On the Grid : Mazel Tov

"At this premium ruin pub, an open kitchen produces Middle Eastern specialties while the bartenders mix up refreshing cocktails. During the summertime, warm and bright sunlight shines through a gigantic skylight to fill the leafy courtyard, and the open-air tree-shaded seating area is lined with lush flower gardens; during in the winter, underfloor heating and hot drinks deliver radiating warmth. All year long, various cultural events celebrate global music and art." - We Love Budapest

7 Best Ruin Bars of Budapest in 2025

"One of the newest ruin bars, I found Mazel Tov to function as a community center and restaurant serving traditional Jewish cuisine by day and then turn into an upscale courtyard party at night with DJs and live entertainment, offering a fancier, more refined alternative to the other ruin bars." - Matthew Kepnes

I had a great experience at this restaurant and really enjoyed my visit. The atmosphere was very pleasant and made you feel welcome right away. The food was excellent – full of flavor, beautifully presented, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. I especially want to highlight the bread and spreads: incredibly fresh, perfectly seasoned, and an ideal start to the meal. Honestly, they were a highlight on their own. Overall, a restaurant I can highly recommend. I will definitely be coming back.

Mazel Tov sits right in the middle of Budapest’s action, and judging by the line stretching all the way to the street, everyone else already knows it. The décor is simple and beautiful, with the relaxed feel of an old courtyard filled with greenery. Even though the place was packed (apparently a normal state of affairs here), it was surprisingly calm and pleasant inside. Reservation strongly advised unless you enjoy standing in line contemplating life choices. We started with a Yemeni chicken soup that was perfectly spiced and generously loaded with chicken, followed by a roasted cauliflower with tahini and pomegranate that quietly stole the show. For mains, we went for the hummus falafel and the beef kebab platter — served on pita with excellent tahini, a seriously good chimichurri, a beetroot salad with cumin (loved that touch), and a Yemeni-style cabbage. Everything worked. Nothing tried too hard. Our dinner was accompanied by a bottle of white blend recommended by the staff. Great recommendation — so good that I forgot to write down the name, which I now regret, as I would have happily taken one home. Live music played throughout the evening, adding atmosphere without hijacking the conversation (always appreciated). We finished with a Jerusalem cheesecake, served in a Hungarian twist: on plum jam and topped with poppyseed cream. Unusual, unexpected, and very, very good. All in all — a great dinner, great vibe, and a place I’d happily return to.

Great lunch at Mazel Tov! Everything was super flavorful — the chicken shawarma was juicy and perfectly spiced, the roasted potatoes with tahini were amazing, and the shakshuka was rich and comforting. Special thanks to our server C. Krisztián — friendly, attentive, and made the experience even better. Big plus: the place is dog-friendly, which we really appreciated. Highly recommended, we’ll be back!

Wonderful Israeli restaurant in our favorite section of Budapest. I ordered the DIY falafel sandwich and my wife ordered the fatoush salad. Eveything was wonderful although the fatoush salad was different from what we regularly get in the States and at the other Mediterranean restaurants we have eaten at abroad. Service was excellent. I highly recommend making reservations because this place gets very busy.

Tremendously amazing food and ambience!!! We had a fabulous late lunch here with delicious cocktails and a variety of food! Our waitress Szabina was courteous, professional and knew the menu well! Flavours were spot on and their bread was fluffy, warm and excellent with our Hummus/lamb. We also thoroughly enjoyed the lamb stew with couscous and stuffed paprika. We can’t wait to come back 😊

Service was very nice, food was good but portions could be larger and atmosphere is great BUT! It was all ruined by asking for the check. The waiter presented the check explaining that 15% service charge is already added to the bill. He explained that this goes to the whole staff, ok. Nothing new… He continued by presenting me the card machine showing top options of 15 to 25% (?) and explaining that I may add a tip that will go to him by pressing one of the options shown on the screen! This is extremely rude! You add a 15% tip to the bill which is already not standard in Europe but I accept. But than asking for another tip is so extremely rude! It ruined the whole positive impression during the meal! Please pay your staff proper wages and teach them that it’s rude to ask for even more tip.

It was my first time trying Jewish food, and it was a great experience. The food was delicious, the service was amazing, and the ambiance with live music was wonderful. The prices were very affordable. I would definitely recommend this place and will for sure come back!

We came on a Sunday evening, the restaurant was full of reserved seats and they managed to find us a seat! Very nicely decorated space. Nicely lit. But made in such a way that it is ideal for eating and leaving. Metal chairs are not for a long stay. For drinks, I definitely recommend the homemade Ice tea. As for the food, I liked the soup and dessert the most. The celery soup is healthy, creamy and delicious. Personally, I am not a fan of babaganoush and the Yemeni chicken is somehow poorly prepared. A bit tasteless. That's why the cheesecake is perhaps the best I have ever tasted!
