Yelp
Visited Kōjin for an year end meal with my partner to take advantage of a gift card we'd been saving.
As an ovo-lacto vegetarian, I wasn't really expecting very much from what, at first glance, seemed like a meat-centric menu. However I chose to fine at Kōjin vs. the noodle bar because Kōjin's menu had more variety.
Curious about the cooking process and maybe also because I'm nosy about other people's orders, I reserved seating at the Chef's counter---which revealed dining tip #1: you get a free bar snack if you sit here! Just be prepared for some heat, though there's graciously no smokiness.
Looking at the Yelp reviews, I knew I had to try the flatbread, so we ordered the grass-fed butter with spiced honey and pepper sauce. This was both me and partner's highlight. The flatbread were light and fluffy almost like pancakes and the butter and spiced honey were dreamy together! Personally the pepper sauce was not spicy, hence I'm not calling it a hot sauce, but you do get the fragrance of the pepper, which to me, showcases the ingredients.
We were between the smoked beet salad and the watercress, and decided on the latter because our server told us the beet is just shredded and smoked, so it's not going to be warm. This proved to be a great choice for us, because the watercress salad included fire roasted yams, with certain pieces toasted to a contrastive crunchiness, tossed with peanuts and a really good dressing.
The bar snack freebie we got were roasted carrots in a yogurt sauce with crunchy quinoa on top. We weren't expecting to get a complimentary snack just for sitting at the Chef's counter, so it was a real treat.
For our main, my partner got the $37 steak, which came with fries and fire roasted broccoli tossed in Donair and mayonnaise, lots of which I helped myself to, and we also shared the cheesey mashed potatoes and the roasted apple and squash.
Of all of these the standout for us both is the side of broccoli. It was just so unlike anything we've had. While the mashed potatoes were good, in retrospect I would have ordered the roasted brussel sprouts instead, but if you like potatoes and cheese, you won't be disappointed. All in all, this was a perfect year-end dinner and having been to Noodle Bar, Daishō and now Kōjin, I have to say Kōjin is by far my fav.
Even without a gift card, I would definitely come back for the exceptional service, the flatbread - - a great snack for two, and the salads. For a seemingly meat-centric restaurant, Kōjin has some great, must-try vegetarian friendly dishes!
