The Best Food Markets in Rome

"Rome’s largest food market, located in the Prati neighborhood near the Vatican, is devoted almost entirely to fresh produce and staples — fruits and vegetables, eggs, cheese and homemade pasta — with over 200 stalls and some family-run stands operating since 1924. It’s a practical stop before or after visiting the Vatican if you plan to cook, and standout vendors include Da Peppino (honey, eggs and jams), Da Gustavino (local bulk wine) and the porchetta sellers at Box 102 run by Arsenio and Ivo." - Regan Stephens

"There are dozens of markets throughout Rome , and while many are threatened by the popularity of supermarkets, the Mercato Trionfale thrives just north of the Vatican. Some 200 stalls sell produce, cheese, eggs, meat, honey, fish, and housewares of a quality that's hard to replicate. Enter from Via Andrea Doria and explore the butchers' stalls, then head to the back where Rome's largest number of fish stalls are clustered next to farmers selling fresh-picked produce."

One of the most unique experiences you will ever have while visiting Rome. This should be on every visitor's must see list. Everything imaginable from fresh food, fresh fruit and vegetables, household goods, electronics , to Butcher shops, and cheese shops., The Fish mongers bakeries an unbelievable experience world. You will spend at least several hours exploring. It's a ten minute walk from the Ottaviano, Metro stop if you're going to the Vatican.

True local Italian neighborhood market. Most stalls are filled with high quality permanent vendors not like other markets with high vacancy level.

Great market, with plenty of variety. But be careful, not all vendors are trustworthy. One of them is Azienda Agricola di Cola. I saw Mussini balsamic vinegar (yellow label) in the store and asked for it. The price wasn’t displayed, and when I went to pay, the amount I was going to be charged was not shown to me. I trusted it, since I had bought the same vinegar in Darmstadt, Germany, for €30. When I looked at the receipt: €50. I said the price was outrageous, and the person who served me said they had told me the price. I’m not good at Italian, and the person wasn’t good at English. Two obvious things: a) if I had seen or heard the price of €50, I would never have bought it; b) that vinegar is not worth €50 anywhere. Be careful in this store. Trust is expensive. The other vendor with whom I had an untrustworthy experience is a stall that sells truffles (I don’t remember the name, but the sign mentions truffles). They sold me a truffle with completely flat flavor and aroma, and the excuse they gave was that it was a type of truffle with a weaker smell. They sold me a truffle that had been harvested a long time ago and was therefore already flat, but still charged the price of €500 per kilo. The explanation they gave was ridiculous and shameless.

I love this place. People there friendly, multiple types of food, and don’t forget the red wine £1 per cup.
