"Journey to Modern Istanbul The lifeblood of modern Istanbul is the two-mile-long pedestrian street Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), running from Taksim Square to the Tünel train station. It's equal parts touristy and local, commerce and culture, and strolling down the avenue to shop, dine, or just socialize is a favorite pastime of many Istanbullus. (The beloved red-and-white tram is out of service for the foreseeable future while the street gets some much-needed maintenance.) Though many complain about encroaching international chain stores and shopping malls taking the thoroughfare's distinct character away, there are still plenty of gems if you follow the backstreets and duck into the historic passages. Don't forget to look up: Many of the art nouveau and Ottoman-era buildings house rooftop cafés and businesses above street level."
"A Side Street off Istiklal Caddesi The great shopping street of more modern Istanbul , Istiklal Caddesi, is across the Bosphorus from the old Sultanahmet. It's packed with lovely sidestreets and shops. By Patricia Irish"

Probably the best shopping street for tourist, stay active even at 10pm! Lot more variety thx the shops at the old town, a lots of restaurants with all kinds of food. Worth a visit if you don’t buy anything but to appreciate the atmosphere here.

Istiklal street! Only time its not busy is 6am. Lots of shops and restaurants to go. Tram starts around 730am At taksim square. I recommend trying it in the morning . I tried the tram at 820am. Not crowded. Use istanbulkart. Theres lots of stop in between. Tram stop signs are small. P.S- be careful of strangers, met one at taksim square. I was lucky i was alert

It’s a very average street. Better at night. Only thing keeping it worth visiting and taking photos is the tram. It’s bit over hyped. If you’ve visited high streets in Europe you’ll not find it that interesting.

It was a fun walk if you intend to shop, the tram will always get crowded. Know that you need to queue right at its stop station, not where people make their own line in front of the tram. You can try the tram in Kadikoy (Asian side) instead, it's a loop line and you can stay as long as you want there.

A very nice street full of life, stores and colors. It can be quite packed but it's part of the charm. I highly recommend taking a stroll there during the evening.

This street was lively and crowded, with shops and stalls packed along both sidewalks.
When I visited, I was surprised to see many police officers patrolling with guns.
