Sarinah Mall, on M.H. Thamrin is Indonesia’s first modern department store and skyscraper. Inaugurated on August 15, 1966, it was a visionary project initiated by President Soekarno to promote domestic products and support the nation’s economic growth. The mall’s name honors Sarinah, Soekarno’s childhood caregiver, reflecting his deep respect for her influence in his life .
Constructed with Japanese war reparation funds, Sarinah introduced Indonesians to modern retail experiences, featuring the country’s first escalators, air-conditioned shopping spaces, and electronic cash registers.
Over the decades, Grand Indonesia and the Pakuwon Malls have overtaken Sarinah. However, revitalisation commenced a few years ago to position it as a food & beverage destination.
