The Biggest and Best Carnival Celebrations Around the World

"Situated right on the Rhine, this hotel is an ideal location to enjoy the Basel Carnival festivities. It is also considered one of Europe’s finest hotels."

"Since 1681, when it was founded as an “inn for gentlemen,” the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois has welcomed everyone from Napoléon Bonaparte to Ella Fitzgerald. With frescoed walls and views of the Rhine in many of its 101 suites—not to mention the three Michelin–starred Cheval Blanc, the cigar bar, or the new Pedrazzini boat (the only one on the Rhine, handcrafted in Switzerland)—it’s still the most luxurious address in the Old Town."

Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois

"This 1844 grande dame on the banks of the Rhine reopened in 2006 following a 20-month renovation, and again became the most prominent address in town—the place to gossip over espressos on the riverfront terrace, to broker business deals in the firelit bar, to throw lavish dinner parties among the silver rose bowls and candelabras in the formal restaurant, Cheval Blanc. The 101-room hotel isn’t an exact restoration but rather a tribute to the sumptuousness of Belle Epoque grand hotels, with heavy wooden doors that glide shut, chandeliers bigger than most men, and marble columns crowned with gold. Guest rooms are just as nostalgic—especially those in the 1904 Art Deco wing—but still manage a few discreet modern touches (Wi-Fi, heated bathroom floors). The service is flawless, from the tuxedoed waiters to the housekeeping staff, who at turndown leave behind pitchers of water, chocolates, and—surprise!—kiwis. By the way, on weekends, room rates can drop by almost $200."

Hotel Les Trois Rois (Basel, Switzerland) 4 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"There’s history, and then there’s history; there are old hotels, and then there are old hotels. Few, though, are quite as old as Les Trois Rois (or the Drei Könige, if you prefer), which has stood by the banks of the Rhine since the year 1026. The building, happily, isn’t quite that old, dating back only about a century and a half, an opulent palace of a hotel with a prime location on the Blumenrain, Basel’s riverside drive." - Tablet Hotels

Returned here with pleasure. The staff is still charming and professional, rooms with character and elegant, attention to the details still there in this changing world. The breakfast exquisite and chic as well, the terrace and the bar closet to perfect. Watching a place keeping its quality and charm is always great.

Toxic, biased, and completely unprofessional security – avoid this hotel if you care about fairness and safety I had one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a luxury hotel — all because of the incompetent and biased security staff at Hotel Les Trois Rois. During my visit, I witnessed and experienced blatant gender discrimination. A male guest made a completely unverified comment, and without hesitation, security sided with him — no questions asked, no effort to understand the full context, no interest in hearing both sides. They immediately took action against me, simply because I’m a woman. Their behavior was aggressive, condescending, and rooted in outdated attitudes that have no place in any professional setting, let alone a five-star hotel. The way they handled the situation was not just careless — it was dangerous. Their actions sent a clear message: women are not respected here. The security staff do not behave like trained professionals. They act with prejudice, arrogance, and a disturbing lack of accountability. They treated me with suspicion instead of respect, and it was clear they had already made up their minds before speaking a single word to me. This is not just a service failure — it is a serious reflection of a toxic culture that starts with poor hiring, lack of training, and a complete disregard for guest safety, especially for women. If you're expecting world-class service, safety, and fair treatment, stay far away from this hotel. Until the management overhauls its security practices and addresses the bias in its staff, Hotel Les Trois Rois is not a safe place — it’s a risk.

Worst security experience I’ve ever had – disgraceful treatment of women The security team at Hotel Les Trois Rois is not just unprofessional – they are outright disrespectful and biased. I had a deeply unpleasant encounter where a male guest made a false or minor accusation, and without any effort to verify facts or speak to me directly, security immediately acted against me. They treated me, a female visitor and professional, with no respect or courtesy, showing a shocking lack of basic investigative protocol, empathy, or neutrality. Their first and only instinct was to take the man’s word as truth, without question. This wasn’t a misunderstanding – it was a clear pattern of discrimination. The security staff acted with an aggressive, arrogant, and authoritarian attitude that has no place in any hotel, let alone one with five stars and a reputation for luxury. To be blunt: the security staff here behave like they’re guarding a nightclub, not a historic luxury hotel. They’re poorly trained, deeply biased, and damaging the hotel’s reputation. If you are a woman, a solo traveler, or anyone who expects to be treated with fairness and dignity, do not stay here. The security behavior was offensive, outdated, and dangerous. This hotel clearly prioritizes the comfort of men over the safety and dignity of women. I urge management to take serious action, because the current state of their security team is nothing short of shameful.

We loved and admired everything about this hotel. The staff was exemplary, the room lovely, and the food delicious. The destination restaurant in the hotel, the Michelin 3 star Cheval Blanc, is, truly, a destination restaurant…imaginative, creative, delicious, and the service was simply superb. But the hotel’s other restaurant, the Brasserie was also superb …for breakfast as well as dinner…just not quite at the aspirational level of Cheval. Which is as it should be. They are doing different things. The food in the bar is also very good…with as good a BLT as one might want.

There is no more extraordinary grand hotel than this one. The staff is competent, friendly, helpful and exceptionally well trained. There is hardly a wish that cannot be read from your lips in an almost magical way. The rooms are bright, large, very well equipped, clean, almost clinically pure. The housekeeping, concierge, reception, directions assistance and front office manager are a well-coordinated team. A taxi is called for the customer in seconds, the bar is well stocked and the staff are knowledgeable, friendly and always good for a cocktail surprise. The cigar lounge ‘The Council’ was my living room during my stay, with a very good selection of Cuban cigars of the highest quality. The entire hotel is on par with any international museum in terms of its international art collection. The bar cuisine is exquisite and the restaurant is of world-class quality. I felt at home here and look forward to coming back. It's worth travelling the furthest distances for this place!

Fantastic hotel in great location. Epitome of the Swiss hotel. Beautiful views and walking distance to most things. Morning walks along the river are a great way to start the day. The food in the hotel is exceptional. The bar is a great place to meet or unwind at the end of the day.

I visited Hotel Les Trois Rois during Art Basel, expecting high standards of hospitality, safety, and professionalism. Instead, I encountered a deeply misogynistic and discriminatory attitude, particularly from the hotel security staff.||This hotel is shockingly unfriendly towards women. Any man can make even the slightest comment about a woman—guest or visitor—and security will immediately side with the man without investigating or listening to the woman’s side of the story. It was alarming to witness such blind favoritism and bias. This kind of outdated, patriarchal behavior has no place in modern Switzerland, let alone in a hotel that markets itself as "luxury" and "world-class."||The behavior I observed from staff was not just dismissive but completely unprofessional and unacceptable. As a woman, I did not feel safe, welcome, or respected. It felt like stepping into another era—one where a woman’s word meant nothing and male guests held all the power, no matter how inappropriate or unfounded their behavior was.||If you value equality, dignity, and respectful treatment, I urge you to stay elsewhere. Art Basel brings international visitors who expect a cosmopolitan level of service. Les Trois Rois failed spectacularly on that front. This is not just a bad hotel experience—it's a shame for Swiss hospitality as a whole.||Avoid this hotel if you're a woman traveling alone, with friends, or simply someone who believes in fair treatment.

Google
Absolutely outstanding hotel, old-world style fully deserving of its 5 stars. The bar is incredible and the food in the brasserie superb. This is not a slick glass-fronted ultra modern hotel, but a classic old-school style where the staff outnumber the guests ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Yelp
What a fantastic experience this grand hotel was - from check-in to check-out. We were here for a special wedding anniversary and they treated us more like loving family than guests. To say the service was 5-stars would not be giving the whole picture. It was relaxed, charming elegance with many small kindnesses adding up to a very warm happy experience. And the food was other level. We were fortunate to dine at Cheval Blanc and it lived up to its lofty reputation. A definite "wow" experience. But the hotel cuisine at lunch and even breakfast was also top-level. There are windows into the kitchen in the hotel and you can watch the chefs (including renowned chef Knofl) hard at work performing their craft. All of this does not come inexpensively. This is a 5-star hotel and Cheval Blanc is a 3 star Michelin restaurant. So you will have to spend some money for the experience. But there are many expensive experiences that do not live up to expectations. This one does and, in fact, exceeds them. Note: this hotel is part of the Amex Grand Hotels program which provides a room upgrade if available and a 100 Swiss franc spending credit in the hotel.

Yelp
Once you've enjoyed everything that Basel has to offer, come back and stay here. Above world-class service and accommodations begin when you're greeted at the front door and conclude when you're wished bon voyage when parting. Such kind and attentive service in a hotel that dates back to the thirteenth century. Beyond the subtle yet glorious finishes and furnishings of the hotel, look out your window and see the beauty of the Rhine at your feet with its charming boats and bathers. What a great stay!

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful historic hotel with amazing views of the Rhine river since it's right next to it. Location: Centrally located in Basel and walking distance to the historic area as well as other areas. You're about 2 blocks from Marketplatz and near so many restaurants and yummy Swiss chocolate stores. The hotel has done a great job at keeping the historic design and feel of the building while still providing modern day amenities. Your key is an old style key with a large tassel that you can't lose (you give it to the Concierge whenever you leave so you don't have to lug it around). Staff: I love the staff. They are all extremely nice and helpful. They greet you as you walk by and help you with pretty much whatever questions you may have. They all are able to speak and understand English too. Upon checkin, you're given a fresh rose for your room (which has a small vase already filled with water for it). And upon checkout you usually get a homemade jam from them (it's delicious). Rooms: The rooms are very cute. As previously mentioned, they're all decorated in this historic look. The beds are comfortable and the AC works well when it's warm/hot out. They provide an umbrella in your closet in case it's rainy season. I really don't have any complaints. Breakfast: The breakfast buffet has a good selection. They have a variety of fruits, juices, yogurt, breads, charcuterie meats, and pastries. In addition, they have a small menu for you to order eggs, waffles, or pancakes. I always love staying here.

Yelp
This is the finest hotel I have ever had the pleasure of staying there. First of all this hotel is first class entirely. I had a beautiful room with a view of the Rhine River. I highly recommend staying here and also having their breakfast buffet added. I was so impressed with everything including the B&O tv which is the best television made in the world. The bed was very comfortable also.

Yelp
Great atmosphere in a glorious location. One of my favourite cigar rooms in the city, providing you breath taking views from the Rhein river. Albeit expensive, we are often serviced by a great staff, alway willing to help. Dinner at the bar counter is a monthly tradition with friends from work and each visit is a memorable experience. I would not rate it 5-stars due to price x benefit for what you get for the actual food (the food menu at the bar, this is not related to the Le Cheval Blanc restaurant). Sometimes is just not at par with what you would expect from a such high-standard hotel.

Yelp
First, wow... just wow. In order to do this review any justice, I need to separate it by stay and of course by food. Food: We ate at two of the restaurants during our stay. The first was the Brasserie. This is their average restaurant, or the one you go to for breakfast or lunch. We did breakfast as we paid for that to be included in advance. Remember there is a currency exchange, so that was the most sensible. Now back to the food. The breakfast was exquisite. I am a coffee drinker, and as many know they coffee is richer overseas. I started almost every morning with a coffee and espresso. The breakfast was both order off a menu and buffet. Fresh meats, breads, cheese, yogurt, fruit, eggs, champagne, you name it, you could have it. Every breakfast we say overlooking the Rhine River. It could not have been more stunning. Oh wait, we didn't get to the dinner yet. Les Trois Rois also has one of the top 100 restaurants in the world. We really didn't know what we were getting into, as we went here our first night and were told a table freed up. Dinner was to start promptly at 7 PM. When we arrived in this intimate room, only lit by candlelight, we were astonished. It was only a ten top and the dinner was only for those 10 tables. It was a coursed meal that spanned 7 courses, but the reality was we got about 14 courses. Their wine list was out of this world, as well. We settled on a Pinot that was 150 Swiss francs. Honestly, it sounded the best and was out of this world. We could have gone with a 8,000 Swiss France bottle, but I think we picked a good choice! The food was out of this world. Made to perfection. Honestly, I have NEVER had food this well made and amazing. Every bite was tantalizing and melted in your mouth. The staff was amazing. They would let you get up without helping you. To be clear, this was a very expensive restaurant. There are no cheap chooses. The meal was 235 per person, plus wine and anything else extra you get. We left at about 750 for our bill (thankful I got miles for it ;) ). Room: The room was like out of a fairy tale. My 4 year old son FaceTimed me and called the hotel and the room Titanic. The history oozed out everywhere. The woodwork, grand stair case, and intricate details done to maintain this hundreds of year old building were amazing. The hotel had an amazing cigar room and wine cellar where you could purchase rare wines. The room itself was large, even by American standards. Equipped with a stocked mini fridge, snacks, flowers, fresh fruit. The service was amazing for the room, as well. The doors unlock via a modern, not so modern, key which is quite heavy. During the day the concierge will hold onto it for you. The bathrooms were marble with bidet toilets and a deep tub/shower combo. Once again extremely large. There were two large windows that could open to the city below, which was nice because it was about 50 and the fresh air was crisp. It was approximately 600 a night to stay here, but you are staying in a five star rated hotel. We will be staying here again in April and I cannot wait!

Yelp
We stayed at the Grand Hotel a few years back, when it was known as the Hotel Drei Konige. I typically dont put much thought into hotels for business travel other than proximity to the "event" or "office" but this trip provided a bit more flexibility in our choice, so we went all in. Definitely a splurge, but the corporate dime was pretty large back then. When I reflect on that trip the image that stands out is the commanding view our room had of the Rhine, and the overall quality our stay offered us. The accommodations were exceptional, even down to the Hermes brand toiletries (like the aftershave, which I saved and still use to this day) Our room was a Junior suite, the bathroom had a chandelier...probably a bit over the top, but it looked good doing it. It overlooked the Rhine with a small balcony and had a nice view of the Greifengasse. The proximity of the hotel to old town was very nice and there are many great restaurants close by.

Yelp
This is an amazingly posh hotel. The people and service are quite nice for a European hotel. The rooms are anywhere from jr suites to larger suites on the Rhein river. It's elegant and classy! The buffet breakfast is quite good as well. Location on the river and by the tram stops makes getting to wherever you need to go easy.

Melanie S.

Yelp
Comfortable, pretty, outstanding location. The bar overlooks the Rhine and has a terrific drink menu. Breakfast bar was exquisite with endless choices. The room was big by European standards with a tv, well appointed bathroom and a very professional staff.

Robert H.

Yelp
Beautiful really old hotel. Amenities are top of the line. Service perfect. About $600.00 per night, for that price you would think that the breakfast buffet would be included, you would be wrong. After a small breakfast the 2 of us were presented with a 90CHF bill that even asked for a tip for us serving ourselves. That turned out to be a $100 breakfast. No one had mentioned or posted that the breakfast was an extra charge. Also no one mentioned to us that their top restaurant Chavel Blanc was closed for the entire time of our visit. In our room a note said, please join us for afternoon tea, but did not mention that tea was another extra charge. We had lunch at their Brasserie, Tuesday, August 8. I ordered veal with Rosti, the veal was tender and tasty but the Rosti potatoes were raw/uncooked and oily in the middle and burned black on the outside. Very sad. The minibar was mentioned several times in their literature, but it had no alcohol. Their person to person service was exquisite, but several items need attention. A real shame that they cannot even prepare Rosti properly.

Yelp
The best dining room in Basel! The Brasserie restaurant is outstanding, with an unforgettable view of the Rhine. They have a good selection of daily specials, an impressive range of meat and fish dishes, and know their way around a beef tartare. A great array of desserts to round out the meal. The wine list is impressive, and the service is attentive. You will dine like a king - It's pricey, but it comes with the royal treatment! They also have a fantastic bar, so plan on having a drink there before or after dinner. If you are craving a cigar, head downstairs, pick out your favorite Cuban and a glass of scotch, and discuss where you will launch your next company or where you are going to vacation next summer!

Suzy J.

Yelp
Hotel staff was exceptional, the breakfast and lounge spectacular. The rooms could use an update.

Yelp
Great place to sit outside on the terrace, relax. look on the Rhein and zip on a drink or coffee.

Yelp
Very expensive, but great place to chill and enjoy a drink beside an open fire, or even to try afternoon tea whilst listening to the resident pionist.

Yelp
Outstanding boutique hotel downtown Basle. The quality is at its highest, the location amazing, the prices stellar.

Lisa W.

Yelp
Hard to go wrong with a place that offers you a red rose upon check-in and a jar of homemade jam upon check-out. The heated black marble floors in the bathrooms, the luscious fixtures and decor, the impeccable service, the menu of pillow options, and the often quite reasonable rates (relatively speaking) help, too. Really grateful to have stayed here over the past several years. I guess the only gripe is that the TV is a bit hard to finagle. It takes a while to figure out how to turn it on and it takes even longer to figure out how to turn it off. But that's a small price to pay for all the aforementioned items. Life is good here. Oh! And the bar makes a good Manhattan.
google avatar

Yelp
What does $550/night buy? A small room on the side of the hotel facing a busy street. We tried to upgrade, but they wanted MORE money. Really? The price here does not match the quality. I would look elsewhere.

Eladio R.

Yelp
The Brasserie has a great menu, food is really good and the service is very good, a bit pricey though
