Cyrano's has been a go to spot my whole life and more so in my married years. The eclectic decor is a favorite. The hostess, to whom I had spoken on the phone only to be told they weren't taking reservations until later in the evening and that we should just walk in, and she asked if we had reservations and I mentioned our phone conversation and she just looked blank. Our waitress visited us quickly, but was all about calling us "guys" and, I hate saying this, but gave me gum-chewing-diner-waitress vibes, also, I'm not sure how she rang things in, but everything for our party of 4 came all at once to our rather small table. It was crowded, uncomfortable and difficult to enjoy. Apps and salads and mains really shouldn't all hit a tiny table in the same instant . Even if the table can take it, it's a service error.
We have had two not awesome experiences in a row, now, and it's disappointing. I am one of those people who finds what she likes on a menu and stays within those choices, generally. My husband is the type to sample something different each time. I got my usual Roasted Beet Salad, this time with an order of crab cakes. It was okay. The salad is bigger, it seems, and plated differently than in the past. Not terrible, but it was topped with just too much spring mix greens, making it hard to get to the beets and goat cheese, which is why you ordered it, plus the walnuts were just tosses on one corner of the plate, and the way it was put before me, I was surprised to discover them. They used to be a feature, on that plate the6 were an afterthought. The crab cakes were good, though over fried.
My husband was disappointed left and right. He got our former favorite thing, the NOLA BBQ shrimp. They've gone to larger shrimp, I noticed, hoping that would solve the problem of the shrimp routinely being over cooked. Unfortunately the shrimp were more over cooked than ever. I left my portion, having taken just one bite from the first shrimp and struggling to chew it. Husband thought the sauce had changed, too, though I didn't experience that. He also had the bacon wrapped meatloaf, which had, as it turned out, 3 layers of bacon. The inner layers were not cooked, making it largely inedible.
It seems like maybe they've increased portion sizes, and such, but instructions to the kitchen staff haven't been adjusted, maybe? Like whoever cooks the shrimp was accustomed to overcooking the large shrimp saw the jumbo ones and decided he really had to cook the life out of those big boys.
I took most of my food home, as that one bite of shrimp just sat in my belly like a rock. Husband left the meatloaf. Sadly, we didn't want dessert after all that mess and that's a shame, since they have som3 truly excellent desserts!
