Tacos, burritos, and other Yucatán-inspired Mexican dishes are available at this easygoing vegan restaurant.
"Hidden in that two-story strip mall on the corner of Westwood and Olympic that hasn’t changed its decor since 1987, Hijo De Su Madre is a counter-service vegan spot serving Yucatecan-style dishes, like spicy “loganiza and egg” tacos and mushroom pibil tortas with mustard and pickled habanero onions. Our only issue is that the plant-based meats in the tacos here are so juicy that the soft corn tortillas end up clinging to life by the time you finish. Still, we’d send anyone here for a satisfying and affordable meatless lunch in West LA." - sylvio martins, garrett snyder
"Hijo De Su Madre is a casual, counter-service vegan Mexican spot that injects a strong dose of creative flair into its menu. There's a seared tofu “banh mi-style” taco, a “bratwurst” LA street dog-style taco, and one called the “Phat Ass” with deep-fried avocado. The plant-based Yucatan-style dishes are our favorites though, including the spicy-sour jackfruit cochinita pibil topped with black bean and corn salsa. The faux meat is so juicy that your corn tortilla will probably disintegrate before you take a second bite, but that doesn’t detract from its deliciousness. " - sylvio martins, jess basser sanders, brant cox, arden shore

They’ve got a banh mi-style taco with seared tofu, a bratwurst taco inspired by LA street dogs, and a deep-fried avocado taco called the “Phat Hass.” The best things here come from the Yucatan-inspired side of the menu, including a fantastic spicy-sour jackfruit cochinita pibil topped with black bean and corn salsa. Our only issue is that the plant-based meats here are so juicy, the soft corn tortillas end up clinging to life by the time you finish. Still, we’d send anyone here for a satisfying and affordable lunch in West LA—vegan or otherwise." - sylvio martins, garrett snyder, nikko duren
