"If you’re a serious live music fan, or testing out if your summer fling might be in it for the long haul, you should know about Close Up on the Lower East Side. There’s a small bar up front where you can wait for the live music to start, but a night here is all about the performance room. The bar is well-named—the tiny back room is small enough to make even the biggest name (and they do get some serious acts on the weekends) feel as private as a studio session with a personal bartender. This does mean it’s the kind of jazz bar where you can’t really talk while the performance is going on, so it’s best used after you’ve already gotten dinner at one of our favorite spots in the neighborhood." - bryan kim, will hartman, willa moore, neha talreja, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah

"Close Up might be the most appropriately named bar or restaurant in NYC, because you’ll never be more than 15 feet away from the musicians. This relatively new spot on the Lower East Side serves creative cocktails in an intimate concert space, and draws some pretty big names on the weekends. If you’re a jazz aficionado, you’ll love Close Up for the music. If not, it's still a great place to take a date—as long as you respect the unwritten no-talking-while-music-is-playing policy." - neha talreja, bryan kim, hannah albertine, matt tervooren, will hartman

Had a good time here! Drinks were great, staff very friendly, atmosphere was amazing. However we were not as impressed with the live jazz set (band arrived 15+ min late, jazz style was a little too cacophonous for us and for some other people judging by the fact that some left the room before the show ended). Recommend the experience overall, but will be doing some research on the band next time.

I recently visited a this jazz bar twice that promised a great night of music, but unfortunately, my experience was a bit of a mixed bag. The first performance of the evening was definitely on the experimental side. While I appreciate jazz for its improvisational nature, this particular set felt a little too freeform, with some dissonance that didn’t quite land for me. The musicians were certainly talented, but the overall vibe was a bit scattered—interesting but not very cohesive. However, things took a turn for the worse with the second performance. It was as if the entire band had completely lost sync with one another. The rhythm was all over the place, and it felt like no one was really on beat. The musicians seemed to be playing in their own worlds, which made for a frustrating and uncomfortable listening experience. I couldn’t tell if it was a lack of rehearsal or just a bad night for the band, but it was jarring and not at all enjoyable. While the venue itself had a great ambiance. the drinks were not strong enough to enjoy the performance, the music left much to be desired. I'll definitely give this place another shot, but I hope they get their act together

This has been the most amazing jazz bar I’ve been too and honestly I’d drive 7hrs again from Canada to Close Up just to experience it once more. It’s my first jazz bar in NYC and I think I’ve found my spot. If you’re visiting or curious about this place— definitely go there, you won’t regret it. Their 5 stars review are justified. Thank you for the amazing night, it’s a memory I’ll cherish!

Close Up is our favorite hang in lower Manhattan. They're friendly, relaxed, and unpretentious. The music is consistently excellent, the empanadas are yummy, and the drinks have seriously improved in the last six months. We've been four times since opening night (a lot for us, as we live hundreds of miles away). Daniel and Sol have done a terrific job running the space and bringing in talented musicians and staff. Couldn't recommend more for folks who want a really immersive and interesting jazz hang. Also nice that there's two spaces, one to hang out front and another that is dedicated to the music. Like I said, very immersive. 5/5.

Ordered the Pabellon with Churrasco (Skirt Steak), was tender and delicious, and a generous portion of meat for the price point (20$) especially in this part of the city. I enjoy hanging out in the front room and doing my own thing. Yvonne Rogers band was cookin this evening doing their thing, some strong ensemble playing in the listening room. I’d recommend either the music or the food. JE

Yelp
Incredibly tasty and original cocktails with unique ingredients, great tapas including empanadas, and personable service with a warm, chic ambience. Top notch jazz acts booked weekly as well, world class musicians for a low cover. Well done!

Yelp
This is my second time at this AMAZING jazz club located on the lower east side. The musicians are world class, the Venezuelan tapas are delicious and the space is super cozy. I booked out the club for my friend's 60th birthday and we had a fabulous time! Service and drinks are also on point!
