"The small but mighty onsite restaurant for Dr. Wilkinson’s Resort and Spa in Calistoga, House of Better offers an all-day Southwestern eclectic menu made for snacking, either on the patio, in-room, or at one of the hotel’s two outdoor, geothermal mineral pools. A perfect foil for a hot day in wine country, the fiery chile is celebrated throughout the menu: in nachos, salad dressings, tacos, posole, and even pie. And because pie is always a good idea, the signature apple-chile-cheddar with its crumble topping makes a perfect breakfast or lunch dessert. Tasting flights of dips, salsas, and guacamoles, accompanied by tortilla chips or fresh vegetables, are natural poolside choices. Excitingly, Dr. Wilkinson’s is now available on ResortPass, so you don’t have to stay overnight to get this poolside food experience." - Laura Smith Borrman
"Soak in a Mud Bath Calistoga’s most storied mineral baths are the centerpiece of what has becomeDr. Wilkinson's Hot Springs Resort, fittingly named after a chiropractor from San Francisco. Most visitors still come for the day spa, which is split into two sides, one for men and the other for women. Options for bothinclude mud baths (in a mix of volcanic ash, hot spring water, and peat moss), mineral-water whirlpool tubs, mineral steam rooms, blanket wraps, and massages. Then, of course, there’s “the Works,” a signature treatment that combines all of these into one. This treatmentused to cost less than $5 back in 1952, when Dr. John Wilkinson opened the place. Rumor has it that since then, all that’s changed is the price."
"Anyone who has driven through Calistoga over the last 70 years has likely clocked the hotel's neon sign advertising hot springs and mud baths. This midcentury landmark is fresh off a sassy makeover with offerings that channel its namesake doctor, like arrival prescriptions (essential-oil blends), an updated spa, and rooms that feel more Coachella Valley than Napa (retro mini fridges and pale-pink bathrobes). The new restaurant, House of Better, takes influence from restaurateur Trevor Logan's time in the Southwest, with dishes like roasted green chile flatbread from the wood-fired oven. There are also tasty alcohol-free herbal tonics in case you need an antidote to all the wine-tasting. The hotel skews young and relatively inexpensive, qualities that can be hard to come by in Napa."
"The property has been massively overhauled and expanded, now featuring chic, midcentury modern-inspired fully renovated rooms; a new onsite eatery, House of Better; and additional guestroom concepts including a stand-alone bungalow, spa cottages, and a restored Victorian house. The pool area includes two geothermal mineral pools and plush lounge seating. The spa remains a focus with renovated treatment rooms, a new outdoor spa area, and indoor mineral baths." - Michelle Baran
