‘Free pastries after 6 PM’ is a great offer, especially given the higher prices here. However, I was surprised to be charged for them at 7 PM today. It seems that not all staff are on the same page about this policy, or perhaps it’s being applied inconsistently. This isn’t the first time I’ve run into this issue, and it’s disappointing as a regular customer. Experiences like this make me reconsider where I spend my money.

Cashier/staff were rude and overall got a judgmental vibe about the place. I bought a bagel and some bread and the bottoms were burnt. Insane for how overpriced everything is. You can buy the same stuff at Lassens down the street for a much better experience.

Just had the best vegan sandwich ever! The bread was fantastic and the combination between the spread/sauce and the different textures of the vegetables inside was just right. Pricey, considering the fact that it is a grab and go ( eat it somewhere else), but I was happy to pay for the flavour and the freshness. I didn’t do any shopping at the store, so can’t comment on anything else, but the service was great.

Never been here myself, but through the grapevine I heard of what happened to an employee who was fired for saying goodbye to coworkers after their shift was cut short. Pay that girl unemployment, make an apology and do better - then I’ll remove this bad review.

This is a fancy grocery with yummy things and good wine if you can stand the anhedonic hipster employees who merely punch numbers into the cash register and walk away dreaming their own dreams after you've paid. Cold and rude vibes.

Not cheap, but just the cutest old world speciality market with high quality items. They have some amazing frozen items like eggplant lasagna and chicken pot pie and fresh loaves of bread, veggies, meats and cheeses. They also have mouth watering baked goods and sandwiches. The place is tiny but worth a visit.

They hate dogs and are extremely rude. Would never give them my business. Just look at the other reviews.

Great place for the health and quality conscious snackers. Great fresh produce and deli-esque delights. Price is a little high and I always squirm about this kinda stuff, principally speaking. But the food honestly does not disappoint.

Nicely curated selection of very over-priced goods. I do appreciate the fresh, organic produce. But, those in the neighborhood can simply go to the farmers market on wed and Sunday half a block away.

I agree with the reviews on here that say the employees are beyond pretentious. No kind greetings or help. It feels very snotty. I love small, local markets and don't mind paying a bit extra for such- but not if I'm gonna leave the store feeling icked out by poor service. Do better

Didn't even say hello when I went in and when I checked out Seeing her do small talk with other people, she seems to just hate Asians.

Nice people. They carry burrata and sometimes guanchiale (call ahead). Lots of unique and boutique seasonings, oils, and culinary items. It's like a little farmers market in a store

Amazing produce and prepared foods but the employees have always given me extremely pretentious vibes and bad energy overall. I want to support this place but coming to this location always leaves a bad taste in my mouth w the negative vibes of the employees. Zero warmth. Maybe highland park is better. Do better cookbook! You are not Prada, even erewhon (where sometimes employees act like it's Chanel and can be pretentious) does a better job at being welcoming and emitting positive energy.

I've been back 3x this week just for the blood oranges that are in season. I asked the woman behind the counter if she tried the oranges and she said she baked a blood orange cake! Pretty sweet. Love that. Cookbook has an amazing selection of veggies & fruits in season, beautiful flowers, delectable cheeses, breads, pastries etc. etc. etc. Customer service has been generally friendly as well as helpful. My only gripe is that I've purchased some pricey meats, fish and poultry with expiration dates for the date I purchased when I wasn't planning to prepare it that day. So check expiration dates on meats and stuff if you aren't cooking immediately. I assume things will last a few days at minimum but not the case... Glad to hear that more locations are opening up. Highly recommend Cookbook.

Employees lack customer service skills- especially if you don't fit the "hipster"prototype. Would have purchased other items but after I saw the looks and heard the whispers I decided to leave. Steer clear off this location. Don't know if the owners are the same @Highland Park but never experienced that type of "hospitality" there.

I was surprised to see a little grocery store in a Neighborhood but I was looking for something specific. They have fruits and veggies along with pastries available. Besides that there was a lady here that gives the most personalized service. She made us feel very welcome to the point I had to write the good review!

My family and I walked into this beautiful mini grocery store spontaneously. I'm really glad we did. We were treated so kindly by Rav & Steven (hopefully I spelled their names correctly). Thank you again. I'm a big little shop supporter, everyone should give them a try!

I wanted to post an update on this. I didn't go back to the store for awhile but when I finally did decide to risk it again for Xmas, I told them what happened and they gave me a free loaf and some cookies, which was considerate. Luckily when i picked up it was still there.

Great selection on premium groceries. Here's to hoping they open a location near Culver City soon!

The best. It's LA's version of a high class bodega. I love it for sustainable meat, organic small farm groceries and a bunch of other little goodies.

Stopped by this charming shop to pick up some Kernal of Truth corn tortillas. Super cute and wish I lived closer so I could go a few times a week! BTW, you'll never want to go back to super market tortillas once you try Kernal of Truth!

I was out on a walk with my dog and saw this store and though well I could get a some bread for dinner tonight. Literally walked in the door and was told dogs are not allowed. 9 steps from front door to counter. Although she was trying to be nice about it. You could see she was uncomfortable telling me this. The other 2 employees just looked at me. Well I guess I could tie my dog up to a bumper on a car parked out front. First impressions say a lot. It doesn't look stroller friendly either as the aisle from door to counter is tight. I guess you could leave it outside, great for having your hands free for shopping. So I went to another store that had no issues with me having a dog. If you need to spend more than necessary and feel less than, knock yourself out and shop here.

Fancy fresh neighborhood market :) petite but full of interesting goodies! I just needed some change so I got a peanut butter cookie. Flaky crumbly and nutty. Yum. There were green almonds by the counter, I was definitely intrigued and the nice lady let me try one. It's basically like the fruit version where the dry almonds we know it are enclosed in. Fruit of the almond? The almond was definitely... Milky? Anyways I loved it and probably would go back to get a lb of that cause I've never seen it anywhere! The prices weren't actually too bad but comparable to other neighborhood-y natural markets.

A highly curated, pint-sized, maximally bougie corner store for the Echo Parkian willing to pay top dollar to reenact her breezy fantasy life as a 1960s Parisian, punctuated as it was with daily trips to the local grocer.

Cook book was my favorite , well curated food store . Any fruit or vegetable was incredible , well selected. Those days are over. The selection is poor , the quality too . Lackluster salespeople . higher prizes . it was great when it lasted . RIP

after my haircut at lucas last saturday, it was nice to discover this cute little foodie shop in the space where a really lame clothing store once stood...for about 3 months. (update 2020 -- I shave my own head and lucas is long gone) i grabbed one of those (forget the brand name) green bottles of sparkling water and a $3 egg biscuit, which was really two crustless slices of bread with an herb/eggplant omelette between them. solid, but maybe a wee bit spendy. (update 2020 -- still a wee bit spendy, but the deliciousness and creativity at cookbook is without equal. every trip there is a learning experience and inspiring culinary exploration) at any rate, cookbook feels like it is adding to the quality of the area, and hopefully their menu doesn't conflict or take business away from chango. (update 2020 -- chango is long gone and cookbook is holding down the authenticity on that wonderful stretch of echo park frontage) if this is the face of the new new gentrification, i'm kind of down. (update 2020 -- still down. burp!)

I stumbled into this shop cuz I am a cookbook fiend and I assumed they sold cookbooks. Left impressed by this tiny sliver of a grocer. Such a curated selection, laid out so smartly. Solidly embedded in the Echo Park neighborhood, this would be a convenient market to pop into if you needed to pick up a missing ingredient or two OR if you needed to do your weekly grocery run. Bonus: Cookbook's pastry display looked quite tempting too.

Cute place. Would definitely come again. A little put off by the customer service, I can't decide if I'm grateful or offended. I guess the moral of the story without telling it and putting anyone on blast with possibly very good intentions, is: Never assume the customer won't want to pay a high price for a quality item. I appreciate the transparency in letting someone know what they're about to pay, but the cheaper item I was talked into ended up being doughy on the verge of raw in the middle. So it wasn't worth it. Being talked out of a higher priced product is a lesson learned I won't repeat. Will do my best at the HP location next time.

I have been coming to Cookbook for over a decade, before it was bought out by Jon and Vinny's, and so, I feel compelled to give some notes about a decline in customer service and general air of pretentiousness in a specialty goods shop on a block formerly known as "chicken corner". I live in the neighborhood and like to splurge occasionally on the produce, cheese and meets and other featured items from time to time. I have for the most part engaged with friendly and warm staff over the years, esp the ones who were passionate about their products. I love when I can discuss grapefruit varietals with a friendly employee. Feels like that should be part of why one would frequent Cookbook and not , erm, Lassens. But lately, the general air is like the "new kid" who is way too cool for their own good. Stopped in today and there was ZERO engagement or exchange at the register. Instead just commentary about the employee hang out sesh in front. Pretty lame after dropping 40 bucks on eggs and coffee.

My husband and I LOVE Cookbook! We love that we can just walk here to get groceries as needed and he LOVES to get their Prociutto Dan's in the morning. I love that they carry a variety of items and most things seem to be locally sourced/organic. The space is tight but they work it out. The staff is aways friendly and helpful. It is mainly street parking here but I've never had a problem with finding parking nearby and walking over, as needed. It's a great alternative when you want to avoid crowds or lines at the grocery store. There's usually not much of a wait when you buy groceries here. I have also been pleased with the other hot items that they serve here if you don't have time to cook and want to eat something already made. Thanks Cookbook, are local grocery store! Now, if we could only figure out how to setup a delivery option with you, as needed.

Love this place. Hate the lines though. This market is so cute and quaint and packed. I do appreciate how precautious they are being during the pandemic. The produce here is always amazing. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about the products. They carry Bub and Grandma's bread! Definitely recommend!

Go here. My neighborhood favorite for fresh produce, anchovies, CA olive oil, cheese, chiles and other Epicurean treats. Don't sleep on the rye brownies, and they have ready to bake focaccia that you can doctor up with your favorite toppings for an easy dinner party pizza situation. Try 'Nduja sausage with tomatoes and basil or their smoked trout with arugula and crepe fraiche. The best.

I love this neighborhood grocery store. Like a few of the reviews mentioned below, it is on the pricey side, but the quality of the food you get here is really above and beyond what you could get at your traditional grocery store. I don't come here to do my weekly grocery shopping but I do come here for a few specific items. They have incredible bread - baguettes, loafs, individual sized options. I also love their sandwiches. They have one veggie option and one meat option - you can't really go wrong with either one. On the weekends these are usually gone by 2pm. My boyfriend swears by the canelé. And their fruit is always spectacular. They also have some packaged goods that I have yet to try like sauces and pastas but I bet they're good too. They also sell flowers - some by the bunches and some individually - that are so beautiful.

Chef's delight. Don't have your own garden, can't make it to farmers market. You can come here for heirloom produce and fancy meats and fresh pastas. The have some baked goods and delicious sandwiches too. Tiny space. Highland park location is bigger. Two small round tables outside to enjoy the pastry and sandwich. I had the egg salad sandwich($10) and it was so damn good w sprouts, dill, and lettuce. Don't know what it was about the bread(soaked in butter?) but was so damn good!

A DREAM. I wish I lived closer. Delicious everything. Go buy snacks for a party and everyone will adore you...

The employees at the Echo Park location so rude and condescending especially Anne. I wanted to like this place but every time I've been in here the "mean girl" employees make it literally impossible to enjoy shopping in peace. As a small business going through a pandemic with PLENTY of competition, you are the last place I will recommend to my friends or family to shop at. Dopolavoro in DTLA is where I will be taking my business. Their employees are always helpful and have never been rude to me.

This place is a bit pricey, but I have trouble saying that when I eat something that's so good. To go along with their grocery selection, they have packaged sandwiches for lunch. They vary by day, but I typically like to get the turkey sandwich with arugula on a baguette. Everything about it from the bread to the meat, cheese, and veggies is quality. Recommend to anyone that's in Echo Park looking for a bite. Just be prepared that it's going to be a $15 sandwich.

Cookbook has been a "savior" during COVID-19. But the store is so small that it's hard to social distance and folks are now standing in line to get in. I choose not to stand in lines, so will have to try going super early to get my eggs, cheese, gingerbeer and veggies. And if they ever get the chicken pot pies back...they're first on my list! Delish!! Now be prepared for some hipster attitude...not all the staff are pleasant. And guess they think a black girl visiting the store is a stranger from another planet...but FYI this has been my hood for 16 years! Yup..."the house that I live in...I bought it!"

OMG this Cali produce. I visited in the middle of winter, for bread and vegetables. The growing climate is a thing of beauty. There is nothing like this possible in Chicago or NYC. Freshly baked rye bread, freshly picked fruits and veggies, just-prepared sauces. Everything needed to execute cooking an amazing dinner, in a single storefront. Bravo, Cookbook!

Two stars for inventory, minus three stars for attitude. And minus another star for a lingering bad taste in my mouth because I now know I cannot justify shopping there again. I went in at closing time to buy a steak. I was willing to spend up to $30. After being tersely hurried along not once, not twice, but THREE times within literally thirty seconds of arriving in the store, It dawned on my that my business was not valued, and perhaps even resented at Cookbook. This, despite being admitted at the last moment in the first place. This is a nice store but the management/owner is suffering from a bit of an inflated sense of fabulousness, so much so that she felt perfectly justified in trying to simultaneously browbeat me for the privelege of buying something in her store and herd me out of the shop with a superior and disgusted gait. ... No, no, one thousand times no. Here's a newsflash: I was prepared to spend up to $40 there just now. I was just getting ready to select the shrinkwrapped packaged porterhouse steak I wanted when I was snappily herded along for the third and final time. Not only did this instantly inspire me to come home and make a quiche instead, but I felt so unwelcome I could not get out the door fast enough. I said I couldn't afford the steak (This is a big lie. At that stage I did not want to give them one penny of my money.), and then rushed out the door. I do not like to patronize establishments, no matter how well conceived, where I am made to feel unwelcome. I am just grateful I didn't trip over the lowered gate track when I stumbled in my hurry to get the hell out of there. I walked up the hill to my house thinking that I will be avoiding Cookbook in the future. If you had just waited ten or fifteen more seconds for me to choose my meat, you would be $26 richer today and several hundred or a thousand dollars richer in 2018 courtesy of my neighborhood business. The service and selection are hand over fist better at Lassens anyhow. I will be going there for specialty items from now on.

This little shop is just a GREAT discovery here in the area. They have organic corn masa for tortillas by Kernal of Truth!! Even have the limited to find anywhere I know of Queen and King Protea flowers. Super cute, gourmet store.

I walked in today to buy groceries. I counted 5 employees, all of which were much more concerned with organising and chatting amongst themselves than helping me as I stood in line. Not a greeting, or acknowledgment of my existence. It was totally bizarre. I kid you not at one point an employee finally walked towards me, but to rearrange tomatoes then cut me off as I was leaving after10 minutes of people watching the employees looking busy doing nothing?

I have been shopping here for over a year with my ESA support animal and have always been welcome. Except for today. I will never go back here again nor recommend it as I did just twice this morning at Homestate. I have made excuses for their trendy pricey items but no more. I realize that they are using the law to prohibit animals, but as I read it and hear from other markets, it is subjective to them, their situation and their choice. I am forced to realize that after all this time shopping there with my trained dog his updated papers and very specific reasons for having him with me they are not animal friendly. So bottom line is I have shopped there for awhile and now all of a sudden by their choice I am no longer welcome with my ESA animal. I can only conclude they are now an anti-animal, and discriminatory against mental health establishment. They actually told me to leave my dog out in the rain. Pretty disgusted by this place. Signed a long time resident, community activist, Animal rights activist, cyclist and artist in Highland Park.

It's a small space, be patient and kind-- it's worth it! I got the potato rosemary loaf, a big bag of watercress, and a few blood oranges. Everything tastes fresh. The bread didn't last long once I got it home. I'll be back!

As soon as I walked into Cookbook, I was greeted by a friendly employee. I asked, "is this a health food store?" She replied, "nope, just a little neighborhood market." That is a very accurate description. A neighborhood market with some finer items. The store itself is very small. That's okay because they make the most of the space. There's a little bit of everything here: fresh produce, a refrigerated section with prepared foods and bottled juices, a deli section, specialty cheeses, a meat section with fresh fish & meat and of course, cookbooks. I did see some cheeses and chocolate here that you wouldn't see on the average corner market. That's why I said that Cookbook offers finer items. It was lunch time when I was here, so I took advantage. I bought a slice of bread with smoked trout and herbed Ricotta cheese, a cold pressed ginger and limeade juice and some tomatoes. They weren't cheap, but they were great! Echo Park is lucky to have Cookbook in their neighborhood.

I love this place. The food is of the highest quality. All the baked goods are phenomenal. All the seasonal stuff is super fresh. I go here all the time! It's nice to go somewhere where you can exchange your milk bottles for a deposit, and the heirloom tomatoes are pretty much the best I've had. Angel cheese, olive loaf, and the pickled chili peppers they have are my favorite! It seems like a lot of the negative reviews have to do with being "rushed" which is kinda bizarre if you've ever been in the store. This isn't a big place, It's often standing room only because of its popularity. I'd liken the pace to going to grand central market, or the port for fresh meat- get your stuff, pay, bounce, enjoy! If you're looking to pontificate over produce maybe just go to Lassens down the street- where supply outstretches demand and you can chill as long as you want. If you want the best local organic, incredible stuff without going to the farmers market- cookbook ftw!

I love cookbook , i think it's a great local store that offers amazing local produce as well as fun items you can find anywhere else BUT I keep getting really rude / uncomfortable interaction with staff there . More than once has a manager been rude at the register and it sucks because it just makes the whole experience uncomfortable . This is about the fifth time this has happened and I would love to see an attitude change from staff because this store is amazing and is providing quality product but I'm over the ego .

Great grocery location in the neighborhood! All fresh produce, always attentive crew and it is limited but offers a very quality variety. The meat and the fish they have is very good and check out their spice blends. We also always get our bread (sesame sourdough) and eggs from here. It is not the least expensive option of course, but vegetables are seasonal and they have great olives.

Just had a very strange interaction at cookbook echo park. I love the cookbook stores and visit both frequently. I've never had a rude interaction - until today. I allowed a couple in the store to go in front of me in line, and they ended up ordering a lot of the inventory of salads and sandwiches, including the salad I intended to order. When the person behind the counter asked me what I wanted, I pointed to the salad I wanted and said that if there's enough for a portion, I would take it. I suggested that we combine the two salads and add some cauliflower to what remained of the kale. She agreed. Then, when she was filling up my portion, she was only choosing the flimsy chard leaves, so I reminded her that I was interested in the cauliflower to round out the portion. She snapped at me and said she could not choose out too much cauliflower because what about the person who comes next?! (There was no one behind me in the store, and the irony of her prioritizing both the person in front of me and the non-existent person behind me is quite rich!) I said nothing and paid. Two important facts: 1. these salads are pay by WEIGHT. 2. I am, like the customers in front AND the non-existent ones behind me, a paying customer. If I ask for more cauliflower, that means that I am *paying* for more cauliflower, because... math. So, all in all, I paid 6 dollars for an incomplete portion of lunch salad because this employee was saving it for the real and imaginary persons in front of and behind me. I held off on making any further purchases, as I had planned, because that was all the money I could stomach giving them today. Hoping for a better interaction next time, cookbook. You may be a well known store at this point, but please be kind, particularly to your regulars. On the other hand, I have had incredibly positive interactions at the highland park store. Maybe a different manager there.

Cookbook saves the day! This petit storefront in the heart of our neighborhood brings so much joy to locals and visitors alike; the tastiest homemade hummus and fresh baked olive bread pair perfectly (my go-to) plus a plump plum, perchance. The ladies are so kind, generous and have love + believe-in that shows every new day. These days, that smile goes a long way:)
