It was our first time here. The service was excellent. The food was acceptable although nothing stood out but it was enjoyable. A bit let down on the ramen because it was no where close as tonkatsu ramen. Other than that it a good place to eat, but not the ramen though. 😊

This was a disappointing dining experience. Although the restaurant looks quite new from the outside, the interior was worn down and not well maintained. We were seated in a small overflow room near the washrooms, where the bench seating had holes and the tables were scorched all over (the photos don't even do justice to how bad it looked in person). The place didn’t feel very clean, and the service was indifferent at best. We ordered à la carte to try a variety of premium meats—filet mignon, Angus beef, premium kalbi, and A5 Wagyu, etc.—but most were tough and barely chewable. Portions were tiny—for instance, the $6 steamed spinach was just a bite-size. The A5 Wagyu was acceptable, while the filet mignon was the only dish that felt worth the price. The only redeeming qualities were its easy-to-find location and that one decent dish. Unfortunately, everything else—from food quality to ambiance to service—fell short. Not recommended.

I had an amazing experience at this Japanese BBQ restaurant! The quality of the meat was outstanding — fresh, tender, and full of flavor. The atmosphere was cozy and authentic, perfect for a relaxed dinner. What really made the night special was our server, Khoa — they were incredibly attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. They made sure our grill was always just right and offered great recommendations. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Really enjoyed the restaurant. Loved being able to cook our own food. So much food when you order the combos for two.

Google
Great service. It was quite a bit busy when we came by, even with a reservation, had a 15 min wait. The food was good. We had the meat lovers set to share. Would have liked to have a large teapot to enjoy, I felt I bothered the waitress so much, always asking for a refill (I love my green tea). Self cooking was fun, got to burn my meat, and chatted with my partner. Miso starter had a great taste. I just had to mention this because not all muso soups are noteworthy. They played Kpop and other Japanese style music, which improved the atmosphere. Dessert was a s'more, came with the set. Great overall. Thank you.

Google
A great option for fine meat, excellent taste and plenty of options for everyone! The service is great and they are patient and explain the dishes really well! I will definitely come back next time! And it’s very fun to cook it yourself on the table!

Google
Overall, great atmosphere. Preferred Ordered a rice bowl with karaage, spicy cucumber and deep fried gyoza. I enjoyed the cucumber and the karaage was made well and very lightly fried. The gyoza and the rice bowl however were very mushroom forward. It's not a taste I was necessarily expecting from Japanese food. The lettuce they served in the rice bowl was also over dressed. The dressing tasted great, but could have done with far less. Admittedly you come here for the BBQ options so I'll be back to try that!

Google
This is one of Calgary's better japanese BBQ restaurants. The concept, theme, and atmosphere are very unique and provide a wonderful dining experience with family or friends. The food is fantastic and the meat is superbly fresh and marinated wonderfully. That being said, I often find the steak can be tough or chewy. Also, the grill in the center of the table isn't something you see very often and it makes for an intimate dining adventure (but be careful, its hot!) The staff are always friendly and clearly work their hardest to be attentive. I've eaten here 6 or 7 times and I've only been disappointed by one appetizer and a plate of Angus beef, but I won't hold it against them. It's about $100 for two people plus a tip, so we tend to reserve trips here for special occasions. If it's a weekend go early to find parking.

Yelp
Starting from we walked in. Greet well. Asked if we had done this before. Explained how they do it, so no surprises. Helped us start. The food though So good. Not loud. Every table could have their conversations without impacting others experience. They changed the grills for us without having to ask. And, allowed to set the temp for our taste. Will go back and highly recommend

Yelp
I checked out Gyu Kaku in Calgary awhile back after trying Gyu-Kaku in Vancouver. The atmosphere was nice, but the service and food was less than expected for the price...so I'd give it 7/10

Yelp
We were staying at a nearby hotel and decided to walk over to this restaurant for dinner. We were seated right away. The menu was a bit overwhelming at first because there were so many options. We decided on the Chef's Choice BBQ combo with a side of deep fried gyoza. Our food arrived fairly quickly. Our server was great at explaining about all the different cuts and how long to cook each item. We started our meal with miso soup and a bowl of salad. Then the kimchi and beef nigiri arrived. The kimchi provided a nice balance from all the meat items. The beef nigiri (gyu-sushi) was interesting. The beef was tender and sort of refreshing with the green onion and hint of wasabi. Then all the other cuts of meat and bbq items were dropped off - prime kalbi short rib, skirt steak, filet mignon, ribeye, pork belly, shrimp and lastly broccoli and cheese. There was enough variety to try. The beef sukiyaki bibimbap provided the much needed carbs to complete the meal. I did think the broccoli and cheese item was weird at first, but we followed our server's recommendation to use the cheese as a dip for the other BBQ items. It actually tasted pretty good! I cannot give any feedback on the gyoza but my child did finish the whole order so I assume it was good. The ventilation could be a bit better. I felt like I smelled of dinner when I got back to my hotel room. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this meal and plan to return on my next visit to Calgary. Overall, 4.5 star experience.

Yelp
Wow! Amazing service, amazing food. The vibe is so chill. Go here for your Japanese BBQ fix! The pricing is excellent and the portions are decent. I would definitely come here again.

Yelp
First time going to this restaurant. The menu looked quite interesting, so I went with my son out of curiosity. We ordered four meat items (all beef) with a bowl of rice. Each meat item weighed approximately 3.25grams (so the waitress says). We also ordered s'more for dessert. For the price I paid of approximately $95.00 we left the restaurant still hungry. This place is expensive for the amount of food you get. The service was okay considering they only have to serve you the raw meat and you cook it yourself. There's really nothing much that you need other than making sure you get your water refill. The ambiance was okay.

Yelp
Upon hearing raving reviews from a coworker, I decided to order some takeout. I opted for their 3-meat item bento combo, which comes with a bed of rice, salad, miso soup, s'mores, and its popular hot & spicy sauce and sweet soy sauce (my fav sauce of the two). This is all priced at $22.95, and is recommended for 1.5-2 people. For the meat, I chose Kalbi Chuck Rib Sweet Soy Tare, Toro Beef Sweet Soy Tare, and the Chicken Thigh Basil. True to its description, I was able to make 2 meals out of this - bang for its buck! Everything was fresh and tasted delicious. I was reminded of the excellent meat quality that Gyu-Kaku is known for, but was also sadly reminded of the moderately accompanied meat portions. I definitely had to plan the consumption of the meat accordingly with each bite (am I the only one who does stuff like this??) But I had expected this, so this was not a surprise. Gyu-Kaku definitely prioritizes quality over quantity, which is not a bad thing when you are forewarned. Also, this might not be a huge factor for most people, but I love how soft and moist their rice is. Ok, so I'm sure most people do this, but I am going to throw this out there in case there are anyone looking for some tips on how best to consume this.... so skip this if you wish. Swish the meat gently onto the sauce that is provided in the combo (gentle as if you are treading on water, not drench or soak), and then bundle the bottom of the meat with rice so that the sauce transfers over ever so generously, and then ... EAT! This is a triple combo attack. So this combo gives you enough meal to last 2 meals, provides an appetizer, entree, AND dessert! The s'mores are packed in a way that you can eat it whenever, unlike most desserts that has to be consumed immediately to maintain its freshness. What is there not to like?

Yelp
Loved this place! We had a private room to ourselves and got to cook our meats and chat without too much noise. It was pretty Chill. I had the bimbimbpap which was so delicious and my bf had the thick garlic noodles.

Yelp
Overall rating is 3 stars, 4 star for food and staffs 2.5 stars for corporate policy on requiring CC# so they can charge you $20/person in case you don't show up or cancel within 24 hrs. Bad first impression! They use Open Table to book reservations so they limit how long you can enjoy your special night out to maximize table turnovers. Not so friendly and welcoming experience. Good thing the staffs made up for Birthday celebrations.

Yelp
I was excited to find Japanese barbecue while on a business trip in Calgary. I got the garlic veggie noodles, garlic hanger beef, eggplant, zucchini and takoyaki. They bring it to your table and even tell you how long to cook it on each side, which is quite handy. It resulted in my beef being done perfectly. And I haven't had takoyaki this good since I was in Japan. Congrats to the chef! I topped it all off with black sesame mochi. Delicious! The decor is nothing to write home about but the excellent food more than makes up for it. It's always a good sign when you see Japanese families eating at a Japanese restaurant.

Yelp
Lunch with the family today. Our first time here. Our waitress was actually a Manager and amazingly kind and helpful. She explained the lunch options, how we could best try a variety of meats, showed us how to cook our food and more! We ordered a 2 meat lunch for our son and a 3 meat lunch for us adults. Our meal came with salad, miso soup and a big bowl of rice. Our assorted meats arrived and we were told the ideal amount of time to cook our items. It smelled amazing as it sizzled in the middle of our table. Midway through, our grill rack was changed for cleanliness and reduce sticking. We ordered filet mignon, basil chicken, spicy pork, pork belly and two other beef cuts. It all tasted fantastic! Each morsel was scrumptious and we can't wait to return to try the veggies, chicken karaage and ramen! At the end of our meal, we were given peel off tickets to be used from now until March wirh $10. Off our next meal. I can't wait to return! I highly recommend this place for tasty Asian flavoured grilled meats and special occasions. It's a fun, interesting and interactive way to share food.

Yelp
I always liked Gyu-Kaku. I have been to the one in Vancouver many times and decided to come here for lunch. They have two kind of lunch specials here. One is called the Calgary Lunch Special for $12.95 you get to pick two items to BBQ or 3 items for $15.95. The Calgary lunch special comes with miso soup, salad and rice. Or you can get the Non-Grill Lunch set for 1 person. They have various options for $9.95 Bowl/ bibimbap set (comes with soup and salad). The Non-grill lunch set is also available in Vancouver so guessing that is why its not called "Calgary special" or "Calgary Non-Grill Lunch set" I got the beef Sukiyaki bibimbap set. I was served on a stone bowl and was nice and hot all the way through. The staff would mix the bibimbap for you. I have to say I loved it. It was very delicious. But again Gyu-Kaku never fails me. Décor was nice and clean. The place can get pretty hot here because you have the BBQ grill in front of you. Also the place isn't big so you must make a reservation. I highly recommend coming here during lunch time.

Yelp
I love this Gyu-Kaku branch. More bigger than their other branch in Flushing. I love how the tables are arranged. If you want to see the city view, you can request to be seated by the window. Not only that... if you have someone special to bring on a date.. I recommend asking for the window seat tables :) You can choose to be seated facing the city view while cooking/eating your favorite dishes ^_^ Their ambiance is okay, cleanliness of the venue is good. Service crew memebers are nice and accommodating. They have one common restroom which is also clean and pretty big for 1 person (no changing table for babies, but can fit 2-3 persons... if you have kids that need help to go to the bathroom). The food is really good. We ordered the fried Squid Cartilage (also known as Calamari), Avocado Salad + Chicken (you can add Chicken or Tuna. The chicken is a little spicy), Chili Shrimp Shumai (We asked for just the mild Spicy Shumai...-but there's no hint of that mild spiciness, so order the regular one), Bistro Hangar Steak, Shrimp Garlic, Sukiyaki Bibimbap (This was one of the dishes in the happy hour choices). The Bibimbap that I ordered is... more of rice with just a little beef on it. For our dessert, we had the Chocolate Lava Cake with Green Tea Ice Cream on the side and their Yakimochi Ice Cream - a must try! (both desserts are really good and are well presented especially the mochi Ice Cream with different flavors inside). I will definetly come back and recommend this place to my family and friends.

Yelp
Bbq time! We were looking for a bbq restaurant that was different from korean all you can eat, so we decided to try out Gyu-Kaku. We had to wait a little bit before we got seated, but that's okay as we came 30 minutes before out reservation and we were seated within 10 minutes. We ordered their $165 meal that was good for 6 people, plus takoyaki, ramen, and some beers. Everything tasted great and the sauces they provide pair well with all the meat and veggies. Wouldn't recommend the ramen as it wasn't the best, but definitely not the worst and takoyaki was just meh. Service was quick and our server was very personable and attentive. Another nice thing they do is they offer points and if you get up to 500 points, you get $25 your next visit! The only thing that was sad was that they didn't have any high chairs and just had a booster seat with no harness. Since we brought the little one we had to bring her carseat in so she could sit better while munching down some tasty food with us. Would probably go back since my whole family really enjoyed the bbq menu.

Yelp
I'm always the type of gal who lofts when cooking my own food. I usually grab a few people when I'm heading over to Korean BBQ so I can gorge while others do the grunt work. Armed with my 2 friends, we sauntered over during the weekday for a lunch. It wasn't busy, but we had just avoided the rush. The place is decorated minimally, but quite tasteful in decor. The wooden booths were a nice touch with excellent grills that they changed if need be - not letting char build up like other places. You definitely get what you pay for at this place. I recommend getting specials if you can because it adds up with a la carte. We tried the Happy Hour course for 2. You can split amongst 3 instead because there's just that much food! The meat was seasoned well! My favourite cuts were the beef, beef ribs, and chicken. The filet mignon was lacking in flavour. The broccoli in a packet of foil was delicious and nicely complimented all the meat. Hands down, the Beef Sukiyaki Bibimbap was what I loved. It was perfectly cooked in the stone pot to give it the combo of the crunchy texture and full of so much flavour. We finished off the meal with mochi ice cream which was tasty. I loved the softer texture of the mochi surrounding the ice cream. However, the maple syrup ice cream was nothing special with maple syrup topping on vanilla ice cream.

Marton B.

Yelp
$100 for myself and my cutie. WOW , I think I had some of the best meat ever here... I cant remember what it was called but basically ordered this premium meat combo with a lot of different steaks that we got to cook ourselves over the fire pit in the middle of the table. An unforgettable experience.

Jesse K.

Yelp
The food was great, especially for the price. The waitress we had was super friendly and service was on point, keeping the food coming. It was a very relaxing atmosphere and quiet. Will be returning again for a date night instead of with a friend this time

Sam G.

Yelp
Busy place! You NEED to make a reservation. Unfortunately, we did not... However the hostess made things worked by squeezing us in between reservations. It was a very kind gesture and we really appreciated it as we were both starving! We were very happy that this was our first meal in Calgary. It was delicious! And I get why it was so popular. Meat was high quality and they give you instructions on how to cook it. Cocktails were refreshing. The servers were all very accommodating and were very sweet. This was an easy 5 star rating.

Yelp
Dinner with the family at Gyu-kaku for Happy Hour! Happy hour ends at 5pm. Made Renovations for 4:30pm and got there a bit earlier after a long day. When we got there, they seemed very confused. Soon we found out we got a super small table for 5 people. My brother had to sit in the aisle, even tho there were plenty if empty seat elsewhere. That aside we ordered two of the happy hour special. It is dinner for two for $55, originally $81. Comes with two miso soup, salad, dumpling, stone rice (sukiyaki beef), three beef plates, one chicken, one pork, broccoli, and mushroom. On the side we got the beef garlic noodles, tuna volcano, and cheese wonton. Dinner was very delicious, i miss bbq but this is as close as it can get! For the happy hour price this is well worth it! I do wish we got a bigger table because it was very tight for 5 ppl and we did not have much room to place the food and consistently got bothered to clear the table. My brother got the short end of the stick and had to sit in the busy walk way. Luckily their food was pretty good for happy hour, the experience was pretty fun as well.

Yelp
How can it be so much fun to go out for dinner and COOK? I want to go back to this restaurant. It's a bit pricey but when I look at the cost of meat in my grocer, I realize you get a LOT for what you pay for. You can order a la carte or in 'value packs'. There is a happy hour with great discount specials and I really want to return for that. This is a well-oiled ship. The service was extraordinarily good. The place was jumping and still; our drinks were refilled plentifully, dishes exchanged often and friendly inquiries made as to our enjoyment. I LOVE the sauces, the chicken karaage was tender and not oily, the salad was memorable and it was the first time I have ever seen what the fuss about edamame is. It tastes great and is just so much fun. The server tells you how long to cook each cut of meat and the veggies come in little packs to put on the grill. There were families, dates, groups of people and the ambiance was dimly lit with a very attractive decor.

Yelp
This is an awesome Japanese BBQ place to go to if you're craving for these types of food. I ordered the Miso Butter Ramen noodles, and it is delicious!! My dad ordered the Karaage rice bowl with the spicy sauce on the side. The prices are phenomenonal, and the location is easy to find. They were able to seat is in even though we didn't have a reservation. I took some pictures of the menu and our food. The menu in the other original pictures are 9 months old, and you can't use the specials menu on a holiday. Only on a regular day? So that was a bit disappointing. The ramen is $10 on the regular lunch menu. They only have two kinds. And the karaage bowl is $9. That's a very phenomenonal price!!! I will definitely go to this restaurant again when we're going to Calgary!! Without further a do... The pictures!!

Genegie B.

Yelp
One of the best Japanese BBQ place I have ever been. We ordered the Samurai (4 people) food set & cocktails. The cocktails were amazing, the food was better than I expected in quality & taste. The service was slow, and seemed always busy or maybe understaffed? The price is a little high for some, but it can be offset by going to certain time of the day to receive discounted food items (further details on their website). Overall, great food, great atmosphere, an ok service, and a tad pricey for me (but worth it). I would go back again, during happy hour.

Anita C.

Yelp
Very impressed with this place! The service is excellent, prompt, polite and attentive. For two people we got the premium meat lovers with the bibimbop and it was plenty! We were stuffed by the end of the meal. Yes, you are basically paying to cook your own food, but they prepare it for you, presented nicely and some are marinated. Everything in small bites tastes delicious. The soup is just the right amount of sodium, the salad is balanced well with the right amount of ingredients, chicken karaage comes out piping hot and the bibimbop is actually served in a hot stone bowl that cooks the rice while you're enjoying your meats (unlike Anju). We liked the real chopsticks as it is nice to sit down at a restaurant and not have to pull apart and sand down your utensils before you eat. It is a bit loud and smokey obviously, but they do have a coat check if you ask, that reduces the smell to your outerwear a bit. They probably don't have a strong exhaust system, so your clothes and hair will smell afterwards, but it's a fun place and I would recommend it and also will visit again!

Naomi M.

Yelp
Great service Staff chatty and outgoing Loved this place Good delish Going back for sure!!!

Pixie V.

Yelp
It was my must go to location a few years ago. But now I'm feeling like the taste of their bbq is falling down a bit. I found my new favourite Korean style bbq place(I know I know, it is a Japanese bbq place, but it is actually Korean style, not Japanese styled.) I've shared a video on my food Instagram account @eat.with.viki But overall it is on the top of my list of Calgary's Korean bbq places. Not number one, maybe like top 5.

Emmanuel L.

Yelp
It was okay. I'd much prefer a all you can eat hotpot unsteady of this. For the price you probably won't get full unless you spend a fortune.

Justine B.

Yelp
Gyu-Kaku is by far, my favourite restaurant in Calgary. I have waited all my life to try Japanese yakiniku-style cuisine, and my high expectations are always met here. The food is just delicious. We always get a varying degree of chef-made dishes, and raw meats and vegetables to grill ourselves. My fiancé absolutely adores the Beef and Garlic noodles, from the way they serve it in a hot stone bowl, to the perfect ratio of garlic and spice they use. My personal favourite, and I have yet to visit without ordering this, is the Yaki-Shabu beef. It is thinly sliced and cooks quickly over the grill, and the wonderful flavour of the marinade pairs perfectly with a bowl of steamed rice, sprinkled with some of their sweet soy sauce! The place is also very well ventilated, so you need not worry about liking your meat a little TOO well-done. It's always hard to choose dessert, with your options ranging from deliciously rich chocolate cake, to soft and chewy mochi ice cream. They have traditional Taiyaki, or you can choose to roast smores over your grill! As for the service, every waitor and waitress you come across is helpful, tentative and kind. We never have any problems flagging down somebody for another order, and they make the rounds to refill drinks often. Our food always arrives quickly, and the wait staff is nothing short of perfectly coordinated. So is there any reason not to recommend this restaurant to your friends and family? Of course not! If I had to change anything at all, it would be the volume of the music they play overhead, only because sometimes you will find yourself shouting across the table. However, you really start to not notice it, and for all the pros of eating here, it really won't make a difference! I really cannot wait until I get the chance to eat here again.

Maria L.

Yelp
I've been to Gyu-Kaku in downtown Calgary twice for dinner. Japanese BBQ is always fun! Atmosphere: 4/5 Modern, neat and relaxed atmosphere. Tables were big enough to accommodate all the food with a grill in the middle. It was not too hot or cold, and the restaurant was generally well ventilated. Located conveniently in downtown Calgary Food: 4/5 The first time I came, we had the Geisha for 2, one of their 'value BBQ courses for 2 people.' There was definitely enough food for the two of us. The tuna tataki and filet mignon were probably my favorite items. I like that this course also came with some vegetables like the mushroom medley and spinach garlic. Finishing off with s'mores was great - I haven't had one in a really long time! The second time I came, we were not that hungry so decided to order a la carte. Unfortunately some of the items we wanted to try were not available. We ended up getting orders of harami miso skirt steak, bistro hanger steak, pork belly, gyu kaku salad and shrimp garlic noodles. It was also possible to substitute some of the marinades. Overall, the items were all quite tasty. I would've probably liked a little less marinade but I also prefer blander food hahaha... Service: 4/5 The waiters were very knowledgeable and great at explaining how do-it-yourself BBQ worked. They even gave specific times for cooking the various items, which we tried hard to remember. Overall friendly and efficient service. It can get quite busy so reservations are definitely advised Price: 3/5 Can get a bit pricey for dinner but you can always go during happy hour when they have some deals Overall: 4/5 I enjoyed my Japanese BBQ experience! It was neat to find something like this in downtown Calgary. I would probably return during lunch or happy hour to try some of their other items.

Yelp
Been wanting to visit since they opened. I finally went last month during lunch with several coworkers. I ordered the garlic noodle lunch special which comes with a salad and soup (had the miso) and added shrimp for $1. The salad and miso soup were fine. The garlic noodle looked promising but in the end it lacked flavor. It was presented nicely with a sizzling stone pot, but the noodles were over cooked and needed more garlic flavor. Luckily they have a variety of sauces for the bbq and I used some to salvage the noodles. All in all it was fine. Step above food court but not worth the hype. Will need to return for the bbq lunch set. Reservations are available online via OpenTable.

Yelp
That food was great the service was good. But 2 things happen that I am not going to let go. So came bye to change out grill top and then for got turned it back down. So almost burn all of are meat it was like they trying to move us along. But the hole restaurant was empty! so that make me very unhappy and meal came a dessert and that fine. But only certain ones but then I asked him if I could pay the difference in price to get the ones I really wanted and they told me a big fat NO. I felt that mangers where just being VERY LAZY and the did bother with me. So that why I come to yelp! To let other how LAZY The management were being!!! So next you look Japanese barbecue place. Maybe try somewhere else!! And not fight the down town area!!!

Christine L.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my lunch experience here. I'm not normally a fan of do-it-yourself bbq, but the fans work well here. No stink after. The service was lovely. Kudos to the staff. The price for lunch $13.99 (3 type of meats, rice, salad and soup) was good value. My tip? Go with a group of people and just order a whole whack of meats and figure out which one is your favourite. Mine was spicy pork. Everything was good and we tried almost every single cut of meat. I plan to go again for dinner very soon with my husband. The whole experience was fun and pleasant.

Yelp
Small amount portion meat! Over pricey. Two of us order $88 meat lover combo and we had to order extra food coz the small portions. And the meat was chopped different sizes, like left over food. Sooooo disappointments! Won't back again

Simme W.

Yelp
Highly recommended the brunch combo they have. I had the weekend brunch combo. It's cheaper than the dinner combos. The meats are good. I will be back! I think the Gyu-Kaku here is better than the one in Hong Kong. Perhaps the fact that it's Alberta beef (I am not sure about that.)

Lily V.

Yelp
So glad we called before coming because it was shortly after they opened on a Thursday and it was already quite busy. I overheard people waiting when we left had about an hour to go. The service is very friendly - our server was very polite and explained how long to cook each item as she dropped it off. The manager visited our table twice throughout the course of our meal, which was nice. The staff work as a team and cleared our plates away if they walked by and saw we were finished with a dish. We ordered the Geisha plus a few additional items for variety. Took advantage of the $2 Sapporo ($5 after the first round) and were happily full after. The meats were delicious and the shrimp were huge! Some notes: the miso soup could use some salt/flavour, the namuru plate was also disappointing and lacked seasoning. I didn't like the salad dressing since it tasted like a vinegar-y mayo. Definitely worth it to get the crispy garlic/chili sauce for $1 as well as the scallion sauce. We ended up mixing those two with everything and it was deeeelish!! It was fun to toast our own marshmallows for the dessert s'mores and I loved that our server changed the grill before we switched to sweets! Great touch! Overall, it was good and I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Tired of KBBQ and want a new experience? Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ will sweep you off your feet! The newly hottest Japanese restaurant is located on 6 Ave SW (the corner of 6 Ave Sw and 6 St SW) and is minutes away from The Core. If you haven't heard about or been to Gyu-Kaku then I strongly recommend in doing so. My experience was beyond phenomenal and being the first time there they treat you like you're a loyal customer. When you enter through their doors you'll be greeted by one of their hostess now depending on what day and time you go, you'll either be seated right away or would have to wait a bit but in my case I got lucky since there was no waiting and we got seated right away. The server asked us if we been to Gyu-Kaku before and we said no, she explained to us about the menu choices and how it works. Roughly it's like any KBBQ place that you've been to minus the AYCE. There are set courses per group of people dining and an order section. Prices reflect on what you get per order and sadly since it is not all you can eat so once you're done, you're done unless you decide to pay and order more food in. I've never been so intrigue on how they carefully marinated their meat selection and a big bonus because they tell you how long you should cook each individual food item for. Yes you can wing it and cook however the way you like it but for best health practices it is strongly recommended to follow what your server has said. The experience and the quality of the food is amazing and I would strongly recommend Gyu-Kaku.

Yelp
A few GFs and I met here for lunch, two of which had been here a few times already and wanted me to try it. As much as I wanted to do the table top BBQ option (pork belly!), I was advised it was quite time consuming. So I went with the Garlic noodle set which came with soup and a salad. All our food came out super fast! Everything is bright and inviting (amazing what a few chopped red peppers and green onions will do!) and the noodles came in a (really) hot stone bowl so my food stayed piping hot while I ate. They do not skimp on the garlic for the noodles, this can be a blessing or a curse, I'll let you decide lol We were in and out in less than an hour and it only cost me under $15 for a decent meal. You don't get that very often downtown!

Yelp
First dinner in town upon arrival. We opted to walk here from our hotel because we had a huge SUV which I wasn't too comfortable driving at night when I didn't know where I was going. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Although we arrived near closing, we still got decent service. No AYCE. They have different set menus and it tells how many people it will feed. We had a party of 6, but we elected to order a set menu for four and then added items a la cart. This way we had a good base and then personalized it with our favorites. Overall, it was a good experience and we enjoyed it.

Yelp
Opened for 3 months in downtown Calgary. Free parking after 6 pm & Sunday. Reservation required in advance recommended. Nice Decor, fast friendly service. All Japanese BBQ, kinda similar to Korean BBQ, no sushi or sashimi. Its interesting but nothing really surprising. Foods are good. Pretty good price $30-$50/ person. Music were a bit too loud for dinning room. Ambient - 4 Service - 4 Foods - 4

Yelp
Empty tables, yet not able to be seated. This was the strangest thing. Walked in waited a couple minutes to get noticed. Guy comes asks how many? We say 2. He looks at his tablet and asked "do you have a reservation?" We did not. I mentioned the empty tables and was told those were for the 8pm and 9:30 pm reservations. What a totally flawed business model. Turn away paying customers, when there were at least 6 empty tables. Very disappointed. First and last time.

Yelp
We had a great trip me at Gyu-Kaku Yes the funniest name ever waning The Horn of the Bull - With all due respect. Considering the eatery has food u cook for yourself at the table the smoke level is not bothersome in the restaurant. The food was amazing. The special menu beef worth it. The experience great if your up to having fun with your food. The sauce bottles can be less sticky. Restrooms cleaner. The appetizers were okay. In seafood we really enjoyed the salmon not the shrimps though. The chicken gets a little sticky to cook on the stove but the beef does very well. The broccoli with the cheese sauce is a good experience and great flavour as well. I yet have to try miso. It was too hot for me in the summer. Waiting in Edmonton for Gyu-Kaku

Yelp
I went here last night with a friend and had a great experience. I live in Richmond BC and we have a Gyu there. I haven't been able to go because they are always very busy. We had the meat lovers package. It was great. Food was seasoned well, waiter was attentive. I will come back for sure :)

Yelp
Having spent some time in Japan, the atmosphere definitely has a bit of that feel to it. It is on the small side but is cozy. Service was fantastic! The food was a bit below expectation, especially given the 700 global locations. We had some calamari that was on the soggy side. The cuts of meat for the grill were average. Draft Asahi saves the day though!

Yelp
Awesome place, took the menu for 4. Great quality products and you don't have to be scared you'll leave this place hungry. Great place to catch up with friends or family over a long and fun meal. Service was quick and very good.

Yelp
The service staff are very nice and attentive and polite! Our server came to check on us frequently and make sure everything was good and our drinks were filled! It's very busy but the staff are efficient, our food took no time at all to make it to us. The food itself is incredibly delicious! Super high quality, it's very very good I'm very impressed. It's also quite clean here as well which is a plus!

Yelp
Great lunch and happy hour specials. I ordered the lunch special that comes salad, rice and miso soup with your choice of 2 or 3 kinds of BBQ meat for $13.95 and $16.95 respectively. I also added $2 for the broccoli. I got the miso hanger steak and filet mignon. Both were delicious and went really well with the rice. Service was prompt and good. Download the guy-kaku app for discounts and freebies!

Yelp
First thing: it is good to be safe and book a reservation as due to the atmosphere, large groups quickly fill up the tables. I went for lunch on a Sunday and the place was packed. The main issue I had was due to a party of ten the servers were preoccupied so it took 20 minutes to order drinks (after I flagged down a server). This was easy to overlook as the food was seasoned well and fun to prepare with friends. For brunch you can choose two meats along with an appetizer and a soup, salad and rice for $16.95 or three meats for $19.95. Certain cuts of meat are extra if you choose but I found these combos to be relatively cheap for a fun lunch out. Also since it's downtown there is no restaurant parking for those who have never been. There is an indigo lot two blocks down with $5 parking though.

Yelp
I'm only giving Gyu-Kaku a mediocre rating because they really shouldn't advertise this place as "Good for kids". First of all they didn't have high chairs, kids menu or the possibility to order more cooked food as opposed to cooking at the table. I realize that's part of the appeal, but if you have a 2yo not in a high chair, they can easily reach and topple over the hot stove. It's poorly designed for families with younger kids. As for the food, we ordered a couple bibimbap bowls and I must say the hole-in-the-wall at Chinatown was miles better. Overall it was okay. Not coming back until my youngest is at least 5.

Yelp
Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ is located on 6 Ave SW downtown Calgary. It was my "N" times having lunch at Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ, but it was my first time having food at Calgary location. Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ has three locations in Vancouver and one in Calgary. The one I've been is in Calgary. The same as before, I have ordered lunch combo - Beef Tofu pot with salad. The price of the food was a little bit more expensive than Vancouver locations. The salad was fresh and the taste of the salad was the same as other places. The tofu soup was different from other locations. The taste was decent, but I like Vancouver more. In summary, the food in Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ was OK. Not very excited. Miss Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ in Vancouver.

Yelp
This place is dope. They're able to see me even though I was by myself. It has a good atmosphere but recommend doing it with a group.
