"Beyond being one of the more perfect independent grocery stores around, Fairway is the perfect New York cross section: You'll see young families, old ladies in fur coats, students looking for good food at good prices, and just about every New York "type" you can think of. This outpost is almost open 24 hours (6am-1am)."

Don’t take me wrong, this Fairway branch has great variety of products and great quality. This 3* go for the hot bar, where the quality is a rocky mountain. I bought beef stew and yellow rice yesterday. At my office, I realized the sauce had disappeared, the beef was not edible -I cut not cut it with my knife because it will break apart into pieces- it was old over- boiled beef. The after taste was disgusting. I took it back and after talking to three staff members only the first one acknowledge that they had to remove it from the hot bar. The Manager, Christian, was very disrespectful and told me to go the MD if I felt sick! I have already written a feedback note to the company and I’m not planning to come back. No apology was provided.

Shopping at Fairway is a new experience for me. Recently my OTC benefits changed. So here I am shopping at Fairway. This location is spacious with so much variety of products. Their meat department is amazing. The fresh coffee selection is also impressive. The staff at the meat and coffee departments were so friendly today. This is now a go to market. My organic eggs were quite the buy, this morning. Highly recommended!

Google
Visited just once for a little shopping as a tourist. Encountered a terrible experience lastly - completely ignored by a casher although she had looked cheerful with all other customers in front of me in line. But, to me, no greeting, no smile, no eye contact, no reading out the total price and, of course, no thank you. Learned interesting Social Studies from a racist?

Despite its high price point, adore this store. Watch for sales! Some great deals. It annoyed me that their French bread prices went up, but I still buy it. Unfailingly helpful and friendly staff. I am proud to support this business.

Google
Fairway market has had a cafe upstairs for years! Every time I stop in it’s always a different but wonderful experience! This time the beef burger was fantastic! Grass fed beef perfectly cooked and garnished! Simple yet compelling! Kinda wish they would install banquets around the perimeter to warm the space up and make it more comfortable! So happy fairway has overcome the effects of Wall Street miss handling!

Google
I used to love Fairway, but now it's more or less a normal grocery store in terms of product selection. (Although still better than many New York markets.) The service is very inconsistent. The cafe staff are friendly and the customer service agents sometimes floating around are wonderful, but the checkout staff are clocking it. Do you enjoy bagging your own groceries? Then you'll have a synergistic relationship with the cashiers who seem to enjoy watching you bag them. Will I keep going? Yes. Sadly. I prefer TJs down the street, but it's closer than Morton Williams and I apparently prioritize convenience.

Google
One of my favorite places to visit when I am in that area. During the spring and summer, the flower selections are amazing but quite pricey. Given their location most of the items are pricey but my favorite is the bakery department - their selection never disappoints me. The line moved quickly, but I expected it to be at 11am. Overall a nice little market.

Yelp
They have everything you need. I would have given them a 5 rating, but I had to have my purchases delivered (too heavy for me to carry). They told me it would take between 1-2 hours. I had an appointment in 3 hours that was fine. Didn't come. Called to check. Said on way. Came as I was walking out the door. I will give them more time next time I go, but it was kind of stressful.

Yelp
Once upon a while ago....Fairway was a good place to shop. The prices and the quality -- think produce -- were good, certainly cheaper and more plentiful than other fancier stores. Then...Fairway was taken over by a corporation and everything went steadily downhill. The quality worsened, the staff was demoralized and the prices increased and sale offerings first disappeared and then were reinstated, but became meaningless. Of course, to be fair, Trader Joe's opening two very short blocks away, contributed to Fairway's distress. TJs is not always better but it is often cheaper, and certainly has staff that are visible everywhere and who drop everything to help customers....this being a policy I applaud. However, if you are going to stay in business, when a competitor with deep pockets appears, you need to reassess how you manage a store. Fairway's management has learned nothing in the interim, it should have.

Yelp
My most recent experience at Fairway was ok. I was able to purchase all of the vegetables that I wanted, all of the fruit that I wanted, and even the fish that I wanted. They have great deals on chopped red onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, sprouts, and shishito peppers. The bagged apples are the best because you scan them and don't have to weigh them. I was also happy that I was able to pick out the octopus salad and a nice package of smoked salmon. I even found a Barbie-themed soda that I purchased in four cans. The only thing that I didn't like about my experience was that the woman who was helping me out at the register had been short and rude to me. She didn't have any patience for my questions and when I wanted to take one thing out of my cart she huffed at me. Overall the products that I was able to purchase were really good, and I enjoy going to Fairway, but I wish the employees could be a little nicer there.

Yelp
My favorite grocery store in the city. When I'm in New York I stay at 76th and Broadway so this is so close. A beautiful produce department, cheese department, all basic groceries and my favorite... the bakery. Open late this is a great place to stop off for a snack. My fave is the bakery and the cookies. Perfect NY pastries and baked goods. Join the Fairway club and there are discounts when you check out too.

Conscience C.

Yelp
Just when it couldn't get worse, Fairway "updated" their produce section. Greens have gone missing and the ones that are there looked old and stale. I asked to speak to a manager and they said the produce manager goes home at 2pm and there is no one there. It's almost as if they want to go ghetto and drive their client base away

Kurt W.

Yelp
Poor customer service and nothing but Hispanic that can't speak English. The manger is rude and fussy. Expensive items and low variety of choices. Theres also clear favoritism and racism of your not a Hispanic female.. avoid avoid

Westy P.

Yelp
Wow. This place has really and I mean really gone dooooooooown hill! Selection merger compared to what it was and what it could be. Lines can be very long and incompetently managed. Sad. Very sad. It was once upon a time a great place.

Richard A.

Yelp
I have been shopping at this store for 20 years. Today as I rang up my groceries in the self-checkout, an attending clerk decided to micromanage how I organized my groceries, ultimately calling someone over to "help me" and he began rifling through my bags. As I stood there and watched him investigate, I finally said "What are you doing?" He said "She thinks you might have been overcharged for something." I told him I was capable of checking out myself and he continued. I asked him to void the sale, went down to Whole Foods and bought everything on my list (including an item Fairway didn't have.) The Fairway total: $77. Whole Foods: $51. Even paying for the subway back and forth, I saved $20. Looking on the bright side, this annoyance taught me a valuable lesson. Goodbye, Fairway.

Bruce E.

Yelp
This place is described online as a "grab and go" convenience outlet for food, but their checkout system is so chaotic and broken that the only patrons who can reasonably "grab and go" might be would-be thieves and shoplifters. Some of the self-checkout terminals that handle cash purchases seem to be broken, and at least one or two of the remaining ones only handle credit card purchases, leading to lots of confusion and frustration (I was buying two lousy little items for lunch and simply gave up and exited, leaving them there). The organization of customer lines for the actual clerk-manned registers (of which there are too few) are like a train-wreck in progress, as well. So yes, there's lots of selection there, and the food is fine, but paying for it and actually enjoying it are more of a challenge than anyone without a lot of time to waste may wish to engage in. And I understand that West Side Market is coming back into the neighborhood, a little bit north of this location -- that competition might force the management here to shape the place up, or -- who knows? -- maybe close the place.

Yelp
I would lie if I didn't say I do 95% of my shopping in Jersey at the biggest box store of them all; BUT Fairway is a regular haunt for me for sale fruit. their price points aren't low, but neither is the quality of their stuff. I stock up on whatever is on sale that I like and am never disappointed with quality. also, every person working there has been very friendly and helpful.

Ryan G.

Yelp
God forbid you try to order anything from that makeshift meat / seafood counter they have. You'll experience a level of incompetence previously unknown. I can list a litany of issues with this place however the biggest maybe this locations overall uncleanliness. It's dirty regardless of what time of day you go. They have some decent sales but you're better off with Citarella or Trader Joe's.

Maury M.

Yelp
Fairway is the best local market in NYC. It has changed a lot since ShopRite bought it several years ago. It still has great produce and organic products. It has the best selection of products in NYC. It's the only place in NYC where you can get everything you want!

Gary P.

Yelp
What has happened to my former favorite grocery store on the upper west side ? The choices seem less but still plentiful and the prices seem higher !! What no fresh rye bread for slicing ? stood at the deli counter for 5 minutes without service until the employees finished their conversation !! the customer service and friendliness are lacking and noticeably different to the former pleasant employee service that I was used to and enjoyed prior to the Shop Rite takeover. I know shop rite controls New Jersey markets and actually are quite good stores but either the manager of Fairway Broadway and 74th Is lacking in leadership or the ability to stress to employees that a smile, a concern in helping customers should be their upmost responsibility. With choices like Citarella, Zabars & Trader Joe's just steps away and price points better or relatively close I'll take my business elsewhere until Fairway smiles return Highly disappointed

Yelp
Oh, how we loved the Fairway Market. I'm writing this as a visitor, not a resident, so my view of the market may be different than that of someone who lives in the area and shops there regularly. We were staying nearby and stopped at Fairway every day for something: fruit and snack to take back to our hotel, drinks. We spent some time walking around, checking things out, and the variety of offerings is quite impressive. Prices seemed a bit high but I don't have another NY grocery to compare them to so maybe they are in line with other outlets. The hours were convenient for our comings and goings, the check outs were quick. Overall, a great neighborhood market.

William S.

Yelp
I'm a dog owner but I find it very unsanitary that the Fairway on the UWS allows dogs in the store. Recently witnessed a dog licking food while it's owner was pulling items from a shelf. The manager said he can't enforce customers from bringing their dogs. Deplorable. Should contact 311

Louis P.

Yelp
I just left the store in Murray Hill/Kipps Bay. I approached the deli. The person there said " you missed me, I'm closed" tomorrow he will not have Job with us.

Shadow L.

Yelp
I used to love the prepared broccoli rabe even though it's expensive. But it has sand in it now, meaning they didn't bother washing it before cooking it. Zero stars.

Adam I.

Yelp
I have not been in here for a while, I will never be returning here again. I was overcharged for weighted items by the first cashier in the self-service line. This was not the first time. I decided to return the items and instead was charged again for my items by customer service. It is quite apparent that the employees here have contempt for the customers here. Do yourself a favor and don't patronize this market. It has the worst prices and customer service in the area.

Erica C.

Yelp
If you haven't had a history with Fairway, you won't understand how downhill they've gone. It's been my go to store for 20 years but that's quickly changing. Yes, there is still a good selection. however, prepped foods are just ok because it's all been outsourced. The store is dirty and the employees are mostly "calling it in". If there is any management, it is haphazard and has no interest (or knowledge) in maintaining the level of quality the biz upheld before it was sold. Classic story: Privately owned business declines after selling to a corporation. My days as a regular customer are over. Older.

Echo L.

Yelp
The best thing about this market it their "wayfinder" named Jacob. I'm putting up a pic of him that I snapped. He is truly amazing. The kindest and most helpful store attendant in New York. He's engaged. He's positive. He has a can-do, uplifting attitude. If only every store in New York had a Jacob. The world would be a better place. I hope Jacob's performance is recognized and appreciated and that he gets promoted and promoted and eventually becomes the CEO of this company.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't reviewed Fairway on the West Side. I lived two doors behind this location for years. You have a combination of a grocery store and a Whole Foods type store all in one location. I used to bring a huge bag and stock up on items. I find the isles are easy to navigate, the stock and floor help are friendly and knowledgeable. They have all of the popular brands, plus the bakery, fish, meats, and dairy department. All have fresh food and knowledgeable employees. They have both regular and organic foods. They have a great selection of spices. They have both less expensive items or high end gourmet. Take your choice. I've never had a problem with check out. They have a system and it works. For the most part cashiers are friendly. I don't buy large quantities at this location. For check out you do need to expect a long line if you go at peak times of day. I remember when this was the only Fairway I knew existed. Now I have a huge Fairway on East 86th Street. East Side or West Side I love Fairway all the same!

Flatts F.

Yelp
They sold me rotten chicken and told me they have a none return policy. I asked if I buy more mean and it's rotten do they refuse me again. The guy sheepishly said yes

Bill E.

Yelp
Even for a Shoprite it stinks! Private equity took over, over-expanded and drove the Fairway into bankruptcy. One of the Shoprite collectives purchased 2 (I think) stores, including the Broadway outlet. There really is no fish counter, and the meat counter, well, stinks. Prepackaged meat is average at best. Grocery is limited by space and by selection, and expensive as well. Produce has gotten a bit better - and has gone from truly lousy to just about average. Locals who have the time do alot of their shopping at Trader Joe's. There is talk of a Wegman's coming in on Broadway at 65th - I certainly hope so.

Cuthbert W.

Yelp
I am updating my review because, although some items are still too expensive and can be found at equal quality elsewhere at lower prices, Fairway now has, though it's "Insider" plan, some very good sales on occasion. So I now shop there more regularly again. Though we are fortunate to have many options on the Upper West Side.

Alex F.

Yelp
The only place to get groceries on the upper West side! Fareway has reasonable prices, and still some personalized service so that you can get exactly what you need without having to buy it already prepackaged. One of the services I especially appreciate is the person back in the coffee area who will grind any beans you want into any grind you want. What a nice touch!

John L.

Yelp
Great selection. Clean and well lit location. Wonderful customer service. All of that at New York City prices!

Heather R.

Yelp
I have never been to this site it was real treat considering the set of circumstances that we are all going through with coronavirus in New York City moving into phase 2. I had to be in this area because my friend needed bloodwork up in a specific lab in the area so during my waiting time I went about doing the best I could do. I needed some produce for my household so I Purchased some which all look beautiful. I purchased Huge Italian tomatoes, white cherries, Haitian mangos. And avocados.... the price was not bad all about $35 bucks. Fairway without a doubt were following guidelines for COVID-19, the store was being sanitized as it seemed on a regular basis, and customers and people working following social distancing. I like to complement the staff at this branch they really were working very hard and when I checked out the cashier said thank you with a big smile lovely. Once again thank you to the personnel at this establishment please be safe and healthy.

Kimberly J.

Yelp
Walking around, we decided to drop by Fairway Market. Every corner is packed with fruits, veggies, snacks, condiments, meats, cheeses, bread, etc. It gets really busy in here. They have a nice organic section. Plenty of variety in here. Prices are reasonable at Fairway, definitely cheaper than the grocery stores I used to go to near my apt (when I lived here years ago). It's cool that they open till 1 am too. Cashiers were quick and friendly enough.

Marie S.

Yelp
Fairway Market is one of the few places that sells vegetarian Tandoor chef frozen meals. I cannot find it at Whole Foods lately - either sold out or they stopped carrying it. So I switched to Fairway Market. I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality at Fairway! They usually have organic fruits & vegetables in stock. The organic Italian parsley & cute rainbow chocolate nonpareils are five stars ! The prices are competitive and I find myself spending less here. Compared to Citarella, it's a bargain. I'm happy Fairway is still in business.

Catherine C.

Yelp
Lost delivery NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. I bought groceries before three in the afternoon. Got a call at 6 saying it was out for delivery. When it didn't show up by 8 I called and was told I could have it at 10 AM the next morning. I had to take a $25 cab ride to pick it up and then replace the perishable items that had been sitting unrefrigerated for over 5 hours. One item was not available and they charged me extra for a more expensive version. I have used Fairway for years but they lost me as a customer today. Horrible treatment.

Buster C.

Yelp
Why do they allow people to bring dogs in that obviously aren't service dogs? 8:30am on a Sunday and I counted three dogs. It's the owners' fault, of course, but Fairway should police this. Service dogs, by the way, are strictly defined as dogs who help people who have a physical handicap. Most are for blind people. Phony "emotional support" dogs are not service animals and don't qualify. Everyone should speak up and confront these selfish people.

Jake W.

Yelp
The market has a great selection of products. But overall it's an ugly old school market with no charm to it. They could make it so much nicer but its a run down space. Also the self-checkout can be a pain to deal with. I am sure they are saving in labor costs buts it become more of a hassle to checkout and they must be losing some money with people not scanning their items. The Fairway Cafe upstairs was a great cafe with excellent food and reasonable prices. Would love if they re-opened it.

Joy G.

Yelp
I have what can only be described as a serious love-hate relationship with the UWS Fairway. Torn. I don't want it to go out of business and be sold off by people who have absolutely no idea how to run grocery stores in today's age of Fresh Direct and InstaCart and expanded the chain without thought and care. But I also have to gird myself each time before stepping foot inside. Shopping here is by no means a relaxing experience, particularly any time before a snowstorm or during the holiday rush. On the one hand, I need this place for its relatively affordable meat and seafood offerings. Trader Joe's has a pretty meager selection and Citarella, while beautiful, bountiful, and empty, is way out of my price range. Whole Foods is similarly prohibitive from a price point of view. I'm also a fan of their weekly coupons even though let's be real, I'm not lugging a 24-pack of Poland Spring water bottles back to my apartment. Plus let's offer something better for the environment. On the other, I have yet to come here where it's not a fire hazard from the sheer amount of people packed into this place. I don't know whether it's an issue of layout or just the popularity but I do know the lines for check-out always get backed up. They should think about setting up a self checkout so that for the people who buy less than 5 items (yours truly), a grocery run doesn't need to have an extra 15 minutes tacked on. Also, the cashiers can be borderline abrupt and rude. You definitely feel like cattle being herded about. The butcher counter is also hit or miss, depending on any given day. I heard they opened a cooking space on the second floor. Yay ... except for that space could have been used for a few of the items on the first floor which would have opened up a lot of the tight corners and made it a more pleasant place. It's definitely a 2.5 but I'm rounding up because of the meat/seafood.

Susan P.

Yelp
Fairway has changed for the worse. I'm judging my opinion on the quality of the poultry, meat, and overall prices. Before Fairway was sold, I always purchased Murray's chicken breasts and thighs. Now, when I look to buy the breasts, a pack of three halves is $18. There is no way chicken should cost that much. So, now I buy Murray's thighs because they are a little cheaper. The date is current on the pack but when eating, they taste very, very old. Or, they taste like the store-brand chicken and very old. They are now selling chicken bones. I see so many senior citizens mulling over these breastbones because they still have some meat on them and are more affordable that the actual chicken pieces. Yes, people buy them to make stock but I can tell these women (especially women) are trying to stretch their money. The quality and pricing of the poultry is just wrong. The meats are astronomical in price. And, why are the packages of Italian sausages so expensive? Sadly, after Westside Market left the UWS, Fairway (Shop Rite) is all we are left with.

Janet W.

Yelp
It's November 2022 & I went to the Fairway at 74th & Broadway, with a friend who loves luxury, after many years. Their prices are shocking, Yes, I know prices are inflation & pandemic-related as well as having alleged supply chain issues. But Fairway has a new owner & they are now a luxury food mart & are behaving like one. They stock every food item possible (as long as they are high-priced.) It used to be a price- & shopper-friendly Upper West Side establishment. Now, it's gone corporate. It's become nothing more than being like the old Whole Foods v.2. It may stay in business but I say, "Take the Fair out of Fairway." I'll never go back there. Never.

M R.

Yelp
the service here sucks. Very few staff members speak English so they are unable to help you find products and generally just guess an aisle inevitably wasting my time. Also, they don't pack, just scan and then leave you to pack your own products, not even starting to pack while the customer pays. I like the variety here but the customer experience could not be worse! There are also no managers visible.

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Best things at Fairway: Dairy section: - french La Fermière yogurts -Temptee cream cheese -supreme brie cheese -bethmal chevre (great cheese section over all) -fairway salsa -fairway chips Frozen section - see frozen tamales and frozen bourekas and blintzes Frozen treats: -We love the yasso chocolate covered froyo bars and -chloes fruit pops Vitamin water is always in stock and $1.69!

Alan P.

Yelp
I'm a Fairway insider, which means I enter my phone number at check out and can get sales items. It rarely works, but at least I notice when it happens. I think many people might not notice. Today, I tried to buy something on sale, and it didn't work. I was told that I had to spend a certain amount to get that particular sale. They showed me the flier. But on the website and app, that requirement was so tiny, I didn't see it. I've been shopping at Fairway for years and lament the current situation. I went instead to Trader Joe where I got the product I needed at the same price that would have been Fairway's sale price. Not only that, I enjoyed TJ's excellent customer service. Customer service and courtesy are non-existent at Fairway.

Stephen B.

Yelp
Hey Fairway. You are a blight on the UWS. I walked by today and you had pallets and boxes blocking up the sidewalk and street from 74th St to 75th St along Broadway. How you get away with this is incredible. I am posting a panoramic picture from today for all to see how neighborly you are. No excuse.

Phil H.

Yelp
We ordered 3 dishes from catering. Alll came as though they had been in the refrigerator overnight with the exception of one. The mac and cheese was just short of frozen and looked about a week old. Fortunately, we had enough time to heat the food before our guests arrived thus the one star for on time delivery. Won't be ordering Fairway catering again.

P Y.

Yelp
Fairway seafood use to top notch fresh. After Covid hit, I have noticed a huge difference. I have bought spoiled fish on 3 occasions ( swordfish, gulf shrimp and salmon) I CANNOT AND WILL NOT waste any more time and money if the fish mongers are lowering standards, or just plain incompetent and lazy. There are plenty of other fish markets in nyc to choose from. And rotten fish that stinks while your in the cab is F unacceptable.

Agnes F.

Yelp
Fairway is no longer what is used to be. It has gone through several owners who have kept the name but not the service and the quality. Fairway stores (UWS and UES) have gone downhill ever since the change in ownership, with no end in sight.

Michael B.

Yelp
VERY HANDY ! My wife and I were staying at the Hotel Beacon straight across the street. Usually I grab my craft beers at a Whole Foods whenever we travel but there was not one within cooee ! We headed over here because I needed a few decent beers in the fridge to tide me over for the next 8 days. The supermarket is huge with a 2nd level where they keep the beer. The selection was large but not as good as I would have liked in the premium end of hazy juicy IPA's. We picked up sourdough bread, fresh squeezed orange juice, Cracker Barrel extra sharp white cheddar, Purely Elizabeth granola, Haagen-Dazs ice cream bars, lactose free milk, bananas, Charmin premium toilet paper ( hotels have lousy toilet paper ), peanut butter & a 4 pack of Bronx Brewery "World Gone Hazy" Hazy IPA. They had a huge charcuterie and a massive roasted coffee bean area where the beans were in barrels. The place was SO BUSY and the other other customers were all in a hurry...like they were on FAST FORWARD. We borrowed a shopping cart to wheel our haul across the street. A security dude challenged us but after I assured him we would return it...he was cool with that ! The first hazy IPA I bought here was pretty lousy...not really a hazy IPA at all. I came back here the next morning and bought another 4 pack of hazy IPA...Captain Lawrence Brewing Co "Jam Juice" Hazy IPA but it wasn't much better. Not the place to buy good quality craft beer I discovered. Still...if you are staying at the Hotel Beacon this joint is darn handy to pick up some day to day essentials !

Yelp
I have lived on the UWS since 1972 and just as long shopped at Fairway. Recently I have been dismayed at their prices and lack of choice of fresh produce that used to be a trademark of Fairway. I shop there twice a month and, not only are many products no longer available, their prices continue to increase to the point of insanity. Today I paid $7.99 for a bag of flour, $11.98 for 4 leeks, $9.99 for a 3 lb. bag of navel oranges, $8.98 for 2 qts. of half & half, $7.99 for a qt. of cream, $7.49 for a small frozen pkg. of green beans, $8.27 for a pkg. of frozen pizza (was around $6 two months ago), etc. Had I gone to Trader Joe's 2 blocks away, the price for any of these items would have been halved (no wonder there are such long lines there and such short ones at Fairway). I think patronizing Fairway budgetwise has pretty much become prohibitive. Can't wait for Morton & Williams to open at 69 & Broadway. Fairway used to be the go-to place to shop, but in recent years it has changed hands a couple of times. It is now owned by Wakefern Food Corp. (the parent company of Shop Rite) and they seem to be trying to milk the situation to the hilt. They charge high-end prices, but they are not high end. The average consumer can no longer afford this place.

Yelp
Do us all a favor and stop calling this store Fairway. It is not. It is Shop Rite of New Jersey. Please take down the awning that reads "Like No Other Market" It is like every supermarket in New Jersey. If I wanted to shop in New Jersey, I would do so. We do not need the booming oldies otherwise known as FAIRWAY RADIO. You are not Fairway in any form. We would like to order cheese from a Cheese Department that sells cheese. We would like to find fresh vegetables and fruit. The bakery is not what it used to be. This is not Fairway.

Yelp
I've gone to this location ever since I moved to the neighborhood in the '80s. What a depressing place...do they beat their cashiers in the backroom to make them so surly? I used to think this was the norm until Trader Joes opened on 72nd. Every trip is a pleasure, especially the checkout. I've yet to encounter a less-than-pleasant, helpful and happy employee there. Fairway - you owe it to your customers to do better. Clearly, it's possible.

Yelp
I have long been an acolyte of Fairway. I loved it because the prices were good and the selection was great. However, in a recent visit, I was appalled at the way the place acted. I never thought I would call the place dishonest, thieves, or fraudulent. It was. I had gone into the produce section on the second floor. I was looking to buy a good cantaloupe. I am a person who actually reads price tags, etc. so I was careful to read the ones they listed. The cantaloupes had a price of $1.69 each. I figured it was a great deal. I was looking for a musk melon, so I put it in my bag. I got to the checkout, and it rang up over $6.00. As an initial matter, this is ridiculous for a musk melon. Second, I showed the manager that the price was $1.69 each. She went to look at the price tag and tried to tell me she didn't see that they were $1.69 each. I went over there and pointed it out to her. Her response? Well, I can't honor that price. In short, they wouldn't honor the price THAT THEY PLACED ON THEIR FOOD. I never fancied Fairway to dishonest thieves. Well, they are...at least for people who actually READ the prices and for those of us who have experience dealing with produce because we come from semi-rural areas. Lest the dishonest folks at Fairway claim I made a mistake? I am posting a photo of the price tag I relied upon. You will notice the word "each" there. An ethical and honorable business would have honored the price tag they placed on their products. Fairway? Apparently not so much.

Yelp
I shop at Fairway for fresh fruit & cut-up fruit when I'm in town (most likely this location) because their produce is (usually) fresh, the price is right, & their outdoor display tempts me every time. However, the aisles feel like a bad game of bumper cars, the lines extended into the already packed aisles, it's always a madhouse. When you (eventually) get to the front of the check-out line, a cashier will yell in a Nu Yawk accent that you swore was straight out of your favorite detective TV show, that, "numba ten, numba ten is OPEN!" Pay attention because dilly dallying is not tolerated here. Before I became familiar with other local grocers, I thought all Manhattan super markets operated with this level of intensity. You might not believe it after shopping here, but there are calm, civilized stores in the city. If you want a real New York experience, skip Times Square & hit up Fairway for a couple necessities; you'll see that the busy denizen doesn't slow down, even to grab a gallon of milk on the way home.
