"This stately Beaux Arts building in the heart of downtown Charleston houses a permanent art collection spanning four centuries. You can browse the museum shop on the ground floor at no cost (a nice way to duck the weather), or pay to head upstairs for an immersive view of Charleston’s artistic past and present. The Gibbes is not a huge museum: you could walk through it in under an hour, but it’s better to linger, to savor your favorites, and to read the insightful commentary. Not all paintings are Charleston-centric in subject matter, but as a whole they tell a Charleston story: a pastel portrait dated 1711 created by America’s first known female artist; aristocratic oils depicting Colonial residents in silk and lace finery; ornate silver monogrammed teapots hammered with palmetto imagery for a wealthy Antebellum patron; glazed stoneware hand-signed by its enslaved maker. There are watercolors and etchings from Charleston’s 1920s and 1930s artistic “renaissance,” sweetgrass pieces fashioned by Gullah weavers, and the vivid and surreal paintings of celebrated local artist Jonathan Green." - Allston McCrady

"So, what’s this place about? This stately Beaux Arts building in the heart of downtown Charleston houses a permanent art collection spanning four centuries. You can browse the museum shop on the ground floor at no cost (a nice way to duck the weather), or pay to head upstairs for an immersive view of Charleston’s artistic past and present. How’s the space?     The Gibbes is not a huge museum: you could walk through it quickly in under an hour, but it’s better to linger, to savor your favorites, and to read the insightful commentary. The ground floor is lined with artist-in-residence studios and hands-on classrooms. The 2nd floor showcases the building’s original Tiffany-designed glass rotunda, and displays the museum’s permanent collection (from traditional to contemporary). Rotating special exhibits fill the 3rd floor and are often cutting-edge: mixed media, woven art, digital, flip-card animation, AI-generated collaborations, and other thought-provoking creations. The art’s the main thing, of course. How is it? Not all paintings are Charleston-centric in subject matter, but as a whole they tell a Charleston story: a pastel portrait dated 1711 created by America’s first known female artist; aristocratic oils depicting Colonial residents in silk and lace finery; ornate silver monogrammed teapots hammered with palmetto imagery for a wealthy Antebellum patron; glazed stoneware hand-signed by its enslaved maker. There are watercolors and etchings from Charleston’s 1920s and 1930s artistic “renaissance,” sweetgrass pieces fashioned by Gullah weavers, and the vivid and surreal paintings of celebrated local artist Jonathan Green. Personally I love to take in the museum’s 18th and 19th century miniature portrait collection: highly detailed watercolors on palm-sized porcelain, hundreds of exquisite little likenesses commissioned by loved ones. Some miniatures even have the subject’s own hair decoratively woven into the frame or tucked into the locket—haunting and sentimental reminders of those who have passed through this city. Did you meet anyone on staff? Did they make an impression?     You can pay extra for specially guided tours with the curator or director, but the written museum labels do an excellent job of explaining the back-story and significance of each piece and its place in the grander scheme of Charleston’s history and evolution. At the end of the day, what—or who—is this place best for?    Two older locals, gushing with enthusiasm, stopped me as I was entering, to tell me to be sure to take in the top floor special exhibit. They had seen it multiple times that week and were openly soliciting strangers to do the same. It pleased me to see strong local support for this age-old institution and its more radically innovative, culturally sensitive acquisitions and forays. On the top floor, a mother and her 10-year-old son openly debated the significance of an artwork. Young and old can engage here." - Allston McCrady

"With a 100 year history in the same building, the Gibbes Museum was more than due for a renovation. The building itself is the only Beaux Arts building in Charleston, and the renovation is really a celebration of its original layout: The two year makeover uncovered, cleaned up, and put on display original details like tile, original wood, and gorgeous stained glass. The renovation also neatly divided the building into distinct spaces—the first floor is open to the public, with a library, shop, and public programs; the second floor shows works from their collection (more than 10,000 strong); and the third floor offers contemporary artwork and visiting exhibitions. If you're there during the week, stop by on a Wednesday night, when you can hear lectures and watch film screenings on the ground level. "

Went on their initial Open Mic night off spoken word. Great local talent with a feature artist. This night, the museum is also open 5-8PM/free. Beautiful museum with interesting exhibits. Gift shop had good offerings as well. You're also able to purchase artists work. Staffing friendly and helpful.

The Gibbes Museum is a treasure in French Quarter Charleston! With an array of galleries, this place is a great place for a solo visit to peruse and look at interesting and thought-provoking art. Friendly staff to assist with questions. We installed our “Tree of Every Color” for Art Charleston, an art festival happening in and around The Gibbes! It’s cool to be apart of such a wonderful artist community!

Small art museum. Variety of art. I recommend going after lunch so there are not school groups there like we experienced. Plan on about an hour to see everything.

The Gibbes has been on my list for a while and my kids were finally big enough to enjoy the collections. It is not a big museum, 8 galleries, and I really appreciated that. It is easy to navigate and you can see the whole museum without rushing. The permanent collection was filled with local pieces and information. My kids and I learned a lot while we were there and enjoyed exploring. The staff was friendly and engaging. I would definitely recommend stopping in!

This place is spectacular! We came on a Tuesday morning and it was perfect. There were a few tours and visitors, but it was quiet enough to enjoy. We came specifically for a couple of the temporary exhibits, but we were also amazed by the permanent collection! The building is beautiful as well. Overall, we were very impressed by everything and we’ll definitely be back.

Google
Incredibly moving experience. The raw humanity in the art and horrors of our past. Terrible and beautiful at the same time. We have so much to be thankful for. I left heartbroken and inspired at the same time. I didn't know exactly what to expect before I walked in. I left more human.

Rebecca Collier

Google
Enjoyed the permanent & temporary exhibits. Visited on a Saturday and there weren't many visitors - felt like we could take our time in each room without being in the way.

This is a cute art gallery, and it was free Wednesday evening when we went. It also opened till 8 pm on Wednesday so it’s a great place to swing by after an early dinner. It’s a nice space and has a good variety of art pieces. The gallery is easy to navigate and just the right size to bring the family and keep kids entertained.

Yelp
This is a great little museum in Charleston. I truly had an enjoyable experience. The art was beautiful and we got to enjoy 3 floors or various art. There were some large and semi interactive pieces. I plan to go again.

Yelp
For all its other attractions and its aesthetic pleasures, it was a bit surprising to me that there are not a ton of art museums in Charleston. There are many smaller galleries. This one is old, and while not free of cultural pathology it is largely a worthwhile endeavor. The building is majestic, and though it is three floors, the amount of art is not huge and I spent maybe an hour or so doing a very detailed perusal of the collection. Their visiting exhibition was an excellent set of botanical paintings, but the second floor housed the pieces that represented the surrounding area and its history. I could imagine events here being worthwhile. The museum is not on my list of top things to do, but on an off weather day when you're looking for something to do, it is certainly worth perusing.

Yelp
The Gibbes is a lovely museum showcasing a variety of art. They have paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photography. We were there for the Gibbes Goes Green Family Day, which was a free event for all! It mostly features local Charleston art on the 2nd floor with the 1st floor being the gift shop and garden, and 3rd being the traveling exhibit. They have a great flow and everything is laid out neatly. The miniature room reveals the faces behind the names on every street sign in Charleston. Don't forget to pull out the drawers to reveal even more hidden treasures. Great place to visit if you enjoy museums and you like fine art. Lots to see here!

Chrissy F.

Yelp
The Gibbes Museum of Art mostly features local Charleston art on the 2nd floor with 1st being the gift shop and garden, 3rd being the traveling exhibit. Currently "The Bitter Years" exhibit is featuring photography from Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, and other photographers from The Great Depression. The migrant worker was recognizable thanks to textbooks featuring her during my school days. Very moving to see the emotions caught in photograph. The 2nd floor includes local art, portraits, modern art, impressionists, realists, and an assortment of mahogany furniture and few statues. They were setting up for a wedding so the museum can be rented out for private events including the garden area which was closed off for the event setup. Overall it's a small museum but still get moments to stir emotions from the works of artists, get conversations going, admire the talents, see how others see the world..great way to pass the time. Thanks to a generous donor, some dates have a "pay want you will" day. That's what also brought me in today!

Mark L.

Yelp
The Gibbes provides a deep chronological look at Charleston's rich history with some modern exhibits to balance. It provides a baseline of the Charleston journey in art, decor, photos and memorabilia. With its learning center and event space it offers a full array of options from the elements of art to wedding receptions. This a good and traditional option while in Charleston.

Yelp
Had such a wonderful time at the Gibbes this weekend. It's easily explored within a couple of hours as it is a smaller art museum. They have a great flow and everything is laid out very neatly. Interesting subject matters and a nice collection of various artists on display. I very much appreciated the benches in each room as well as the comment log to let the Museum know what you enjoyed. It was a nice way to communicate with them. We took a little time to take in the art surrounding us and create a small doddle of our own in the process. Can't wait to go back and drink in some more art. We even explored the Studio areas and had a very pleasant conversation with one of the new artists in residence about to be showing within the next couple of months. They have a very nice patio and ballroom for private events as well as out in the courtyard behind the museum.

Yelp
Went here a few months ago. Nice little place but you can breeze through it in roughly 30 minutes unless you read every description of every piece. Some nice stuff here! But very hard to justify the entrance fee when I have paid much less (or nothing) to see much more elsewhere. And parking is kind of miserable in the area. It was a good diversion on an afternoon but definitely a one time experience and I don't see myself returning without a major draw. J.Ja

Yelp
Located in historic downtown Charleston, The Gibbes is a lovely museum showcasing a variety of art. They have paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photography. I was there for a preview of the exhibit of "Bo Bartlett: Earthly Matters", which was very nice. The Gibbes collections are primarily themed around Charleston and the Lowcountry. I noticed Johnathan Green has pieces here, as I was leaving. So, I'll have to come back to see his artwork. It's a great place to check out if you are an art lover or touring the town.

Eli Z.

Yelp
Really beautiful ambiance. A lot of unique pieces. Definitely spent more than an hour exploring!

Glen H.

Yelp
This museum really wasn't my thing. I found the featured exhibit to be a bit boring and it took up the whole third floor. There were some nice pictures on the second floor, but nothing to look at on the first. Guard looked mean, which I guess is a good thing as you don't want anyone touching the paintings! Perhaps the next exhibit will be better, but I won't be in town for it. As art is subjective, perhaps others will like the current exhibit and the gallery itself was nice looking. Hence the four stars.

Jeffery B.

Yelp
Set up nicely for a live jazz music performance. Nice sounds and gave us a preview of a museum that wasn't on my immediate radar, but which I will now be attending for future exhibits.

Danielle P.

Yelp
Beautiful museum in the most fabulous part of the city! You can literally walk to several others site once you get parked. I parked on the same street as 82 Queen restaurant, safe and good hourly prices. This was one of my bucket list museums, so super excited to visit. They were practicing Covid precautions, which was a plus. The only bathroom open is on the first floor for visitors. Simply pay your entrance fee at the gift shop, the staff was really helpful during our visit. Scan the app in the gift shop for a self guided tour on your phone. The gift shop has some nice things from local artist. I did boy some postcards just for my memories. The museum offers a glimpse into Charleston's history, art work and the past. Each room is set up nicely, stroll, and take your time. It will take you approx. one hour, depending on your interest. Jonathan Green's art work is located here, so I quickly made my way upstairs to view. I spent most of my time looking at all the beautiful pieces. It's well worth your time while visiting Charleston!

Nneka A.

Yelp
Great place to visit while in Charleston if you enjoy museums and you like fine art. Lots to see.

Hayley T.

Yelp
This is an extremely small art museum, so bare this in mind. However, for $12 it was a nice hour long experience, for art lovers. I will say, about 50-60% of the exhibit is oil portraits. Another 20% of the exhibit is artwork of local landscape and monuments. If you are into portraits or oil work, you'll be excited, but if you prefer modern art, other mediums, or a variety of subjects, you might be bored.

Hannah K.

Yelp
Came here for a wedding and it was amazing!! Didn't get to see much art but it was an absolutely beautiful setting with lots of open space and natural lighting!

Kaela M.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by this museum. I stopped here while on a road trip passing through Charleston. I'm glad I went! I'm an art teacher, so art is really my thing. I wasn't sure what to expect in regard to the museum's size or quality of the works. But like I said, pleasantly surprised. They have something for everyone: drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, and sculptures. They also have a nice selection of "old and new" art. I thought the exhibits were all well curated and relevant to the modern museum goer. My favorite pieces were the miniature collection, the four marble busts on display, and an interactive sculptural piece. I definitely recommend a trip if you haven't been! I spent close to two hours here, but I estimate the average person spends about 45-60 minutes.

Don H.

Yelp
Rainy day surprise in Charleston. The current exhibit, Unnatural Selection, referencing climate change and the natural world, was very creative thought-provoking and impressive. It included nationally known artists including Kiki Smith and Preston Singletary. The other contemporary art on the 3rd floor was also shrinking and enjoyable. As we worked our way down to the first floor, toward more traditional 18th & 19th century art, I felt that we'd already seen the best that Charleston offered and we didn't spend as much time wandering through those galleries.

Kelly C.

Yelp
Beautiful museum in one of the most beautiful cities in the USA. This is a great spot to spend a day when it's cold or rainy outside (or any day, really). This offers a glimpse of Charleston's rich history captured in various forms by its occupants and visitors. There's something here for every taste and style of art. Unlike most museums, the cafeteria and the gift shop at the Gibbes both offer affordable options. You can stop by to pick up a trinket as a gift or meet a friend for lunch.

Ashton M.

Yelp
The Gibbes is a wonderful yet small art museum in Charleston. They have permanent collections as well as rotating exhibits. Much of their permanent collection is themed around Charleston and the Lowcountry. Their gift shop is great; I recently purchased a Jonathan Green poster I'd been eyeing for a while. If you're a resident, know that Charleston County Public Library has a Gibbes pass for check-out.

Paradise T.

Yelp
What a beautiful museum. The floor level is free to enter and enjoy. This includes a rotation of contemporary local artists and their gorgeous backyard terrace. $12 entry for the 2nd and 3rd floors. From some pretty ancient busts to colonial era portraits to post modern cubism to contemporary international artists, there's a little bit of everything here. Additionally, I got a chance to enjoy some microscopic mosaics which was a surprise. This museum is in historic downtown Charleston, close to the market. An absolute gem.

Kristie K.

Yelp
Good representation of African American and women artists. I only had a half an hour. No special pricing if you come late in the day unfortunately. Still praying enjoyed myself and want to come back when I have more time. I saw the Alice Smith "Japonsime in Charleston" exhibit on the third floor. Nice to see a woman have her own exhibit. They showed her process working with wood cuts and also had examples of her watercolors. I only had 10 minutes left for the second floor. I skipped the permanent exhibits but got to see works by artists of the Harlem Renaissance. There were artists I never heard of and familiar ones. It left me wanting to learn more about African Americans artists. I took art history in the 80s so I hadn't even heard of Jacob Lawrence back then! But it's never too late to learn. Take your time and enjoy. A museum doesn't have to have all the heavy hitters to be great art.

Julio H.

Yelp
Beautiful building with lots of works that chronicle the plantation years of South Carolina. Even if you think these are non consequential to your existence, well, they are great examples of what fine art is NOT. But luckily that is limited to the first floor. The second floor has rotating exhibits of modern artists and these are very good. Check it out and definitively talk to the staff, who are extremely knowledgeable about art.

Erroll Anne H.

Yelp
Such a beautiful jewel box of a museum. I have been coming here since I was a child, and have always loved it. There are always great traveling exhibits here- the current exhibition of micromosaic jewels is fascinating. A thoughtful touch- there are three handheld magnifying glasses at each exhibit to enable you to really admire the details. What I particularly love about the Gibbes is that they have such a well curated and varied collection of Southern art and furniture, modern art, local artists, and interesting installations and exhibitions. There truly is something to appeal to everyone and every taste or interest.

Madison S.

Yelp
Loved some of the installations! Especially the (temporary) William Johnson collection. It's a fairly small place but provides a good hour or so of cool things to look at!

Julie H.

Yelp
What a lovely art museum with extensive, permanent collections and exciting special exhibits. The building is gorgeous and spacious. Whether you are visiting Charleston or live here like I do, it's a must see! I visit several times a year and enjoy the changing exhibits and the visiting artists.

Evan G.

Yelp
I really like the Gibbes Museum Of Art on Meeting Street in Charleston. I have been coming here since I was a little and this museum always seems to inspire imagination and inspiration to create. I like that there are really good exhibits, programs, and events held here that makes it seem like a different experience each time, but still familiar and something that you can remember and return and enjoy again. I like all of the pieces that show the history of Charleston and South Carolina and all of the different stories that they tell of all of the different centuries. This museum is very consistent in the quality it delivers. I look forward to being able to come back here many times in the future.

Susan O.

Yelp
Loved this experience. Curated with history of Charleston and its hometown artists. Very interesting. Loved the variety of art. And the 3rd floor wasn't open as the gallery was being changed to a new exhibit. Plenty to see and learn about on the 2nd floor. Don't miss it if you enjoy learning and seeing different artists and their art. And the special exhibit on Impressionism was beautiful. Thanks Gibbes for a wonderful afternoon.

Steve T.

Yelp
Never went in museum since $15, which seemed excessive for a smallish gallery with the kind of art it has on show. However, there is a nice spacious and clean cafe just inside door, and i get the impression is never crowded. They also have a nice gift shop where you will find some things that are a little different.

Alisha N.

Yelp
I enjoyed it, because I find art irresistible. It's worth checking out, especially the rotating exhibitions. The elevator was not working but the staff were kind enough to help us use the service elevator. By the way, the café is no longer operating.

LOIS B.

Yelp
This was a wonderful art museum. It is laid out over 2 and a half floors in order, earliest to most recent and alternates featured artists. Some furniture and household items are also included. You enter through the gift shop and progression is extremely orderly. Not only is history included, but the person who commissioned the work and who donated it, is also mentioned. Quite interesting. The stained glass dome is worth a few moments of seated enjoyment. Despite being built as a museum, it gives the feeling of an old mansion.

Megan E.

Yelp
Kind of obsessed with the Gibbes. I don't believe I've ever reviewed a museum before, but the Gibbes made me really excited. The collections aren't massive, but it was well worth the $10 student price I paid. I was impressed with the building and space. The permanent collection had some thoughtfully curated work from well known artist who are from Charleston or whose work involves Charleston. I don't want to give away the whole experience but the placement and circulation of art in the space was very cool. The contemporary work was great, in depth and surprisingly rich as far as artist... and I loved the inclusion of the Gullah Geechee Weavings. There was a visiting exhibit by Radcliffe Bailey when I went, which was wonderful. My fav thing however was the #Gibbesfan. I love fans, and there's a special place in my heart for church fans so having the fans with a bit of art on it was a nice touch, attention to detail and a cute souvenir. Finally, I'll say that I was nervous about suggesting this as a thing to do with my friends because there are many reviews with complaints about the $15 price but this is very good for a city Charleston's size... One could easily pay 15 bucks at a bar for a drink + tip in Charleston or you can easily spend $15-25 at a movie theater, so if you are into experiences and you like art I think this is well worth your $15.

James R.

Yelp
Small but beautifully curated exhibits. Offering regional artists and topics. They also display contemporary and more historic works.

Amy Lauren S.

Yelp
I went here today because the museum offers free admission on Second Sunday (Second Sunday on King, held each month). That's a really neat perk and gives locals a chance to go to the art museum, something I never thought about doing. We went to the Civil War Photography exhibit, and it was really cool. TONS of pictures from the Civil War, definitely worth a visit if you're a history buff. The volunteers were also super nice and helpful, and there's some sort of program where you can follow along and listen to information about the art on your smartphone (we didn't, but it's neat that they have it). The only downside is that if you're not really into Charleston history, this museum may not be the place for you. A lot of the works of art are focused around Charleston and Charleston history (or things like the Civil War, obviously a big part of Charleston history).

Agnes T.

Yelp
We really loved the Gibbes Musuem. It was the perfect place to spend a rainy morning in Charleston. We particularly loved their most recent acquisitions: African-American art that spoke to civil rights issues. The building itself was a piece of art: a very thoughtful use of space and materials. It takes two to three hours tops to see everything.

Sheryl K.

Yelp
On vacation in the Carolina's and we had a wonderful time looking inside the museum. Beautiful displays and friendly staff. Definatly worth exploring.

Kelsey A.

Yelp
No complaints here. It was a good art museum, reasonably priced, with a good amount of art to view. The lady working at the front was very kind and happy as well.

Kristen D.

Yelp
I'm an art lover so it is hard to disappoint. But this is a fantastic look into the beginnings of modern art and the Guggenheim. So much information and art by artists that shaped nonobjective art, and even more information on Hilla Rebay, including her own art. Loved it. No Impressionism here though

Ryan S.

Yelp
Enjoyed visiting here very much. My wife is more into art than I am, but we both enjoyed it. It takes about an hour or so to see everything. The art is beautiful, and the gallery is beautiful. Recommend a visit for sure!

JP S.

Yelp
Love Museums and love Art, well don't leave the downtown Charleston peninsula without giving this place a visit and plan on at least an hour. 3 floors of recently renovated interior/exterior this museum now has a cafe (opening soon) and a nice gift shop. The renovation unearthed a beautiful tile floor that is "wow" hidden for years under carpet. The first floor offers studios for art lessons and such and children's activities and also egress to the gardens and fountain in the back. Spend a sunny day contemplating all the art you just viewed in this very peaceful and simple garden. The background white noise of the fountain can lul you to sleep on one of the benches. The art is exhibited in permanent and visiting exhibits on floors 2 and 3. At present is the non-objective contemporary art of the 1930's on loan from the Guggenheim collection of NYC. There are a few Picaccos, Bauers and Kaminskis for those stoked about abstract art. If a tourist, make your Charleston adventure just a little bit more cultural than just a retail stroll down King St. and for locals... pop in periodically for new exhibits in a fantastic museum you can view when given only a couple of hours.

Diane C.

Yelp
We bought the passport at the Charleston Visitor Center to see 9 attractions in 2 days. To see an art museum amongst all the primarily house museums was a breath of fresh air. The museum is not excessively large so seeing all the art is very doable. There are some great pieces here--Photography and an unusual and unique, huge set of three sculptures made of natural materials that we were able to walk inside of if you wanted. They had some very large striking portraits that I greatly admired. There were other nice sections of art as well. You could easily spend an hour or two or three depending on how much time you want to spend. All the staff were accommodating and helpful. There is a nice museum store and a cafe. My friend and I ate in the museum cafe. The chef was accommodating and the food was good. They have a new menu and I enjoyed my smoked whitefish salad sandwich on some very good bread. The chocolate chip cookie was good also my friend said. She didn't share and neither did I!!! Lol. She bought a photo in the museum store that she liked very much. We left the museum only to return a few minutes later when my friend discovered that she had left her iPhone somewhere in the museum. They had it at the museum store and my friend was very happy and thankful to get it back!!

Jen N.

Yelp
The Gibbes is a lovely museum nestled in the heart of Charleston. The artwork is beautiful and the stories about some of the pieces are fascinating. We loved learning more about the history of the south through art. The layout is rather small and we felt like we were wandering around in someone's large home instead of touring a museum. The admission counter is sort of tucked in the gift shop where we had to prompt the cashier to get admission information (and later noticed that a foreign couple just wandered right in without paying.) However, there are some absolutely stunning pieces: the Veiled Lady is gorgeous and the stained glass dome on the second floor is just incredible. If you're a fan of art, you will truly appreciate the Gibbes.

Susanna F.

Yelp
Great museum featuring many artists local to Charleston and the Carolinas! They have both a permanent collection (located on the second floor) and temporary exhibits (third floor). I'm not familiar with how the museum looked prior to its remodel, but it is very clean with multiple rooms as galleries that are easy to navigate through. The staff and volunteers were very pleasant, offering descriptions of each gallery if requested so that was definitely a plus. A cafe is coming soon too! Don't quote me on it, but a lady I chatted with promised wine would be available there as well when the cafe is completed. Enough said.

Christine C.

Yelp
The Gibbes main focus is on Charleston artwork and artists. My significant other and I went to see the Sound and Vision: Monumental Rock and Roll Photography exhibit which will be on display until December of this year. We perused a couple of the standard galleries, but quickly went upstairs to the Photography exhibit. It was PHENOMENAL! Many of the photographs are iconic images that were later used for album covers. The exhibit includes several of the albums that incorporated i the photograph which hung nearby on the wall including The Rolling Stones More Hot Rocks album. The original photograph was taken with Vaseline on the lens in order to accentuate the early London morning fog after an all-night recording session. These types of stories that accompany the photos give the exhibit an "insider" feel. To name just a few of the musicians who are pictured: Little Richard, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Elvis Presley, Kiss, David Bowie, and many more. I would highly recommend this exhibit for anyone interested in the history of Rock and Roll and music in general. Tip: Be sure to read the story that accompanies the picture of Elvis playing the piano.

Yelp
Cool museum but pretty small for the price of $9. Saving grace...awesome Rock N Roll photo exhibit. And the small contemporary gallery on floor 3

Yelp
This is THE art museum in Charleston, and focuses on art made in the area from colonial period onward. This was our first stop in Charleston, and we came here after getting off the plane on an overnight flight. Despite our grogginess, I found this museum really fun, and enjoyed the chronological tour through the artistry of the area. That said, it was clear that contemporary art was lacking, either in the museum's collection or in the region in general. It represented some southeastern artists (the best Jasper Johns they could have, for example), but also had sketchier information on the wall labels. For a Sally Mann photograph it had text contextualizing the photograph within the wrong series of work. I guess it's clear that they don't have a dedicated photo curator!

Yelp
Really weak museum, yet a $12 entrance fee. Quickest visit to a museum ever. I love art museums, but you are better off strolling through the galleries on King Street than attending the Gibbes.

Yelp
Great gift shop! Super friendly & helpful staff. The tours they offer are, mostly, no additional charge and always the two E's- educational & enjoyable! Adore this place, the art, the staff, tours and all of the extra events they offer. So proud to be a member.

Yelp
Newly remodeled, it seems like a completely different place. Can't wait for the cafe to open.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great way to spend the afternoon downtown Charleston make sure you stop by Gibbes. It's one of my favorite places to go. My boyfriend took me on our first date here & we've been back 2 or 3 more times to view special exhibits they had. They have never disappointed.
