"More Than Cheese and Wine... Cheese connoisseurs, welcome to heaven. Casa Gonzalez has been serving up the widest selection of queso (cheese) with an authentic flair for years. The wine list does not disappoint and somehow the service is always smiling, even when the bar is packed. If you’re not a cheese lover, fret not, there is an assortment of Iberico meats on offer, tapas, and even their olive oil toast is delicious. Expect it to be busy on weekends, as the central location makes it a prime hangout for many Madrileños."

"You know you're living your best European life when you step off a cobblestone street into a cheese shop, pick out a few quesos and a bottle of wine, and sit down at a marble table by the window to enjoy them. That's the allure of Casa González, founded in 1931, a hybrid gourmet shop–tapas restaurant where you could spend hours grazing and sipping. While the posher vinotecas in the neighborhood fill up with see-and-be-seen locals, Casa González draws a down-to-earth crowd that's here for nothing more than good food and a good time. The menu revolves around Casa González's expertly purveyed charcuterie and conservas (canned seafood and other delicacies), so it pays to give whomever's behind the counter carte blanche to make you a cheese plate with the best stuff." - Benjamin Kemper

My most favourite place in Madrid ❤️ If you love wine, cheese, fabulous and friendly service and a warm atmosphere this should be your very first restaurant/shop to visit. To add meat is served also but I didn't try it (I'm vegetarian). I went to a different wine and cheese bar before this and received very unhelpful and unpleasant service so left (see my other review) BUT I am so glad I did. Casa Gonzalez is a gem I would wholeheartedly recommend. The gentleman who served me made several recommendations for a Vermouth, wine and cheese which was helpful, but not pushed in any way. I decided to have a Spanish cheese board, which comprised of 5 cheeses and a quince jam chutney with crackers and bread. They were all utterly delicious although I was a little sceptical about the goats cheese. My total bill was 23 euro... which was for a Vermouth, 2 glasses of wine and the cheese as well as a dish of olives. My only regret was finding Gonzalez on my last evening. I'll be sure to return! Enjoy ❤️

Google
What a brilliant find! We came here hoping to have some cheese and wine, and stayed for much longer than we anticipated because the service, the food, the wine, the atmosphere, the decor was phenomenal. The server (the one with the Keith Haring tattoo) was amazing, attentive and full of zest! I also had a Spanish omelette with padron peppers and it was by far the best omelette I have had in Spain so far. Highly recommend stopping in here!

Google
The best casa in Madrid. Real local food, excellent wines, absolutely perfect service. Don't hesitate to visit and enjoy delicatessen. If you have to wait for table, just wait - it's definitely worth. One of the rare places which I really want to visit again.

Google
How lucky we were to stumble upon this little gem. We had no idea of where we were or what we were going to find. Casa Gonzalez is a wonderful, quaint shop that sells Iberic ham and other specialties, cheeses, wines, Olive oils, etc. It looks much like a butcher or deli shop, but also features some tables where you can sit and enjoy a nice meal. The place is small, yet very popular with the locals especially. The service was wonderful and personable, the food very fresh and interesting, and the wine selection is very impressive, all for a very reasonable price. We had an Iberic charcuterie plate, a cheese plate, wines and a very enjoyable time. It was all delicious and perfect.

Google
Casa González is a super Deli and wine store with a small area to have small plates made either their own deli products. It is an incredible experience for anybody wanted to try good Spanish wines with selected cheeses and cured meets like Spanish ham.

September 2022 - I forgot to post this review. Very nice place to have an aperitif, very well furnished place, tasty food, the staff gave us good advice. Excellent for aperitifs, but a little less if you really want to have dinner.

I attended along with a tapas tour and have to say this was my favourite spot of the night. Sat in the cosy back room, passing the wonderfully stocked shop in the front. We sampled a number of absolutely delicious dishes. The waiter was flamboyant and friendly and added a smile to everyone's face. He really made an effort to make sure everyone was happy and enjoying themselves. Without the tour I probably would have missed out on visiting this amazing store/eatery but I know if I ever return to Madrid it will be top of my list for returning to.

Google
A great place to have lunch. We ordered a half portion plate of Spanish cheeses and some wine. The waiter proposed us to eat the cheeses in a specific order, from milder to spiciest. That was really nice. Must visit that place

Yelp
One of the most memorable meals from our trip to Spain. Casa Gonzalez is a wine and cheese shop with options for takeaway or some seats to eat in the front and back of house. We sat in the back and ordered a couple of glasses of wine along with a jamón ibérico and manchego plate. They provided olives, bread and crackers complimentary. It was so delicious! A simple meal but of such high quality. It also all cost under $25. This place may seem simple or unassuming, but it was so special! An authentic experience to really enjoy some of the best wine, cheese and jamón Spain has to offer!

Yelp
Quaint shop offering delicious cheese and wine selection. The staff is friendly and helpful in providing the perfect experience for your visit.

Yelp
I stopped by Casa González recently and tried a couple of their tapas. I'd rate the overall experience 8.3/10 - Tosta de atún ahumado (Smoked tuna on toast): 8.5/10: Good pieces of flavourful and smokey tuna that had a good texture. Went well with the toast and wine - Tosta de Arzúa con membrillo (Arzúa cheese and quince on toast): 7.8/10: Good cheese on toast - Tosta de sobrasada con miel (Sobrasada with honey on toast): 8/10: Pork was decent and the honey added a nice touch with its sweetness - Red Wine: Alceño 150. D.O. Jumilla. Monastrell: Oaty, clean and smooth

Yelp
One of the older tapas restaurants in Madrid. The Gonzalez family has been serving tapas for many decades. Great service, and a number of wines and beer available.

Josephine B.

Yelp
Cute little place for tostas and tostadas. They have a great collection of cheese, wine and sardines. Service was good. It can get quite hot in the back area of the restaurant

Yelp
Highly recommend this gem of a tapas and wine bar. Strolling around Madrid after a delayed flight, I really has no idea where to go and what to do, so I ended up walking the streets and looking for an inviting place to enjoy some bites for dinner. I saw how busy this place was and once the door opened I could not escape the delicious smell of cheese, charcuterie and wine. Had to wait for a few minutes to be seated, and ordered a tosta with whipped goat cheese mixed with salsa mojo and the chipirones (baby squid) in olive oil. Both came promptly and were finger licking good. Their wine list is extensive, many wines are available by the glass, or you can purchase a bottle from their excellent selection of Spanish wines. Red, white, sparkling, rosé and dessert wines are all on the menu. Wish I had more time in the city to treat myself to more of their bites and wines, but I highly recommend this bar that has been established in 1931.

Karina L.

Yelp
This place is totally awesome. The white wine, Verdejo, it's delicious, we ate a raclette fundido. The service is prompt, nice and very cool. I highly recommend this place if you are in Madrid to have a pleasant moment with friends, family and also a date.

Suzanne Z.

Yelp
So many great food establishments and tapas places in Madrid, but not this establishment. Unripe tomatoes in salad, pork cheeks with a sauce contained a tart liquor that overwhelmed the senses in a bad way, waitress failed to deliver olive oil for bread after asking multiple times, muscles in sauce truly disappointing. stale crackers. Cheeses sold in front market look lovely.

Derrick W.

Yelp
Amazing place to buy some authentic tinned items to travel home with. The service by Danny was excellent! And fantastic tapas and wine to relax too if you so desire. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Went there years ago and had fun but this visit was embarrassing. Seated in one of 4 tables for 2 in the back room. The remaining tables were arranged in one long table for tour group "shows". Every 1/2 hour while we were there, a group would fill the table, receive one tapas they had not chosen and poured a red or white wine they did not choose. A tour guide would then explain how that they were in a "real" Spanish wine bar. After 30 min., this noisy disturbance would repeat, imagine the commotion of changing dishes, wine glasses, etc. My wife and I decided to order pate and cheese to have with our wine. The menu offers 9 pates, the waiter told us they were out of all of them but one, a pricey small cut that was twice the price of the others, we ordered it. We decided to order a cheese plate and the waiter immediately pointed to the mixed cheese plate that was (guess what) twice the price of the other cheese plates and the cheeses were not specified. The cheese plate included cheeses that are standard on all Spanish breakfast buffets and a slice of bleu cheese that we don't like to have with wine. How does one say laughable tourist trap in Spanish?

Yelp
Good spot with good jamon iberico, delicious tostas, and good wine. It wasn't really busy and waiter was not as attentive as I would have liked or what I was used to in other spots in Madrid. But overall a good dining experience. We had two tostas which were both delicious and only 5-6 euro each! (Jamón ibérico con manchego and Lacón con brie) The simple "Pimientos de piquillo asados con piñones" was also very tasty and a great option as a salad appetizer. It is peppers with garlic and white beans I think. Enjoyed it much more than I thought. A lot of locals come here so that's a good sign, but tourists also know about it from the reviews online. Would return here if I was in the area.

Shawn H.

Yelp
Solid spot, with very good jamon iberico, a solid sobrasada spread, and some really good cheese, including a funky blue that my wife and I both loved. Good food, pretty moderately priced.

Landy G.

Yelp
Initially I came here while on a food and drink tour on my vacation in Spain. One thing we sampled was what they call "Sabrosada" on toast with honey. It appears to be some sort of chorizo spread on bread with sweet honey. I immediately became obsessed. So we came back a week later on our last day in Madrid. It was very packed. We were told it was full and could wait or come back later. We had nothing else planned and made it our mission to eat here one last time before leaving Spain. We were told the seats would be available sooner than they expected which was great. After about 10-15 minutes we were sat. Very great service. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. We had 3 orders of the sabrosada toast to satisfy our craving one last time. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Madrid.

Lisa I.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick snack after doing a lot of walking around Madrid and it was much needed. We had a half order of Jamon Iberico and a cheese sampler, along with two glasses of wine. It was unseasonably warm for a fall day in Madrid, so cooling off here felt great! Service was fast and we were able to order in English and perused the menu that had English on it. Great for a quick bite to eat!

Yelp
I was beyond excited to finally indulge in the tostas experience in Madrid. I heard that Casa Gonzalas was the place to go, so we headed on over for what was an amazing experience. Very small with only a few tables, Casa Claridge looks more like a local shop than a restaurant. Either way, the second we sat down, we were greeted with friendly service and amazing food/drinks. They have an excellent wine & champagne selection, so we drank a bit of both. Each glass seemed better than the previous one and it was evident that these were quality bottles. They brought out tostasconsisting of different breads topped with various cheeses. I don't know how they made these breads, but they were lights out delicious. The cheeses were amazing and the bread was toasted and buttered perfectly. The combination was the best bread and cheese I've ever had. The greatest part about this place is that the prices for both the drinks and tostas are very inexpensive. For an experience this good in an atmosphere this unassuming, you're literally paying a fraction of what you'd pay at a more formal restaurant. This place is low key, casual and authentic. Casa Gonzalez is an absolute must if traveling to Madrid!

Tom V.

Yelp
Found this place from reading reviews online. They have a great selection of wines and is known for their tostas...which is like a french bread pizza, but way better toppings and bread. We got a few tostas including the tuna and the jamon Iberico, but the best thing we had was the sobrasada balear con miel. Think of it as a quality pepperoni sausage, smeared on fresh french bread, baked and then drizzled with honey. Damn tasty! Service was very busy and not as friendly as some other tapas bars we went to, but overall a good experience. Definitely, make it one of the stops on your bar hopping.

Merry M.

Yelp
Perfect place to have wine and taste jamon and cheese. Three of us ordered the half order of jamon iberico botella and the half order of the cheese sampler. It was the absolute perfect amount of food with us barely finishing the last few pieces of cheese. The waiter explained which cheeses to eat first and which one to eat last. I love how passionate they are about the food here. The jamon was so delicious. Salty, flavorful and melts in your mouth. A perfect pairing for cheese and bread or crackers. We also tried the vermut since my friend said it was a thing here in Spain (Vermut hour). We really enjoyed the selection and I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a wine bar with a great variety and to pair with the famous jamon and cheese.

Dave H.

Yelp
I could spend the whole day here. So cool to see the locals coming in to buy bread and chatting while they have wine. The owner was so friendly and patient with us. Everything was perfect. Highly recommend!

Sabrina C.

Yelp
Cozy and very charming place to have some tapas and wine in Madrid. The menu for tapas is quite extensive and so are the wines. They also sell wines by the bottle and some of them are quite cheap ! I tried the tostas which is toasted bread with different toppings; a lot like a pincho but bigger in side. We tried the olive pate , tuna and sardines. All of them were really good and the prices are affordable. Staff can be a bit busy but friendly nonetheless.

Lumi P.

Yelp
very cozy place with a lot of variety of food. we stopped for a snack. the iberico ham and melted cheese was delicious and the calabresse salat very fresh and tasty. the serving was also good provided very professionally by a young lady in a very good english. very nice place which i recommend.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Staff is very friendly and speaks English. Their selection of wine is large. The place that looks like a grocery store is super charming.

Jeannie L.

Yelp
Very nice little wine and cheese bar! Comfy and great selection of wines, cheeses and meats to enjoy in the bar or to take away. Great selections of all. I will definitely be back next time I am in Madrid.

Paul B.

Yelp
I am in love with this place! I came here last night, first time in Madrid, in the midst of many tapas bars (like #3 of 8 or so). I rely on Yelp when I travel and it got high reviews, so I stopped in. One reviewer said to try the Tosta Jamon Iberico... I did. I must admit I was unimpressed. Good quality toast and ham but very light on the tomato sauce and really nothing to write home about, or Yelp. I came back on my second day, looking for my last taste of Madrid before headed to Berlin, mostly because of the wine. This place has a FANTASTIC collection! I am a California wine enthusiast and I like beer too. Most of the 100's of tapas bars have just a few bottle selections and the local beer. This place has a fantastic wine selection! I had one glass and was in love. Found another place later at the Mercado San Miguel and I have to say in fact I think I like Spanish wines better than California!! Certainly my favorite in Europe, including France. So that's why I came back. I didn't think I could, but my flight to Berlin is late and I went for a run in the Retiro so I was hungry and why not... I'm in Spain, so, more wine! This time I ordered the Jamon Braseado con Aruza and it was incredible. Had another glass of the wine I had last night, the Tilenus, D.O. Bierzo (Mencia), and the sweet ham and melted cheese blended with the spicy wine perfectly. Loving life, I was tempted by the waiter to try something else and had a glass of Bellmunt, D.O.C. Rioja. Just as good but different. Still hungry, I ordered another Tosta, the Sobrasada Balear con Miel. OMG. The best thing I've eaten in Europe (London, Paris, Madrid, so far). Amazing blend of chorizo, potato, tomato and who knows what else... Spanish love I guess. So I'm yelping! Come to Casa Gonzalez if you love wine and want a Tosta. You will not be disappointed. Speak up about what you're looking for. They speak a little English and are happy to help. Really nice people.

Michael J.

Yelp
I did a little research on best tapas bars in Madrid and was intrigued by what I read about Casa Gonzalez. It's hidden away in a quaint neighborhood, and is both a restaurant and a store. We were starving after traveling all night and not eating during the day. We started with some nice cold beers, that went down so nicely. We decided, with the help of our waiter, to try a sampling of Spanish cheeses and jamón. What a pleasant surprise. Everything was so delicious. The men working there were so nice and helpful. It was a great introduction into Spanish cuisine and culture. Would definitely go back.

Adam R.

Yelp
We got in here just before they closed the kitchen, we promised to get our order in quick and did. They had a guy playing an accordion and everyone one up front was dancing and singing, basically when we walked in it was a mini party going on. We ordered a bunch of their tostas and their wild boar stew and everything was fantastic. -Gulas - I'd been wanting to try these and really enjoyed theirs. I think I'm going to need to track down the real deal. - Jamon - I really haven't been able to go wrong with any thing with Jamon on/in it in Madrid. - a couple other things I forget -Wold boar stew - order this, trust me it's like Spanish mom cooking. This place is fun and homey, I really want to come back and work on more of their menu on anther visit to Madrid. All in for 4 people was E55, not bad at all.

Sailor K.

Yelp
Cute authentic cafe in the authors area.. live music. Great food and wine selection. Good service

Kimi W.

Yelp
Delicious tapas and wine, we ordered a glass of red wine like Merlot that our waiter recommended along with the foie with fig jam, jam on iberico de bellota, and the honey and cheese toast. All were super delicious and we even ate the olives even though we weren't fans of olives but these ones were salty or overpowering. Highly recommend for casual midday pre siesta tapas

Mathias A.

Yelp
Best snack and lunch in town. See pretty moustached Gonzalez walking in and out of this shop & restaurant and try one of his toasted breads. Top them with anchovis, Galician melted cheese and ham or beanspread. Take some Spanish wine with it.

Nicole B.

Yelp
Lovely little wine and cheese shop! We ordered wine and a cheese plate, everything was delicious and our service was great. Makes the perfect first stop during an evening of tapas bar hopping.

Hara H.

Yelp
Yes!!!!!! A must go! The wine is to die for-if you are planning on having more that one between two people-just buy a bottle-it's cheaper. The food was delicious and the two waiters were great. One was hilarious and made trumpet noises when he delivered your food! Go!

James O.

Yelp
It's just silly how great this place is. Not even a little fancy, yet as classy as any restaurant charging 5X the price. What Casa Gonzalez does is: serve delicious local tostas, cheeses, jamons, and wines at superb prices, with a smile. Jamon Iberico con Tumaca (Iberian ham with tomato sauce) or Atun Ahumado (smoked Tuna) on fresh-toasted bread and a glass of Grego Grenache will set you back only 7ish euros. If you ain't happy after; you didn't want to go to Madrid. The place is tiny, but extremely popular with locals so try "off hours". Make the 10 minute walk up the beautiful cobblestone streets from El Prado (where the prices are twice as high and the quality is half as good). You're welcome!

Juhi B.

Yelp
Best wine, cheese! Must try place. This is where the locals come for their meats, cheese and wines. Not much to look at from the outside but this place has been in business since 1931! Highly recommend it!

Kim L.

Yelp
We ate here a couple of nights ago and it was excellent! It was very busy but we still were seated right away. The thing to get here is definitely the Serrano ham. The cheese plate was divine!! Of course everything here is excellent, and although the place is a bit loud and crowded, it is authentic in every way. I highly recommend a visit here while in Madrid!!

Kristina G.

Yelp
Good tapas. They don't have bravas, but they have a lot of tostas to choose from, making it harder to share! Get the carrillada en salsa
