On the Grid : McCormack's Whisky Grill

"Likely the largest collection of whisky in the city (aside from the Virginia ABC), McCormack's offers a serious library of whiskys, bourbons, and ryes along with, thank goodness, a knowledgeable staff to guide you through the process of tasting them. The tiny, wood-lined spot is towards the western end of the Fan on a street that gets fairly busy during drinking hours. But their southern comfort food (with late night and vegetarian-friendly menu) and, of course, highly specialized selection of whisky set them apart." - Mobelux

McCormick's Whiskey Bar in the fan is on point. I got the ribeye medium rare pictured, with rosemary potatoes and fried brussels, my fiancé got the smoked duck, everything cooked perfectly (duck especially), the steak is huge, nice char and seasoning. We sat the bar, our bartender Nick super knowledgeable and advised on some great Whiskey choices we ended up just doing the house old fashioned which was great as well. Highly recommend everyone stopping in big portions and great drinks.

McCormack’s Whisky Grill — A Must-Visit for Whiskey Enthusiasts Tucked away on N. Robinson Street in Richmond, McCormack’s Whisky Grill is an absolute gem for anyone who appreciates a well-curated glass of whiskey. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by a phenomenal collection of whiskeys—everything from rye and bourbon to blended varieties and single malt scotches. It’s clear that this place takes its spirits seriously. What really elevated the experience was the bartender, Ryan, whose passion for whiskey is contagious. He’s not just pouring drinks—he’s sharing stories, history, and knowledge with genuine enthusiasm. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a curious newcomer, Ryan makes you feel right at home. We had a fantastic time, and the evening flew by. The cozy atmosphere, combined with the exceptional selection and service, made it a memorable visit. If you’re a whiskey lover, McCormack’s is a must-go in Richmond.

We’ve visited McCormack’s Big Whisky Grill but this was our first time at the smaller more intimate location. Nick, the bartender, was absolutely wonderful and provided us with great recommendations. They accommodated my allergy and still provided a wonderful meal. The duck was absolutely to die for and I highly recommend trying it. We look forward to returning.

Great place. Unassuming and very personable. Phenomenal selection and Nick is a great host. While you’re there, pick his brain, he is a great resource on the history of whiskey and bourbon. Try the Brussels sprouts, fabulous. And the dates wrapped in bacon.

This is a quiet little place aiming for a specific atmosphere and hits it without issue. The whiskey selection is fantastic with, seemingly, hundreds of rare and hard to find whiskeys. The staff is knowledgeable and able to assist you find the perfect pour based on your tastes. I don't know of a word for a whiskey sommelier, but that's what they are. It can get pricey if you are venturing into the rarer or older whiskeys but that's expected. A great evening to sip and enjoy the variety whiskey has to offer. I had the opportunity to eat the smoked duck breast during my last visit and it was divine. Juicy and flavorful with fantastic pairings of sides. It all worked well together and I needed to restrain myself from licking the plate. Pull up a seat, enjoy the atmosphere, and sip.

Thought I would enjoy this place, but it's just overrated. First the food. Chicken wings were ok. Too dependent on the sauce. Not even salt on the actual wings. The mac and cheese...OMG delicious! Brussel sprouts really really good. Rosemary potatoes were pretty good too. The steak was slightly under medium well, but I'd rather have it under than over. Just a little salty for my taste. Service. Was ok. They do have a no hat rule so be ready for that. Atmosphere. Nice little quiet place. The bad. It's a little pretentious. We were greated well, it just gives off a snooty vibe. Some of the whiskey prices are crazy expensive. Our server seemed annoyed that I asked for an old fashioned that didn't have a high rye whiskey. Like I'm paying for it, I'll drink what I like. Also they charge you to use a credit card. That alone will keep me from coming back. You shouldn't take the added benefits from accepting cards and then charge your customers for that convenience. Also the owner seems to be somewhat of a hot head. Read all the low reviews you will see his responses. I'll wait for his response. Overall a decent place to go, but not returning.

Really nice little spot in the downtown Richmond area. We were a table of 4 adults and 2 kids. Adults all ordered Old Fashions and they were very good. The server was awesome very attentive knowledgeable about bourbons and suggested some for us. I had the smoked duck with grits and it was smoked perfectly. Wife had the hot honey fried chicken and she said it was great. The smoked baby back ribs were also ordered and enjoyed. This would be a five star review if they would have had everything on the menu. They were out of cheese so we could not try the Mac and Cheese which we had heard great reviews about. Because of the cheese being out of stock there were a couple dishes we could not try. Other that that overall great experience will definitely be back!

Whiskey was good. Service was absolutely appalling. Asked what time the kitchen closed, had about 45 minutes. Asked for a menu, never got one. Went to the bar for another round, was totally ignored while bartender chatted with other customers. Total of seven other customers in the place. Had been very excited about a first time here since new in town. First and last.
