Gostilna na Gradu

An excellent restaurant! The staff’s welcome was warm and friendly. The restaurant’s ambiance was outstanding—if you have the chance, choose a table with a view of the castle courtyard, which is enclosed in glass. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised; each dish was presented to us in detail, and every single one was excellent (I highly recommend the young venison loin—it was truly exceptional). We will definitely return many times, and from now on, this restaurant is on our list of favorite spots for a date night.

Good food and great vibe. Waitress is very friendly, introducing every dish. Wine pairing is amazing, they choose local Slovenian wine, tasty and give the food great combination.

Wasn't expecting much considering that touristy restaurants have a tendency to disappoint but this place exceeded any and all expectations! The price was very reasonable, the staff very nice, and the food was top shelf! The trout was incredible and I highly recommend it.

I have been traveling across Croatia, BiH and Slovenia for the past 12 days and this is the only restaurant that I did not tip and hands down the worst restaurant on the trip so far. I do not know how I can trust the Michelin Guide after this. Food The soups were fine, but the main courses (trout and white fish) were so salty that we couldn’t even taste the fish. Perhaps they cured the fish (which is unlikely, because they said it’s fresh fish), but cured or not, the dish was so overwhelmingly salty that it felt like I was licking some salt. The fried chicken drumsticks were ok, but TBH if fried chicken legs are the only thing you can do well you need to reflect as a restaurant. My thought is maybe the fish isn’t fresh and a common practice is to soak fish in saltwater to remove the fishy taste, a problem that wouldn’t exist if the fish is fresh. In the balkans, near multiple lakes and rivers full of trout and the adriatic sea with white fish - and you’re telling me that a Michelin Guide restaurant can’t get fresh fish? Service If you read the one star reviews it seems that bad service is a persistent problem at this restaurant. It was my dad’s birthday. Our original waiter was fine, I asked if they had a candle and maybe we will order a cake or get something drawn on like happy birthday, and he said he will try. When we tried to get a dessert menu, a different waiter came to the table and I tried asking him the same thing, except he just looked down and was extremely dismissive, and said they don’t have anything. In any regular restaurant, at the very least they could not act so dismissively and coldly when someone says it’s their birthday. I am not expecting a free glass of bubbly or chocolate syrup wording - and you might say that in like most restaurants of that calibre this something they can provide at zero effort and cost and would even suggest this - but it is honestly really disappointing to be treated so rudely. Michelin Guide, if you want to have any credibility at all, then maybe you should review this restaurant again. Or maybe try Julija, which was worlds apart from this restaurant and knows a thing or two about gastronomy and hospitality and is packed even at 9pm.

We stumbled upon this restaurant after a sightseeing tour and decided to have lunch here. We had the 3 course menu and it was amazing. They have two vegetarian options for starters and two for mains. The food was amazing and the service too. We got some great recommendations for wine bars and sightseeing.

We went for lunch and they have very good offer menu. We selected 2 courses (25€). Foods were amazing, I love the warm bread basket with different choices and brown butter. I specially love the most is artic whitefish ceviche as the starter. In addition, the chef’s small complimentary was chicken liver pate with cracker were delicious as well. Service is friendly and fast.

This was the only restaurant in the city I actually liked. My tour guide kept telling me how great Slovene food is, and I went to a few places rated high on TripAdvisor etc and got some dishes from the famous food festival, but I was far from impressed. Gostilna na Gradu’s ingredients were the freshest I’ve tasted in Ljubljana in about a month. The dish of the day was beef cheek when I visited, and the beef was perfectly cooked, but the mushrooms and vegetables and sautéed potato actually stole the show so I ended up ordering another dish with mushrooms in it. My favorite was the sea bass though, which was a pleasant surprise since all the foods locals recommended were either pastries or meat-based. I really hope they had more vegan options that starred those roasted mushrooms they put in the beef cheek dish! And I hope the entree dishes came in a bit smaller portion sizes—half of what I actually got would have been perfect—so I can try a number of different dishes rather than labor my way through a large bowl of the same food, however good it may taste. I wonder if this means I should have explored more vegan or seafood-centered dishes during my stay here… All in all, a nice last meal in the city for sure.
