Gornergrat Railway

To continue the ride from the Glacier express you take this scenic train ride up to the Matterhorn! We came during a beautiful but sadly, overcast day! The Matterhorn was ever illusive during this trip like Bigfoot back home in the PNW, oh well, I just have to come back! This train gets pretty packed but is so worth it! Make sure you get a window seat on the right side going up and the left side coming back down! Get your camera and enjoy the ride!

Love it! I purchased my tickets ahead of time. Once we arrived at Zermatt, we took the Gornergrat Railway up. The views heading up were exceptional. I went around 9-10:00 am on weekdays, which was pretty empty. I would highly recommend coming on a weekday. On the way down, we saw a rainbow, which was pretty cool as well. I highly recommend it as the train ride is pretty relaxing, and once you’re at the top, hiking trails and restaurants are available. There’s tons to do where you can easily stay up there the entire day.

This is a GREAT EXPERIENCE! Anyone visiting Zermatt should definitely experience taking the Gornergrat Railway to the top. (We were there in October so there was no wait to buy tickets BUT if you're there during peak season, I'd probably suggest to buy them ahead of time.

Quite disappointed in the lack of facilities at the end station up the top of the Cornergrat, a few shops, tiny takeaway shop selling coffee (maybe 10 seats) & small range of takeaway food. Very few seats outside to enjoy the view. Restaurant did not appear that large & opened at 11.30am for sit down service. No other spot for a nice coffee & cake/snack. If you don’t have time for the Zoom, you won’t miss much. When buying ticket recommend paying for priority seating as you get on the train 1st and get best pick of the seating. Right side has views of Matterhorn. Recommend buying something from a supermarket in Zermatt, then get off at Rotenboden station (either on your way up or down) for a short walk to a small lake plus spectacular views of glaciers. A couple of seats or rocks to perch on & enjoy your snack, views are spectacular. Compared to the Stanserhorn, this one has very limited facilities considering the number of visitors.

This train offers an incredible experience for sightseeing, with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn. The scenery becomes even more spectacular as you reach the summit, making it an unforgettable journey.

Lovely day with the family here. Surreal experience. In my opinion probably the best view of the Matterhorn you can get here. Price can be quite steep though especially during peak season. So check first before coming here as different time of the year has different prices. Nevertheless a must experience at least once in your lifetime. Highly recommend.
