"The Born neighborhood has a bit of an artistic reputation, so it's really no surprise that when it came time to remodel their market, they re-imagined it as a historic and cultural center. The new project was first unveiled in 2013, corresponding with the tricentennial of the Siege of Barcelona—a hugely important date to Catalans, as it represents the end of the War of Spanish Succession and the last time Catalonia was independent from Spain. The market itself is a historic structure, as it was the first Spanish market to be built in the iron-framed, French market style, but an excavation beneath the old floor reveals ruins that date back to medieval times. A permanent exhibition explores life in the city in the early 1700s, and is a great way to dip a toe into the city's complicated and fascinating history. You can also check their website for lectures, music performances, and temporary art exhibitions."

"Bypass the lines at the nearby Picasso museum and stop in at the El Born Cultural Center for a unique look at Catalan history. Enter the massive 19th century market hall to find the archeological remains of 16th century Barcelona. You can admire the vast excavation site for free or take in a guided tour, one of their exhibits or concerts, all highlighting Catalan’s distinct history and culture. Before leaving grab a coffee at its café abuzz with the local hipsters." - Gemma Askham

Showcases El Born's history and an excavated city ruins of the market from 1700's. No tickets needed. Super clean bathroom that's sort of hidden. Good for a walk through.

It is a memorial center and museum dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Barcelona. The site contains the remains of Barcelona’s old streets and buildings, which were destroyed during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714. In 1876, the El Born Market was built here. After the market was closed in 1971, the site was abandoned until archaeological excavations uncovered the ruins of pre-1714 Barcelona. In 2013, to preserve these remains and honor Barcelona’s historical memory, the site was reopened as the Cultural and Memorial Center (CCM). The museum features permanent exhibitions on the Gothic Quarter, the El Born district, the War of the Spanish Succession, and Barcelona’s history of resistance. It also hosts various cultural events, lectures, and workshops.

Title: A Journey Through Time at El Born! Review: Stepping into El Born Center for Culture and Memory was a journey into Barcelona's rich history. On the day of my visit, I was pleasantly surprised to find free entry, making the experience even more enjoyable! The well-preserved archaeological remains from the 17th century truly bring the city's past to life, allowing you to walk through time and imagine what life was like centuries ago. What stood out for me was the detailed permanent exhibition, offering an insightful glimpse into everyday life around 1700. The artifacts and historical displays, combined with the site, made this visit a fascinating dive into Barcelona's cultural memory.

When you are around Gothic Quarter you should definitely make a stop here. The entry is free of charge and you can get to know more about Catalan history and this old building which was used as a market place back in the days. There are also temporary and permanent exhibits, which are not for free all the time. You can also take a guided tour in the archeological site.

Hidden gem in El Born and one of my favourite experiences in Barcelona. Highly recommend the guided tour. Mine was conducted in English and only cost 4 euro. The guide Laura was super friendly! Learnt so much about how this part of the city evolved over the years. Highlight was walking on the archaeological site (medieval ruins) itself. Must do for history buffs!

The site is an interesting spot in the city. Opened in 2013, it features the remains of houses destroyed after the War of Spanish Succession in 1714, which were cleared to make way for a citadel. These well preserved remnants offer a glimpse into the city’s past. The center is set in a beautifully restored market hall from 1876, which adds to the experience. Located in the lively El Born neighborhood, it’s a nice place to visit if you’re interested in history and want to learn more about Barcelona’s heritage.
