"B-52 bomber It took ages to find the (much acclaimed at AFAR) sunken B-52 bomber in Ha Noi. The twisted pile of metal hardly resembles a plane anymore, but it was interesting nonetheless. Even more fascinating to me was the 'lake' it had fallen into. This emerald green pool was literally bubbling from some mysterious living sludge... I half expected the three-eyed fish from the Simpsons to crawl out! It was awesome."

A place where you can feel the atrocities committed by the United States during the Vietnam War and the indomitable spirit of resistance of the Vietnamese people.

B-52 Lake, also known as Huu Tiep Lake, is a small lake in Hanoi, Vietnam, where the wreckage of a B-52 bomber that was shot down during the Vietnam War still remains submerged. The lake is a poignant reminder of the fierce air raids of 1972, particularly Operation Linebacker II. The lake and its wreckage have become a symbol of Vietnamese resilience and a testament to the country's successful defense against the American bombing campaign. When my friends and I visited this B-52 Lake on a good weather, it looked absolutely majestic and magical (see my attached photos). Recommended to visit if you're in Hanoi!

A worthy quick visit. It puts the war into perspective and is a good reminder of what happened.

“Lake holding the remains of an American B-52 Stratofortress bomber, which was shot down during the massive Linebacker II operation in December 1972. The aircraft crashed directly into the small lake, right between residential houses, and its wreckage has become a symbol of the city’s resilience during the most intense air raids of the entire war. The wreckage was intentionally left in place. It isn’t in a museum, and it hasn’t been restored. And perhaps that’s exactly why it feels more powerful than most memorials. It’s a raw artifact, left precisely where it ended its journey. People in Hanoi pass by it every day, reminded that history doesn’t live only in school textbooks — but also in their own streets.”

Cool historical spot. I enjoyed talking with the local youth fishing in the lake, watched them catch a few fish, some kept for food, some released. Actually goldfish and koi caught were released.

A very unique and special relic to witness. Quite mesmerising how it is simply left how it lay when shot down in the 1970s. Worth reading up, little information once there. Type in “ho b52” into Google Maps to find it and walk through the backstreets to find a secluded area.
