20 Best Restaurants In Astoria - New York - The Infatuation

"At this tiny counter service spot, you’ll find one of the few restaurants in New York serving comfort food from the Maghreb region of North Africa. That means Algerian-style pizza with sweet tomato sauce, a creamy garantita sandwich with egg and brie, and the shop’s namesake item, juicy grilled merguez sausage et frites on a crusty baguette. The small, often smoky shop has barely enough room for two people inside, so expect to stand outside waiting for your order. This is one of the more unique offerings in the neighborhood and totally worth the wait." - bryan kim, neha talreja, sonal shah, will hartman

It was delicious! The fries and sausage in a sandwich is a delicious combo! The staff there are the kindest people ever. They took great care of my brother and I. It felt like home 😭😁

Google
First and foremost their food is exceptional comfort food - from the flavor profiles to the way it’s cooked, it’s nice to have them in the neighborhood and a few blocks away at that! Their platters are good for a full dinner meal, they usually throw in a few pieces of bread as well. Their sandwiches are fresh and well balanced - overall delicious. Their customer service is top notch and everyone is kind. My one and only gripe? Their consistency with delivery. It’s such a 50/50 experience. It’s either they’re out of something you order or it’s cancelled altogether, mind you I’m not ordering right before closing but 2/3 hours before - really frustrating aspect of their business because we at the end of the day, we just want good food and to give them our business. I hope they improve on foresight and broadcasting, because it’s vital to customer retention. However! - never had a problem ordering in person. Cheers to Merguez & Frites! Love them despite the deliver issues and they are SO WORTH IT!

Google
Easiest 5 star I’ve ever given. Saw this on a YouTube video, came from Toronto and this was my first stop… despite some incredible meals on my NYC trip - this was the best food, atmosphere, service, everything.

Google
For what it is (a hole in the wall that serves Moroccan style sandwiches) it’s very good. I could see it being somewhere i went multiple times a week if it were closer to home.

Google
This place has always been great. I love their authentic flavors and generous portions for a fair price. Today I decided to call in for a sandwich while waiting outside on my bike. The cashier was super friendly and helpful and even gave me a slice of their awesome pizza to eat while I waited. Far more accommodating to a cyclist than I normally expect. Thanks guys!

Google
This is a halal Algerian spot with very authentic food. They have sandwiches and platters and some flavorful side dishes. I had the merguez sandwich and chicken sandwich, and a couple side dishes. The Merguez was amazing, very delicious sausage type dish in a hero roll with fries inside. There's not a lot of seating space so it's a great takeout spot.

Google
Absolutely fantastic sandwiches. After coming here for our first time, my friend and I had to revisit soon after. They’ve mastered the Merguez sandwich, although their others are definitely worth trying too! The staff is always friendly, and the whole restaurant smells amazing. If you’ve never had Algerian food, give them a try as soon as you can! Their Merguez is amazing and well seasoned. Truly couldn’t ask for anything better than what they’re serving here.

Google
Lovely spot with delicious traditional Algerian specialties. The Merguez & fries sandwich is a must ( the fries are fresh cut & fried to perfection), the staff was very friendly & informative. The pizza would need a bit more tomato sauce as it is almost inexistant. I will definitely go back!

Yelp
With all due respect to vegetarians and vegans, I seldom choose the vegetarian option on a menu. I love vegetables, but I usually love meat and seafood more. However, I came to Merguez and Frites specifically eyeing the kabantita sandwich even knowing it did not have meat and it was the best thing I had. The other food was good - we got a meat platter and tried their pizza, but the kabantita is chef's kiss. To this day, I still talk about it and tell my brother he needs to go here for the sandwich alone. So y'all should follow suit. Delicious. It's a small place, but they do have a bit of seating and the staff is so nice. Definitely support this local business; your taste buds will thank you.

Yelp
0.5/1 Ambience; 1.5/2 Food + Beverages; 1/1 Service; 1/1 Value A friend and I came to Merguez & Frites as part of our Astoria food tour and introduction to Algerian cuisine. The restaurant is a hole in the wall with an essentially open kitchen and some seating in the covered patio and stools along the back wall. The inside was clean and maintained well, although I do wish the outdoor seating area was a bit neater because the tables looked like they hadn't been cleaned for a while with many crumbs and stain remnants. My friend and I shared a Merguez sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich contained spicy lamb sausage, fries, and little red sauce (harissa?) on crusty white bread, and despite having such few fillings, it was incredibly flavorful from the warm and rich spices in the sausage. Neither the sausage nor the harissa were spicy for us, but there certainly is a light kick. The sausage casing is soft rather than crisp or snappy, and the sausage has a crumbly texture without at all being greasy or dense. The fries more so add the crispy textural contrast. My only complaint would be that I wish there was more sauce on the bread because it was a little on the drier side in an otherwise starch-dense sandwich. The side salad, which was similar to a Greek horiatiki salad with lettuce for a fuller meal, was refreshing and just what we needed to contrast a heftier sandwich. Lastly, the staff was friendly and the service was very quick without compromising the quality, freshness, or attention to which they prepared our food. This casual joint makes for excellent quick lunches or late night bites, and for $10, is certainly worth the value! I will definitely return to try other menu items!

Yelp
Ordered: Merguez Sandwich (~$10): with fries Pizza Kari (~$2) Aya's take: This Merguez Sandwich has been on my mind for some time now! I didn't know it was possible to crave something you never had but here we are. I've never had Algerian cuisine before but Merguez is a spicy sausage made of beef or lamb. It was soft, not as snappy as a hot dog or typical sausage and extremely well-seasoned and full of flavor. The bread was also super fresh and soft! The fries could've been crispier and the sauce was a little light. For ~$10, the Merguez Sandwich is loaded with ingredients and definitely a solid street food. The Pizza Kari tastes like a homemade pizza my grandma would make. It's doughy and the ratio of cheese to tomato was surprisingly just right. I was worried the tomato would be overpowering but that wasn't the case. Great spot on Steinway, would definitely go back!

Yelp
I was able to get good food relatively quickly. I love their fries the most and it's a small hole in the wall but great

Yelp
Merguez sandwich with fried within it: a solid sandwich, it's filling and satisfying without being overly greasy or heavy. The sausage is flavourful and tender, fries were nice and added texture. It wasn't too spicy despite the spicy sauce (optional). The bread was really nice and soft and tender too. All this for $10 is very reasonable, I would recommend. I enjoyed the pizza, the crust reminds me of the thin crust Chicago style pizza, it's almost like a pie crust, nice and flaky but not overly buttery. The cheese was kinda odd, it didn't seem like mozzarella, tasted more like a cream cheese, maybe Laughing Cow? It's definitely worth a try, and at only $2 it's a no brainer! Quick, courteous service. There's no seating inside but there's an enclosed outdoor patio at the front. I'll be back to try the chicken sandwich and get more of the pizza, the chicken looks really good too!

Yelp
Even in a neighborhood that has every possible cuisine, Merguez & Frites offers authentic Algerian classics you don't often see. Everything was packed with flavor. A fair amount of vegetarian options. The mahadjeb (onion tomato stuffed flatbread) stood out--you'd be looking under and around the flatbread wondering how they possibly fit in so much flavor. The Garantita is moist and flavorful, if you're not familiar with it, don't assume it is dry like many chickpea dishes are. Generous portions and perfect service. Clear menu and prices.

Amanda Z.

Yelp
Victor (cook) was so kind, gave recommendations and cooked the merguez so attentively. Unfortunately the restaurant is too cold, and the staff have to brave winters with little to no heat inside the restaurant. Outside seating has two heaters but they run low and we could not feel anything so we left early. Many others decided to take to go because the restaurant was just too cold. Owner should install heat inside, not freezing while laboring is a basic human right.

Yelp
I loved the Merguez sandwich, was my first time trying one. Simple, filling, and delicious. Really flavorful and I thought all the spices worked well together. Kind of food you want when it's late at night and you're hungry. Would visit again if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Small, causal Algerian restaurant known for their merguez. They are also halal. I had the mixed platter with merguez sausage, kofta, and rice. They meats were very good and flavorful! Their mahadjeb was very good too. It's similar to a paratha with a pepper, tomato and onion filling. Great food and friendly staff. Will have to come back to try the sandwich, garantita, and the Algerian pizza!

Yelp
This place has been on my list for a long time. As far as I know, Merguez and Frites is the lone outpost of non-Moroccan Maghrebian cuisine in the New York region, following the closure of the Tunisian "La Goulette" in Williamsburg a few years back. I had the garantita sandwich, which offered a flavor profile with few corollaries to other dishes I've tried. The custardy chickpea flour (besan)-based filling is almost like a savory flan, served with a mild harissa paste on a toasted baguette. The dish this came closest to reminding me of is faina, a chickpea cake served underneath Argentinian pizza when ordered a caballo (on horseback). Truly a unique gem in the city that I hope stays for the long haul.

Yelp
Delicious, clean, and simple. The merguez sandwich with fries was filling and delicious. The sauce really takes it to the next level otherwise, the sandwich may be a bit dry. Very fast and perfect late night meal.

Eric B.

Yelp
Very interesting place - wish I had time to sample more it offered. Went because merguez is a favorite of mine, but honestly I've had it mostly in French speaking areas. Had merguez & frites sandwich "with everything" and it was excellent. Owner was totally friendly and happy to explain to the uninitiated. Def headed back for another visit when I am not rushed. Small seating area outside with a few tables. Not fancy, (and certainly not a date spot) but pleasant. Good value

Maram A.

Yelp
Great food is very tasty. I got the mixed grill sandwich and the chicken sandwich. The mixed grill comes with murguez (sausage) and kofta. It was a flavorful sandwich and also had fries in it. They were generous with the fries. The chicken sandwich was okay. It was cooked well but lacked flavor. The chicken wasn't marinated so I wouldn't get it again. Service was good. They cooked the food quickly and answered any questions I had. I prefer to take my food to go as there is no ambiance here. It's outdoor seating and a few stools in the restaurants, nothing fancy. I also had a slice of their tomato pizza and it was decent, a simple crust with tomato sauce. I would get it again.

Yelp
Polite owner behind the counter serving great merguez and frites sandwiches. They were unfortunately not serving the pizza when I went due to Ramadan. Nice outdoor space in front for that part of town
google avatar

Samah I.

Yelp
I would've given this gem a five stars if it wasn't for the fact half the menu wasn't available at the time of my arrival. I can totally understand that the walnut cake is a Ramadan only special hence its absence but I was shocked to find the mahadjeb and hariera missing. I'll pop by every often to check but don't expect it to be there (came back the next day and it wasn't available still). As for what we did get, the merguez sausage was not at all what I expected. It wasn't hot dog squishy texture as I had worried but soft and more like a chewier kabab. The flavor was really great. Not spicy in the least (despite requesting it) but very flavorful and aromatic. The fries were crispy and a little chewy simultaneously. I wish there was a little bit more sauce to balance the fry ratio but loved it nonetheless. The pizza was a little chewy and slightly flaky. The tomato sauce was fresh and slightly sweet. All around good food and even better prices. Seriously special considering that Algerian food is legit no where to be found anywhere in New York (at least that I know of).

Yelp
Food was delicious. Had the sausage and fries. Yum! Service was too notch and prices were very reasonable. They have a small outdoor seating which was nice to enjoy the nice weather.

The merguez and frites sandwich hits different. My fav along with Kats deli pastrami.

Yelp
I ordered from here and didn't realize they had canceled my order, as they had run out of what I'd ordered. As they were closing, I showed up and hadn't realized they had run out of my order. The man working didn't have my order and had no idea, as it had been canceled. Without hesitation, he gave me an amazing layered potato, cheese and chicken dish and apologized. He refused payment and was exceptionally gracious and insisted I take what he had. In hindsight, I fear he gave me food he was planning to take home himself. The dish was amazing. It was like scalloped potatoes, thick with cheese and layered with chicken. It was delicious. I can't recommend this place enough. Not only for his kindness, but due the quality of the food.
google avatar

Madeleine B.

Yelp
I'm conflicted with giving 3 stars because on the one hand, the food was delicious. But in the other hand, I was overcharged for my order. I got a slice of pizza and an onion pie, both of which were great. I asked for 1 platter of a little merguez, kofta, and meatballs. I wanted to try a bit of each. There's a meat combo option on the menu, and I thought I articulated what I wanted. The dude then came out with 3 separate containers of each. I was charged $36 for everything, which seems like a lot since all I wanted was a mixed platter and the platter is listed on the menu as $14. I asked him if the amount was correct and he said yes. The receipt also didn't break down my order so I have no idea where this number came from. Again the food was amazing, and they gave me a slice of walnut cake on the house (also amazing). But I still left feeling annoyed at how much I spent for everything.

Yelp
Garantita Sandwich Europe once was defined as all the land around the Mediterranean Sea. North Africa is no longer considered part of Europe and neither is the Levant. But even today when you look at the food in the lands around the Mediterranean, you will find a lot of similarities. Take for example Panisse (from Provence, France), Panelle (from Sicily, Italy), Falafel (from Levant) and Garantita (from Algeria). They are made from Chickpea Flour. In Italy they are triangular shaped, rectangular in France and Algeria, and ball shaped in the Levant. They are all humble foods because they are easy to make, do not cost much, and are very filling. There are many places in NY/NJ where you can get a decent Falafel/Panisse/Panelle, but probably the only place where you can get an excellent Garantita is Merguez & Frites (located at 40-06 25th Ave, Astoria, NY 11106). Garantita as opposed to the rest is baked, not fried. It has eggs (so is not vegan). Typically you eat it like a sandwich with a smear of hot sauce (Harissa). This was Algeria's food during its. Independence struggle. It is today one of the most popular street food in Algeria. Merguez & Frites has a lot of excellent food to offer. Its signature Merguez & Frites Sandwich (Lamb Sausage with fries in a Baguette) is its best seller. The Rosemary Baked Chicken is outstanding, but go there to try "Garantita".

Yelp
The northern part of Steinway Street is still flush with Arab and North African culture, community, and cuisine and Merguez & Frites provides visitors a delicious taste of The Maghreb. The thing to get is obviously the merguez frites, preferably with extra merguez and extra spicy (which is mild by comparison if you're acclimated you heat). The merguez are full of flavor, the frites are just right, and when melded with the red pepper spread and the pillowy baguette...each bite is perfectly balanced and delectable. The namesake sandwich is obviously great, but if I had to name one item that is a must during every visit, it's actually the Algerian pizza. The crust is thin and tasty without being flimsy while the tomato sauce and herbs provide plenty of flavor so you're not missing the cheese. There are a few other options on the menu including kofta and chicken, which are also worth trying, but he warned the platters are extremely generous so you better have help eating! This is Queens dining at its finest: a traditional Parisian street food popularized by Algerians that is perfect when washed down with a Brazilian guarana soda. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Im a sandwhich person and their Merguez and fries sandwhich is probably the best sandwhich Ive had in my life!!! Sooo simple and the bread is crazy good!!!

Yelp
I came back to change my review cause they're food just doesn't miss, grab yourself a merguez and fritas sandwich with a Guava Jarrito and you are set. I don't like that they close early sometimes but the food is amazing. Papito in the back on the grill is the man!

Darine R.

Yelp
Not good... The place is dirty... The meregez sandwich was too dry. I was disappointed. The service is good.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome Algerian restaurant. Probably, one of the best North African restaurant in Queens, NYC. 1) There is not many Algerian restaurants in the United States. This is probably the only one I know in NYC. Last time I had Algerian food was in France many moons ago. 2) Get their mixed grill, it comes with chicken, kofta and merquez. Ask to get both the rice and fries, it tastes much better. 3) Also try their Algerian-style pizza, very good and simple dish.

Dale G.

Yelp
The merguez sandwich is unbelievable. I could literally eat it every day for the rest of my life. Super affordable too.
google avatar

Yelp
Take a seat Right over there, Algerian fare You won't leave The food that is there, is amazing I swear Of just what item was best, it's hard to attest Algerians have great culinary traditions! So fill me more up Why don't you fill me up? I'll have some pizza or maybe some Merguez Oh baby, the sandwich has frites right in the middle!! I'm losing my mind just a little Cuz the sandwich has frites right in the middle In the middle IG: @globaleatsinnyc

Yelp
Friendly service, authentic and fresh food, low prices, and outdoor seating (well, three tables during covid)--what's not to love! Got the namesake sandwich with regular spiciness and was not disappointed. The lamb sausage was zesty and hot, the roll crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the fries chock full of flavor, if a little too soft. Can't wait to drop by and try the pizza.

Christopher M.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place and get a Merguez sandwich. Great taste, just the right amount of spice. Will definitely become a regular part of my lunch rotation.

Yelp
Great little North Aftican place. We had the merguez and kofta sandwiches. Quick service, affordable and yummy.

Yelp
Very good Algerian food. Was in Chicago and felt like having North African food. Hard to find Algerian restaurants in US so was cool to come across this place while in Chicago for a weekend.

Yelp
Algerian food in NYC is pretty hard to find, i would have never known about this restaurant and its location, since its tucked away in a very small spot near the corner of Steinway and 25th Ave. while i just had lunch somewhere else, my colleagues from work stopped by and commented about the sausage, fries in a baguette?? Ok i am listening, so this place has a home made grilled spicy lamb sausage, harissa and fries as the basic fillers, this is sounding good, too bad i ate lunch and i am not hungry anymore. When we walked in, we were met by a friendly grill man who is taking orders and engaging customers as they walk in to the store. In mind, i could only sense 2 things, the smell of grilled lamb and freshly made Algerian Pizza. So my friends ordered and i felt the URGE to just try something because it all looked freshly made. So i got a slice of Karantita with extra Harissa. The first spoon full was fluffy, can taste eggs, chickpeas, cumin, spices and onion. The Harissa pairs itself perfectly to add a balance of flavors and depth. Meanwhile my friends are chomping down on a baguette packed with fries and lamb sauce drizzled with Harissa, so while the visual of their meal seems more empowering and engaging. I have to say my slice of the soft warm Karantita was delicious, flavorful and very filling, i was advised they serve it with baguette but in my opinion that would be too heavy and I really wanted to taste the flavors and spices in the food. Will come back and have a sandwich for sure as as try the tomato pizza which reminds me of a Sicilian slice. My only regret was not waiting for lunch but i am always ready to take advice on great food..
google avatar

Tania S.

Yelp
Rounding from a 3.5 because the price point was decent. I got the merguez sandwich and North African pizza from here the other day. The merguez sandwich had delicious fries inside and I liked the sauce a lot. The sausage itself was not the standout unfortunately. The North African pizza was a good little snack. I'm not sure how authentic it is to the North African style, but I'm not sure I would label it as a pizza. Overall though, it was a pretty good meal and a nice inexpensive option for the area.

Justin H.

Yelp
I'd never had a merguez sandwich in my life before coming to this shop and I can pretty much say that it was the missing piece of puzzle that I didn't even know was missing. The kind man behind the counter who is now forever my "Mr. Merguez" treated me like family the moment I walked in and most casually offered me some fresh sliced watermelon for free. His delectable merguez is grilled to order and placed in generous portions over a French baguette next to some of the best fries I've ever had (big deal). The merguez really speaks for itself and you'll find yourself chewing for 10 minutes straight while shaking your head up and down in agreement with its flavors until you're finished. Can't recommend it enough.

Zina O.

Yelp
This authentic Algerian food is consistently amazing. The merguez is very delicious and fresh. The guarantita is amazing and so tasty especially when you consume it warm in a sandwich with lahrissa . Keep up the good work so your business will flourish even more!!

Rick R.

Yelp
Had the merguez sandwich. Really liked it despite sausages not being my thing. Fresh ingredients in a crispy baguette. The Algerian pizza was excellent. Again, the fresh ingredients, especially the tomatoes and olive oil, make this shine. So simple, but so flavorful. Stole some fries from my nephew when he wasn't looking. Crispy and fresh. Service was excellent. Hameed, who I presume is the owner, was a real gentleman and exuded great pride in both his restaurant and Algerian cuisine. Outdoor seating available. Will return on a future cheat day! Lol.
google avatar

Yelp
Top notch!!! On par with the quality in Hamdania Chiffa in Algeria!! The staff treats you like family!! Love this place!! Do yourself a favor and get yourself a sandwich with Merguez,Kefta, Camembert + fries.

Ameena R.

Yelp
Extremely delicious food. Their dishes have a lot of flavor and are very fresh tasting (no preserved food here) it seems everything is cooked the same day you walk in and I dont mind waiting if it takes time because its just too darn good - you always feel like you had a homemade recipe when you leave. Their meat stuffed pastries and half chicken over rice is just phenomenal. The chicken is perfection and infused with black pepper, rosemary and garlic and who knows what else. It's always a hit whatever meal they are preparing- fish with potatoes or meat cubes with vegetables, etc. Haven't tried their pizza but will soon. The Brazilia soda they sell is delicious and great to go with the fast food they sell. They need to make their entrance more attractive and accommodating for families as it always seems to be full of men, otherwise the food is fantastic - a North African must try.

Justin K.

Yelp
Had the Merguez and frites sandwich, never even knew what this dish was until I tried it. Would absolutely eat here again.

Yelp
Excellent food. I bought the four meat combo for $25. Exceeded expectations. I definitely recommend.

Yelp
The best Arab food I have ever had in my life! The fries are a MUST. They are lightly salted and taste like you have been lifted by the Holy Ghost. If you are ever in Astoria you absolutely need to go to this place!

Yelp
Best Hummus Period. Algerian food is top given its rich heritage within the mediterranean culture, influenced by thousands years of human civilization founders from roman empire to recent discovery. Beside Algeria is the largest, richest and the most well built country in Africa...google coastal city and you will discover some are even better compared to European cities. Wish you can open in Manhattan

Shane M.

Yelp
Nothing beats a merguez sandwich. Staff are also very friendly and helpful. Tastes amazing

Yelp
AMAZING! Authentic Algerian food, like your grandma is making it!! Flavor is 100% on point from the mahajeb, the coca and the kelbalouz!! Please start a catering menu, would love to have this available for events in the near future! :)

Yelp
Wow - this place is new and deserving of attention. Perhaps one of the only Algerian restaurants in the area, the owner is really nice and you can tell right away there is real passion around his craft. The Merguez sandwich was fantastic as was the Algerian style pizza. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Walked in around midnight with some friends. It must've been busy because they were out of most items. My boyfriend ordered a merguez sandwich. Before making the sandwich, the young man working patiently explained the menu items to us. When we asked about the cake on display, he gave us 2 huge slices on the house. Very kind. And the sandwich was also really good.

Yelp
Amazing place, clean and friendly. I'm amazed how they make the food with love and passion also the Merguez is so delicious

this north african food joint had a delayed opening due to covid 19 and with bad timing and bad luck most places would have said see you later alligator but not merguez and frites and we are all happy about that. the place inside is narrow and tight like a pair of extra small skinny jeans but they have added outdoor street seating and a covered patio area that technically is considered eating outside. ok merguez is a semi thin spicy north african sausage that is popular in the magreb(,tunisia, algeria, morrocco) and personally i can eat many when available. you can order merguez or grilled chicken with frites on a baugette with harissa paste with pepper puree or you can get a platter with rice or frites (fries) with baked chicken , merguez, lamb , . i suggest you get the harissa on the side cause its no joke and if you cant handle the hot stuff you might feel like your mouth is on fire. they also carry north african style pizza which i have not tried yet but looks and smell good. prices are reasonable and the guys who work behind the counter are friendly and will make your sandwich or platter just the way you want it. the location is right off steinway and across from little morrocco which is another north african food joint that i also enjoy going to. 4.5 stars on my yelp meter.
