"Stop for Drop at an Old-Fashioned Shop It was the fifth of seven food stops on our Jordaan Food Tour (http://www.eatingamsterdamtours.com/jordaan-food-tour/), a four-hour gastronomic adventure through one of Amsterdam 's most scenic and historic neighborhoods. We'd already devoured apple pie, Indonesian sandwiches, ossenworst, raw herring and lightly fried kibbeling. But could we find room for something sweet? Enter Mariska Schaefer, owner of Het Oud-Hollandsch Snoepwinkeltje, an old-fashioned candy boutique that harks back to a simpler time, when kids saved pennies for a trip to the local candy store. As we might have expected, a child about ten was using his birthday money to buy a bag filled with his favorite sweets on the day we visited. “No pictures of children,” ordered Mariska, then turned her attention to the kid's selections. “I opened the candy shop because I really like Dutch old-fashioned shops; they have so much more atmosphere than the big chain stores,” she reflects. Inspired by her grandmother, she stocks drop, the national sweet, in dozens of flavors in her small shop—some sweet, others salty, still others downright inedible for some."

Best place for liquorice lovers! The owner expertly assisted and made the experience very pleasant. I got a pick and mix bag, and a small gift mix. I'll try to come back for sure 🖤 *cash only

Maliska is truly the expert in Dutch candy and licorice after 21 years running her shop. Appreciate the generosity of her time and experience with us tourists. She was very helpful in guiding us through what to get, according to our preferences. In the end, we bought a prepackaged licorice "favorites" to bring back home, as well as 50g of light salt and 50g of regular dutch licorice. Would recommend stopping by to anyone residing in or visiting central Amsterdam.

Google
Very helpful to point us to two types that we loved! One sweet, one lightly salty. Cute little shop!

I absolutely love Dutch licorice. Today is my last day in Amsterdam and I went to this shop and asked the clerk to provide me with a good selection and variety of licorice to take back to Canada. She did not disappoint and picked out the most amazing types; some sweet, some salty, all very delicious (I sampled a few before packing my suitcase). Thank you for all your suggestions and help choosing the perfect treats.

Google
EXCELLENT licorice but owner was the quintessential crabby candy lady. How is it that you sell something sweet that brings joy, yet you are jaded. It was a Willy Wonka-ian experience. Going in, we had a very good working knowledge of different types of licorice (salmiak, sweet-to-salty, soft, ammonia essence, caramel texture, etc) so we tried to communicate what we liked, but she didn't want to listen. Instead, she felt the need to judge our kid for being on her phone. How about grasping that without a phone kids would be climbing the walls, grabbing at candy, whining, but that would have been a complaint too! So, on either side of this "argument" she would've found fault. How about just sell candy with a smile or sell your biz to someone who is passionate about licorice & retail. And in a media focused world (& good for promotion), grinchGirl won't let you take pics in the store and accused our kid of taking a photo, all that was really happening was she was watching something on her phone. Ugh😖

I’m not sure this shop is for everyone bc the owner can be a bit rough around the edges and is not catering to “photos for the gram” and influencers. However, I found her fun and we had a lovely chat about different licorice and some other local traditional candies. So if you are actually looking for a good candy shop and not for social media posts, this is a nice spot.

Saw this lovely little shop on nigellas Christmas show. So when I went to Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago I made a point of going there to get some various liquorice for my partner. Mariska who owns the shop is lovely and her knowledge of liquorice is the best. She helped me pick out some nice liquorice and when I told her I wasn't a fan she gave me a piece of blueberry liquorice. It was so tasty I bought some for myself too. Can't wait to visit again when I go back. Couldn't wait till I went back so I ordered some from her website 😁😁

Stopped by this cute little store on the way back to the hotel. The store lady gave us a sample of the Dutch candy. Kids would love this store for sure.

Yelp
I really like the salt licorice we bought but the owner was very rude... We've never tried salted licorice and I wanted a little help deciding (just like this is the most popular this is the most salty) nothing. No assistence. I even told her that she could pick a variety for us and she said no we have to choose. She also snapped at me when she was naming all the choices of flavors like maybe 10 or so and I said "oh I'll take Caramel" she said "let me finish now I have to start again"! I don't think She likes Americans. She was nicer to the Dutch couple after us. It's a shame because I want to go back but she was mean. *also I saw her store on Andrew Zimmerman so I thought it would be a good place for tourist.

Yelp
it is at least ok. the clerk (owner?) is somewhat snotty. particularly to Americans. But, not so snotty you cannot get drop. she likes Dutch children and can be kind, Ive seen it with my own eyes. The people passing by the drop section at Albert Hijn (grocery store) are far nicer, but the selection is more limited. Perhaps start there if you are a novice, as the drop at Albert's is hard enough for novices. You have to really like hard licorice or like to dislike it a lot, to make it worth working with her. But, truely great, almost curated selection. does not give samples nor make them (e.g., 3 of 10 kinds). you have to buy 100 g of a flavor. maybe 50g. there was often a line, but a short, fast one. so, buy some, sample, come back for more samples until you find what you like or can really dislike. worth going to and treating as a museum of licorice, or as they say, drop. I would go back, but pretend to be Dutch or non-US.

Yelp
What's not to love about licorice?!?! Quaint store in a lovely location. The proprietor, a nice ma'am, helped us navigate the walls of licorice since there was such a selection. We "settled" on a double salt, a caramel, a blueberry, and a black pepper. Looking forward to trying them all!! Thanks, ma'am, for the great help and hospitality!

Yelp
This is a specialty licorice store, the owner was very pleasant and took her time explain to us how licorice is made. She buys her products from local manufacturers. I am not a fan of licorice however the store was very interesting and worth seeing if you are in the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam. Apparently there is no such thing as red licorice that we sell and eat in large quantities in the US. When we left she gave us some free licorice to take home.

Yelp
Owner was very rude. I asked for assistance in choosing drop and she said minimum purchase is 50 grams. No samples. She doesn't seem to like foreigners which is odd given the majority of customers. She also wouldn't let me take a photo of the sign of the one I liked so I could remember the name. The vendors at the markets are much kinder and more helpful

Yelp
An incredibly quaint shop. Candy surrounds the customer in glass jars. I was waited on by the nicest person who was incredibly patient as I asked about the different sweets, hoping to bring different treats home. So much to choose from and everything I brought home didn't disappoint.

Amy S.

Yelp
This woman is as miserable as everyone says. Not friendly and rude. I wanted to take a picture to show my family, and was told no. She points to a tiny sign posted up high in the corner with a camera and a line thru it. I don't see what the big deal is. She acts as tho she's going you a favour serving you droopies. I found a much better Dutch candy store on on Regulliersbreestraat 30. More variety, more accessible, nicer staff.

Yelp
Another one of the 5 must see's on my Amsterdam list! I'm a HUGE fan of salty, hard licorice. Not the soft crap we call licorice here in the states. No, this store knows what's up! I had to seek this spot out and I'm soo glad I did! My friend visited a few years ago and knowing my love for licorice she brought me back a bag and I've been pining over it since! I was warned that the shop keeper was as salty as her licorice! All the sweeter the challenge , eh? when I arrived the shop was closed. I was horrified I'd miss my chance only to see the shop owner seated outside. She assured me it would open I. 30 minutes! I waited! Finally into my own version of willy wonk land, I had my pick of over 100 types of black salty licorice!(my mouth is watering just typing this!) I asked the shop keeper if she'd suggest some to me. When I told her the saltier the better, I couldn't tell if she was pleased or felt challenged! Either way, i ended up with a nice big bag of salty licorice and a few smiles from the shop keeper. She even allowed me to take some photos in her shop explaining she doesn't like photos taken when kids are in her shop. Seems just her licorice is salty! Left a happy girl and still have my bag of licorice they I'm proportionally separating so to last longer! Thrilled to hear she does have an online store! Also, she was right! The 3 and 4th salty is way to salty for this American girl.

Yelp
Came here to purchase licorice for family. As mentioned, the owner doesn't seem to dig tourists and was kind of snotty. The shop, however, is really beautiful and as long as you don't have questions and don't need recommendations, you should be good.

M S.

Yelp
Don't go here unless you like really rude service and overpriced dropje. Even though we were the only customers in the store, the sales person (owner according to the photo on the website) couldn't have been more surly. At one point when I changed my mind about one of the candies I had chosen, she even muttered something under her breath, as if I had committed some gaffe so egregious that it was impossible for her to let it pass without making an audible comment. The service was particularly bewildering since we purchased 10 Euros worth of candy in her shop. So, unless you enjoy the awkward game of smiling politely while an ornery sales clerk makes an ass out of herself at your expense, save your money and go to Albert Heijn for the same dropje at half the price. Happily, this was the only sour note on an amazing three-day layover in Amsterdam.

Yelp
The shop owner was incredibly unwelcoming and rude to us. We waited in line for a good 15 minutes while she was super kind to local children as they took a long time to pick out their sweets, which was fine with us. When it was my turn she super unfriendly, didn't want to answer our questions as to her recommendations, and acted as if we were an inconvenience to her. There was a large licorice selection, but I preferred what we bought at the grocery store. I do not recommend this shop!

Grace H.

Yelp
Shop is beautiful, but owner is extremely rude towards tourists. So it's worth visiting but be aware.

Yelp
I get to Amsterdam fairly regularly and I always stop here. They have one of the best selections of licorice that I know of. Sweet and salty (and very salty) black and flavored (they don't believe red is licorice). If you like licorice, this is heaven. If you don't, it's a good candy store, and they can let you taste some licorice that may change your mind b
