"The Born neighborhood has a bit of an artistic reputation, so it's really no surprise that when it came time to remodel their market, they re-imagined it as a historic and cultural center. The new project was first unveiled in 2013, corresponding with the tricentennial of the Siege of Barcelona—a hugely important date to Catalans, as it represents the end of the War of Spanish Succession and the last time Catalonia was independent from Spain. The market itself is a historic structure, as it was the first Spanish market to be built in the iron-framed, French market style, but an excavation beneath the old floor reveals ruins that date back to medieval times. A permanent exhibition explores life in the city in the early 1700s, and is a great way to dip a toe into the city's complicated and fascinating history. You can also check their website for lectures, music performances, and temporary art exhibitions."

"Bypass the lines at the nearby Picasso museum and stop in at the El Born Cultural Center for a unique look at Catalan history. Enter the massive 19th century market hall to find the archeological remains of 16th century Barcelona. You can admire the vast excavation site for free or take in a guided tour, one of their exhibits or concerts, all highlighting Catalan’s distinct history and culture. Before leaving grab a coffee at its café abuzz with the local hipsters." - Gemma Askham

We stumbled upon this amazing place while exploring the surrounding streets and so glad we went in. A spectacular old market building housing fascinating remains of old Barcelona. It's free to wander round the upper level overlooking the old streets and for an extra €3, you can view the exhibition of all the artefacts that were discovered during the dig. A really interesting place.

Came across this museum while wondering in El Born. Thought it looks like a market at first, later found that it was once a market opened in 1876. No ticket is required if you walk around the ground floor. A good one-hour tour if you have passion in archeological theme. The artefacts illustrate the population settlement in 11th century and the significance of the location, near to the river, attracted trades and businesses like leather tanner, etc.

A beautiful museum telling the story of ancient Barcelona with ancient ruins well preserved. There are detailed writings throughout the museum telling the history of ancient Barcelona. It is free entry but you can pay for guided tours. A nice visit if you are in Barcelona.

This 1876 market was to be renovated a few years back, and while going some earthwork to secure the structure, they uncovered the ruins from 14-16th century Barcelona. What followed was a full excavation and preservation of BCNs merchant, craftsman, and artisan quarter. Entry is free and you can walk along the catwalks, looking down into the past to see how the people lived and worked. A paid tour (€4) offers a guided explanation (in multiple languages), extensive exhibits on artifacts pulled from the rubble, and a walk down onto the actual cobblestone streets. It's just a block or so from the Picasso and MOCO museums, the Santa Maria del Mar basilica, the zoo/Cuitadella, and surrounded to boutiques and restaurants. Together, it makes a perfect day of exploring BCNs past.

Very interesting exhibition about the history of the city, with panels, the entry is free to just see the ruins from the above corridors, but the archaeological exhibit and the guided tour are not always available, better check the times and availability if you want to visit.

Title: A Journey Through Time at El Born! Review: Stepping into El Born Center for Culture and Memory was a journey into Barcelona's rich history. On the day of my visit, I was pleasantly surprised to find free entry, making the experience even more enjoyable! The well-preserved archaeological remains from the 17th century truly bring the city's past to life, allowing you to walk through time and imagine what life was like centuries ago. What stood out for me was the detailed permanent exhibition, offering an insightful glimpse into everyday life around 1700. The artifacts and historical displays, combined with the site, made this visit a fascinating dive into Barcelona's cultural memory.
