Just another day at the office...
Office canteens are open to the public here. This sounds bizarre and maybe not desirable as going for lunch at my workplace is a risky business (or any kind of canteen for that matter), so it may not sound like the most attractive option for getting fed. That, however, is until you hit minimalist looker Kantine, which is part of David Chipperfield Architects' revamped office grounds in the heart of Mitte.
Just go in, browse the food, ask what it is (English, german, whatever) order then sit. Their daily menu offers a choice of three eclectic mains as well as a selection of freshly baked goods. It's not particularly expensive but it's tasty, hearty fare, made with locally sourced quality ingredients. Fill up on complimentary bread and tap water if you're skint, otherwise don't deny yourself the delicious dessert tarts.
Kantine combines the best of a work place canteen (namely great value, low-priced dishes) with the good food of a trusty local eatery and the sleek concrete interiors and pleasing aesthetics that you'd expect from a world class design studio. That's like getting all the perks of working there, without having to endure a soul-zapping architectural degree :-)
