We have been going to Kelleys Island for 4 years now, and never manage to make it to the winery. Well, we had some really bad weather on the day we were supposed to leave and decided not to risk the trip on the lake back to Rocky River.
WHAT A GREAT PLACE!
I'm not a big wine drinker (I know what I like, but don't understand wine), but this was a fun place. I'm certain wine snobs would find it pedestrian. I loved it. The wine was ok. I enjoyed their version of the vidal blanc.
The FOOD however, was amazing. We were there two days in a row - on the first day, we had the white sangria, the mussels and a pizza. The pizza was ok. Nothing special, but tasty. The mussles were amazing. Served in a tomato bisque with bacon. We were all drinking the bisque with the used shells.
The second day, we stuck to regular wine, and we ordered a fig balsamic flatbread, and an order of lamb sliders. The quality of both were way beyond anything I would expect on the island. The flatbread was practically perfect, and I'm craving the balsamic right now.
We still had bad weather, so we went to the large wall of games, grabbed a Scrabble game, and sat on the porch watching the rain, drinking wine, and enjoying the day. Could not have been a more pleasant way to spend a rainy day.
The interior is quaint, and the staff is friendly. We ate our flatbread and sliders at the bar on day two, and ordered a few glasses of wine. Then we realized we wanted more wine for the porch. The bartender could have charged us for the separate glasses we originally purchased, but instead just charged us for another bottle.
We are returning to our last Kelleys trip this weekend. You can be sure the winery is on our list of stops.
