It's my first time experiencing a Christmas market in Europe and I loved this one the best of the four I visited in Berlin. The square in which it's usually located is under construction so it was moved a few blocks away. It's cute, charming, cozy and feels like locals go there. Cost 2€ to enter but it's pretty big and had interesting food. Loved the arts and crafts tent! If I could transport a handcrafted windmill (apparently called pyramids) home intact in my suitcase I totally would haha. Next favorite was the market near the Kaiser Wilhelm church which was free. The market at Alexanderplatz was also large but felt too touristy and like a carnival - it was free. There was another market at the opposite end of that area closer to the museum island which looked better, but we didn't get to visit. There's a small one at Dorothea Schlegel platz but I'd only go there if you're at the Friedrich train station. But there's so many Christmas markets in Berlin, you'll definitely be able to hit a few during your trip!

Been eagerly waiting to get here and booked a hotel nearby. Though the Christmas ornaments were spectacular, I didn't purchase any. There was a variety of food stalls and some had seating options. It was an experience but too crowded to get a good photo. Had our very first curry wurst here. Wished I could buy food to go. No to-go option here. There is 1 Euro admission fee. It is walking distance to many landmarks.

This is a nice square in Berlin. It's the epicenter of three iconic and historic buildings and often has cute markets. There are stalls for German food, gifts or to warm up with some gluhwein (spiced wine). The cathedral is beautiful to look at as are the concert hall. This is a very busy and popular place. A great spot for people watching and capturing some nice pics too.

In A Nutshell: -Gendarmenmarkt is an awesome Christmas Market in Berlin. -It's a small square situated between a couple of iconic buildings which act as the perfect backdrop during winter. -Enjoy many food stalls serving the best German comfort foods while sipping on some mulled wine. -There is a stage that is set-up w/ performances by Santa & others. -You can even find pop-up restaurants that serve amazing foods. Overall, this is a great Christmas Market, it's small & crowded but worth checking out while you are in Berlin!

Freedom rings when breathing in this place! German architecture is exuded, yes! I get enraptured in new places that has history and how it came about. Not only is it enlightening on how it surpassed or survived the struggles, but it makes me to believe that it happens and it will endure all of it because of purpose and love. Learn from the past, learn from the present and encapture the moment to move forward towards the future! Smile while at. Life is too short to turn it upside down! I'd say mind as well live it up! :)

We came New Year's Eve, 6 Euro pp instead of 1. There was a band which played a lot of 80's and 90's songs. Stores and food was ok.

Loved this huge market- we went two or three times. It was packed every time. In the shadow of the Konzerthaus, there was even an indoor section at this one, that had tons of vendors with hats, bags, jewelry, paper, crafts, wooden items, all kinds of hand-crafted things. Truly lovely stuff and the best market for gift buying we encountered of all the holiday markets. Loved it and wish I could do this every year!

Undoubtedly one of Berlin's fanciest squares, architecture fans flock here to admire three buildings: The German and French Cathedrals (Deutscher und Französischer Dom) and Schinkel's Konzerthaus. I was distractedly admiring the facades of the said structures while our guide was talking about its history, however, I did find it ironic that both German and French influences are able to co-exist peacefully in one plaza =) After you take your panoramic shot, you can sit down and soak in the atmosphere. This area is very posh and surrounded by glitzy hotels and nice restaurants. At Christmas time, this place is buzzing with actitivies from the holiday martket. Maybe I'll get to experience that someday.

Gendarmenmarkt, home to the beautiful German Cathedral and also housing Christmas Markets in the latter parts of the year, this historic square in the German capital, Berlin has developed a high-end nature of late, especially with the restaurants in the square seeming to be a tad more expensive than elsewhere in the city (and with poor choice), a historical element is that most of the buildings were damaged and rebuilt after the Second World War and during the division of Berlin, this historic square was in the East of the city (USSR / Communist), the square its-self was built in the late 1600s. Staying here during my time in Berlin at the Hilton Berlin in the square, one of the worst parts about my Hilton was the location being in the Gendarmenmarkt, unlike so many big attractions in big European cities, it seems the restauraunt scene and things to do in and around the square is very minimal, it is a wasted opportunity not to include too many bars for alcoholic beverages or coffee just to sit back and admire the beauty of the square. Being gluten-free, one of my biggest difficulties was finding somewhere with the already limited selection to cater to me, which seemed to be a daunting and impossible task. Housing many old and impressive buildings, this is a nice part of the city but other than admiring buildings a lack of things to see, eat and do without a good walk into Alexander Platz, it just is a shame and I can only award two stars based on how impressive the buildings and square is in general albeit it does appear to me, to simply be a wasted opportunity and even slightly a letdown.

Berlin quickly became one of my favorite cities in the world and this place was one of the reasons. The magnitude of the square is insane, I tried to get a picture of all 3 buildings but I failed even when using the panoramic view. I was so in awe with the architecture! The details in each of the buildings, especially the concert hall, are incredible. I had the chance to go into the hall and take a peek of the inside and it's even more extraordinary. They had this cool virtual reality thing that allowed you to feel/see/hear as if you were sitting inside the hall during a concert and it was awesome. Besides this, it's a great spot to people watch. There are several cafes around the square as well as entertainment. I sat in the steps of the concert hall for about an hour looking at some guys playing the chello and the violin. Not too far from them was a guy making huge bubbles while some kids danced and played around. It was beautiful and it made me feel extremely grateful to be present in that moment. I'd say its def. a must see while you're in Berlin!

The Christmas market at Gendarmenmarkt is absolutely magical. Bundle up, grab a hot glühwein and an enormous gingerbread cookie, and enjoy!

A gorgeous part of town with a blend of old and new buildings and lots of places to eat and drink. I love this area of Berlin :-)

There are very elegant and grand buildings in this square for sure, and they light up at night! Definitely check it out. There's a French building, a German one, and the concert hall. There's also a cathedral with a green top, the first Protestant church built in Berlin.

Even if you're not interested in classical architecture, you'll love the vibe here. Or you'll enjoy the shade under the trees on a hot, sunny day. If you're in Berlin in the holiday season, you should check out the Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt; nov-dec).

the christmas market here is simply magical! i went there two night and it was festive with great food options i had the thin german style pizza and the fresh pasta!

This is Berlin's most elegant square with beautiful architecture and large open spaces where you'll admire three buildings: the German Cathedral, the French Cathedral (Deutscher und Französischer Dom), as well as the Concerthall (Schinkel's Konzerthaus). After your stroll around the area take some time to sit down and enjoy the atmosphere. This is a favorite for locals as there are often festivals held here and the area is surrounded by nice hotels and restaurants.

All I know is that this is where a portion of the movie "Run Lola Run" was filmed! That was enough for me to visit and visit we did! We took pictures of me running across the square, just because this was once in a lifetime and it counted! I encourage you to do the same and keep it as our little secret.

This square is nice to visit! It was first used as market (Linden-Markt) and later named to Gendarmenmarkt which means "cuirassier regiment Gens d'Armes". The square houses Berlin Konzerthaus, French and German Cathedrals. Mentioned building's architecture is beautiful! There is a statue of Germany's poet Friedrich Schiller too. This place was busy and atmosphere was nice.

The Gendarmenmarkt is a square in Berlin, with three distinctive buildings on site: the French Cathedral, the German Cathedral, and the Konzerthaus (under construction as of July 2014). During the holiday season, the square hosts one of Berlin's most popular Christmas markets, which we unfortunately weren't able to see as we visited earlier this month. Overall, it's a nice area to visit, walk around, shop, eat, and people watch.

When we stay at the Hilton it is only a short walk across the road to this spectacular market. Only one of a few where you have to pay to enter the small charge is worth it and the Market is one of the best in Berlin./ The smells of mulled wine. Chestnuts, spices, perfume, burning logs and cooking sausages fill the air and my mouth is watering just thinking about them. Lots to buy, lots to try and many items in which to imvest. Stage shows and singing are happening at regular intervals. You gotta go !!!

Perfect for those who like old buildings and already walked down Unter den Linden from Alex to Brandenburger Tor. Nice restaurants around. If you manage to get into the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, try the paternoster lift.

Best Christmas Market in Berlin is held here. It can cost money to get in - €1 or so. It's only payable when it's very busy and it is worth it - the stalls are full of delicious German goodies and very cool gifts, lots of them real works of art. It's often very cold in December in Berlin, but luckily there is lots of Glühwein on offer all over the market!

A beautiful area of Berlin and the twin churches are beautiful. Look down and you see the floor that Lola was filmed running across in Run Lola (lola rennt). A very touristy area so surrounding restaurants and cafes are priced acordingly. Go later in the early evening as the sun goes down and take your time wandering around the local streets.

I, for once, think that the best way to appreciate the Gendarmenmarkt at its splendor is by taking a stroll with someone you care for, dog or person, in a cold night, when there is no one around. It's just heavenly. It does feel like France a bit, because of the street lamps that scarcely dim the square but confer a light hue of yellow to the marble building.

The most beautiful place in Berlin, Gendarmenmarkt is the heart of this magical city and unforgettable. Between two cathedrals and the concert hall there is a really great picture

Boy, did we get lucky! During our visit to the Reichstag, the audiotour mentioned an exhibit on the Path to German Parliamentary Democracy at the German Cathedral (Deutscher Dom) in the Gendarmenmakt. The next day, we happened to be in that area, so we stopped in and found that we could get a free, 30-minute personal tour from a historian, Johan Schmidt. Wow! He was incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful and eager to engage. We went on for well over an hour, discussing events beginning in 1848, through Bismarck, the Wilhelms, von Hindenburg, Hitler, Adenauer, Brandt, Schmidt, Merkel, the roles of political parties past and present, and even related events in Poland, Ukraine, Russia and the United States. We were sorry we had an appointment and had to break off the discussion! It was definitely the high point of our visit to Berlin.

Very beautiful place.. maybe one of the most beautiful squares in Berlin. December is the best time to visit while there is the Christmas market and you can either bye a lot of nice staff or can enjoy a hot wine (gluhwine) and eat a traditional curry-wurst..That's the German way..

Berlin's most beautiful square is certainly the Gendarmenmarkt. The German Cathedral (Deutscher Dom) comprises the southern area of the Gendarmenmarkt while the French Cathedral (Französischer Dom) is on its northern side. The doomed towers of both cathedrals have been designed by Carl von Gontard and there are sometimes stunning views on the square's silhouette depending on the ambient light conditions. The Concert Hall (Konzerthaus) was build in the middle of the square by Karl Friedrich Schinkel one of Germany's famous architects during the early 19th century. There is always a lot of people and musicians around the square and many good or even excellent restaurants are nearby. There is for instance Lutter & Wegner, Borchardt in the Französische Straße, Chef Kolja Kleeberg's VAU in the Jägerstrasse and the Restaurant Fischers Fritz in the Regent Berlin in the Charlottenstrasse, which was awarded with two Michelin stars. Fassbender & Rausch Chocolatiers are offering fine chocolades and the antiquarian Düssel displays antique prints, mostly views of the old Berlin but one can also find original Piranesis for example. Sometimes I stay in the Hilton Gendarmenmarkt and enjoy the view from the room or from the breakfast restaurant upon German Cathedral and across the square. Only a few steps from the Gendarmenmarkt is the Galery Lafayette and other attractions of the famous shopping street Friedrichstrasse. Unter den Linden avenue would be also pretty close.
