"The Cugó Gran Macina Malta is housed in a massive centuries-old stone building, once part of the harborside fortifications in the Maltese city of Senglea, designed to lift entire ships out of the water with a large crane. Its sturdy structure and grand scale translate particularly well, after extensive renovations, into a one-of-a-kind luxury hotel." - Mitchell Friedman

"Why we love it: A design-forward hotel in a former fortress with some of the most spacious suites on the island The Highlights: - All-suite accommodations with modern design - A rooftop pool with sweeping Grand Harbour views - An on-site restaurant from award-winning chef Chris Hammett The Review: Built in 1554 by the Order of Saint John to protect the fortified city of Senglea from invaders, this ancient fortress now serves as one of Malta’s finest hotels. Home to just 21 suites, the cavernous property offers some of the roomiest accommodations on the island, each outfitted with vaulted ceilings, Italian furniture and spacious bathrooms done up in marble and black tile. Some of the largest suites also boast lofted sleeping areas, deep-soaking bathtubs, kitchenettes, and terraces, but all feature attractive, minimalist décor that complements the building’s original stonework and explains why Cugó is a member of Design Hotels. The hotel, which opened in 2018, also has a gorgeous rooftop pool, around which yoga and Pilates classes are frequently held. When hunger strikes, book a table at on-site Hammett’s Macina Restaurant, where you can pair Mediterranean-inspired cuisine by award-winning chef Chris Hammett with a bottle of wine from the hotel’s extensive cellar."

I can not possibly offer enough superlatives about our experience at this property without sounding like an unreliable reviewer. But this place is everything you want a 5 Star Hotel experience to be. The property itself is gorgeous and the Harbor View Suites are a decadent adventure in historic architecture and modern amenities. But as is the case with most high end properties, the staff are what makes this hotel special. We felt welcome and attended to in every aspect of our stay. The staff here work tirelessly to see that every guest is happy. When we had a small issue with the hotel restaurant the staff made sure it was corrected. When we are jaunting off for a boat charter again the staff made sure we were well equipped. If you can’t tell we loved this property and we will make sure we return.

We spent 6 days at cugo macina. We first had a room on the first floor which didn't have a lot of daylight. I would recommend to pick a room at second floor. The staff is amazing. Very friendly and professional. The enabled a room change and supported us with every question, requirement we had. We really enjoyed our stay. Thank you!

The perfect Hotel for your stay in Malta. Situated in a part of the old city defences and located in Vittoriosa within walking distance of the ferry services, it has perfect connections to Valetta. The rooms are luxurious, spacious and fitted with everything that is needed to make your stay comfortable. The staff provides an impeccable service and are just about the kindest, friendliest and most welcoming we have ever experienced. When we come back to Malta, we know where we'll be staying.

We went there for Christmas and we had a very beautiful room. Amazing, I should say. It was clean, quiet and big. They also offer a shuttle service from/to aeroport, which is convenient. Reception staff was not really involved as in order to reach the restaurant, you could/had to use another exit, however, in the little time we got to interact, they acted bored. I only gave 4* for the location because in order to reach Valetta becomes a palava if the ferry is not in service(being winter and windy, it happened to us on 3 days out of 7), and by bus it is a little challenging( you need to change buses, sometimes they do not stop to pick up as they are really full).

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Cugó Gran Macina, and it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. Nestled in a historic setting with a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern luxury, this hotel is truly a hidden gem. The architecture and design are breathtaking. The rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated, and provide stunning views of the harbor. The attention to detail in preserving the building's historical elements while offering contemporary comforts is remarkable. The staff were attentive, professional, and went above and beyond to ensure every aspect of our stay was flawless. From the warm welcome at check-in to the helpful tips about exploring the local area, the team’s dedication to guest satisfaction was evident. The on-site dining was exceptional, offering a variety of dishes that celebrated local flavors. Breakfast was a delight, with fresh options and a view to match. If you’re looking for a luxurious, peaceful getaway that offers a touch of history, incredible hospitality, and a picturesque setting, Cugo Gran Macina is the perfect choice. I cannot recommend it highly enough and am already looking forward to my next visit.

Corner suite with harbor view 9/2024 stay - If you can't decide whether you should stay here, you definitely should. It is so close to the airport (took a quick Bolt or the hotel can set you up transfer). The room is spacious with amazing views of the harbor. Bed is comfortable and a really spacious bathroom. The pool has amazing views and is great to cool off on hot days (or any day). It's a quick walk to the ferry to get to Valletta. After booking, the front desk was so helpful in helping plan our trip. After a cancelled sunset cruise with another company, they were able to set us up with Jack's Charters for a 4hr sunset cruise to the north and put together a picnic and it was all definitely a highlight. We appreciated the bottled water fill ups (stay hydrated!) and everything about the service was so kind and helpful. We will definitely be coming back any time we're in Malta. Thank you for an amazing stay.

I stayed at the this amazing hotel at the end of September for a few nights, I was there as part of a wedding party who had rented out rooms and the roof terrace /pool. It’s such an intriguing hotel due to the old architecture it utilises, so rooms are vast but full of character. The location is fantastic right by the harbour and a short cab ride to the airport (15mins). The breakfasts were delicious and a life saver after very boozy days and nights of celebration and staff were very friendly and attentive (which is always appreciated especially on a hangover.) The pool on the roof is an added bonus and great in itself (another hangover god send) especially with it being as hot as it was. It’s a few minutes walk to a bunch of different bars and restaurants that were all great.
