Gothenburg Museum of Art

Awesome art museum, great for rainy days! Really enjoyed how they laid everything out, contrasting both classical and modern art. The current temporary exhibit is incredible - fantastic setup. Can probably get through everything if you’re going fast in about 2 hours.

You could easily spend most of the day here exploring and examining all the museum has to offer, not least of which are the Picassos. When we visited (Aug '24) there were two special exhibitions going on - the art of Ilon Wikland and the photography of Anders Petersen, both of which were fascinating. The ticket prices were also very good value at around £6.

Done a visit here after 14 years... still great place to visit.... Rubens, Rembrandt, Cranach, Munch, Zurbaran, Picasso, etc. are just some of the best artists that have here. Not to mention other local Swedish artist. And the entry is just 70 kronas per person.

MONET! MUNCH! PICASSO! REMBRANDT! Would 100% recommend visiting the Gothenburg museum of art whilst in the area. We had no idea there was art here created by the masters - why doesn't the museum promote this a bit more? It's cheap! An adult ticket only costs around €5, and if you have a valid student card, it's FREE! Plenty to see, from modern art to classics. There was a great installation featuring the work by Ilon Wikland, which ended up being one of the highlights of our visit. Being from Ireland, we had no idea of her work, but we're so glad to have learnt about her art, her life and the contribution of her art to many novels. Go and spend a couple of hours here, you won't regret it :)

Beautiful space with a wonderful and diverse world of art inside. I happen to arrive in the city on free museum day which, of course, added to the greatness of the experience. I would definitely return and it's worth paying for. It was wildly busy when I was there but you still have space to view and discuss the artwork. You didn't feel rushed or too crowded.

Lots of great pieces contained within this museum including many by old masters. Very nice to see the Swedish contributions to the art scene here. The layout is very well considered and everything flows together nicely. Being there on a quiet weekday is perfect to have enough time with every piece.

Spread across about 6 floors. Top floor is my favourite the more modern Swedish and Scandinavian collection. Also has some nice French Impressionism works and a great Van Gogh too and an interesting video on the research that has been done on how it was painted. Nice shop. Got there at 11am when it opened no real queue.

Gothenburg Museum of Art punches above its weight (city size) in many ways. It has a strong collection of highly-respected and popular artists (Monet, Gauguin, Picasso, Munch, etc). Some are variations I hadn't seen elsewhere, such as Gothenburg's variation from Monet's series on water lilies. This gallery also has one of the earliest versions of Munch's Vampyren (1893). This gallery also fed my need to view works of artists who are new to me. One is Metzinger's Two Women (or Two Nudes). I was also struck by how Helmer Osslund's Autumn Evening (1924) and Henrik Sorenen's Midsummer in Telemarken (1917) apply styles akin to Canada's Group of Seven who painted around the same time. The regular collection was more than expected, but the gallery provided further delight with a special exhibition of Ilon Wikland. Neither I nor my partner knew anything about her (sorry!) until now, but became fully absorbed by her style and life experiences. Wikland's images truly capture fairy tales.
