Step into the German Gymnasium, a stylish rebirth of London's first gym, where chic grandeur meets hearty German fare just a hop from King's Cross.
"The German Gymnasium is a huge, stunning - yes, we said stunning - Grade II listed building that dates all the way back to 1865. But amidst the high ceilings, original beams, grand café, meister bar, and mezzanine floor, is a great sized lift and an accessible bathroom with snazzy wallpaper and gold grab rails, no less. The food here is your classic German fare, ranging from dressed up currywurst to holstein schnitzel. And although none of it will change your life, this place is perfect for a special catch-up or a proper date night." - heidi lauth beasley
"It’s time to pull out the big guns. And you know what that means? Yes, it’s schnitzel time. Okay, before you start thinking we attended The Arnold Schwarzenegger School Of Business, we’re talking about the business-lunch-wonder that is German Gymnasium in King’s Cross. We don’t use the word ‘stunning’ often, but that’s pretty much the only word you can use to describe this Grade II listed building. Although the food won’t make you do backflips, and the barstools are very pink, their £15 daily lunch specials are very decent and, importantly, include a glass of wine. Right next to King’s Cross station, this place is perfect if you’re meeting out of towners." - heidi lauth beasley
"Whether it’s a birthday, promotion, or they’re just really excited that they finally have someone to share a single Amazon Prime account with, it’s time to celebrate. The German Gymnasium is a big, grand brasserie in King’s Cross with high ceilings and lots of plush pink seating. Toast to the happy couple at the meister bar with a Der Berliner cocktail, and then all three of you can head for a table and get involved in chicken schnitzel and some serious currywurst." - heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak
"All the sausages at German Gymnasium are made by farmers in Northern Germany especially for the restaurant, and the currywurst is particularly good fun. Handmade to a traditional method, this curried pork sausage is served sliced and topped with a rich, (again) curried tomato sauce and triple cooked chips. A street food staple in grand surroundings." - Helen Graves
"Your fanciest friend moved out of your eight-person ‘creative space’ (translation: illegal digs) and settled in W9. Don’t worry, you’re still both equal in the eyes of TfL. German Gymnasium at King’s Cross is fancy enough to make your friend, the high-ceiling convert, feel at home, and it’s also secretly affordable enough for you to not to have to live off of tinned hotdogs for the rest of the month if you have anything more expensive than a glass of water here. Their set menu offers three courses and a glass of sparkling wine for £30. We’d go for the Kasekrainer, and finish the catch up in style, with an apple strudel soaked in vanilla sauce." - heidi lauth beasley
