The 25 Best Things to Do in Budapest (Updated 2025)

"I appreciated the Hungarian National Gallery for its focus on Hungarian artists and history — housed in Buda Castle, it contains paintings and sculptures (including wooden altarpieces from the 1400s), offers access to the Palatine Crypt and the dome for panoramic views, and hosts rotating temporary exhibits." - Matthew Kepnes

Visiting Budapest: 3 - 4 Day Suggested Itinerary (Updated 2025)

"Located inside Buda Castle, this art museum (established in 1957) occupies a restored royal residence and showcases works by prominent Hungarian and European artists, a collection of 15th-century medieval altarpieces, access to the underground Habsburg Palatine Crypt, and a climbable dome for panoramic city views; audio guides are available and photography carries an extra fee." - Matthew Kepnes

good art, good views, good special exhibits. give yourself some time to walk around here even if you aren't huge into art. and if you are into art, block out a good couple of hours because this place is large! cool to get a perspective on hungarian artists as well

This was amazing, AMAZING. There were a couple of paintings that made me quite emotional, the picnic in may was very touching in it's purity. I loved the 1st floor's 19th century section, it was wonderful. We spent 4 hours in it. If I lived in Budapest, I'd buy a year pass to make sure I could appreciate all of it. I really recommend it, a wonderful place!

i had an amazing experience in this gallery! The way of presenting the art works was absolutely phenomenal, f.e I loved how they displayed the most eye-catching painting right after the ticketshop. Each of the halls had different vibes as the colors of the walls were variable, while suiting the aesthetics of the art works. It is also nice that there are discounts for Youths (17-25)! The gallery broadens into several floors, so I’d recommend energising before visiting!

A truly beautiful and interesting place: a comprehensive collection of Hungarian art, a huge building, and some truly unique details (like the majestic terracotta-hued natural stone staircase). I was absolutely thrilled! The lady at the information desk was very pleasant and elegant. Thank you so much for this wonderful place to experience the richness of Hungarian art!

The Hungarian National Gallery (Magyar Nemzeti Galéria), located inside Buda Castle, is one of the most important art museums in Hungary, featuring masterpieces from the Middle Ages to modern times but I honestly expected something more. It’s definitely worth going up — there’s a beautiful Belvedere terrace with breathtaking views over the Parliament and the Danube River. A nice combination of art, history, and one of the best panoramas in Budapest.

We did only the permanent exhibit and very much enjoyed it. The spread of art is well done; they have something for everyone. Its not huge, but for $15 USD its very much worth the visit! Many, many steps lead up to the Museum, be prepared. Overall its not designed very well, as many of the hallways dead end into employee only area, but very expected given how old the building is. Dont miss the stairs leading up to the dome as well. The gift shop is very well stocked and decently priced. Free storage lockers for bags and coats. No wait to get in. A+

Really nice museum. I went to multiple art museums in I really liked this one over the others. They had a temporary art nuveau exposition which was the best part. The permanent exposition is very diverse from fine arts, modern and contemporary. Is very big, I would advise dedicating 2-3 hours walking fast. The only con is the cost, around 7000 ft is too much imo.

Lovely art museum and well worth a visit if in Budapest. Missing a star as the wheelchair accessible entrance was round a corner and via an old lift. The gallery also involved constantly going back on yourself rather from room to room.

I visited the Hungarian National Gallery in Buda Castle as part of my university course from the University of Pécs, guided by my professor. Such a beautiful place! There are so many amazing realistic and abstract paintings and sculptures. The view of the city from the top is just stunning, totally worth the visit.
