With just one day in Madrid it can be hard to choose what to do. A perfect day in the Spanish capital could involve a rowboat ride in the Retiro, a stroll down Gran Via to enjoy Madrid’s impressive (and impressively different) architecture, and—as a reward for all that activity—a taste of Iberian cheeses and meats. Alternatively, soak up the morning views from Circulo de Bellas Artes, and while away the afternoon relaxing in Madrid’s botanical garden. Credit: Collected by Brandy Bell, AFAR Local Expert

Western Park

Park · Casa de Campo

"Sunset Spot Parque de Oueste is a shady park toward the north of the city. The park is known for its rose gardens, as well as being home to the Temple of Debod, a gift for the Egyptian state in 1968. The overlook of the park offers beautiful views of the Royal Palace and the larger Casa Del Campo. It's an ideal spot to split a bottle of wine with friends and watch the sunset after a long day of exploring Madrid ."

El Retiro Park

Park · Jeronimos

"Don't miss Parque del Retiro—a stunning area complete with a lake, playgrounds, gardens, and fountains. It's the perfect public space where anyone can enjoy the day by taking a walk, playing a game, going on a boat ride, or exploring to your heart's content."

C/ Gran Vía

Notable street · Justicia

"An Architectural Mix Along the Grand Via in downtown Madrid , you look up at the buildings, and one will make you feel like you're in Paris , then another like you're in New York. The architects were given a lot of freedom when it came to designing the buildings along the way, and they have truly outdone themselves."

Circulo de Bellas Artes

Cultural center · Cortes

"Circulo de Bellas Artes—Overlooking Madrid When in Madrid , I highly recommend to visit Circulo de Bellas Artes. The views from the rooftop of the Fine Arts Circle is breath taking. Buy a ticket at the reception, speed up to the roof and stand by the feet of Goddess Minerva. Highly recommended during sunset with a glass of wine in hand."

Real Jardin Botanico

Botanical garden · Jeronimos

"Serenity in Madrid's Botanical Gardens Real Jardin Botanico, the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid , is a peaceful place to get out of the city streets and stroll around in nature. Fountains and sculptures are scattered throughout the 5,500 species of living plants, trees and flowers. While nothing feels too exotic, scenes like a stray cat sipping water amongst Matteuccia Struthiopteris (Ostrich Fern) as a fountain drips from above, remind you that the simple things are just as special as the extraordinary."

Casa Gonzalez

Gourmet grocery store · Cortes

"More Than Cheese and Wine... Cheese connoisseurs, welcome to heaven. Casa Gonzalez has been serving up the widest selection of queso (cheese) with an authentic flair for years. The wine list does not disappoint and somehow the service is always smiling, even when the bar is packed. If you’re not a cheese lover, fret not, there is an assortment of Iberico meats on offer, tapas, and even their olive oil toast is delicious. Expect it to be busy on weekends, as the central location makes it a prime hangout for many Madrileños."

Sorolla Museum

Temporarily Closed

"Visit Sorolla's House and Gardens The former house of Joaquín Sorolla is now a museum dedicated to his life. The walls of the house hold not only his own work but very personal mementos from his life, and even the art of his friends. These details make it feel as though Sorolla will stroll in from the back garden at any moment. An often overlooked museum, but one worth your time if you enjoy getting into the mentality of the artist. My favorite touch is the fountain in the garden, which is a miniature replica of one from the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain . Photo by Eduardo/Flickr ."
