"You might not think of Vienna as a very Greek city, but guess what: The oldest restaurant in town is the Griechenbeisl, the Greek Tavern. Back in the late 15th century, Levantine traders lodged in this building on Fleischmarkt street, and its hodgepodge of rooms in which many a historic figure have dined hasn’t changed much since. The walls of the Mark Twain Room are decorated with autographs by the great scribe and many other notable figures. Despite its name, the Greek Tavern specializes in schnitzel and other dishes that are as pure Austrian as can be. And the live music you enjoy while dining won't be made by a bouzouki, but by a Viennese zither. Out front there is a plaque commemorating the 17th-century minstrel Marx Augustin, famous as the subject of the song "Oh Du Lieber Augustin."

Great little historical restaurant - came here because of the reviews of their famous pork knuckle and it did not disappoint! We came hungry so we decided to get some starters, which was not a wise move… The pork knuckle is huge and I would even say you could share with 3 people. The skin was cooked to perfection and truly crackling with amazing flavor. Comes with 2 types of sauerkraut but we also ordered a portion of fries which was delicious. For the starters, we tried the consommé soup and the duo of foie gras and beef tartar. Both were stunning - in particular the presentation and flavor of the foie gras and beef tartar. Highly recommend. We also saw every table order the schnitzel and it did look amazing (wish I had ordered that too). Service - absolutely outstanding. Friendly waiters who are attentive and prompt. Put this place on your list in Vienna - make sure you reserve on a weekend.

Google
We were looking for a nice Viennese Restaurant to complete our last dinner in Vienna. We chanced upon Griechenbeisl on the Google map, not knowing it has so much history. The crispy pork knuckle was tasty and cooked to perfection. Beef tartar was of high quality. The service displayed by Mr PETER was professional and outstanding. He made the effort to show us Mozart’s and Beethoven’s signatures on the wall, in another room. We had a great dining experience at Griechenbeisl. Thank you so much! Hope to visit Vienna again!

Google
We stumbled upon this place while my wife and I were walking around the narrow walking streets of Vienna. We stopped in just to check it out but once we saw the old styling of the building, the spiral staircase up to the dining area, and the historical drawings and books on the walls and shelves we decided to sit down. The prices were a bit on the high side but it was our anniversary so we sat down to order. I got the Roast pork with Sauerkraut and dumpling. My wife ordered the salad and garlic soup. All the food was delicious. The staff were wonderful. Quick to order drinks and then food. Drinks and food were delivered promptly as well. They were attentive, checking on us frequently. Great atmosphere. Food service and environment all 5 out of 5.

Google
Had a nice experience at Greitchenbeisel. We ordered all the traditional Austrian classics and were not disappointed. Tried a great local beer as well. We were a party of 6 and had to pay a deposit in advance to make a reservation. The waiter said this charge would be reversed after completing the meal. This review is to prove that I was there and completed the reservation. Thank you.

Google
This is the oldest restaurant in Vienna as I know, I can say that still the best food I had in Vienna. Asparagus soup was really delicious and also schnitzel. Very polite staff (especially Mr. Peter and Mr. Adnan were really polite that I would like to thank specially) . I satisfied indeed and recommend everyone and whenever I will visit Vienna, I will come again.

Google
Pretty amazing food and superb staff who are there for all your requests. We tried the soup consume, the Pork and Prawns and all of them were epic. Also had some wine along with it and that too was great.! The staff was very friendly and attentive.

Google
Must go places in Wien. We had delicious Schnitzel with crispy peel, seabass with rice, duck leg with pumpkin puree and goulash. The historical atmosphere also was amazing👏 .

Google
Fantastic historical restaurant in the downtown of Vienna. The restaurant serves traditional Viennese cuisine, big portion and affordable prices. The foods were delicious, their waiters were very professional. They speak English. There was a live music.

Yelp
This restaurant opened in 1447 and is one of the oldest still operating in Europe. This place has hosted the likes of Mozart, Beethoven, Shubert, Mark Twain, Johnny Cash and just about anyone of note in the past 500+ years! You can feel the history in the walls! The food is good, not excellent, and a bit pricey. The service is professional and timely. Try to book the Mark Twain room if you can. This is where all the signatures are. However, there are many rooms for seating as well as promenade seating outside. If you are into history, this is a must stop!

Yelp
Lovely placed tucked just into an alley. I should've known better, but I've been wanting to taste the boiled beef dish. Well, it tasted like boiled beef with boiled potatoes and boiled carrots. Very plain without a lot of flavor. But I should've known better. Another person had goulash, which was served with these flat round dumplings. Another person had the schnitzel And finally the fourth person had the fish. He did not really comment on whether he liked his meal or not. I will say the interior of the restaurant was very quaint, and a guy with a very long stick, came out and pointed out signatures of Mozart, Mark Twain, Johnny Cash, and Phil Collins on the wall It was a fun place... Just skip the boiled beef!

Yelp
We had a great meal here and cannot understand the low rating. The schnitzel was really great. Service was amazing and would come back for the pork for 2 if we had more at our table. The table next to us got it and looked amazing. Completely 100% recommend.

Jen X.

Yelp
The schnitzel here is supposed to be some of the best. It was huge which was nice. I think the bread could be slightly thinner and crispier but it was still pretty good.

Charles W.

Yelp
Prompt seating in a very nice restraint with excellent service and attention. The food was authentic Austrian as well as the spirits. Gave you a real feel of Vienna while dining. Loved the ambiance and vibe of the restraint, deserving of one of the oldest Inns/Pub restaurants in the city.

Yelp
We came to Griechenbeisl for dinner on a Sunday a little after 7pm without a reservation and were able to get a table outdoors (as most places here, there is always outdoor and indoor seating) but we wanted a view of the street and opted for that. The ambiance was very relaxed and the service was attentive. Our server brought us some table bread which was very fresh with a paprika spread while we thought about what drinks and food to order. We got two glasses of white wine which were very good and refreshing. For food we split got: - Smoked duck appetizer: delicious! Really thinly sliced yet flavorful and tender pieces of smoked duck that come with some orange slices and an apple salad that was really similar to coleslaw. Loved the combination of the smoky duck and sweet apple. Really nice presentation. - Fries: very solid thick cut fries! Not greasy and perfectly salted. We purposefully got this with our appetizer round instead of as a side with our main meal. The fries went very well with the salad from the dish above. - Beef goulash: my boyfriend ordered this and it was very generously sized. Really tender meat and a nice flavor of paprika and onions mixed with the meat juices. It came with a dumpling like patty that tasted a little bit like corn and really helped soak up all the sauce. Very comforting and filling dish! - Chicken breast with arugula salad: I got this chicken really expecting a large portion of chicken over a small base of arugula but turned out being more like a salad instead, which was overall good, but I would order something else next time like the schnitzel-- which looked delicious by the way-- to get a better sense of the local cuisine. Felt really light and healthy though if that's what you are looking for! Overall very good service and solid food. The location is lowkey but has a really nice ambiance, especially outside near the street. Stumbled upon this place but really happy we did! Would come back again for a relaxed dinner in Vienna.

Yelp
Yelp Review 2023 #7: Revered as Vienna's oldest restaurant does not equate greatness. I've been to really old restaurants that also had fantastic food. Griechenbeisl was just ok BUT when everything in Vienna is fully booked on Christmas months in advance - any hot meal at a restaurant will do and for that I'm grateful for this place. I made a reservation here 2 months in advance. And sure enough, people with no reservations came here hoping to snag a table - but they had to wait. We arrived 2 hours earlier than our reserved time but they gave us a table anyway. THANK YOU!!! The place does look its age and it's quirky. Google Maps told us we've already arrived - we weeks confused. "It looks like gaudy restaurant that tour groups take you to." So, we kept walking back and forth looking for Griechenbeisl. We went to the side of the door that looks like an entrance but isn't. We were greeted by the friendly host. I told him we were 2 hours but we're hungry. He showed us to our table. All the servers were friendly. The menu is limited. A few soups, appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts. They'll give you a basket of semi-warm bread and pepper cream cheese (like pimiento). We got a pumpkin soup, Wiener schnitzel, pork shoulder that comes with a side of sauerkraut. After being in the Middle East where pork isn't available, I was so happy about that crispy pork shoulder. We skipped dessert. I had specific places bookmarked for that. Overall, the food was alright. The friendliness happens in the beginning and I feel like we waited a long time to place our order, ask for water, and another round of drinks. A 2-course dinner that lasted almost 2 hours. The tables are really close to each other so, it does feel cramped in there and it gets loud. They have a few dining areas.

Yelp
Tucked away off the beaten path, find this traditional and authentic Viennese restaurant and bar, serving since 1447! Enjoyed a deliciously classic Wienerschniztel meal! There are several menu choices for dinners, apps and more. Overall, solid 4.0+ rating for excellent food quality, efficient service and simple ambience (we sat upstairs since not having a reservation). Expect to pay $20-25euro for entrees. Today we started with Alt Wiener Souppentopf (Viennese soup pot for 2); served hot, this hearty broth was filled with diced meat, spaghetti and some veggies. It was a good start on a cool fall-like day. We opted for this knowing we'd get our fill with Wienerschnitzel dinner, which we shared given the generous portion size. Oh what a treat to get one of the classic dishes served in a landmark restaurant! The meat was very thin and tender, breaded and cooked just right - excellent meal! It was served with a simple potato field salad, a nice compliment to the entree. Of course we had to have a cold bier to go with our meal, but they also had plenty of wine choices if desired. Definitely a hidden gem you might not find if only searching or walking the main thoroughfares, but totally worth checking out for a traditional Viennese meal! And remember to drop some coins for Augustin! Enjoy!!

Charlotte W.

Yelp
Staff was very kind and funny. The Wienerschnitzel lives up to its reputation! The atmosphere was nice and fun as well.

Yelp
So we returned 5 years later and this time we both ordered the weekday special, pork Schnitzel, potato and we had a rolled crepe soup, accompanied by a glass of wine. We both had the same thoughts as the previous visit, it was good but we've tasted better schnitzel. On the plus side the schnitzel was pretty large so we asked for a 'go bag' but they left out the potatoes we didn't finish, just gave us the schnitzel. Maybe it was uncouth of us to ask for a go box but it was too much for lunch and we didn't want to waste it. All in all it was a 'good' lunch just not a great lunch.

Kaori T.

Yelp
Griechenbeisl was AMAZING!!!! I was solo and didn't have any reservation, but super luckily I could have the dinner in the Mark Twain room under the Beethoven's signature on the ceiling (and other historical, phenomenal people's signs like Mozart, Schubert, Egon Shile) . The waiter and host were both soo friendly and happily pointed the signature for me with the long stick if you ask where a specific signature is. And the schnitzel was crispy and fresh, too. The complimentary bread and butter were not worthy to fill your stomach though. But the entire experience was just dreamy and I would definitely come back here!!! I just can't thank enough to this place for existing !

Damaris C.

Yelp
Full of history and old charm. How many times do you get to eat at a 600 year old restaurant??? The food was just ok.. wished we would have order the pork knuckle instead. The dessert was delicious, some type of pound cake with plum sauce. Service was good but we went for lunch and wasn't too busy.

Karen J.

Yelp
Excellent experience! Neat decor and location. The beef tar tar was great as a starter. Loved the viewer schnitzel...perfectly done. You must get the strudel for dessert...the best I've had! The ambiance was elevated with the live musician in our room.

Sam P.

Yelp
Nice restaurant in a medieval building . I believe that the location and ambiance are the main attractions but we also loved the food . The best options is likely their schnitzel

Dia D.

Yelp
We had reservations for a Monday night in May which we did not need. Yes, it is a bit touristy but how often do you get to eat at a restaurant that was established in 1447? A place where Beethoven and Mozart have dined. It isn't a far walk from Stephanslatz and they have a very nice patio. The servers were friendly and food arrived quickly. I had the salmon with beet risotto and my husband had the schweinemedalions. Both of our meals were very good. We finished with the seasonal rhubarb strawberry tiramisu which was a sweet and sour treat.

Tom B.

Yelp
What can one say of a restaurant founded in 1447 where such luminaries as Strauss, Shubert, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Wagner, Brahms, famous writers, Einstein and even Mark Twain have dined. We made a reservation in advance and the restaurant was very efficient in communicating by email. When we checked in everything was in place and ready for us. There's a myriad of rooms so finding the entry can be a little confusing. Walk down the vaulted alley to the reception counter. Service was very professional and matter of fact. There was definitely a tone of pleasing us. We ordered a top notch white Austrian wine and it was delicious, a Gruner Vetliner. Austria has some good red wines too and this would be the restaurant to try one. We both had soups. Being Fall there were a number of pumpkin options so I had a thick and rich pumpkin soup and my dining companion had the rich thick goulash soup. Both were incredible. I then went on to the ever ubiquitous Weiner Schnitzel. It was enormous and barely fit the plate. Coming with lemon to squeeze as one likes, it was perfectly made and delicious. The decor is traditional Austrian and cozy, warm. It was an expensive meal but worth it.

Marci R.

Yelp
Classic Vienna experience in a beautiful location! Yes, very touristy, but excellent none the less! Food wonderful, service excellent, atmosphere beautiful! Very happy we went!

Jing C.

Yelp
Opened its door in 1447, Griechenbeisl is the oldest restaurant in Austria with amazing history. Beethoven, Mozart and Mark Twain were among their frequent guests. Request dine in their famous Mark Twain room and admire the past patrons' autographs on the wall.

Shirin P.

Yelp
Liked the decor. Friendly staff, and food arrived fast. Not sure whether this is a touristy place or not we enjoyed the food. Got goulash and Wiener schnitzel.

Lynn T.

Yelp
Definitely one of the pricier places one can eat in Vienna. My two friends and I easily got a reservation on a Tuesday night (only called an hour ahead). The wiener schnitzel is large! Didn't think it was anything special compared to other local restaurants in Vienna. We also ordered the Austrian ravioli (comes with 3 of different flavors). One was tomato flavored, the other pesto, and unsure about the last. We definitely preferred one over the others, would pass on this if you're in the area. Cute place, but would not return for the price.

Mitch W.

Yelp
Just a great time with friends to celebrate two birthdays Loved pork chops and appertizers Good wine and desserts

Lindsay M.

Yelp
The food really was not as good as I was expecting, which was sad. It's a very historic place, but the food and service were not up to expectations. Also, the server was pretty rude and didn't come back once after our dish was served. I recommend trying somewhere else for authentic Austrian food.

Sam S.

Yelp
When Greek and Levantine merchants settled around the middle of the 17th century, the area they inhabited was called the Greek quarter. In this way, the guest house received its present name, Griechenbeisl. It is the oldest guest house in Vienna dating back to the 1400's. I would say this is a tourist restaurant rather than a great Viennese restaurant. It's an old restaurant that is famous due to the fact that Albert Einstein used to eat here, and many famous musicians also used to frequent this place like Strauss and so on. It's got a number of rooms and we were in the round room for dinner. It's a gorgeous old place and the ambience is amazing. For that I would give it 5 stars. The service is also excellent and the staff were very well dressed and very attentive. The food is just ok for me. The fish was overlooked and lacked some taste. There was too much sesame crust for my liking. The soup was also ok and the sachertorte was also ok. The drink choices were ok as well. I would like to come back here and try their normal menu before making up my mind about the food. We had a fixed menu and what we had was well below the level of food I would expect in Vienna.

Alex D.

Yelp
Food was pretty decent here but somehow we spent $120 usd on a few apps, 2 entrees and little alcohol. Had the local fish which was pretty good and the bacon wrapped pork which was delicious. Will say the food and especially the yummy salad is very fresh. Really cute to sit in the outdoor courtyard looking at the lit up ivy covered buildings. Worth the experience if you want to spend a bit more! Busy place, may want reservations.

Tania S.

Yelp
The restaurant atmosphere is unique with different rooms. A must visit ! The menu offers a variety of meals which is good if you are not Into Viennese food. I visited during summer and been in the rooms could be a little warm and almost feel like I wanted to finish and leave. I am sure during spring , fall or winter is more comfortable.

Jessica T.

Yelp
Perfect if you're looking for a casual bite to eat amongst the historic flare. We ate early and were able to enjoy the Mark Twain room. Being a history lover, we spent the majority of our meal staring up at the many names we recognized. We both got the Wiener schnitzel and it was delicious. One thing to be aware of - we did attend on a date night, expecting it to be a bit quieter. But with a family nearby with a loud child and the other rooms being filled with groups, it did get quite loud towards the end of our meal. With that in mind, I'd recommend heading there either early or late if you're looking for a quieter meal. I'd definitely go again, especially if you're just visiting the area.

Lynn C.

Yelp
I'm not gonna lie, my opinion for this restaurant wavered between a 3-star, 2-star, and then finally I settled on the 4-star. But keep in mind that the 4-star is not because of the food, not at all, because the food is barely a 3-star quality, but of the entire experience. First, it must be noted that this restaurant is over FIVE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. This is a quote from their site: "The Griechenbeisl (The Greek Inn) is one of Vienna's oldest inns. Artists, scholars and politicians would congregate in the Griechenbeisl to eat, drink, debate and reflect - often into the early hours. From the world famous balladeer 'Der lieber Augustin' to later figures of the stature of Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, Strauss, Brahms, the painters Waldmüller and Schwind, the opera singer Schaljapin, writers Mark Twain, Grillparzer and Nestroy, and political personalities such as Karl Lueger and Graf Zeppelin have all appreciated itstraditional Viennese cuisine and creature comforts. The framed autographs on the walls of the famous Mark Twain room ensure that their presence lives on here." And yes, they have given their autographs - on the celings and walls of one of the vaulted rooms of the restaurant. That, alone, is worth a little visit, no? Well, I wasn't so sure myself at the beginning, since I am never one to go somewhere because it's ancient. But my boyfriend is, so he dragged me there. The outside of the restaurant is really pretty, so I was already slightly impressed. A little walkway via stone stairs behind the restaurant leads to the Danube river. Nice. As you walk in, you are welcomed by low ceilngs and winding cave-like halls and rooms. Pretty cool. There are framed pictures of the outside of this restaurant from hundred of years ago, and it almost looks exactly the same (see picture). Even cooler. Nevertheless, when we were seated, we were a bit shocked at the brisk, no-nonsense attitude of our server. My bf and I had lunch at 2pm and we came into this restaurant at 5pm (we had to be somewhere at 7pm) so we weren't very hungry. After ordering a glass of wine and a beer, I asked for the beef broth with semolina dumplings and the boiled rump. My boyfriend wanted to have the appetizer salmon. The conversation went as such: "Can i get the salmon?" BF points to the menu The server's reply: "small, cold, appetizer" waits for him to pick something else. We tried to ask him for more information, but he didnt really provide any, and then walked away to give us more time to select from the menu. When he came back, my bf tried to joke with him on whether he could give us three words to describe the perch pike, he said, "warm, not appetizer" with a hint of irritation. So we made our orders. The food was expensive and not very tasty. The soup was bland and the dumpling was a piece of dough that was very sandy for 6EUR. The rump was flavourless and the sauces that accompanied was bland. My boyfriend's pike was actually quite good. Each of the main was about 23EUR. At the end of the meal, we asked for the cheque and another server asked us if wanted to see the autographs, we said yes, and he led us to a room with all the signatures. And then with a giant stick, he tried his best to point out people he thinks we would recognize. He left us there to take pictures. Afterwards, as we were leaving, my boyfriend pointed to a set of staircase leading downwards, and asked where it led to. The server told us it was just the cellar for employees "where the beer bottles go, and wine cellar, and cleaning." As we walked back to our eat to get our coats, the man asked our server to take us downstairs! That was cool Three floors of the oldest part of Vienna! They told us that this restaurant, and the cellar are the only preservations of old vienna (and then he showed us on the map too). After doing a little googling, i did realize that it's pretty normal for this type of service in Vienna and in comparison, these guys are really really great. Love the experience here. If you are a first time visitor, come for at least a drink!

Lourdes L.

Yelp
This place is amazing, it's been around since 1447 and everyone from Mozart to Snoop Dog have dined here, proven by their signatures on a ceiling in one of the rooms. Food is great, wait staff is amazing

Anthony C.

Yelp
I feared a tourist trap and was pleasantly surprised. The interior of the building is a site to behold and the service is professional. Food wise I recommend sticking with the true Austrian dishes, you won't be disappointed.

Amber M.

Yelp
This place definitely has character - from the building, to the servers, to the ambiance. We were very drawn to the old, classic charm they definitely tried to play up. The food was extremely fresh, with that traditional Germanic crudeness in presentation (think potato mash plopped on the plate). We got a seasonal green garlic soup that was flavorful, fish that was super fresh, and the Austrian dumplings that was good though heavy. Service was attentive although slightly a bit intrusive in their curiosity of us being Asian American tourists (we got the "no, where are you really from?" Question when we said we were from this city in the states). Lovely live music playing in the background. I'm sure there's better food in Vienna, but this was certainly memorable and doable when we didn't really do a lot of planning in advance!

Lulu B.

Yelp
The foundation of the place is lovely! Lucky enough to get a table in the Mark Twain room which meant we got to look at all the signatures on the walls. Service wasn't amazing, took a while to get the waiters attention and order our food, but food was pretty good. Would recommend getting the Wiener schnitzel! The place is quite expensive though and the food isn't extraordinary in comparison to other restaurants, I assume because it a popular tourist destination.

Richard O.

Yelp
We showed up pretty late one night--a work partner and I--and were mistaken for a "young couple in love" and boy did we get the treatment! First, I LOVE Weinersnitchel, but in the States it is usually not made from veal, so... The host and hostess there were a very old couple who really took to us for some reason. The Weinersnitchel was hanging off the 12" oval plate, and was super. I was half-way through and the hostess brought me ANOTHER ONE saying that I needed my strength--I must have been drooling over it while I was eating, and we were pretty much the last people in the place, but WOW--and no charge for the second one, which I managed to eat half of--I was much younger then. The composed salad was the same at every restaurant we ate at in Vienna, and was both good and interesting since it was early February and not much fresh produce was around at that time of year. This was quite an experience that I will never forget--and it occurred in 1985. I travelled all over the world for work; the ONLY city I want to revisit is Vienna, and this is the one restaurant I must go to again. Cheers!

Jason N.

Yelp
Entrees were a bit expensive for what they (mid-20s to 30 Euro) were though portions were quite generous. We tried the creamy potato soup (6 Euro), the wild boar filet with creamy cabbage and whole wheat gnocchi (24 Euro), and the cold beef carpaccio appetizer with pumpkin, chestnuts and other toppings. We enjoyed each of our dishes, but they were not examples of inspired cooking or preparation. The boar, cooked medium, was prepared to the perfect degree of redness and was as tender as game can be. The apple strudel with ice cream was delicious--the exterior of the strudel was crispy and flaky. With an aperitif and a glass of Zweigelt, plus a bottle of mineral water, our bill came to 68 Euro before 10% tip. The atmosphere is cozy but a bit brightly lit. We found the dining areas to be split up in smallish rooms with 5-6 tables in each. There are at least a couple pianos with a pianist who roams from room to room to play them. Some of the music was nice, some a bit weird and made us laugh (Star Wars theme at dinner-- really?). The restaurant purports to be 500+ years old and to have been frequented by the likes of Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. There apparently is a wall of signatures that is neat to see, unfortunately, no one informed us of this while were there. Our service was impersonal and slow, but in our experience, par for the course for central Europe. I felt like we were among only tourists, which was a bit of a disappointment but not surprising given that it was in our guidebook. We supposed this would be the case even before we went but wanted to check it off our list nonetheless. All in all, this was not a disappointing experience, but not a particularly memorable one, either.

George B.

Yelp
Chef tries too hard and the service staff doesn't try at all. I had the beef carpaccio. The meat was some of the best I've ever had but there was so much garnish on it that it overwhelmed the taste. But my major problem was the waitstaff. We would ask questions and the waiter would answer is like we were stupid. In this really condescending tone. And he obviously spoke English but refused to speak it to us. Which I wouldn't normally object to, because it's their country, but this is a touristy restaurant and 99% of the people in there were speaking English, including the elderly Japanese couple and what sounded like some bratty French euro trash. Eat it, dude. Also, one member of our party had a Russian accent. They gave her a Russian menu even though she was fluent in English, and the Russian menu had a price for a glass of wine that was €1.75 cheaper than it was supposed to be. Rather than just eating the €1.75, the waiter told her basically to go f*ck herself in German (little did they know another member of our party spoke German), and told us (in English which he suddenly spoke) to call the number on the back of some brochure if she had a complaint. Finally they relented when a manager came over, argued some more, and decided it wasn't worth the hassle. This place is overrated, coasting by on the fact that it's really old, and unduly pretentious and hostile for a restaurant that depends on tourists for its business.

Supakij K.

Yelp
Authentic Austrian food in the middle of the city with more than hundred years atmosphere. The waiter is friendly and helpful. Local draft beer is so good. Food taste good and ingredients are fresh. Reservation in advance is recommend.

Inga K.

Yelp
We traveled to Europe with a large group containing multiple families. This spot was a main destination in the plan to celebrate the birthday of one of our party. They were great about the advance reservation and helping with birthday surprise plans. When we arrived they had small foil birthday confetti all over a specially set table. The food is pricey and is ok. It isn't about that, it is about being in a 550 year old spot and having some fun. The waiters were a howl, and when they brought the cake with a giant firecracker thing on it, the whole place got engaged in the fun. They had a lovely accordion player in the room, and never left us unattended. We brought 6 kids with us and they were treated so well, and not with some of the disdain we have seen where it was assumed in advance that the kids would be misbehaved. Personally, I loved the character and sense of fun and boldness of their serving staff. The food was really nice, and plentiful. This is Austria in a nutshell, a lot of food, a sense of fun and a bit of tongue in cheek. We really appreciated the quick tour of all the famous signatures on the ceiling of the one dining room. They could serve Kraft Dinner and still be cooler than most other places.

Yelp
I didn't head to Griechenbeisl expecting to find good food there. I didn't even go expecting to find decent food there. In fact, I didn't go for the food at all, but just so I could say I ate in a restaurant that had been around since 1447, So when we dropped by on New Year's Day hoping we could grab a table for our final sit-down meal in Vienna, I was expecting a place that would feel more like a kitschy touristy Disneyland idea of Austria than the real thing, offering so-so food, because with the draw of a history like that, I figured they didn't really need to do any better to draw them in. So I was surprised when restaurant interior felt real (albeit maze-like), and the food was actually good. I went for the Austrian standards -- goulash for an appetizer, weiner schnitzel for the maim course, and apple strudel for dessert. My wife ordered the thin-sliced roasted sirloin with fried onions and pan-roasted potatoes, with two kinds of chocolate-mousse for dessert. While none of the dishes were so mind-blowingly amazing that I felt, "man, I've just _got_ to get back _there_," which is how I felt about Huth and Steirereck, the food was competently prepared, and not at all disappointing. (Hope that doesn't sound as if I'm damning with faint praise. Believe me, if I had issues with the food, you'd know about it.) The service was friendly, and I enjoyed taking a look at the room filled with autographs of earlier visitors such as Mark Twain and Mozart. Strangely, they didn't ask me to sign their wall ... ;-) Worth visiting once to be able to say you'd been there, and to admire those signatures.

Yelp
I came in here rather late to enjoy a nice soup, some bread and many-a-beer. Everything I had was delicious, if a little expensive, but I guess this is Vienna and I should expect everything to be overpriced. At least the soup was in a big portion, and the bartender was prompt (though a little rude and snippity) in getting me more beers. Lots of couples on dates here and groups of 2-3 young men sitting around the bar and chatting. I sat at the bar and read a magazine and really enjoyed the people-watching. Oh, this was a little before Christmas, and part of the reason I chose this place was that it had the best Christmas decorations in the area with cute little lights everywhere and just a charming and homey atmosphere. Very pretty in the snow and very cute inside looking out the little windows at the lights and the snow. It is on a very quiet street too, which is another plus - some of the other cute-looking cafes around here were loud and jam-packed and that took away from the atmosphere a little bit.

Yelp
Very much enjoyed this little restaurant in Vienna. It was our first night here and we were strolling while looking for something authentically Austrian. We ate inside which was a little crowded and tight but ok as everything was taken outside. Service was good, relatively speedy and attentive. Excellent beer choices. Everyone enjoyed their meals especially the two had schnitzel...I had the veal and it was delicious. The charming gentlemen who provided music was wonderful and sweet. I asked him to play some Beatles and had no problem showing off his chops All My Lovin! Overall very good experience and strongly recommend.

Yelp
We are admirers to this location / restaurant / historical background. We are tourists but we are not stupid any bit to the waiter of our table, to whom tried to be sophisticated on us, as if we don't know how to order our lamb chops medium rare. We ordered 2 glasses of wine but this person served us half bottle fitted in two craft containers. The cost of difference may not be vast but we were over-sold! In the end this waiter asked for tip! Ok, I had enough of this sophistication and told him"we will leave some cash, a tip we think you deserve, I have to say you are a very good sales man". This establishment is show three euro signs on yelp, food is pretty much standard, and maybe they don't need to worry about the on coming patrons by keep on going like this.

Yelp
Probably one of the best restaurants in the old Vienna, an amazing place a friend discovered to me, and that I'll repeat soon!

Yelp
A good, but touristy spot. Go because it's an awesome historic spot and to see the signature wall that includes Mozart's autograph. Don't go because you're expecting a delicious meal.

Yelp
Wow! We just had dinner here tonight. This place is old as in 1508. The service was excellent. We had wine a beer and the Sea Bass special as well as the Flank Steak. Both were delicious. The deserts were incredible, the apricot ice cream and the Apple Strudel both were amazing. The apples were so thinly sliced that they almost melted in my mouth. This is a great place to visit in Vienna, Austria. The photos on the wall depict many famous people visiting here. Great location!

Yelp
The only thing counting in this restaurants favour is the deep entrenched history. Food and drink is hopelessly overpriced, and while the food portion sizes are generous, it's taste is not worth the price.

Yelp
I was shopping with my girlfriend and slowly but steady we became hungry and we started to look for a restaurant. So we found the Griechenbeisl with a nice possibility to sit outside. Unfortunately this was the only positive impression this Restraurant gave me. Food: I ate the "Stelze" and it was super dry. As an Austrian I really ate a lot of Stelzen but this was worst I ate so far. One star. Service: Unbelievable. As I aready mentioned we were sitting outside and suddenly it started to rain. Every other guest was asked to move to the inside except of us. We asked 2 times if we also should move but we were always told to stay. We had to explain three times that we also ordered food and that we will stay a bit longer than just a drink. Finally we convinced the personal that we want to eat inside....and we had to carry everything on our own. We then wanted to go to the room everyone was moving to but we were then placed in some other room in some corner next to the kitchen. Maybe they thought we were not "good" enough but just a hint: never rate a book by its cover. 1 star. Price: Way too expensive. I ragularely eat at "Haubenrestaurants" which have the same price but much bettet quality. 1 star. Overall: I will never go there again and for every tourist: there are much better places in Vienna than this one.

Yelp
The only reason to go there is for the ambiance and the historic site. The place is really cosy and you feel like you went back in time after entering the restaurant. We went there for lunch but I have to say I was one of the most disappointing meals in a long time. We had the Gulasch and the Hirschragout. Both of them were way too salty and the Gulasch meat was extremely hard. Even though we were hungry we didn't finish our plates. Also the prices are very expensive. The Hirschragout was around 25 Eur, you can get way better food for that price in a lot of other places close by. The service was also mixed, we had 3 different waiters, one was really nice, but one didn't even care about us. When he saw that left half of the plate and made a comment on that it was way to salty and hard he just replied that other customer like it as it is and we don't know what we are talking about. Obviously we didn't leave a tip. Surely never go back there...

Yelp
A fantastic, historic restaurant ruined by an entire room of football hooligans screaming at the top of their lungs. Encouraged by the staff to stay rowdy, it ruined the atmosphere. If I didn't enjoy it, I can't imagine what the octagenarian table next to me was thinking.

Yelp
You should really stop by there for dinner when in Vienna. Waiter was absolutely fantastic. Old school! Loved it! Food was excellent. Probably the best Leberknödel-Soup I ever had in my life! The restaurant itself is really nice & cozy. Amazing history in this building, since it's the oldest restaurant in Vienna. Also to add to the charm of this place, an old guy was playing the Zither in the restaurant which was simply lovely. Will definitely go back

Yelp
Classical Viennese food, except perhaps I wished I'd stuck to that. A bit pricy. Lovely terrace. A shouting head waiter, always entertaining. Cannon balls and local legends.
