"Fuglen is much more than just one of Oslo’s best spots for coffees. As well as its Universitetsgata location, Fuglen has also expanded to include two locations in Tokyo. All three of its cafes follow the same formula, mixing coffee in the day and cocktails in the evening with the option to experience and purchase midcentury Norwegian furniture. Alongside its Oslo flagship and Japanese locations, Fuglen also roasts its own coffee with a roastery in central Oslo and another in Tokyo."

Where to Eat in Tokyo According to the Owner of Wise Sons Deli - AFAR

"A Norwegian import with cozy midcentury furnishings and a homey vibe that doubles as a fantastic daytime coffee shop and a lively cocktail bar at night. Standout drinks include the Scandinavian Negroni made with aquavit over a fresh-cut ice cube." - Danielle Walsh

We got a double latte and a hot chocolate. This coffee shop was once featured in the Times magazine and I see why. The drinks were refreshing and really good. The inside of the cafe is quite warm so I picked the outside with a breeze. Seats are limited and a bit small. When I went the roads were blocked off due to construction as of 3.7.2025, overall the drinks were great and the cafe was a nice place

Google
New York Times Top-1 Place for Coffee turned out to be a simple cafe-place with a normal coffee but really comfy armchairs. Cold brew was good, but matcha watery. Regarding other basic human aspects, like food and drinks, it is a normal ordinary coffee place. Don’t really have anything bad not incredibly good to say.

Google
We came for a small breakfast and coffee. Ordered the ham and cheese sandwich, waffle with strawberry jam, and cinnamon bun. To drink an iced mocha and latte. Lots of seating outside and minimal inside(mostly bar seating). The cafe was cool, retro vibes. Food was good and drinks as well!

📍Fuglen café is a vibrant spot that’s always bustling with people. The moment you approach the café, you’ll notice it is fully packed and busy, a popular choice for many in the area. Despite the crowds, the atmosphere remains relaxing, inviting you to settle in and unwind whether you’re alone or with friends. One of Fuglen’s best features is its variety of seating options. You can sit outside, enjoying the fresh air, or find a cozy nook inside. The café is designed thoughtfully with different kinds of seats, so whether you prefer a chair, a bench, or a comfy sofa, you’ll find something that suits your mood✨. Inside, the hum of conversation and the clinking of cups blend into a background that manages to feel lively but never overwhelming. The café’s careful arrangement means that even on busy days, it is possible to relax, get comfortable, and enjoy your drink💕. The flexibility in seating makes it easy for everyone to find a spot to their liking, whether you’re coming in to read, chat, or simply watch the world go by. The staff at Fuglen deserve a special mention. They truly contribute to the positive environment. Every time you interact with them, you’re greeted warmly and with a genuine smile💕. They seem happy to help and always make guests feel welcome, which is a bright spot in any customer experience. Even when the café is full and the line is long, they maintain their friendliness and cheerful attitude, adding to the overall appeal of the place✨. As someone who is a big fan of matcha latte , you might approach Fuglen with high expectations. But, the matcha latte🍵 here is a bit of a letdown. The drink arrives looking nice, but the taste is much thinner than hoped for, not strong, and lacking the robust, earthy flavor that makes a great matcha latte memorable. It feels mild, almost diluted, missing that intense matcha kick that you might crave. Another issue is the size of the latte. For the price you pay, the portion is noticeably small compared to other cafés. It doesn’t quite match up to expectations, especially in such a busy and renowned coffee spot. When you asked for your latte to be made extra warm, the staff listened, but unfortunately, the drink was still on the cold side😑. Despite a few letdowns on the drink front, there’s a sweetness about the place itself, the welcoming staff, the comfortable variety of seats, and the way people gather in groups, alone, or with loved ones. The smiles from the staff are genuine, and the options for relaxing are plenty. Fuglen remains a friendly, busy hub where you can find your own little spot, even if the matcha isn’t quite as strong or warm as you hoped. The warmth of the people, more than the temperature of the latte, leaves a sweet impression on your day🌸.

Google
The place is the hottest social coffee shop in Oslo. The service is a bit slow but friendly. They could improve the logistics to make it faster (queue management, water and caps placement blocks the way). Coffee is very good.

I’ve been a fan of this coffee business and brand since long time. The story of how Einar found and grew his business and the brand until today is just amazing and inspiring. I finally made a visit to their Oslo store in an early morning Wed,2nd and the experience I had was amazing. Coffee, the team who works there, the food and the store deserve a 5 ⭐️. Thank you and I will definitely come back again to this place

Google
Good quality coffee and nice staff. Bought two bags of beans as well. Strongly recommend for white and macchiato! Hot chocolate from Guatemala was just amazing!!! Definitely should try!!!!

Google
Got matcha upon recommendation from someone who told me Hakone was mid. They accidentally gave me dairy instead of oat milk, but promptly fixed when asked. Still, this kind of error can be dangerous to others, so please be careful! The matcha was in fact elite, 10/10 would return!

Yelp
Norwegian for "The Bird" Fuglen is a triple threat of all-day vintage store, Coffee by day and Cocktail Bar after dark. Founded in 1963 and constantly busy it is once inside that guests will notice everything from obscure furniture to metal signs while Baristas pull shots of good Espresso to make a variety of Lattes and more. Offering a limited selection of Baked Goods, whether they are made on-site uncertain, fans of School Bread will find Fulgen's lacking moisture in comparison to W.B. Samson while the Kanelboller also falls a bit short, though it is sweeter than most. Improving with Pain au Chocolat, a good break overlying the honeycomb interior with two lines of Chocolate, Fuglen's Chocolate Chip Cookie is pure nostalgia thanks to a crisp rim and soft center beneath flecks of Sea Salt.

Yelp
The best coffee I've had in Norway, which is a land of great coffee. We've come early in the AM and had a quiet, contemplative experience. Midday it's more chaotic and the place is getting rundown over the years as it becomes busier, IMO. Servers are friendly and helpful.

Yelp
This place is a total vibe. Good drink selection and super nice staff. The drinks are amazing and anything from basic looking. It's large has multiple rooms where you can sit relax and get work done if needed.

Yelp
Cute Coffee & Cocktail shop- get Caffeinated and/or Drunk, whatever your day calls for, and I like that haha... Gentleman behind the counter was kind & helpful, plenty of seating space that included knooks and crannies to tuck yourself into... very much my kind of vibe x

Yelp
Smooth Cup of Coffee at this cafe near the museum. Seats outside, really wonderful on a sunny day. Excellent mid century modern furniture inside....

Yelp
The food and drinks are definitely overrated. The service was super nice though. Not worth the hype.

Yelp
What's better than a coffee shop that eventually turns into a bar at night? I really don't think anything, but Fuglen is just that place. Sadly I didn't stay for any of the bar action, but I did meet a friend here for coffee and really thought this place was rather charming. First cool fact is apparently the owners/management run a furniture business of sorts as well? You can buy the furniture you sit on and use! Even lamps were up for grabs. Gotta say, the chairs were comfy too. The bar/coffee shop is rather long and narrow with the bar being in the middle, well at least the coffee shop bar. I got to the counter and ordered a cafe mocha which was around five bucks USD which I didn't think was bad considering how expensive Norway is. I just really enjoyed the vibe here. Friendly patrons. Friendly staff. Nice, chill vibe. My friend and I chatted and caught up for hours it seemed. Had a great local feel to it. If I was a local, I would for sure come here. The coffee was good. The people were nice. I'm not sure what else you could ask for really. Definitely a fan.

Yelp
The drinks here are pretty bad if you're comparing it to a true cocktail bar. The only great thing about this place is that they have free wifi and comfortable seating, which is good for relaxing those sore traveler legs for a few hours. 3 stars.

Yelp
This place was disappointing, given that they have a location in Tokyo. The chocolate croissant we ordered was stale (we had it in the afternoon). It might have been better if it was warmed up in the oven, but I don't think they offer that. The mocha was just okay, more like chocolate milk than a mocha, and the interior was not that great. Kind of dark and old-timey and retro, which was not that exciting compared to the modern aesthetic of most Scandinavian coffee houses.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots for coffee, tea and cocktails! Lovely space with vintage design ( you can buy everything ) with seating both inside and outdoors. Once a week or so they arrange happenings like tastings, different food themes( Oysters, Hot Dogs etc) . Maybe the best selections of coffee beans in town as they have beans from the best roasters in town like Tim Wendelboe, Supreme Roastworks, kaffa and occationally from Las Cabras in Aarhus, The Barn in Berlin and other great roasters around the world.

Yelp
I enjoyed the outdoor area of Fuglen quite a bit. There was tons of seating available and plenty of drink options. The interior had a very classic vibe to it which might bode well for some - for me it was nothing awe inspiring, but more than fine. I had an iced mocha which was pretty tasty, and was able to enjoy the nice breeze outside of their store front.

Yelp
Interesting cocktails with a nice vibe. I stopped by with two friends on a Friday evening around 10:30 PM, and it wasn't overly crowded (there were people, but we were still able to secure outdoor seating). We ordered many different drinks, my favorites of which were the refreshing Life's a Birch (birch leaf infused vodka, honey syrup), the tasty but not too sweet Rhubarb Syrup (rhubarb, rum, campari), and the Smack My Bees Up (aquavit, whiskey, ginger, wood sorrels!). We also tried some of their Norwegian sake, which they took the time to explain to us. I found it to be not as smooth or sweet as Japanese sake, but I thought it was worth trying. We sat inside on the nice couch area as well, and it's a comfortable seating area with music playing not too loudly. I'd definitely return here for drinks if I came back.

Yelp
My husband and I love the whole experience of Fuglen. Great, great coffee and pastries for the daytime but we love the flexibility the storefront has as it transforms into a bar at night. We've been to the one in Tokyo as well and the interior along with the drinks are very consistent. One of our favorite cafes - we hope they'll open one up in NYC!
google avatar

Hester M.

Yelp
Definitely Oslo's cosiest café! Went there 4 times in 6 days! Very expensive, but a great vibe and good drinks. Not too crowded, which is nice!
google avatar

Yelp
Not sure why people giving bad reviews. Really nice cafe with excellent coffee and a great vibe. Cappuccino is fantastic (as a double espresso) and the cakes are great too. Recommended for people into good coffee and a good atmosphere. Ps. The tea was very good too served in a lovely little teapot :-)

Yelp
I've only been here during the day but I would love to come back at night and have a cocktail because Fuglen is quite possibly one of my new favorite haunts. Great coffee and I love their outside seating, it sits on quite a busy streets but on a sunny day this place is just amazing. It checks all my boxes for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely place to relax and pass the time with coffee and/or cocktails. Also appreciated the attention to making cocktails and coffee. I got a gimlet and a cortado and both were delicious. Friendly service and ample seating.
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
So very cool interior for a hopping espresso bar. Students and professional were all sipping espresso and coffee. Worth a trip and worth your money. Sit and enjoy a great cup of coffee.
google avatar

Shreya S.

Yelp
Fuglen is an okay coffee place. The interior is really cute and cozy, plenty of room to work on a laptop or sit on a couch with friends and chat. I would've liked to come back for cocktails but didn't have enough time during my trip to Oslo. The drinks themselves were just okay, nothing exceptional. Prices are about par with other places in Oslo, definitely on the more expensive side. Overall, not a must-see, but if you need a coffee and are in the area then Fuglen is fine.

Yelp
I flew to Oslo so I could check out Fuglen. Not quite but it was on my agenda and in my planner. I didn't stumble upon it by accident. Maybe I wasn't quite getting the whole Fuglen-thing but I guess I don't quite understand what all the hype is about. Sure, it's very Scandinavian and kind of pretty and comfortable in its own way but the coffee was just okay and the place is a bit cramped and small. I wouldn't go out my way to check it out again. Maybe it's one of those things that only a few locals and bands of Japanese girls get excited about. I don't know. Been there; done it. Moving on.

Yelp
Shoot me now cafe lovers of Oslo, but I didn't like this place. I headed here with some friends after hearing it was super chic and cool and had a 60s/70s vibe to it. Cool, right? Not so much. My first problem was that this place was anything but cozy. Sure, it had some brown and orange couches that fit the styling of the place, but the rest of the cafe had old-fashioned diner looking bars without backs. These types of seats may appeal to people who plan to spend 10 minutes in the cafe sipping on a cappuccino, but for people looking to enjoy an hour or more...this is anything but ideal. Or comforting. And does anyone even work here? There were so many piles of dirty dishes all over the place that it looked like the cafe was manned by no one. When we finally found ourselves seats near a table, we had to personally clear out loads of coffee mugs and glasses just to have room to sit our teas and beers. This is not okay by me, especially in a place that is super tiny (as Fuglen was). The size of this place leaves something to be desired. I don't mind small cafes if they attract a small customer base. But this place doesn't. And the space in between one room to the next is so small that the poor people sitting on the diner barstools got a nice feel-up of my butt each and every time I managed to squeeze by. As for food and drinks...it was just fine. The scones and apple and cinnamon muffins look to be courtesy of the one and only Åpent Bakeri. Obviously this was a good thing. I ordered an Aass Fatøl bottle which costs 49kr (blahhh....). But it was good. On my way out I noticed they had Earl Grey Beer...whatever that is. Kind of wish I had tried that instead. Anyways, this crowd was unique. The people there fit the bill of what the cafe looked like it was trying to achieve. Strange hipsters. Which is cool. But all in all, it looked like a bad episode of the Wonder Years. I don't think I'll manage to make it back here, unfortunately. I have seen more appealing decor in Polish milk bars and have met friendlier people at funerals. But props to the worker wearing the Chicago Cubs vintage t-shirt. I thought that was pretty cool. Fuglen receives an extra star on his behalf.
google avatar

Andrea T.

Yelp
The coffee and cocktails are great and the vintage decoration is awesome. You can buy everything laying in there, from a sofa to a lamp. They have events like "oysters and cocktails" and more. Great place! Sometimes a bit crowded tho.
google avatar

Billy D.

Yelp
Don't get too excited. Came for a cappuccino and wasn't impressed with the quality of the drink. However, I bought some beans to bring home with me and I'm really enjoying the crescendo espresso blend right now. The layout is weird (3 separate rooms) which distracts from the old-fashioned furniture they have setup. Not that impressive IMO. They start serving drinks at 20.00 and their cocktail list is creative, but the atmosphere doesn't lend itself to a good drinking place for NOK 120 per drink. Also, the street it's on is pretty boring.
google avatar

Oskar W.

Yelp
Retro decor and amazing coffee. That describes Fuglen perfect. My Americano was one of the best ones I have ever had. I have tried a lot of third-wave coffee shops around the world, but this coffee really stands out. The prices aren't Norwegian at all which surprised me. Much cheaper than in Denmark actually.
google avatar

Anca E.

Yelp
In for the coffee? Checked! In for the design? Checked! Friendly staff? Checked! If you want to taste something different, try their aeropress coffee, might be surprised :)
google avatar

M G.

Yelp
Great design + tasty coffee = a welcome respite from walking all over Oslo. Norwegians are a serious bunch-- and especially serious about coffee and about design. This place is the original-- they've since opened up a place in Japan, and are looking to open a place in NYC. A great place to drool over the furnishings, enjoy a coffee or tea, and put your feet up to relax. The apple muffins are particularly tasty, too.
google avatar

Melissa W.

Yelp
So hipster. So cool. Stop here for a coffee and pastry when it's cold out. The baristas are awesome, so nice. I think I asked a stupid question when I ordered and they didn't laugh me out of the joint. Known for their vintage decor and great coffee. My only complaint is that it's quite small and there were a lot of people there, so may be hard to get a comfy seat.
google avatar

Dominique F.

Yelp
I like the concept of having both coffee and drinks served in one place. I got a chai when I was here with some friends and it was pretty good. Servers were friendly although it took some time to get my chai. Space is a little cramped and there's currently some construction being done outdoors which hinders the possibility of sitting outside and people watching...
google avatar

Linda J.

Yelp
My expectations for this place was high, - and it's nice. Just not as great as I hoped. The cocktails were good, but nothing special. I've heard the coffee is amazing, so this is only for the cocktail bar.
google avatar

Joachim B.

Yelp
More or less mandatory if you are in Oslo. Excellent coffee and drinks. Furniture and decorations are classic Norwegian design icons. Not the best place if you're hungry though - as their selection of food is sparse.
google avatar

Tucker M.

Yelp
Tried a different drink here every morning we were in Oslo and decided that they execute a macchiato with particular style. We like to experiment with coffee places about as much as possible, but after we went to Fuglen, we were happy to just keep going back every day. The pastries deserve a mention too, with the chocolate croissant doing exactly what a chocolate croissant should do. In short, loved it. Thanks Fuglen.
google avatar

Cameron P.

Yelp
Terribly unfriendly staff. Their coffee is good, but it isn't life changing. The location isn't the best for sitting out in the sun either.

Steve B.

Yelp
We made a late stop here on the way back to our apartment and were thoroughly impressed with the atmosphere, seating and general ambience of the place. I asked if they had dessert (which they did not) but the bartender offered a "dessert-like" drink which he convinced me to try. The mixologist was visiting from Tokyo Japan and I must say the drink he had concocted which included soy milk was excellent. Not at all heavy, but with a unique light flavor. The service was good and we would recommend this as a place to stop by for drinks with friends.

Brandon L.

Yelp
Great little place, a small gem in the city center. Kind of pricey but very good cocktails and decent coffee.

Rory S.

Yelp
I stopped in briefly for an ekte chai [real chai], and watched as my barista made a work of art. I don't mean it was beautiful to look at, but the taste was simply the best chai I have had anywhere. I would call myself a chai veteran. I make my own, experiment with spice blends or different kinds of milk, and always try both a regular chai tea and a chai latter wherever I travel. Most places add something to sweeten the deal, be it honey, sugar, or syrup. I don't mind mild sweetness, but some places take it to the dessert drink extreme, and it just leaves me feeling sick. Ekte chai at Fuglen lacks this artificial sweetness, but from the first sip, my tastebuds were awakened to the natural sweetness from the freshly ground spices. I would compare this to eating a carrot - if you avoid desensitizing your tastebuds with sugary things, a carrot [and some other root vegetables] will taste sweet. Definitely the same concept at work here. A perfect balance of cardamom, cinnamon, and I definitely tasted a little clove. The location itself is very cozy, some might call it cramped but just find a corner, sink into your little nook and savor whatever delicious concoction takes your fancy. You will never want to leave. I cannot speak to the cocktail bar element as I have only visited during the day, but if the standards are anything like day life at Fuglen, you're in for a made-with-love treat.
