"The giant rocks coming up from the sand (not to mention the exquisite sunset views) at El Matador make it a favorite for photographers, and many people stage engagement or family photoshoots here. That said, it's usually not too crowded, in part because those same rocks make it difficult to swim and surf—it's really best for picnicking, reading, and enjoying the view. Be sure to pack a blanket and wear tennis shoes, as the parking lot is on a bluff far above the beach, and the walk down can get a bit hairy."

"El Matador is the kind of beach an Angeleno immediately takes you to from the airport. It's a natural beauty—hidden away down a steep staircase with dramatic craggy rock formations that seem to have risen from the Pacific, plus tide pools that offer a glimpse at our undersea friends. If you decide to check them out for photos or simple exploration, make sure to wear water shoes as the rocks can be difficult to navigate. There are zero services or amenities at El Matador—it's a natural wonder. Bring your own beach towels, sunscreen, and picnic gear, and you'll be all set for the day." - Maxwell Williams, Krista Simmons

I spent the last week of December at the beautiful El Matador Beach. The peaceful setting, sea caves, and striking views make it a photographer’s dream. It was a really a beautiful place to see, good vibes, great view, not too crowded, you can find your peaceful time over there. Looking at seashores it’s kind of meditation, such a great view.

Beautiful spot, for a breezy afternoon mid-week. Amazing rock formations amid low tide waves. Just enough steps, split in two sections, for a mild workout to get to the beach. Not recommended for those with physical difficulty walking. Steep incline and steps could be a challenge for some.

There is not a whole lot of parking so come early or I suggest off season! Also, check tide times as you want to see it at low tide. There were many little coves to check out as the tide went out. Several large outcroppings had cave like openings. The water was clear and cold. There were so many vibrant colored rocks on some parts of the shore. We picked a little spot nestled against the cliffside and it was a perfect morning. I loved this beach! It was wild and felt alive. There are a lot of stairs to get down to the actual beach. Portapotties at the parking lot were the only bathrooms.

Gorgeous. Get there in the morning before the crowds. There are stairs,so if you have mobility issues, you won't have access to the beach. The beach has beautiful rock formations and soft sand.

8:42am we did not see the sun shine yet. There was fog on the road. As we Walking down hill , my kids yell "Dolphins!!!!" That was amazing:) it was chilly and windy. Not. A lot of people. We had a great time visiting.

Beautiful beach. Short walk down a hill. 2 nice dirt paths and 2 short sets of stairs with rails. There's one section of beach at the base of the stairs and another section of beach to the right. Cool rock formations in the water. Paid parking. The lot is kinda small but we waited about 5 min and it seems there was a steady flow of people coming in and leaving.

El Matador State Beach, nestled along the stunning Malibu coastline, is a hidden gem that offers a breathtaking escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As one of the lesser-known beaches in the area, it provides a more tranquil and picturesque setting, perfect for those looking to enjoy nature's beauty away from the crowded tourist hotspots. The journey to El Matador is part of the charm. As you wind your way down the scenic Malibu coast, the anticipation builds, and the views of the Pacific Ocean are simply mesmerizing. Upon arriving, you’ll need to navigate a steep path that descends to the beach, but the effort is well worth it. The dramatic cliffs and rocky formations that surround the beach create an enchanting atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. Once you reach the beach, you’re greeted by a stunning landscape of golden sands, rugged rocks, and crystal-clear waters. The unique rock formations and sea caves provide excellent opportunities for exploration and photography, making it a favorite spot for both amateur and professional photographers. The setting is ideal for a leisurely stroll along the shore, where you can take in the natural beauty and perhaps spot some sea life, such as tide pools filled with colorful marine creatures. One of the highlights of El Matador State Beach is its relatively low visitor count compared to other beaches in the area. This makes it a perfect spot for a peaceful picnic, sunbathing, or simply unwinding while listening to the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks. The beach’s secluded feel adds to its allure, providing a sense of serenity that is hard to find in more crowded locations. However, it’s important to keep in mind that El Matador does not have many amenities. There are no lifeguards on duty, and parking can be limited, so it’s advisable to arrive early to secure a spot. Additionally, the steep trail to the beach may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with mobility issues. In summary, El Matador State Beach is a breathtaking destination that showcases the natural beauty of Malibu’s coastline. Its stunning landscapes, serene atmosphere, and unique rock formations make it a must-visit for anyone looking to escape the crowds and connect with nature. Just be prepared for the journey down to the beach and the lack of amenities, and you’ll find yourself rewarded with one of the most picturesque beaches in Southern California. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat or a scenic spot for photography, El Matador State Beach is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Amazing beach experience. Very easy parking on the side road, beautiful weather, lots and lots of dolphin sightings. Sand was soft and lots of room, not very crowded. Lots of proposals, and photo shoots happening while we were there. Sunset was 10/10
