I Hiked Past Slot Canyons and Ancient Ruins, Shopped for Cozy Alpaca Blankets, and Stayed at the Decadent New Hotels in Southern Peru

"Las Casitas is a luxury hotel located on an alpaca farm in Colca Canyon. It offers 20 eucalyptus-shaded cottages and a restaurant named Curiña. Guests can relax in outdoor heated plunge pools while enjoying scenic views and local cuisine." - Mark Johanson Mark Johanson Mark Johanson is an American journalist based in Santiago, Chile. "While Belmond Las Casitas spares nothing in the way of comfort and luxury, it takes great care to ensure that the 20 casitas that dot the side of Colca Canyon don’t distract from the beauty of the surrounding area. Each of the 1,300-square-foot rooms features a fireplace for chilly nights (as well as a hot-water bottle tucked into your bed at turndown), a heated outdoor plunge pool on the terrace (perfect for star-gazing), and a marble bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower. There’s also an excellent restaurant on-site, where guests can enjoy inspired Andean cuisine made with ingredients from the resort’s own garden, as well as a bar serving salads and other light dishes. Activities include fishing for dinner in the hotel trout pond, touring the canyon on horseback, bottle-feeding the baby alpacas, walking the trails that crisscross the 59-acre property, or simply keeping an eye out for the area’s giant hummingbirds and Andean condors that float on the thermals."

Las Casitas, A Belmond Hotel (Arequipa, Peru) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"In South America, there’s no contradiction between high adventure and high luxury. Even so, few hotels are up to the standard of Belmond Las Casitas. The location would be impossible to find fault with — the Colca Valley is one of Peru’s natural wonders, a region high in the Andes that’s home to everything from bucolic farmland to active volcanoes and a canyon that’s grander than the Grand. And the hotel is no slouch either: this estate spans twenty acres, one for each of its casitas, resulting in a small-villa luxury experience that would be difficult to top." - Tablet Hotels

This was my favorite hotel of the trip. I wish we had stayed more days to really get to soak in how wonderful it is. The casitas are gorgeous and our hot tub felt perfect. The food in the restaurant was also great, as were our cocktails. Feeding Wira was so much fun.

The best place to explore the Colca Canyon, created with great care and focused on guest satisfaction. Very comfortable rooms provide privacy. Excellent cuisine.||My only critical remark: the hotel is part of the Belmond group, and any attempt to arrange airport transfers or on-site activities is handled through the central office. In my case, it took six months to finalize a simple program, because every time a new person picked up the conversation and we had to start all over again. On top of that, those staff members at the head office were unfamiliar with local conditions.||My recommendations for visitors:||Be sure to order breakfast at the Tapay viewpoint.||Don’t limit yourself to watching condors — visit the villages in the canyon and try kayaking on the river next to the hot springs.||To have more space, plan your trip for a time when the weekly Belmond train guests are not arriving.||I especially recommend the guide Yanira.

Las Casitas was an immersion into Colca Valley history, culture and food. The setting is majestic and the grounds encourage relaxation after day trips viewing condors in flight and hiking at altitude. We felt pampered and treasure our humorous and educational encounters with the professional and very engaged staff. The property functions beautifully to teach respect and stewardship of the environment while delighting guests with delicious food and amenities.

We stayed at Casitas for 3 nights. Hotel is very beautiful and unique. Has amazing views at Colca river valley, very nice territory and spa. But that’s all the benefits. Rooms are old and poor. Staff is very unfriendly. Hotel has only one restaurant and the food and service there are just terrible! It’s impossible to have this kind of food and waiters at 5-star Belmond…. Looks like management has to do something with it or to be changed.

This property is a tribute to luxury and quality. It is expensive but well worth it. Each casita is 1200 sq ft complete with a private garden, fully stocked minibar, ample living and sleeping space and even a fireplace. You feel like you are in a private residential community and the remaining guests are your neighbors. The staff is very nice and they live near the premises so they are ready and happy to help. The manager is very nice. During our stay they had a small courtesy reception with drinks and a fire pit. The views are stunning and it is near the viewing point to see the condors. Breakfast is outstanding and plentiful.

I’ve stayed in a lot of nice places over the years, but Belmond Hotel Las Casitas really stands out. It’s honestly one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at.||The setting is absolutely stunning—right in the middle of the Colca Canyon, surrounded by dramatic views in every direction. The property itself is incredibly well-kept and just beautiful. You feel like you’re completely tucked away from the world, which is exactly what we wanted.||Our casita felt like a little home of its own. Super cozy but still luxurious, with everything we could have needed: a fireplace we used every night, a private hot tub with a view, and even an outdoor shower. It was private, peaceful, and incredibly relaxing. Waking up to that view every morning felt like a gift.||Everything about the place is designed to help you slow down and recharge. It’s quiet and calm—no traffic, no noise, just the sound of birds and the occasional breeze. If you need to reset and get some energy back, this is the place.||Food & Spa||The food was fantastic. Everything we ate was fresh and full of flavor, and a lot of it comes straight from their own organic gardens, which you can actually see on the property. You can tell the ingredients are high-quality and that the kitchen puts real thought into every dish.||The spa was another highlight. We had great treatments that left us feeling completely relaxed. Afterward, we did a short spiritual experience led by one of the therapists—it was something different, and really well done. Not cheesy, just calm and thoughtful.||Daily Activities||There are small, nice touches during the day too—like helping feed the alpacas and llamas in the morning. It’s optional but fun, especially if you’re an animal lover or just want to start the day doing something a little different.||Service That Makes the Difference||What really made this stay unforgettable, though, was the service. Every single person we met was warm, welcoming, and genuinely cared that we were having a great time.||Diego, the concierge, was amazing—he helped us plan our hiking and gave us useful tips we wouldn’t have known otherwise. The general manager checked in with us a few times during our stay just to make sure everything was going well. You could tell he really wanted to make sure guests were happy.||At the restaurant, the staff were just next-level. One night, our waitress sang for us after dinner—something we didn’t expect but that made the night really memorable. And the attention to detail was incredible. One morning, I grabbed some cereal from the buffet, and by the time I sat down, a spoon had already been placed at my table. It’s the kind of thing you don’t notice right away, but it sticks with you.||It felt like everyone there loved their job and took pride in making guests feel special. That’s what really set this place apart for me. The people make it more than just a nice hotel—they make it an experience.||Final Thoughts||This is the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left. Between the scenery, the peaceful atmosphere, the great food, and the truly amazing service, it was one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had. I’d go back in a heartbeat and if I could, I would rate this 7 out of 5.

Loved our stay here. The location is very relaxing and the food was so fresh. They have their own vegetable garden and it makes the food delicious. We did some of their experiences which were extremely fun. Definitely recommend the horse back riding. They also had a baby llama that you can feed.

A real gem for a getaway for a few days and be pampered by luxury plus the many hiking trails. The individual lodges are beautiful, spacious and full of amenities. The staff are super friendly especially Martha and Jose in F&B. It was also very nice of the GM to drop by on several occasions to chat and also to share his personal experiences of the region and activities. The only minor blink is our room became smoky when we used the fireplace; we suspected it was a partly blocked chimney. Apart from this, a highly recommended stay.
