we made resos for 5:00 pm on friday, parking is co-shared with sugar bowl, and we had to register our licence plate with the restaurant. we entered from the back and walked up three flights of stairs, passed the kitchen and washroom on the second floor to the top. i believe you can also enter through the front of eleanor and laurent, a french patisserie, and take the stairs up to the third floor. we were told that isa is the name of the owner's daughter.
we were rewarded with a charming dining room when we reached the top floor and felt as if we were immediately transported to paris. the focal point was the centre ceiling stain glass that illuminated the room with a warm glow.
the menu was limited, there's more liquor than food.
i had a lovely cocktail as recommended by our maitre'd, passion d'amour (ooh la la) there's vodka, passionfruit liqueur, vanilla syrup, lemon juice, champagne and passionfruit. it was suggested that i pour the champagne over the passionfruit and scoop with the spoon provided (c'est si bon).
we started with the escargots a la bourguignonne in the shell with butter and parsley. not gonna lie, it's fun using the escargot prong and mini fork to extract the meat. the house baked baguette was used to sop up the parsley butter. the pomme frites were perfection (c'est délicieux), short, medium cut, golden and crispy, it was fried in duck fat and came with an herb aioli. the soupe a l'oignon was too salty. the steak au poivre looked slightly overcooked for a medium rare, i had a taste and it was fine, nothing special, but the piece de resistance was the pommes duchesse, it was rich, creamy, and smooth.
i wish i had room to try their creme brulee and tarte au citron, c'est la vie.
