"Known to Amelia Earhart as “old Bessie, the fire horse,” this bright red plane helped the aviator lock in her early record setting flights. Born in Atchison, Kansas, Earhart came to fame following her 1932 flight from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, across the Atlantic to Derry, North Ireland in just 14 hours and 56 minutes. As the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic she raked in awards from the Distinguished Flying Cross to the Gold Medal from the National Geographic Society. The six-seater Lockheed Vega monoplane was a popular choice for record setters of the era, including being the favorite for Wiley Post’s around the world flights. Earhart bought the plane in 1930 and quickly became fond of its nimble agility and long distance potential. She flew it not only on her daring transatlantic journey, but also on her August 1932 nonstop flight across the United States. Amelia Earhart famously set off in an attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937, and disappeared somewhere over the South Pacific. It is thought that she crash-landed into the waters off the remote Nikumaroro Island. Nearby on Howlard Island, a lighthouse tower named after her stands in perpetual wait for her refueling stopover. The plane was donated to Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute in 1933 when Earhart bought a new plane, and it was acquired by the Smithsonian in 1966. Update as of October 2019: The Lockheed Vega is no longer on display as the National Air and Space Museum undergoes renovations." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

"Opened to the public as part of the country's bicentennial celebration in 1976, this is the largest of the Smithsonian Institution's 20 museums. It is the most-visited museum in the U.S. (and the second-most-visited museum in the world behind the Louvre), containing the world's largest collection of air and space craft, as well as interactive flight simulators, an IMAX theater, and the Einstein Planetarium. More than 60,000 objects connected with aviation and human flight are housed here, including the Wright brothers' 1903 Wright Flyer; Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis ; Chuck Yeager's Bell X-1, the Glamorous Glennis , which broke the sound barrier; astronaut John Glenn's Friendship 7 Mercury capsule; the Apollo 11 command module Columbia , which carried the first men to the moon; the Apollo-Soyuz Hook-up; and Skylab. As immense as the museum may seem, you are looking at only 10 percent of the entire collection. The remaining 90 percent is located at the Steven Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, the largest air and space museum building in the world."

Caught and evening movie, Captain marvel, at the IMAX Air and space museum. The film experience was very cool but it was almost worth it just to see the Air and space museum empty at night. They have regular concessions and there is not a bad seat in the house. Very glad we took the time to see a movie there.

Always great experience watching movies here. Good job keeping everything organized for the Star Wars premier. Sci-Fi Sundays are awesome. All proceeds from the ticket and concessions goes back to the museum. They don't have a huge selection and they don't serve popcorn but at least it's for a good cause.

Google
The best place to see first-run Hollywood IMAX movies in DC, hands down! Tips: - The theater is general admission (no reserved seating) so show up at least 30 minutes prior to show time (or even earlier for the opening weekend of highly anticipated movies) to get good seats. - Best seats are the top 6 rows in the middle. - You must purchase candy, snacks, and drinks at the ticket window when you purchase your tickets. Better to sneak in your own snacks. - Don't bother buying tickets in advance on-line, because (1) there's a service fee, and (2) you can't print your tickets at home and must instead stand in the same line with those who are buying their tickets at the box office.

It had been several years since I last saw a film here, as I usually go out to the Airbus IMAX out at the Udvar-Hazy Center but I was downtown and decided to go. For IMAX films and big blockbusters, like Avengers: Endgame, this is a great and convenient alternative to going out Udvar-Hazy, and if you have a Smithsonian membership, you can even get discounted movie tickets. Both the picture and sound were excellent, I'm sure I'll be back.

If you're over 6ft it could be uncomfortable. For better viewing experience, sit closer to the top rows. The front is way too close.

Anyone that says you should go to a major chain theater like Regal or AMC to see an IMAX movie are questionably insane. This is the clearest, best IMAX screen on the area and the experience of walking through the Air and Space Museum to see a movie is top notch.

Google
Always so impressed with the screen here. Have been twice and each time I am equally in awe. The venue is well-maintained and clean. I saw Rogue one here on Christmas eve and was impressed with how well the staff kept the lines moving with such a large number of people trying to get in. There are concessions (beer, wine, soda, etc) , which was a nice touch. Expect to pay $7 though for a beer. Would go back.

Google
As one of the only TRUE IMAX theatres in the area, I love seeing movies here. Especially those filmed in IMAX as this is how they were meant to be seen. The screen is massive, the seats are comfortable enough (if a little too upright) and the price is satisfactory. IMAX is more than just a big screen. The aspect ratio of IMAX movies is different from standard movies and most other theatres in the area (I'm looking at you AMC) aren't real IMAX, they've just licensed the name. If you're close to the DC area and want to see blockbusters that were filmed in IMAX as they were meant to be seen, this is the place to go. The staff, for the most part, is also very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Came here to watch Jurassic Park on a Monday. So thankful that this is an IMAX 2D so no glasses are needed...if you are like me who hate wearing 3D glasses but still want to have the IMAX experience, you will love this theatre. It has a huge screen but the theatre itself is not as big as the AMC Lincoln Square in NYC. The theatre is located on the left of the entrance to the Air and Space museum in DC. We decided to also watch the 3D Journey to Universe prior to the movie showtime and it's awesome that people who had tickets to the next show (which we did) were allowed to stay without having to leave the theatre and just check back in. Since there is no assigned seating, we got to select the best seats in the house which was about 5 rows down from the top in the center. Try not to sit right under the overhang since the area is warm.

John B.

Yelp
I am a bit miffed that this IMAX theater is still in the Air and Space Museum, but the one in Natural History is gone. Regardless, I suspect the other Smithsonian IMAX theater out in the suburban Udvar-Hazy location is simply better. The screen here isn't quite as big as that one I don't think, the seats not quite as comfortable, and the sound not quite as clear. There's no assigned seating, and it seems like the theater hasn't really been renovated since my childhood visits here. Is it a nice big screen? Sure, but with what you pay here, it's reasonable to expect an overall great experience. If you really want the best big screen experience, this is no substitute for driving out to Udvar-Hazy; the only thing this one has going for it is location.

TaNeisha J.

Yelp
Who knew the Air & Space Museum has an IMAX?! I definitely didn't. The theater is huge. I've visited other IMAX theaters, and for some reason, this IMAX appeared so much bigger. Not sure if it's the movie (picture quality) or the screen, but the images were crystal clear and vibrant. My one complaint is the seating - the seats are super small. Seats aside, I would visit again.

Bert G.

Yelp
I watched an IMAX movie, "Journey To Space 3D", since it fit in my travel schedule that day. The 3D aspect was very interesting, and certainly added to a very well-produced and narrated (by Patrick Stewart, aka Captain Picard) production, although it was somewhat of a compilation of previous productions. The 3D glasses were loaners, to be dropped off in a barrel on the way out. This show was well worth $9 admission price, that's for sure. The theater is spotless, and quite well organized. The seats were comfortable, and were not of the reclining type sometimes found in IMAX dome theaters. This theater had a huge flat screen. The sound system was excellent, very natural sounding, and also produced those basso profundo vibrations of a rocket launch. Forget about munchies and soda. Not sold here. Thank you for that. The movie and seating provided a welcome respite for a fatiguing day at the Air & Space Museum.

Demetria C.

Yelp
Loved seeing Captain Marvel here, especially on the huge IMAX screen. We, like other reviewers, hate wearing 3D glasses, so an IMAX screen is a great compromise. The screen and the sound was great, and everyone was respectful during the movie. Would have been nice to choose our seats, instead of having to get there over an hour early for a decent seat. Also, the aisles are pretty tight to maneuver through. However - we'd definitely return for future movies.

Jacintha T.

Yelp
The theater and surround sound were nice! The concession stand was useless. No popcorn, and no food. :-( Only sodas, a small selection of candy and water. The only food place inside the museum is McDonald's (I'm not that desperate to eat that) or Boston Market. No bueno. So eat before you get here.

Andre C.

Yelp
I hadn't been here in years but I recently stopped by to watch Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Pros: The screen is huge. Massive. Beautiful, and well maintained. The sound system is good (not like will literally blow you away - I'm looking at you Dolby Cinema @ AMC Theaters). The staff are awesome. They were nice, polite, and efficient. Cons: The seats. They're small and on the older side. Like I said the screen is beautiful, but the rest of the theater needs an update. You also can't select seats beforehand (no reserved seating) so you just gotta get there early and hope for the best. The screen is so large that if you find yourself sitting in the first couple rows you will be turning your head from one side to the other to see the whole thing. If they take the time to modernize it, it will easily get that fourth star.

Brad B.

Yelp
The IMAX screen itself is INCREDIBLE. Saw Dunkirk today here. Loved it. That said... this theater is ridiculously overdue for renovations and my intellect tells me they have the money to do so. Being this IMAX theater is in the capitol, and backed by Lockheed Martin, it should represent pinnacle. It should not feel as if we've gone back in time to a seedy theater in 1970s New York City. The seats are so tiny it reminded me of my days riding the greyhound bus. Unless you're 5 years old or a petite woman, you'll be grossly uncomfortable. For such a phenomenal film, much of it was burdened by the overbearing uncomfortably of those worn out, tiny seats. Double the size of the seats, and put leather in. This is the only theater showing new films that I know of in the DMV that's behind on this. The heat. I momentarily thought for effect we were roasting to feel as the fighter pilots may have felt in the film Dunkirk, but in fact there was just very poor air flow throughout. Upon exiting after the film I smelt like I had just finished a 4-hour football practice, and then slept in the locker room overnight. It's very bad. Such an awesome museum, and such a shame an IMAX screen like this isn't capitalizing on its potential. Accommodations are so bad, myself and the three I went with to see Dunkirk all agreed, we won't be back until renovations are made. P.S. had to wait in line 20 mins after paying, only for theater to open up 4 mins before showtime. Any normal theater allows you to come in 30-60 mins before showtime. This is inexcusable. Step it up guys! Dinosaurs always go extinct.

Yelp
It is the freaking Smithsonian! Holy crap ya'll! This is it! Fantastic, just breathtaking. Here is the best advice I can give. Don't act like you're the star here. Dress comfortable. Wear the most comfortable shoes you own because you WILL travel. Don't be so cool and above it all that you Lose the wonderment and majesty of everything there. Pace yourself, and realize that you're not going to see everything unless you move to DC and dedicate your life to the place. Yes,.... they have that many exhibits and artifacts. Enjoy ya'll. This is a real treat!

Rob P.

Yelp
I've seen several movies here, documentaries and blockbusters. Seeing Interstellar on this screen was definitely was one my most memorable movie-going experiences. They used to ban all food and drinks, but now sell concessions, including beer and wine. Be careful with this though, because the rows are extremely long with no middle aisle, so getting up to go to the bathroom could mean disturbing a dozen or more people in your row. For your big blockbusters you want to make sure you get to the museum very early to line up. I arrived 45 minutes early to see The Force Awakens and had pretty terrible seats near the front on the aisle. I definitely won't make that mistake again. Prices are $15 (regular) and $12 for Smithsonian members. The member price isn't really any worse than a regular multiplex for a superior experience.

Jose M.

Yelp
This is my first 1-star review. I just don't know what else to give it when you get poor performance with little communication. I'm not a tourist but, if you are, be especially wary. I was there last Sunday to watch Insterstellar on IMAX. Halfway through the movie, the film stopped working. Eventually, the manager came out and explained, in a barely audible voice, that the projectionist was unable to make it work but that people could stand in line for refunds. The manager then proceeded to scamper away and hide...somewhere. Under his desk for all I know. When we went outside the line for refunds stretched all the way to the end of the museum because many people were tourists and couldn't exactly come back. Predictably, there were no employees walking around to explain whether we could come back and see the movie with our tickets on a different showing, whether we could call for a refund, or whether there was an online option.

Mark J.

Yelp
Just an amazing experience, we watched the last Jedi it was three months ago and it still ranks as one of our most memorable experiences we had while in Washington DC.

Mike A.

Yelp
First time going to this IMAX theater... WOW! I decided to watch Star Wars The Force Awakens a 4th time haha and thought I'd check out this theater and it was the BEST viewing experience especially for Star Wars! It's presented on 70mm so you'll notice some softer and darker tones with some grain but it all adds to a more believable picture on a 5 story screen! Camera pans of the landscapes and planets are breathtaking! Sound=the best that it can get! If you want a truly immersive IMAX Star Wars experience (not IMAX 3D), then watch it here! You'll smile the whole time :) Only negative of the theater are the seats. Not much legroom or arm space if you're sitting right next to someone. If you decide to sit in the middle of the row, make sure you go to the bathroom ahead of time because it'll be hard to stand up and shuffle your way out. Have fun!

Alice W.

Yelp
After seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens on its opening night, we were so blown away by it that we decided to see it a second time at the National Air and Space Museum IMAX Theater. I've never seen a movie twice in theaters until Star Wars, and it was only appropriate that we see it in the true IMAX experience on 70mm film. Only National Air and Space Museum and the Udvar-Hazy Center theaters offer 70mm in the area. We tried to get tickets for a 5pm showing, but when we went into the museum we saw the extremely long and winding line that extended to the front doors. So we opted to come back at 10pm. Best decision ever! There was probably only 30 people for the 10pm showing, so we were able to secure great seats without having to run into the theater like it's Black Friday. The screens measure up to 6 stories tall. The images are super bright and clear, 10 times the resolution of 35mm film. High-resolution, clear picture, and amazing sound system. Especially with Star Wars, the shots of the different settings and the sounds of the lightsaber fights was fantastic. However, the seats aren't super comfortable and there aren't any cup holders. Thankfully, it wasn't crowded in the theater so I could put my belongings in the seat next to me and my cup on the floor without having to worry about other people tipping it over. The Lockheed Martin IMAX closed on January 11 to upgrade to IMAX with laser, meaning bigger, better brightness, contrast, color, and sound. They're reopening in early March. So this really was the last opportunity to watch Star Wars in 70mm IMAX, and I'm so glad I was able to see it.

Adrianne J.

Yelp
I am giving the Lockheed Martin IMAX Theater three stars for being organized and having really nice volunteers/employees. The theater itself was very tight in the seats between the rows. I am short and was uncomfortable. I can only imagine what it was like for the tall people. We were all literally on top of each other. My friend and I saw the Avengers movie there last Monday and the entire time I was wishing I was in assigned seating at Gallery Place or at Landmark Atlantic Plumbing. It would be great if they gave the IMAX a makeover.

Mike J.

Yelp
So as others have said the screen size and it being the largest Imax theater in DC that shows mainstream movies earns the 2 stars but after that not much else that can really be said about this theater. Needs renovation and there online ticketing system is a complete joke! It's almost impossible to buy tickets beforehand and even if you're lucky enough to snag one, you still have to show up like an hour early just to get a good seat. Also, if you buy a ticket online they tack on like 4 extra dollars in fees! Really? For what? It's not reserved seating and you still have to wait inline so what exactly are you paying extra for? SMH, makes no sense! Here's an error message from their own website when you try to buy tickets online: THE TICKETING SYSTEM CURRENTLY INDICATES THAT NO SEATS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THIS EVENT. THIS EVENT MAY NOT YET BE ONSALE, MAY BE SOLD-OUT OR HAVE OTHER ISSUES. PLEASE TRY AT A LATER TIME OR CONTACT CUSTOMER SERVICE. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT CUSTOMER SERVICE. You call and no one picks up the phone. Ridiculous! This place needs to really get their act together. Local theaters now have assigned seating better online ticketing and recliner seats. So get with the program.

Emily N.

Yelp
The theater itself was alright. The sound was good and the screen was clear. The girls in the theater who checked the tickets were very friendly. However there was a predicament that upset a lot of people before the movie. I, with a group of about 10 arrived to the space museum about 20 minutes before the movie. We came to the doors and they were locked, so we tried to get the security staffs' attention. We knocked on the windows and shouted hello and they obviously saw and ignored us. They were on their phones ignoring us. We decided to run around the building to the other entrance so we could get into the building on time. The guard there told us that the entrance was open where we just were and we saw people coming in through the doors. We were upset and ran back around the building, exhausted and sweaty. When we confronted the group of security that ignored us, they were rude and claimed the doors were unlocked. They werent unlocked, we tried all the doors. I was very disappointed in the security and how rude they were.

Andrea B.

Yelp
Our tickets to the 3D "Tornado Alley" movie were only $6.50. It was a radical experience. I'm totally not a roller coaster person and I felt as if I was on a wiiild ride! The sensation was incredible! I felt as if I was there and almost felt sick. No commercials or ads, the movie ran about 35-45mins which was a nice change of pace after being on our feet walking around all day.

Ordale A.

Yelp
The screen is huge. It's about 45 feet tall if I'm not mistaken. The sound is deafening. It's everything those "Liemax" theaters wish they could be. I've seen The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar here, and think that the experiences were enhanced by the fact that I felt like I was inside the movie with the characters. So why the three stars? Good luck getting in to see the movie.. You can buy tickets online, but you can't print them at home. You have to pick them up from the box office. That's fine for one of their usual films like Hubble 3D, but not so great for a blockbuster like Interstellar. The line for the will call had hundreds of people in it and ONE guy working the will call box. I'm not exaggerating. There was just one guy. The movie was supposed to start at 11:05. It didn't start until 11:55 because the majority of the theater was empty due to all of the people waiting to pick up their tickets. I wouldn't waste my time going through that again.

Steve N.

Yelp
Pretty disappointed. I saw Star Wars Episode 7 there about two weeks after it came out. We arrived about two hour prior to the show ready to wait it out. Got in line with about an hour and forty-five to show time with about 20 or so people in line before us. The theater doesn't really have traditional vending for snacks. You have to buy bottled soda and boxed candy from the box office and the offerings are somewhat limited. That was a minor drawback for me. My main drawback was the picture quality was horrible. Perhaps it was just an off night for the projectionist or perhaps something was wrong with the film, but it was quite distorted. Just wasn't what you'd expect. The sound was great though, no problems there. The best seats for the show are about four to five rows from the top of the theater in the center. Though, it's very difficult once you're seated to get up to go to the bathroom. The seats are quite tight against each other and creates quite an inconvenience for the people you're trying to move past. So, make sure you go to the bathroom before the show starts.

Hibah S.

Yelp
I saw a special viewing of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan here and it was a really fun experience. I had no idea this existed inside the Air & Space Museum. It's conveniently located by a Metro station on the yellow line, so it's not much of a walk at all if you're traveling via Metro. Apparently, they have ''Sci-Fi Sundays,'' which is cool considering the museum theme. I was pleasantly surprised at how big the theater was and also at how many people showed up to the show. We were running late and arrived with four minutes to spare; while we were still able to grab four seats at the very top, the place was pretty packed. The employees also seemed friendly. The lady who tore our ticket stubs was all decked out in an astronaut uniform and that was a cute touch. It was nice to walk around and look at the exhibits after watching the film. Both the theater and women's bathroom were pretty clean. I knocked off two stars for two reasons. One, the rows are so close together and the seats are not that comfortable. If people need to get by you, you have to stand up to let them pass, whereas you normally can get by tucking in your feet at other theaters. Two, the options for food and drink are not that varied, and since it's inside the museum and they do a security check upon arrival, you can't sneak in snacks or anything either lol

Mikey T.

Yelp
I came here for Dark Knight Rises and was blown away. If you've been to any of the non-Smithsonian IMAX theaters in the area, you'll realize this is the real deal. Nothing can compare to this theater's five-story-high screen. Imagine a screen right in front of your face - that's true IMAX. The entrance is not the regular mall entrance to the Air and Space Museum - it's located on Independence Avenue. The seats were large and comfy but don't recline. They don't sell popcorn, but they do have bottles of water for $2.50 each. The crowd that night seemed respectful - no cell phones went off. They don't play any trailers or anything else. Just the movie. I'm definitely only coming to Smithsonian (they have other IMAX theaters) for IMAX. Tip: Parking on Independence Ave is plentiful at night.

Katie Z.

Yelp
Friends and I watched Dunkirk here tonight, and I really enjoyed my visit to this theater for several reasons. First-it's awesome to be inside the air and space museum when it's closed. No, it's not like you can wander around, but it still feels like you're in some exclusive club. The theater itself was great: clean, good sound, pleasant staff: the IMAX is amazing. As for concessions, they serve a pretty good variety of beer and wine (around $7-8 each), soda, and various candy. I'd highly recommend for a unique experience.

Steve H.

Yelp
WHOA NELLY! Paid $7 (group rate) to see "D-Day in 3-D" (45 mins) at 11:40 on a Thursday. No hassle, no crowd, no waiting. We were able to get great seats in the middle. The experience and sensation was incredible! ...especially during aircraft scenes. "I almost pissed myself and forgot who I was for about half an hour..." I'm hoping to go back when either space or flight 3D movies are available. Worth repeating - no trailers or ads. These guys get right to the show! Just like a good roller coaster, I'm ready to re-pay and watch it again! Interested? Take the Metro to L'Enfant, walk two blocks (then go through the Xray machine) and you're in! Turn right and hand the lady your cold cash. See a movie then go examine some old airplanes, Soviet ICBMs, and Moon rockets! USA! USA! USA! Bug tips: Snack before you get there. Sure there's an industrial size McDonalds in there - $6.50 for two teeny burgers and a coffee ("McGyp-off"). Like something in the gift shop? ("National Air and Space Mark-Up Store") Snap a photo of it and visit Amazon for 1/2 price once you're back home (your welcome, citizens)

Ryan B.

Yelp
What Mikey T. said, and then some. I'm originally from Michigan where I am very fortunate to have the Henry Ford Museum IMAX (which is IMAX perfection), but they don't often show Blockbusters like Avatar. The Lockheed Martin IMAX does by night. I think that is as good as it gets.

Perry R.

Yelp
I like the theater and the size of the screen and the way the seats are arranged before the screen. However, my thing is popcorn. They do not have or allow popcorn and I enjoy a movie much more with popcorn. Its unfortunate because I like the theater and they have some good movies showing there, but I won't go back until there is popcorn.

AL K.

Yelp
$5.00 al movies all weekend special this weekend! good deal depends on what you are watching. Some films are really old. You can buy tickets ahead of time or make reservations.

Patrick T.

Yelp
Caught a 1045 showing of Star Wars on Christmas Eve. Easy parking walked right in and got tickets fast. They have beer etc at the concession stand but what I really wanted an a ICEE!

Katie D.

Yelp
The theatre itself is fine but the employees were very rude. When I politely asked where we were supposed to pick up our 3d glasses I was told to "Be patient! You'll pick them up upfront" without any eye contact being made. We stood in line with about 15 other people for quite a while and then an employee told us all to follow him and brought us to a very long overfill line around the corner so we had to wait even longer and get worse seats. There were no signs telling us to go there and none of the 10+ employees standing by us informed us of the overfill line's existence. There is candy/drinks/beer available for purchase.

Matthew M.

Yelp
I went to go see the Last Jedi here and very much enjoyed my experience. While the theater might not have some of the seating amenities that other newer ones have, the screen and audio more than make up for that! This is a real IMAX screen and is huge! I love the fact that they are showing more commercial movies at this location. It's definitely one of my go to spots in DC for big popcorn type films (although I don't think they actually serve popcorn)!

J. D.

Yelp
I watched Star Wars VII at this location. This was my first IMAX viewing of any movie and I was pleasantly surprised. The screen is huge and the colors are vibrant and warm. More dirt/edges than traditional screens, but nothing too noticeable. The seats do not recline and are tight, but are still more comfortable and have more legroom than most AMC locations. Minus one star for their lack of assigned seats and their whole line system.

Regina P.

Yelp
We saw Normandy 3D in IMAX and were very disappointed with it. The film was very boring and I fell asleep. Some of the footage was repeated throughout. I enjoy wwII films and had high hopes for this one and it was bad. Save your $9 a ticket and do something else.

Uzi S.

Yelp
I watched Star Trek Two The Wrath of Khan here! Hugeeeee screen with a lot of seating but it's a little cramped for space. The Metro is right around the corner.

Mika R.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I had bought tickets two weeks in advance for the 18 January showing of Interstellar in IMAX. While we had seen the movie before, we hadn't seen it in IMAX and thought that you couldn't go wrong with the IMAX theater at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum: boy were we wrong! First: it was insanely hot in the theater and everyone was sweating! It was really bad! Second: at the most critical point in the film (2 hours in), the projector stops working and we are told by their staff that we can get refunds. When we went outside, the line at the box office for people wanting refunds was astronomical. Luckily we had purchased our tickets online, so we went home and called in the next day and got a refund. Because we had seen the movie before, we weren't completely heartbroken...but I can't imagine what the other viewers felt with such a huge technical let-down like this! Another issue was the volume in the theater. I have been in many movie theaters but the volume was just too intense, it hurt. And I wasn't the only one with my hands over my ears for portions of the movie. They should have adjusted for this, especially when the demographic audience attending a movie at a tourist site is going to be consisting of mainly families with young children. Young children especially have more sensitive hearing. ADVICE: 1. Turn the air on and make sure the ambient temperature is cooler! I'm willing to bet the projector overheated. 2. Turn down the volume. 3. Keep an extra IMAX bulb handy!

Yelp
They closed the theatre without any notice! Came all the way here for the theatre and it was closed. They say it is broken. Embarrassing.

Yelp
I saw Dunkirk here and it was great! The screen is huge and the sound is in your face. This was an experience in and of itself. This was my first IMAX movie and I will definitely be back. Additionally, the ticket prices were a couple dollars cheaper than other IMAX theaters I researched - a definite plus! Oh, and you can buy beer at the concessions before the movie... another plus!

Yelp
No popcorn or annoying concessions to be ripped off by here. Have a snack at home and then enjoy as the movie you want to watch actually starts at exactly the time posted, with no wasted 20-25 minute previews (read: painfully l-o-n-g Ads) for crappy, cookie-cutter, thoughtless movies you didn't want to see anyway. Imax was great and it was refershing not to hear the thundering bass of the movie next door's dramatic moment interrupting your movie. Also $12 was quite reasonable for Imax, though not sure if that was or was not our Smithsonain-member price.

Yelp
While visiting the Air and Space Museum, my wife and I caught one of the short films that they play here during the day. It was in 3D and IMAX, so I figured that it would be a pretty cool experience. We saw Air Racers 3D. At $9/person, for a 21 minute film - I definitely thought it was a little on the pricey side but it's definitely a tourist attraction. The film wasn't anything special, but the theater was very nice. Like most IMAX theaters, the screen was absolutely huge and, most importantly to me, had stadium seating. I really think stadium seating is the most crucial component to any movie theater. If this theater wasn't inside a museum, I'd probably bump it up another star but I'm pretty sure there's only 1 theater here. There also isn't any type of concession stand - the only thing I saw them selling was water. So, it's definitely not a real movie theater. Still, it's a solid spot.

Yelp
The IMAX theaters here and at Udvar-Hazy are the best options for seeing the true blockbusters in the DC area. I saw Star Wars - the Force Awakens here and the experience was phenomenal. We had to sit on the far left about half way up but still felt like I got the full experience. If you're there for a really big movie like Star Wars on opening weekend, you want to make sure you arrive early enough (ask the ticket office people what they recommend) so you don't get stuck sitting in the first few rows. The enormity of the screen may become unpleasant if you have to constantly turn your head to various parts of the screen to the get the whole image. Sound quality will give you the chills. You will feel like you're being engulfed by the experience - definitely worth the extra money you'e going to have to shell out. But if you're gonna drop cash on a movie night out you might as well do it right.
