"A fun fact: Portland has the ideal climate for roses, thanks to its warm dry summers, mild winters, and heavy clay soils. During World War I, nursery owners began planning a large rose garden to protect European rose species, which became the International Rose Test Garden in 1917."

Beautiful Japanese garden where one can get away from the city noise and find some zen. Also a great spot to take some photographs of nature. The gallery is a great addition to the garden, and the cafe a wonderful spot to relax and have tea in the surround of the beautiful outdoors.

International Rose Garden is located in Washington Park just west of Downtown Portland. If your in the vicinity or area during the best times of the year, generally late spring and summer, you should surely add this must see and do Itinerary, very beautiful, colorful and fragrant. Parking can be limited during afternoon hours on weekdays and weekends, so be prepared to spend some time there on that issue, otherwise i think the whole family will enjoy the Garden as well as the other attractions here. Gift shop and Snack Shack nearby.

Had to stop by to observe the beauty of roses - at no cost either! It was astounding to see how many large and tall roses were available. Very unique spot to see many different varieties. I was very impressed by how well people grew the roses, and how tourists respect the artists enough to not steal any of them (there is a hefty fine). It is a bit difficult to find and does get crowded, even on a Sunday. If you play tennis, there are tennis courts right next door. Just an amazing place to stop by.

Need to know info. Parting can be a hassle, but not always. They do have busses that help with this. You can see the entire place in about 45 minutes but I'd recommend that you plan about 1.5 hours to really be able to take in all the beauty and detail it has to offer. They have a rotating selection of Bonsai trees outside, and if you want to see more bonsai trees they have more upstairs from the gift shop. Including a 500 year old juniper. This place is just amazing. After my first visit I was hooked and bought a year membership. Which was a lot less then I expect. Not only that but you can apply the cost of your tickets to the membership. When the Japanese ambassador visited the Portland Japanese Garden, he proclaimed it to be “the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan.” The attention to detail is outstanding and from what I can tell they use authentic methods to meticulously maintain everything.

Wear your walking shoes. Get your hat. Put on some sun screen and make sure your phone has enough power for all the pictures you’ll want to take. This is the best rose garden!! It’s the biggest one I’ve visited yet and definitely have the most fragrant roses. It’s hard to choose the best rose. But I would say, when you visit, look for Mr. Lincoln. It’s a very dark, vibrant red rose and smells amazing. Parking is easy. There is no entrance fee. And you’ll want to give yourself at least an hour to stroll through this garden.

Beautiful place to go by yourself or take the family, you could literally spend the whole day just admiring the roses and smelling their wonderful fragrance. There is no entrance fee, they have all the facilities you'll need, they have an amphitheatre where they'll have scheduled plays, also a good place to sit and have a picnic, the Rose Garden is my favorite place to go every year.

As you drive through a neighborhood ascending up to the park you are surrounded by the most beautiful trees. Tall Japanese maples, Madrone, Rhododendrons and conifers. Parking lot and roadside spots available. Bathrooms too. ADA compliance seen. The test garden was amazing. Do not pick the roses. But you can smell all you want.
