Kidfriendlydc.com is spot on with summarizing the Georgetown Waterfront Park: "Georgetown Waterfront Park is like a Joni Mitchell song in reverse: They unpaved a parking lot and put up paradise."
Georgetown Waterfront Park is a 10 acre linear park along a scenic curve of the Potomac River overlooking Roosevelt Island, the Arlington skyline, Memorial and Francis Scott Key Bridges, the Kennedy Performing Arts Center, Watergate, and acres of riverfront. In essence, the Georgetown Waterfront Park is a riverwalk between the Washington Harbor and Francis Scott Key Bridge. It is a riverwalk that is incorporated into the National Park system and serves as a vital connection to approximately 225 miles of parkland reaching to Mount Vernon, Virginia and Cumberland, Maryland.
The Georgetown Waterfront is a riverside landscape where people can escape the hustle and bustle of the Washington DC streets to partake in relaxation and recreation. The Potomac River is a popular water playground for paddleboating. The pristine vista of Roosevelt Island gives the illusion that you are paddleboating when George Washington was President. The centerpiece, the interactive fountain area is where families gather. Children play in the interactive fountain area while adults enjoy the scenic Vistas from a comfortable bench. Outdoor recreationists utilize the river walk for jogging, running, and hiking.
The Waterfront Park is wide with parallel trails, greenery, a sundry of benches, and consistent vistas of the Potomac River and the Georgetown waterfront. What it isn't is shady. The trees have years to grow into canopies providing shade.
What is interesting is that this riverwalk used to be a series of blighted land uses along the river. This included parking lots. There had been a plan to build an Interstate in its place. The public said "no way" to this. What you have is a linear park that celebrates the river.
Wisconsin Avenue is a gateway to the park. When we explored Georgetown Waterfront via Wisconsin Avenue, our first impression was the fountain with the Potomac River. We walked it east to the Harbor then west toward the bridge. This is a walking shoreline post card. My favorite moments were sitting on the bench clearing my thoughts while taking in the sights and sounds of the river. With this said, I'd like to add meditating to the list of activities to enjoy here. Suddenly the summer humidity turned to a rainstorm and we'd have to seek shelter in the Washington Harbor Starbuck's. The Washington Harbor complex is an attractive landmark along the Waterfront and a nice place for lunch. When the sun returned, we made our way toward the bridge. Then suddenly it was raining again and we ultimately departed the park to seek shelter on Water Street. In a way this was a good thing. The hiking bug was biting and have a feeling that I was going to lead my family on an extended hike. A cab from Cumberland, Maryland to Thomas Circle is very $.
When you unpave a parking lot and put up paradise, the result is spectacular places. Georgetown Waterfront Park is a shining example.
