The upscale outdoor mall is a scene cut right from a Kate Hudson lifestyle blog, but once you navigate through a seemingly endless row of L’Occitanes, you’ll find John’s Garden. The 40-year-old sandwich shop/window is a Malibu classic, serving simple and excellent sandwiches at decent prices ($8-12 a sandwich). It's changed a few hands in its 40 years of business, but the sandwich menu has kept to the same standards of freshness and goodness the whole time. Every regular has their favorite, and ours is the Surfer Princess—a perfect turkey-on-wheat piled high with sprouts, avocado salad, and Vegenaise. It pairs well with the coconut-macadamia-chocolate-chip cookie. You can grab a seat by the swings so the kids can play through lunch. John’s has been making no-frills deli sandwiches at reasonable prices (for Malibu) for a while now, and though it’s built quite a following, you never have to wait too long to get your food.
