After reading numerous reviews touting "hot oil" on a pizza, my first thought was of an old movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (the original b & w, 1939 version), where Quasimodo dumps cauldrons of hot oil from the parapets of the old cathedral onto the hoi polloi below. All this in an attempt to save the peasant girl, Esmeralda, (played by a young Maureen O'Hara, truth be told, my first crush) from being burned at the stake.
Back to the pizza...NOOOO, not oil produced at a very high temperature causing mouth-roof burn. It's pepper-infused hot oil. And, it is just the right amount of heat. My foodie friend, Pots & Pans, and I are gaining weight eating our way through all the iconic pizza parlors in CT. This is definitely one of them. On a recent listing by The Daily Meal of the 101 best pizzas in the USA, Colony Grill ranked 43rd. We both agreed the pizza (all one size) is very excellent. The crust is super thin, just a little charred on the bottom. Definitely not chewy. The cheese was excellent, as was the sausage which we both ordered. It was definitely a unique experience that, we both agreed, was 5-star worthy.
Note that The Colony Grill has four locations in CT. We ate at the Norwalk location in a very warm, clean, inviting setting. Our server, Kelly, was great. All protocols for COVID were followed. Two things to end on: (1) Pots & Pans, as per norm, eats pizza with a knife & fork, and (2) it would've been so much better if Esmeralda was sitting across from me, instead of Quasimodo. Overall, TCG is definitely on our dance card for future dances!
