"Hotel Goldener Hirsch is set in the Old Town and is known for its iconic location with a five-star atmosphere. The 70-room hotel blends its 600-year-old hunting lodge heritage with modern-day conveniences, featuring spacious rooms and suites with antique furnishings, traditional rugs, roomy marble tubs, and soundproof windows." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a freelance writer with over eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. "All things cozy and Austrian meet in this legendary inn, which first welcomed guests in the 15th-century and now lists Prince Charles among its loyal fans. The hotel is in the heart of the medieval old town, surrounded by shops displaying wrought iron guild signs. You can walk to pretty much anything, including Mozart’s birthplace, just down the street. Because driving can be a hassle—pedestrian-only areas, inscrutable road signs—you’re better off taking the train from Vienna or Munich. If it wasn’t so authentic, you’d swear a set designer had orchestrated the vaulted ceilings, antique farmers’ furniture, deer and stag heads, and staff in lederhosen and dirndls."

"Nestled among the boutiques and restaurants that linethe city’s main shopping street, the historic Hotel Goldener Hirsch has all the hallmarks of a Tyrolean hunting lodge right in the heart of medieval Old Town, from vaulted ceilings and mounted antlers to staff dressed in lederhosen and dirndls. Vintage guest-room keys are embellished with stag silhouettes, and even the tableware and linens in the two restaurants (one a former blacksmith, the other a goldsmith) feature the signature leaping-deer motif. Both serve hearty local fare—stop in for schnitzels, beef goulash, and bratwurst with sauerkraut, then call it a night in one of 70 cozy guest rooms, which balance cheerful country textiles and antique furnishings with modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi."

We spent one night at this well-located and charming hotel as a family and can highly recommend it. The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. Having arrived in Salzburg early in the morning on the night train, we greatly appreciated the complimentary early check-in at 9 a.m. for both rooms, along with an upgrade to a junior suite. The rooms were spacious, cozy, and well-appointed, featuring thoughtful amenities, including a large TV screen. Breakfast was excellent, offering a wide variety of delicious options. Overall, a pleasant stay with great service in a prime location.

Google
Impeccable service, property, and location. This was an absolutely wonderful experience and our room was so cozy and clean. The bar was exceptional and the restaurant was pretty good. Lovely, thoughtful turn down service. We stayed with FHR and everything about the stay was five stars. The location could not be better and the historic property is magical. The only downfall to our stay was breakfast - it left a lot to be desired. There was no host, not many options, and they stopped making breakfast/refilling food stations about 2 hours before breakfast ended.

Great location in old town. Excellent service. Good breakfast buffet. All the staff have been very friendly and helpful. Comfy bed. Lovely bathroom with heated floor (in our suite). It’s a little funky to get around, but it is a 600 year old building.

Salzburg is one of our favorite places to visit in Europe and each time we return we feel at home. This was our first stay at the Goldener Hirsch, but it will not be our last! Beautifully located in the heart of the old town the boutique hotel skillfully blend traditional Austrian charm with modern conveniences. We stayed in a junior suite which was beautifully decorated, spacious and comfortable. We loved the delicious breakfast and initmate bar. The staff provide warm and personalized service as though you were a guest in their home! Our only regret was we didn't plan a longer stay.

We loved our stay at the Goldener Hirsch. From the check in to the bellman, and restaurant staff, everyone was so kind and helpful. Patrick in the bar area was excellent making drinks and helping with restaurant reservations. We would definitely stay here again. Perfect location, great breakfast, comfortable and clean.

This hotel epitomizes understated elegance. It’s beautifully simple, with an unbeatable location right in the heart of the charming downtown area. The rooms are tastefully furnished, and the textiles are warm and inviting. While the hotel doesn’t have a large lobby and can be challenging to navigate for those with limited mobility, it’s exquisitely designed and offers exceptional service. The fresh flowers in the room were a thoughtful touch to celebrate our wedding aniversary.

Google
Top 5 greatest hotel stays ever. Im pretty hard to impress but this place impressed the heck out of me. This place is better than the photos on the website. When does that happen??!! The photos, which look a little hansel-and-gretyl ish, dont do justice to the in-person experience. Its all very understated gemutlichkeit and nothing opulent about the common areas. You might imagine yourself in a bavarian hunting lodge. I had a sinking feeling when they led us to our room across the street in an annex. In my experience that is usually not a good sign but our room was nothing short of fantastic. It might have been a suite, Im not sure. It had a seating area and one of the nicest bathrooms ever with good towels. The bed was the most comfortable ever of our 3 week trip with top quality bed linens - although an American will never understand the "duvet thing" in Germany and Austria (if you know, you know). Im sure this has to be the BEST location in all of Salzburg right at the very end of Getreidegasse.||Unfortunately, we only stayed one night and it happened to be during a once-in-a-lifetime flooding in central europe. The next morning we were to find out that the trains were not operating due to damage to the tracks and we had no way to get to Vienna. The hotel helped us arrange a private driver which resulted in a HUGE unexpected cost, but thanks to the hotel, they saved the day.||We travel often to Italy and Austria is a little out of the way for us but we loved this hotel and Salzburg so much we are going again in April after Italy and wouldnt even consider another hotel.

The hotel is a classic. It is located close to everything one would want to experience in Salzburg. The rooms are exquisite. Yet it is the associates, including the concierge Frau Stauffer, who make one's stay so memorable. Breakfast, under the guidance of Herr Wrobel, was delicious.

Yelp
Let me just say this has to be the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in. There's not a thing about this hotel I'd change except maybe lower the price. You get what you pay for, tho. To start off, everyone I encountered while here was absolutely amazing and there to make your stay as perfect as possible. The staff 100% makes the stay worth it. If you go, see Patrick at the bar, and he will take care of you. Second, the room was huge, and there was plenty of room for the four of us. We were greeted with fresh fruit and bottled water, which was a blessing after being on the train to get there. Also, the breakfast in the morning was delicious. Treat yourself, and go get the Eggs Benedict! Finally, my girlfriend got strep throat during our stay. The hotel got a doctor to make a room visit and got her medication on a Sunday when everything was closed. Thank you, Goldener Hirsch! I see why her family has been staying with you for years!

Yelp
Perfect place if you want to explore the Christmas market. Just a 5 minute walk in old town Salzburg. Check out the side alleyways for more unique shops. Not cheap but worth it.

Yelp
Stayed here for a brief two days on my short visit to Salzburg and thought the accommodations were very nice! The hotel has the traditional Austrian feel, the cleaning personal wearing Dirndl's and a lot of wood and old Austrian decor around the premises. Very charming and welcoming. The staff were all incredibly professional and extremely nice. The location was top notch right on the main shopping street. One thing to be aware is that taxis and Uber's cannot drive on the street so they can drop you off within a few yards of the entrance. Not a terribly big deal but make sure to plan ahead for that. They bring you the most delicious chocolates ever at turndown service. They are seriously so good. They also have a nice bathtub which was relaxing and enjoyable. 10/10 I would stay here again.

Yelp
Always a pleasure to stay at this very personal hotel. Everyone here goes out of their way to accommodate guests and make them feel at home. Especially their breakfast manager, Mr. Franz, is amazing. Rooms are very nicely designed and updated to be luxurious yet local, the only thing to think about (since this is a Marriott hotel) is to get to an international standard on bedding - the "Austrian style" individual mattresses and blankets and overly thick blankets are one of the reasons I usually avoid an Austrian hotel and go for something more international. It would increase sleep quality tremendously.

Erin B.

Yelp
I absolutely loved my stay here! Perfect location that's walking distance to everything.. The staff is exceptional and so welcoming! I loved my room.. the decor is so charming and. the breakfast is incredible. You should book your stay here - you will not regret it.

Yelp
can I give six stars??? this was one of the nicest hotel experiences I've ever had and I've been traveling around the world, for business and pleasure, for many years. it's a 600 year old building, beautifully maintained. our room was so cute, with beautiful restored furniture with elegant hardware, comfy beds and linens, updated and huge toilet/bath with separate tub and shower, double sinks, overloaded with towels. service was amazing. the front desk people were all so friendly and helpful, remember our names as we passed through even though we only stayed two nights location is perfect. right in the middle of Salzburg Altstadt, steps from the Mozart square and on the main shopping street my only regret is not having the time to try the restaurant or bar I seriously would consider coming back to Salzburg just to stay in this hotel again

Yelp
Not gonna lie....was a little thrown back by the decor and smell of this place. lol! But hey, what I quickly realized was that, this place was an authentic and historic old Salzburg hotel. From the carpet, to the decor, to the uniforms the service people wear. Which actually, was much appreciated being this my first time in Salzburg. Really came to appreciate traditions here in Salzburg Austria. The service from when we first arrived was quite personable and friendly. They really made us feel at home. They can detect Americans before we open our mouths. Lol. But what I also noticed here at this hotel and in Salzburg...a lot more English is spoken here. We just came from visiting Munich where not so much English is spoken. Our rooms are cute and decorated in old Austrian decor. But very clean and neat. The service was on point to anything we needed. They even have turn down service which was not. A complimentary mini bar and these delicious chocolates at turn down. Yum! Wow! So good! We came when it was raining...they gave us umbrellas. Which was also nice. We had food in there bar area and for a sandwich...lol. Wow. Pretty damn good. Wish we had tried the restaurant for dinner. I'm sure that's good too. Not much more else to say. Good service, clean rooms, clean hotel, pretty good food and drinks...and also not to forget, this hotel is located in the heart of the old town district where all the shopping and restaurants are. All walking distance. Very convenient. Can't think of anywhere else I would want to stay the next time I'm in Salzburg. :)

Yelp
What would it be like to sleep in a place that's history began in 1407?! A place that literally makes you want the walls to talk to tell it's story ! That's the Hotel Goldener Hirsch. Being a part of Starwood's Luxury Collection is what prompted me to book this hotel in the old city of Salzburg for our recent European trip that included Salzburg; but as I investigated it prior to arrival, I was amazed by its rich history. I LOVE places with history such as this. Hotel Goldener Hirsch is anything but average. It's a 5 star property , yes .. but , it's also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Altstadt Salzburg. The home has been a silversmiths home ; a blacksmiths home; a tavern , partly how it's name is of now, as the tavern , in 1671, was called , 'Wirtshaus zum Goldener Hirschen' or Tavern of the Golden Deer. That deer still embellishes almost everything at Hotel Goldener Hirsch from the door knobs to staffs clothing to the towels to the dishes. The hotel is not 'modern' by standards of a business hotel, so don't check in looking for that business center. There are 70 rooms here . The style is very 15th century and many of the furnishings date back to that time. THE ONE issue we had : credit card upon check in. We got the BIG N O aka decline; or so they said. TRUST me NO one wants that feeling EVER, but it causes even more stress when abroad. It's apparently a European thing .. they want a pin number for major credit cards. Neither my husband's or mine has that; at least that we are aware of! We didn't have this issue at the Ritz Carlton in Vienna though because they manually typed the cc numbers in. Here they didn't seem to understand that idea... or want to ; my stress got the better of me and I pulled out a debit card , which as anyone knows , yanks a ton of money out immediately. BUT, it had that pin they were looking for! Jeez. Ridiculous! On to the room. We were upgraded due to my husband's status with Starwood. Given a large golden key , the sweet Austrian boy with impeccable English took our bags and we all squeezed tightly into the very old lift. This is a modern addition, as there are tons of stairs here leading here and there. So cool!! Our room was set over the old street down below of Old Salzburg; so incredibly charming! The french windows open and it was fun to hear music from below .. like an accordion on the cobblestone street below one night! We had a sitting area and a king bed ; a separate bath & water closet. To European standards , this was a large room. There are two awesome restaurants on sight and a great little bar with a great bartender AND there is food there too. I recommend ALL of THEM! Restaurant Goldener Hirsch was one of the best meals we had on our Austria / Germany trip and best service too.. TRUST me: visit either country for a few days and you may not think of France or Italy as being the 'rude' ones ( that's cliche anyway!) The Restaurant GH is also a 4star restaurant serving top notch Austrian specialties and it will cost you .. but it's worth every penny.. ummm , euro! Save room for the amazing Salzburger Nockerl! It's made for two and is privy to Salzburg, but this is the place to indulge. The other restaurant, Restaurant s'Herzl, is a bit more casual , yet still authentic Austrian fare.. and has very good offerings. I would recommend a reservation at both. The bar was awesome for a pre dinner aperitif .. when in Rome .. I mean, Austria! Little nibbles of nuts and a nice drink like the house , 'Susanne' that tells a story of a young girl and her first drink.. make it perfect to tie you over for a later dinner , as they also do in Europe. The hotel does not have a concierge per-se and that was an issue a couple of times: misinformation regarding ski slopes being open and sending us to a local restaurant without telling us the place accepted NO credit card! Yeah that wa a bit of a gut wrenching moment. They also don't leave extra water ( even when the ones from the am service are empty) at turndown service or tidy up. They do leave amazing chocolates on the bed though! These are differences we have seen between Starwood and Marriott, as a whole all over the world though .. it all comes down to Marriott having a better customer service product. Nonetheless, this hotel is in a fabulous location .. with markets , restaurants and shops all around! Mozart's Residence is right across the way ! It also has so much character and elegance to it. I highly recommend.. just know your credit cards pin.. You Americans !

Yelp
Had a great stay at the hotel during the recent Christmas season. The location is very centrally located and is within walking distance to al the major sights. The breakfast every morning is incredible. The bar tender was friendly and made some great recommendations. Can't wait to go back one day!

dorothy b.

Yelp
This historic hotel is a pure delight. We stayed for a couple nights while we were in Salzburg for the Christmas Markets. The staff was really friendly and helpful. As other reviewers have noted, the interior is quite rustic - with antique furniture and materials that would be quite at home at your grandmother's house. In this setting, we found it charming. (See photo of the pink bedroom!) You cannot beat the location of this hotel. As soon as you walk out of the hotel you are on the main shopping street which is entirely closed off to traffic. TIP: If you have Starwood points, you may be able to exchange some for a discounted rate or even a free stay here.

Jonah K.

Yelp
Came here for 1 night and really enjoyed the city and the locals. Got upgraded to a large suite. The service was impeccable and extremely friendly. The hotel is very cool and perfectly located. Would stay here again 5 stars!

Hilary G.

Yelp
This may be the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at. I got a good deal booking through Starwood and we received a free upgade to a suite upon arrival. The concierge is truly first class and will help you book tours and they even helped us get a refund from an extremely bad tour that we ended up abandoning (long story). The suite rooms are huge and have a separate sitting area from the bedroom. The bathroom is probably a third of the size of the room which is always appreciated. I loved the color of the tiles and the towels with the Goldener Hirsch stag. Classy place to stay and I can't imagine staying anywhere else. You are located on THE street to be on in Salzburg! Make sure you visit one of the oldest restaurants in Europe, the St. Peter's Stiftskeller.

iPunchfish -.

Yelp
This enchanting hotel is located in Old Town and helps to preserve the overall feeling the town conveys. The hotel is a historic hunting lodge with both touches of the old and new. The interior is very much rustic hunting lodge with Hirsch styling. You will find deer and stag heads all through the hotel. The hotel has two hotels associated with it: the Goldener Hirsch and Restaurant Herzl. I highly recommend Herzl over the Goldener. The atmosphere is better, smoking is not allowed, and there are better choices for food (which is shared between both restaurants). If it is your first time; get the Mixed Grill. It is brilliant!! The rooms are incredible. Our view outside the window was looking out into the street of Old Town and the local Castle. The overall experience was phenomenal.

Matthew D.

Yelp
Quiet, comfortable, and as luxurious as I remembered after a several year gap between visits. The staff are beyond friendly, the bar service always excellent (and well-stocked). I believe the barman stayed a few hours just for our group one evening after dinner out. The location is hard to beat--walking distance from anywhere you want to go in old Salzburg, really--right on a narrow cobblestone street. Some of the better boutiques in town are coincidentally within a one or two block radius of the hotel, actually. The decor is traditional southern germanic, and it feels like the hotel hasn't changed in 200 years, but it definitely does *not* feel dated. They have mostly kept up with the times while retaining their authentic charm. I'll be staying here for sure any time I come to Salzburg.

John P.

Yelp
This is a great hotel. I could not give it 4 stars because of the reason I mention in This review. The hotel is beautiful and historic. The service is five stars. The food at the restaurant's top notch. Our room however, was much to be desired and was not worth the rate charged. Our room overlook the main shopping street which was very noisy and had disturbed us during the evening. I could have lived with the noise but we found the room temperature to be Streamley uncomfortable. I complained about the room temperature however, it was not remedied. If the room temperature was not an issue, I would have given this hotel a five-star review. What is a hotel without the rooms? Please note everything else about this hotel was superb. I don't think I would book at this hotel again. Walking around the town, we noticed several other hotels of interest.

Mike G.

Yelp
a small, rustic hotel in the center of Mozart city. the circa 1500s hunting lodge on the pedestrian Gedreidegassen is within minutes of historic attractions i.e. Salzburger Dom, Altermarkt, Residenzplatz and festival venues. at check-in we were upgraded to a roomy attic-suite with a stunning view of the medieval Hohensalzburg Castle. the extraordinary staff were so hospitable and the sumptuous breakfast a bright spot each morning. highly recommend.

Neda S.

Yelp
I don't know where to start as there is so much I LOVED about this hotel. It is so charming and has so much character. The hotel feels like you've stepped into medieval times. The building was actually built in year 1407 and still has its original structure. There is also so much history to this hotel and famous people that have stayed here. - The rooms are very nice and clean. The bed was super comfortable with great bedding, unlike most hotels in Europe. - Bathroom and shower are completely updated and very nice. - Hotel service is outstanding. They will go out of their way to help you with all requests. - Breakfast was also so good. I loved everything about it including the china they serve the food in. - Location couldn't be better. It's right in the heart of Salzburg. You won't need a car or transportation to get around. You can walk everywhere. It's also near the best shopping and cafes. Overall, one of my favorites in Europe. I seriously can't wait to go back to this hotel when I visit Salzburg next. Spend the extra money and you won't regret the experience.

Andrew B.

Yelp
This hotel is all about location as it sits right on the Getreidegasse, which is the famous shopping lane of this "Milan of the alps." The style is that of a hunting lodge and rooms are quite large and rustic in style. Ours had a long entry hallway with coat closets leading to the room itself which overlooked the Getreidegasse. I would warn anyone with smoke allergies about booking here, although they have smoke free rooms (and they are truly smoke free), the 2nd floor hallway between them is open to the bar below and the smoke can be overwhelming when going to and from your room. Also, leave your key at the front desk when you go out and about, as it's large enough to make a nice belt buckle!

Julie M.

Yelp
Location is outstanding and service is great. It was a hot weekend and the AC worked well. Free internet with good connectivity. Rating reflects our room (#82 - 4th/top floor of second building) which was much smaller than what is pictured on the website with only one window in each of the room and bathroom that was half-sized (starts at the floor and only goes up a little ways). They did not change out lotion/condition/bath gel daily and the outlet in bathroom did not work so I had to blow dry my hair in bedroom. Breakfast buffet was outstanding but very expensive (33 Euros each). Not advertised but they will make eggs made-to-order if you ask. While we were checking in, someone else came after us and was given a room upgrade with free breakfast after we were told there were no more suites/upgrades available by the guy who was checking us in. This was likely because we booked through a service (bookings.com) instead of SPG.com, but it was a little disappointing.

Barbara D.

Yelp
Amazing and quaint hotel. The decor is amazing and the rooms are super cozy. Every detail is just amazing and the hotel really goes above and beyond. You can see the reason why it's a Starwood Luxury Property. It's the perfect location in the Old City right down the street from Mozart's birthplace. Hotel's interior is like a storybook and the bar area and restaurant are equally as lovely and charming. Service is lovely and helpful. They go above and beyond to ensure that you have all your tours and restaurant plans fully confirmed. Met some lovely people here and would certainly recommend it to anyone traveling to this region, as I felt very safe walking around the area and very welcome in the establishment. Top Notch and worth the $$$.

Alison M.

Yelp
A beautiful and charming hotel with perfect service and an amazing restaurant. The location was perfect for us as it's right by the shopping and in the old part of town, which we preferred. It's walkable to all of the locations that would interest a tourist. Parts of it seem a bit outdated to me, but it is part of the Austrian charm I guess. Only 4 stars instead of 5 because there is no fitness center or business center... But when I'm on vacation, I can manage without those two things. I would absolutely stay here again.
