"Repurposed Roman slaughterhouse During the late 19th and most of the 20th centuries, the Testaccio district hummed with activity from the sprawling slaughterhouse. Thought animal slaughter was moved away from Testaccio in 1975, most of the building has been preserved. In recent decades, areas have been slowly transformed for new functions. The place houses a contemporary art exhibition space called the MACRO, a university campus, and even an organic supermarket (open Tuesday to Sunday)."

A very cool place to have an art installation; the old slaughterhouse infrastructure is very much visible and looks to be part of the plans for the ongoing development. Lots going on there and plenty of space. The photography exhibition by Mohamed Keita gives a different perspective of Rome, away from the usual subjects of photographs of the city. It's very close to the Testaccio market so if you're in the area wander in, it's free.

Highly recommended a visit here. Two huge exhibition spaces regularly show artists of considerable interest. Lively atmosphere with the University students. The new covered market nextdoor door offers over 20 Street food and fresh produce stands, wines and pastries too. Space to sit both outside and inside. All near the hill of broken vases left from Roman times. As I said highly recommended.

I had high hopes for this space since I had read it was a contemporary art museum on the site of a former slaughterhouse. However, when I got there, the police who were on premise told me it was a university. There was absolutely no sign indicating there was any art activity. I wish there were more to see.

Very very interesting experience.... loved all that we were able to see. The spray can paintings, the installations, the little market at the back. Very very nice. Although we were a little tired. Sadly we had informed at the booking counter that there was live music and that we could not find. But we did see a light and music display which was mesmerising.

Amazing place, really like it. Very similar to “el matadeiro “ in Madrid, I think that it has a great potential and I’m curious to see what it will become in few years. We saw the world press photo exhibition, which was very interesting and funny (in 1 hour you can see everything even reading all the captions that are super interesting). Recommend it!

Had a great time in the museum. Almost got to meet the painter at the exhibition. The whole complex is wonderful. It has been renovated from the meat factory into the cultural center so there is a lot of life and sound. Check out the huge sticker wall near the southern wall and multiple graffitis.

An extremely versatile space for art, performance, music, public meetings has emerged from a slaughterhouse. The often creepy dismantled structures somewhat live together with the new intended use, making it one of the most interesting cultural areas of the city.

Went to see the World Press exhibition at the Mattatoio. The location is very nice and well equipped for this kind of exhibitions.
