3.5 stars. ’ve been wanting to try Flip Sigi forever and my expectations were quite high as I kept seeing the rave reviews. A few weeks ago, the stars aligned, and I was finally in this neck of the woods and was able to check them out. The restaurant has a very cool, hip vibe befitting their location in the west village. The décor, furnishings and staff are eclectic and very welcoming.
I knew beforehand that the menu showcased Filipino fusion type dishes. I opted for their Filipino Rice Bowl, Dan Dan Noods and an order of Nice Buns.
The Filipino Rice bowl has sweet longanisa (sausage), garlic fried rice and a fried egg. It also came with a toasted pan de sal (bread). Surprisingly, I was a bit underwhelmed by this dish. The longanisa meat had nice texture and char from the grill but was kind of dry. The garlic fried rice smelled heavenly but tasted kind of bland. And the pan de sal, while nicely toasted, could have benefited from some butter. I wished this dish had some kind of sauce/crema or spicy vinegar or atchara (pickled veggie) to help elevate the flavor profile a bit.
Luckily, we fared better with the Dan Dan Noods. This dish had both ground beef and longanisa meat on top of ramen noodles and was topped with a fried egg. I liked that you get both beef and pork meat, and the noodles were nice and springy. It also had quite a bit of heat but not overwhelmingly spicy.
The Nice Buns were essentially a Pork belly bao. It was drenched in a sweet and tangy saucy and had two pickles along with the pork belly. It was kind of small in size but tasted good.
The whole meal was okay and the food was good, but I think I was expecting it to be mind-blowing (which it wasn’t). Probably my expectations were too high coming here; I dunno. Or maybe I ordered the wrong dishes? Or came on an off day?
