Nestled in the Financial District, Kokkari Estiatorio wraps diners in a warm, ski lodge vibe with rustic decor and a menu bursting with Greek classics.
"Not only is there a fireplace at this massive Greek restaurant in the Financial District, there are also spits roasting lambs and chickens over open flames on the wall. The smell of slow-cooked meat spreads throughout the dining room like a savory diffuser. And the high-backed armchairs throughout the space are perfect for drinking Greek wine and feeling glad you’re not outside." - julia chen 1, lani conway
"This longstanding destination for rustic Greek food is right on the border of where the business lunches of the FiDi cross over into the date-night dinners of historic Jackson Square. A menu of Greek staples like dolmathes and moussaka as well as grilled whole fish of the day are served in a warm, cozy dining room with a crackling fireplace. The lemon-oregano lamb riblets are a must-try." - Dianne de Guzman
"There aren’t a lot of Greek restaurants in San Francisco, but even if there were places on every corner (Souvla is trying), Kokkari would still be one of the best. Everything at this place from kolokithokeftethes (crispy zucchini cakes) to their braised lamb shank that falls off the bone is delicious, and the roaring fireplace is a great backdrop for any birthday or special occasion. This place only takes reservations over the phone, and even if you hate dialing more than paying your actual phone bill, it’s worth it." - will kamensky
"When a corporate card is involved and you want to feel Willie Brown-levels of importance, get to Kokkari. The Greek restaurant in Jackson Square has crisp white tablecloths, a roaring fireplace (which fills the dining room with whiffs of roasting chickens and lamb shanks on spits), and high-backed, throne-like armchairs heavier than your office printer. Bread baskets are on hand to sop up the sauces from excellent lamb chops and chili-crusted feta, and there’s plenty of wine for any potential contract-closing toasts." - ricky rodriguez, julia chen 1, patrick wong
"At this fancy Greek spot in the Financial District, you’ll sink into a plush armchair that belongs in the library from Clue and stare at the fireplace blazing away in the back. But before you fill up on lamb chops and grilled artichokes, spend some time with the complimentary basket of fresh-baked bread, which hits the white tablecloth before you’ve even put your bag down. It’s served with a glug of olive oil and constantly refilled with more slices by buttoned-up staff." - julia chen 1, patrick wong
