Kex Hostel Reykjavik

Excellent customer service! I left my glasses in my room the day I left and with a payment for shipping, the staff sent my glasses back to me. I was so grateful. The rooms are clean and the hostel is run like a tight ship. I enjoyed my stay and would definitely go back. Construction hinders the outdoor entrance but did not make a difference in my overall experience.

Generally enjoyed my stay. Staff super helpful. Cleaners on point in bathrooms. Unfortunately we didn't get much warning at all about some works on the lower floors until a few days before our stay and our room was right by the works. Luckily the noise didn't really disturb us too early. Downside was this meant the restaurant was completely out of action and was one of the main reasons we pickled this hostel. Live and learn I guess and just some bad luck. The kitchen was also fairly small and often did not seem appropriately stocked for the amount of large groups that were staying. I would say that's my main criticism. Overall enjoyed my stay and would be intrigued to see once the works are all finished.

Fun atmosphere! Definitely a hostel so everything is shared. They were under construction when I visited. 4/5 stars because it is a bit musty and wet feeling like other reviews have said. However, I believe their construction is working to address that. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Held my bags in a locked room while I explored the city after checking out. Recommend staying there!

It’s a hostel, first and foremost, so expect to be surrounded by youths and adventurous adults who all have their ideas about what personal space means. Pros: very close to the water, pretty central location to Reykjavik's big highlights, comfy beds, cleaning staff that seems efficient with turn around and having to clean many bathrooms (again, it’s a hostel- so it’s still going to give off some college dorm vibes), funky decor and vibe. Cons: ugh. Let’s start with getting there- if you are unsure if you’re in the right place, you are- it’s just impossible to know unless you spot the one piece of plywood that has the name spray painted on it in orange that’s on the “door”. Or if you see other folks also staring at their phones wondering where the hell they are. The entire front is taken over by construction and there is no signage. Only after you book will you likely get an email saying a vague thing about construction happening to improve the place, but this doesn’t detail anything about how the construction has temporarily closed two floors of the hostel- meaning there is currently no bar, restaurant, music, lounge, barbershop thingy, pizza, nada. So if you’re expecting 2/3 of what they advertise you will not have that and they will not tell you that at any point. This place is not suitable for anyone unable to climb stairs. The rooms are fine minus the outlets/lights that don’t work. The power went out my first night and I guess there’s no generator. Hot water is not constant. Iceland has so much to do so if you only need a place to sleep, it checks off that box. Hopefully this helps fellow travelers, because false advertising sucks. And Iceland was so great with updates everywhere else!

One of the must stay hostels in the country, probably one of the best places I stayed. Quite unique, loved the decoration and 70s style, I stayed in a private room, which was good enough. There reception area is the best place to hang out. I would consider this one to be a rather fancy or even 5 star hostel. The staff are great, they even got a kitchen, where you can get some nice baked pizza. The only thing they don’t have is an elevator, that would have been nice. I would love to stay there again.

There's big construction at the moment but nonetheless the location is pretty awesome...right at the water. the receptionist Thomas is the absolute best..super friendly and helpful. Can definitely recommend this place. Also the prices are fair for Iceland. thanks again to Thomas for helping me with locking my bicycle so spontaneously :)

Very charming and cost efficient, especially compared to the rest of central Reykjavik, £25/night! There's a bar and kitchen that serves food on the second floor, a great place to meet other travellers, and it's a popular spot for locals, too! I wouldn't recommend the breakfast, it was disappointing. There's plenty of bakeries and breakfast restaurants around, but the pizzas served in the evening are great!

The staff was so so friendly here!! Most of the things I disliked here were about the other people staying here, but that's something that should be expected when choosing a hostel rather than a hotel. You can also grab free earplugs if people are being too noisy. Rooms: I stayed with 1 friend, and we shared the double bed room, so we were not staying with strangers. The room was clean and had a great waterfront view! Each room was decorated uniquely and had some books and trinkets. I personally liked the vibes. You could also control the heating of the room and there were 2 tables to put stuff. The bathrooms were shared with other inhabitants, but on the upper floor, the bathroom and shower rooms could be locked and felt very private. I recommend bringing flip flops for the showers if you feel uncomfortable about sharing them with strangers. Service: The staff were so nice! They let us keep our luggage in their storage room overnight during our 2 day tours and always made sure we got a room with a nice view! On the last night, we checked in (we checked in 3 separate times because of different tours), and the person at front desk upgraded our room for free since it was our last night in iceland! The bigger room had a couch and private bathroom and shower/bathtub! (The photos are of this room). They also let us store our luggage after check out until our bus came and gave us free croissants! Location: It was very close to the main road and also close to the coast! I thought the location was perfect because hotels on the main road with the shops aren't as accessible for busses. Due to the hostel's location, most of our busses picked us up in front of the hostel, and we didn't have to walk to the bus stops. That's being said, bus stop #9 is only a 5min walk away! Just a note that when I stayed here, the building was under construction, so there was no restaurant or bar. I believe they used to have one and are remodeling it right now.
