Great Notion Brewing - NW28th

I was visiting Portland and looked up different breweries and located this one. Seems a little "out the way," but let me tell you, def worth it. The staff was delightful/helpful when picking what to drink. I tried all the sours, the stout and an oktoberfest type of believe, boy oh boy they were all soooo delicious!!! I regret not buying beer to go. Yes, they have that on hand. Anyway, if you enjoy beer, this is a must! Stop by, enjoy the vibe, the beer, and the staff. Cheers!

A modern and clean establishment tucked into the NW industrial area. A great selection of beer is available. The wait team is super friendly and accommodating. You can order food via a kiosk in the restaurant for Pizza Thief, who resides in the same building. They had Sicilian pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and fries to choose from. And even though Great Notion is not responsible for the food, they still checked on us to make sure it was good and that we had what we needed.

Had a great lunch by Pizza Thief. Salad and Madison were great bartenders and local guides. Beers were top-notch, from the Boo Berry sour to the IPAs to the bourbon aged double stack stout. Must visit for beer enthusiasts visiting Portland.

This brewery is in more of an industrial area and a little far from other areas, but worth the visit. The selection of beers on draft is a lot wider than other breweries. I enjoyed a sour and fresh hop beer. Both were amazing! The interior shows you the production area at a glimpse and had a comforting wood aroma. All of that gets paired wirh great customer service for a great time.

This is a nice location. The service was kind of slow because there was only one person working. The place was clean and and beers were cold. Men's restroom needed some attention, but as mentioned, there was only one person working there, it seemed. It did get kind of echoey when people were talking, so maybe something to combat that would be nice.

Beer quality and taste is down. Kitchen is closed. QR codes are gone from the table. Innovation is missing from past days. Prices are up. Can art is up? Feels like great notion has checked out. This was my favorite brewery for probably 6 or 7 years I find myself wondering why I keep coming back at this point. The ambiance is always nice but, stuff if just getting weird with the way they do things since 2020 or so. Response to owner comments: I bet my wife (who also previously loved great notion as much as I did) that "the lead guitarist left or something" I see you changed lead brewers in mid 2019, and 2020 is when I started questioning what went wrong (six months of barrel aging and fermenting later) you need to get the original brewer back. You guys are making your money but I'm telling you as a regular follower for the last ten years... That was where you went wrong. Get your guy back. The BBA beers are disgusting these days. That peppermint one last year tasted like mouthwash. Come play with us tasted like spent coffee grounds and improperly fermented maple syrup. Is what it is that's the truth. I wanna love you guys again, get the person who made the beer that made you famous back.

Well this place certainly lived up to the hype. Visiting Portland from the UK this place was my number one Brewery to head to and boy am I glad I did. Enjoyed the location and the setting of the Brewery, staff were extremely friendly also. The beer was just superb, especially the sours they were excellent. Plenty of choice of different types of beers to please everyone with a high standard. Food available was also insane the Garlic pizza bread with Jalapeños and marinara sauce was 👌top Brewery visit.

Amazing everytime! Their menu has changed since last time, so we do miss the Mac and Cheese. With that said, everything is incredible and A+ quality. The beer selection is so delicious, always fun to get a flight because it's hard to pick just one.

I was in for a surprise with the seasonal draft menu. I really enjoyed the queen of fruits, which was a tarty ale brewed with loads of tropical passionfruit, mango, and mangosteen. I loved the sourness and fragrance of the fruits. I also ordered the blueberry muffin smoothie, which is a fan favorite. Cans are available in store too. There's a pizza parlor called pizza thief with vegan and gluten free options. Very crispy dough. The vegan special was worth it for $22 with all the greens that you can consume in one meal. Fries ($8) were crispy, but I wouldn't order the fries again because I thought it was pricey for regular fries. Dog friendly patio too!

If I could design the perfect brewery, Great Notion Brewing would be it. I'm not your typical beer drinker--smoothie sours are my thing, and this place delivered like no other. I've never had such a wide selection of smoothie sours in my life, and each one was a jam-packed, juicy experience that took me on a flavor voyage. Every sip was an explosion of rich, fruity flavors. The jammy texture and boldness of the sours were exactly what I was hoping for, and each beer brought something unique to the table. It wasn't just drinking beer--it was like experiencing dessert in a glass, but with the complexity and depth of expertly crafted brews. Great Notion absolutely nailed the balance of sweetness, tartness, and body. Their variety of smoothie sours made it feel like a beer-tasting adventure, where each option was more delightful than the last. For someone who usually finds typical beers a bit uninteresting, this brewery has made me want to come back for more, again and again. If you're into fruit-forward, bold, and creative beers that push the boundaries of what beer can be, Great Notion Brewing is a must-visit. It's a dream come true for smoothie sour lovers, and even for those who don't typically enjoy beer--this place just might change your mind.

The beers here are really different and delicious. We tried their award winning New England IPAs and couple lagers. They also serve pizza and the place is spacious enough for larger groups and families. We ended up buying a pack of beer to go.

We went to Portal for a weekend trip, and Great Notion was definitely on our list, we enjoy craft beer, and some of our hometown tap rooms serve their beer, and when we got here we discovered so many other ones that we didn't even know they made!!! It was an awesome experience, the people at the bar are great and friendly, the vibes are super chill, they sell really good pizza, I definitely recommend the jalapeno cheese flatbread!! And the meatballs!! Superb! We will definitely come back when in Portland!!

Great beers. The pizza was one of the worst I have had. Bummer since the food at the other locations has been great.

New location for me. Now I've been to all three locations. Food options are different from the rest as they focus on pizza aspect. Service was great as usual. I dug the artwork at this spot. If you enjoy Great Notion. This spot is your industrial vibe.

Moved here fairly recently and this was our first brewery we went to in Portland. It didn't disappoint. Beers were on point! The staff was so kind and accommodating. Loved the beers so much, we had to bring some back to family in SoCal to try. They loved it too!

Great service, delicious beers, food on point, love this place. We got a flight of 5 beers, Blueberry cheesecake, Easy Like Sunday Morning, Luminous Pi, Triple Strawberry Marshmallow Shake, Return to Space IPA. Food ordered was the Crunchwrap, BanMi, Kale Salads. The Crunchwrap was great, just a little oily for me from the pulled pork, but I would love to try it w/the vegan option. Good portions. Fries crispy, seasoned well. Salad tasty and filling. Definitely a great place to check out, clean, open, chill. Staff was super friendly, had a wonderful time.

We just made a quick stopover at this brewery! My family, who are local, said this place is super popular by the locals! As the local appreciate the new releases from the brewery! The brewery offers a long list of beers, sours (including a blueberry sour) and a couple ciders! Plus there are some non alcoholic drinks for designated drivers or under age drinkers! The brewery also provides a food menu! We just stopped in for drinks thus I am unsure how the food taste! The menu did look good and diverse! The ambiance was very nice! Big open space with tables and bar seating! We were at the brewery during an ice storm thus very quiet! I imagine the place to get quite busy! The staff was very friendly and welcoming! We received good service!

I would bring out of town guests here to show off their quality microbrews & represent Portland. Portland, Oregon is a town known for a good microbrews & good food. I enjoyed their pub style food: fries with pulled pork on top of it. Flavorful food that is contending in the pub food arena. Keep in mind some of the flavorful food might compete against the beer on your palette. So I like to get a taste of the beer before the food arrives. My focus is on the superior beers: Quality taste with different fanciful varietals. For Portland beers I would definitely bring an out of town guest here. People from California come all the way in to try these beers. Beer lovers come this way! It's a great idea: a great notion. The service was prompt and polite. The parking is outdoor with surrounding warehouses. The parking lot makes you feel like you're a little out-of-the-way, but I think that adds to the experience. Indoors you have view of the brewery.

Love!! They actually had 3 choices of dark beer. My husband and I both had the Otter Milk Stout. Very good. Pizza Thief our favorite place is now serving there. What a great combo. We were greeted and were able to select our own table. The atmosphere was open, clean. We ordered our drinks from the bar and then ordered our food from a kiosk. Very simple to use. Our food came out within minutes. Very happy with beer and food. We ordered the large Kale Salad to serve 2, an order of Jalapeño Cheese Bread, a Sicilian Square Pizza ( can feed 4, so I took home leftovers!! ) Yum. Later my husband wanted something sweet and we shared The Hazelnut Chocolate Ice cream that was homemade. Fabulous!!! Go try Great Notion Brewery and have a bite from Pizza Thief!!

First time visit! I traveled from a hotel by bus and the GPS is a little weird but finally found it behind other warehouses! Once you're inside, it is absolutely beautiful and bright. I saw there was a food menu but I only drank beer. I sat at the bar and everyone was so nice and super quick to help. You can order full pour, half pour, or five oz tasters. I ordered a flight of five sours. The sours are very good! I also love the flight box. I've never seen an easier way to carry a flight back to your table. In order, I tried Blueberry Muffin, Blueberry Muffin Fruit in the Can, Evil Red, Possessed, Queen of Fruits. My absolute favorite was Blueberry Muffin Fruit in the Can. I'm a big fan of smoothie sours and this one is very thick and flavorful. Overall, absolute great place to visit and can't wait to come back!

As far as the brewery goes, this is one of my favorite breweries in town for the variety of beer and the delicious sours they offer! I love the atmosphere here and love going to trivia here. They recently switched their food to pizza thief which was a little disappointing because their old food menu was amazing but pizza thief is also very good. They also used to let you order from the table and bring it to you and now you have to go to the bar to order drinks and then to a separate kiosk to order food. Not a huge deal but a little inconvenient when you're trying to hang out with friends and play trivia. Overall though, the beer options are so good I will keep coming back!

BEST BREWERY FOR HAZY IPA OR SOUR DRINKERS! I'm going to keep this review short n' simple. Great Notion Brewing is a Superman, Dumbledore and Gandalf of the brewing world. You should go and experience their power, magic and wisdom!

I'm an uber fan of Great Notion and their pastry style beers. We go to their tap rooms in both locations of Seattle; Ballard and Georgetown. We were in Portland so we had to hit them up here too. Still my favorite brewery and it was fun to see their newest taproom and brewing warehouse!

This is our go-to for a beer and a bite. The hazy IPAs and the stout are favorites but they have some fun sours. The Pizza Thief pizza and salads served at this location are what keep us coming back. Tonight we had a chorizo and cauliflower pizza that was out of this world. The focaccia like perfectly cheesy crusty crust is so delicious. The vegan broccolini and mushroom pizza (we added cheese because we are nog vegans) was also packed with flavor. So happy right now....

Heard great things about their sour beer, so had to to give it a shot while I was in town. Came with some friends who aren't a huge fan of engaging with staff, so their use of a QR code was fantastic! At this (flagship?) location, it is a fairy small tasting room, although the menu for the beer and kitchen was quite satisfactory in terms of options. They were out of the blueberry muffin beer that I was excited about, but I did get three tastings of other beers and tried the burger as well. Be aware that the burger patties are very thin, although decent in flavor (a bit overdone, but they are thin). I really liked the fried fries (calorie bomb alert though). The sour beers were.... Decent. However, I'm a huge fan of "make your face pucker" sours and these did not. So, if you like a light sour, you'll enjoy. Otherwise, be aware these are not that strong. Overall, good, 4* for sure, but not knock my socks off amazing.

Very nice establishment in Portland. Gorgeous burnt wood walls and a seamless ordering experience. Food comes out promptly and the servers were kind!

This was my first visit to this location. Its a really cool spot and I believe where they do the actual brewing. The spot is beautiful. The location is classic industrial. The beer is still amazing. If you like great notion its worth a visit to see where the magic is made. They have food, but I did not try. I would of course recommend.

Great space so much fun and a great space including the outside patio space. The food smells amazing but of course come for the stuff on tap it's beautiful and tasty! Something for everyone in my party. Staff is helpful and fun service is exceptional. Had a great time!

Man, I'm in Portland frequently and I love this place man. This is my favorite German food restaurant on the entire west coast to be honest. Had a birthday party for my girlfriend who is now my wife, but when she was just dating me, we had a birthday party here and I knew guys from around the area so it like 20 people showed up and then she knew people so that maybe we probably got crowded about 30 people and they were totally cool with us. We came in there and rock the Casbah that's for sure beer brew. don't even pick up beer. Just have them pick it for you man. Trust me going back again again and again be there on Friday night next week. It's kind of my Friday night place in Portland now / a lot of women look like the real Saint Pauli Girls that are customers

I have a new favorite beer spot in Portland! It used to be Cascade for sours but Great Notion outshined them. All the beers we had were stellar with blueberry muffin taking the... cake. The food is also excellent - at least the pork belly banh mi. Ordering was easy through the toast app. Big windows and an open space make for a cozy but noisy atmosphere. One of the staff was a Michigan football fan so they had the UofM vs Perdue game on, which was unexpected extra plus points for my partner. We'll be back!

Once again, a fabulous trip to one of my favorite breweries in Portland. Plenty of indoor seating and some outdoor seating. Some TVs for sports. It is kid friendly with kids menu and beverages. Order by QR code which I love, easy and quick and you can always keep the beers coming.! The beers are fantastic and innovative. Constantly rotating and plenty of options. May I recommend a hazy or a smoothie ale. The food is delicious. Plenty of appetizers, salads and entrees. The fried chicken sandwich frequently has variations but always is a go to. Ambiance is that of a typical brewery. Plenty of space for everyone. Thanks for another great evening Great Notion.

All about the food, 4 stars. I shared a vegan burger with a garden salad, pretzel, and a flight of beer. The flights were Riesling raddler, big papaya, pig frog, lemon glow up, and seedless. I would say the Riesling raddler and seedless were my fav (bright, sour and / or sweet flavor profile, and I was nicely surprised about the lemon glow up.

Beware doing business with this company, particularly for a monthly subscription. When you sign up, there is no way to cancel the subscription online (although you can certainly sign up online and give them your billing info really easily) and reaching out by email, phone or in person is an excercise in futility. The tend to respond to emails a week or so later, if they respond at all, and no one at the physical locations can help and just hand you a card with a phone number and email on it. I was billed for more than a year of subscription boxes that were never picked up and they are refusing to either provide me with the beer (the original boxes have already been sold or not available) or a credit for the amount towards other beer. They are just trying to tell me I am SOL Seems like they don't understand consumer laws around actually delivering a product that they have sold. Unfortunately I will be escalating this to a filing with the better business bureau and or small claims court. Super silly, i would be happy with just getting the beer i paid for which seems like a really simple ask.

I love great notion! I love getting a beer flight, they change their beers up often enough that it always feels like fresh choices. I'm a big fan of their fruit in a can but don't know if I want to drink an entire pint of it. So the tiny beers are great! The food is amazing! The vibe is perfect. And they have trivia night that's a lot of fun.

I'll start this out by admitting I'm not a beer drinker or a beer fan in general. But my friends told me that Great Notion was the place to get introduced to fruity-beers. But if I'm being honest, the thing that won me over wasn't the beer at all. It was the Crunchwrap Extreme! That is some good eats. Cheesy goodness, crunchy tortillas, and tender pork. And the spiced crema? game over. Overall, I really liked this place! Some of the sweet beers were better than the others, but our group didn't have a problem finishing the flight.

Huge list of Different beers! Haven't tried the food but it's looks delicious Staff is always so friendly! Love when they open everything up for the warm weather! We like to sit and watch all the cars drive by while having a beer lol

The area is kinda sketchy but it's worth it. Down the hill from the adidas employee store is another great notion location on 28th. I don't have to sell you great notion the beers will do that for you. Best tart beers in town honestly they can't be touched. The food is amazing as well try the chicken bacon ranch fries and the smash burger. Awesome service as Always at any location.

Was a had to go to place in Portland. Got the beer flight. Everything was good. Bartenders were welcoming and fun to be around and the atmosphere was great.

We are visiting Oregon from Las Vegas for the rest of this month and we stopped by Great Notion straight from the airport to grab a bite to eat and have a few beers. I was looking forward to getting my hands on real food after a 2 hour long plane ride. This brewery is located in a tiny business industrial park area. It's also a restaurant, so when you walk in you will have to wait for someone to guide you to your table. They also have an outdoor patio, which is very nice during the summer in Oregon. I really wanted to give them five stars, but unfortunately I had to give them a four. :( It looked like they were very understaffed because while it wasn't too busy when we were there, it took a very long time to get our beer flights and our food. Our server also gave us the wrong beer flight, when we told him about it, he corrected the problem and we got our correct flight. Our beer flight consisted of the following; peach and cream shake, strawberry shortcake, blueberry muffin, big papaya, and purple people eater. I liked them all but I think my favorites were the purple people eater and the strawberry shortcake. My boyfriend loved the strawberry shortcake beer so much that he requested a 4 pack to take with him. For food, I had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich and my boyfriend had a chicken sandwich, both served with fries. The BBQ pulled pork sandwich was very tender and had a lot of taste to it. My boyfriend liked his chicken sandwich as well. We'll definitely come back to Great Notion again next time we're in Portland. Great beer, great food, great service.

I've been wanting to go to this location for awhile now. When we got there we weren't entirely sure that we were in the right place. It's kind of an odd location, but no fears, you have made it! It is a big warehouse looking building, all of the cars in front give it away though. I loved the inside area, great sized bar and fun murals and artwork. We both ordered some food and a beer. They have a great selection of beer, especially sours, and I love sours! You order on your phone after scanning the barcode on the table. We ordered the Banj Mi sandwich and the loaded fries. Both we're very good, the chicken on the fries was a little overdone, but Banh Mi had great flavor. We ordered the Bloop sour beer and the Star Sower IPA, both a thumbs up. We definitely want to come back again, we had a great experience, and the staff was fast and friendly!

Omg the fruited sour beers here are crazy good. I always go with the taster tray cause I can't make up my mind. The food here was pretty good too. I got the bacon chicken ranch fries and was completely satisfied. Left with a bunch of 4-pack beers and some swag!

They have flights! Chose this to get a taste in their wide Tap selection. Great place! When I first walked up to the building, NGL, was a bit confused if they were even open with not much to go off of on their REFLECTIVE windows (thankfully, no1 was in the front inside watching me look bewildered‍!) Went in and was happy that they allow dogs inside (I was prepared to sit outside with 3 sweaters on) so Neko and I HAPPILY plopped ourselves at the bar top and scanned their 2-sided menu of delicious sounding beers. IPAs, Sours, Porters and a few pilsners. Service was perfect. He picked up on me wanting everything so he suggested the flight (didn't see flight offered on menu), so went with that and glad I did (: their IPAs are solid, especially enjoyed their cryo hopped IPA(Ripe IPA), like a hazy in color and citrus profile but def. Had a more bitter/hop part to it, which was fantastic. And I found out while sitting there that a Berkeley location recently opened up, so will pay a visit when I'm back in the Bay

Wowzer y'all Dayuuuum good vibe, staff are on point, friendly, accommodating and super knowledgeable with everything beer!!! Three locations to choose from and a great wide variety of goodies!! One must try but not for all might be the Blueberry muffin but my personal favorite was the double stout coffee. A definite must try's and don't sleep in the libations....Great little tasting menu of bar goodies!!!

I came here for the first time in a while today for lunch. As usual, the beer here is terrific. Really delicious. The space is great too, light, airy, and spacious. The food, however, was very disappointing. I had a crunch wrap, which was pretty good, but paired with the watermelon salad, was $21. Pretty steep, and the watermelon salad was super bland. Others had a spicy fried chicken sandwich. Bone dry, zero seasoning. Another had the pretzel pizza. Bone dry, hard pretzel. Bland again. The fries were great though. So, I guess the move here is to get beer and French fries.

I've never been to Great Notion before, so it was a blast to spend a few hours at their NW location this week. The space is a breath of fresh air in the mostly industrial region, with the charred wood interior that you enter into being the most stunning in my eyes. I love how large the bar is here, and allowing visitors to peer through the glass into the massive beer production facilities is a nice touch there. The beer menu is well designed, and very simple. I enjoyed several beers on tap - of course tastings - and settled on the Guava sour being my favourite. Since this was one of the first times where I had not being paying attention to the time, I can say that I was blown away at how nice of a time we had. Can't wait to return and to also try some of their food.

Ugh... we LOVE great notion... their food is amazing... the sours and beers are even better!!! I was a little thrown off when we were charged an automatic 20% for 4 adults, 2 kids under 5, and an infant. When I asked about it the person said, "well we're you a group of 6 or more?" I said... there were 4 adults... I've never had kids count towards a party total (we didn't each order a meal... we got some food (3 items) after the zoo to hold us over until dinner)... and the response was, "thanks!"... I have no problem tipping for great service... but you have to order through the app... nobody checks to see how food is going... you fill up your own water... plus it wasn't explicitly stated anywhere about automatic gratuity... and the app that you order through automatically adds an ADDITIONAL 20% for the service. I'm just a little disappointed because when you're spending $8+ for a beer you would just expect a little more... especially if there's an automatic 20% gratuity added. So all in all, just ensure you're reading the entirety of your toast tab because it gets a little confusing. Small children count towards the party total.

Finally.. great notion brewery in Portland!!! All I have to say is... All the staff here are super friendly and easy to talk to

It was a brewed awakening when I realized that Great Notion was right across the corner from us and we had never visited . A bunch of people from my Hubby`s office decided to have a pre-celebration before an office event here and I was glad we discovered this place because its so good . . The space is huge and they were even able to seat a big party like ours on just one table . They have QR codes that you can order through which I really appreciated as it's a hassle to order and settle the bill with such a big group . I am not a really big beer drinker however do enjoy them now and then . I loved their IPAs which generally are not my jam as well as the fruity beers . Multiple rounds were ordered and passed around . Thanks to the QR code ,everyone gets to order through their app and you settle the bill right then but it also gets little challenging when you have to order multiple times. The food was typical American food with Nachos , pretzels , Fries and burgers taking center stage with a few salads . There was also flexibility to add sides specially for people who did not want a whole meal .

Came here for an event, but was super hungry so I ordered the Crunchwrap supreme with pulled pork, lime crema, and cabbage slaw. Gas. Fries were 11/10, beer battered I think. It was basically a loaded quesadilla crusted with cheese, and was SO GOOD. Maybe it's just me, but the 2nd half tasted better a couple hours later in when I came down for a midnight snack.

Always rotating the beers on tap with new and exciting flavors. The food is great also. Has indoor and outdoor seating, large screen tv and board games you can play. Nice addition to slabtown and one of the few options for great food in the neighborhood.

Went here on a Friday night in May and was pleasantly surprised by their diverse beer menu. I'm a cider fan so I enjoyed the sour beers a lot and shared a flight with my boyfriend while we munched on the carne asada fries. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars is because the brewery closed the kitchen at 8:30 pm on a Friday night. Seems way too early for me. Overall loved the ambiance, very much so Portland vibes.

Really delicious and unique beers. The PB and Jammy pants is a must try. I was able to visit the actually brewery and this was my fave.

Great experience coming here. Tried a tasting flight of exceptional Hazy Ales, which they are famous for bringing out West, There were also some creative and unique fruit flavors and sours as well. It's worth the extra drive to the industrial area of NW to see the brewing tanks and the meet some of the craftspeople who work hard to brew the best beers in the Northwest!

This is one of my favorite great notion spots in portland. They have a great beer selection along with food. I usually go for a flight just to try their beers. If you are a fan of cheese whiz, this is your spot they use their house made whiz with their fries.

If you enjoy fruit and sours this is your place, the Papaya-something was a winner. The server was nice and fast. The inside atmosphere, meh, but I like the out of the way location. The negative: the QR code ordering process sucks. Of course, a suggested 18% tip is front and center on the bill. Hopefully, this no-touch trend will abate. And spare me the COVID rhetoric as many breweries and bars were already going to an automated style of service, but yet expecting that gratuity. Didn't try the food. This place feels more three star, but I really liked the sours.

I live in Denver and, when I was planning my visit to Portland, had Great Notion circled as my number one brewery to visit on my trip. I had very high hopes and expectations! They have the type of beers I'm into (big hazy ipas and sours) and I was really looking forward to it. The beer was fantastic. Some of my favorite that I've ever had! The food was also very tasty. The issue on my visit was when the check came. Like I said, I was really looking forward to visiting Great Notion so, before I came, I picked out a few excellent beers from Denver breweries and brought them along on my trip. I gave the bartender a 4 pack so the staff could enjoy some beers from Denver! There was no discount given. Honestly, I expected one. I know that you shouldn't give a gift with any expectations in mind but I did. I gave them a 4 pack (2 IPAs and 2 Pilsners) that cost me about $20. I thought they would at least offer me ONE free beer. Just good business in my opinion. But everything was full price. I would probably go back since the beer was very good but I was just a little disappointed.
