Tony had a francesinha (a sandwich made of sliced bread, steak, sausage, linguiça, cooked in a sauce of beer, port wine, spice, tomato, and a lot of cheese melted on top).

"A Porto establishment known for its rendition of the francesinha, the indulgent, multi-meat, cheese-smothered sandwich often recommended as a substantial cure for a rough morning after drinking." - Ashlea Halpern

I am Portuguese from Porto. So listen to my review as you should. Please skip this place, this is insanely terrible. I have had all francesinhas you can imagine. The francesinha is terrible, look at the pictures. It is super small compared to everywhere else Look at the steak, it doesn't even look like real meat The other fillings are terrible The sauce is mid. I do not understand the hype. The price is insane, basically on the list of more expensive francesinhas. The service is terrible as well. It gets super full so you have to wait outside but they won't manage the line So people just gather outside randomly and then you to be permanently making sure nobody that arrived after you goes in first. So the experience is terrible from the first to the last second. Ah forgot to say. The fries are, incredibly, also terrible...

There’s no quicker path to start a fight than to ask who served the best francesinha- but most people from Porto will list this location as a top contender! Excellent fast and friendly service, generous portions. And you should not expect this, but my server was kind enough to give me a free taste of some aged port wine on the house! Anthony Bourdain would have loved this place- come check them out!

We stopped here at the recommendation of Miguel at Hertz Ride. As he said we should eat a Francesina while in Porto and this was the place to go. He was not wrong, its probably in the top 5 things I've ever eaten. Great atmosphere plus friendly and efficient service. Great value and a thoroughly authentic Porto experience. This is a must on any trip to this city.

My wife and I were in Porto while on our honeymoon and I really wanted to try a Francesinha. We found O Afonso on google search and hadn’t realized how famous it was until we go there. We had to wait a bit before being seated, but this was because of a few large groups finishing up. Once seated, service was great and the Francesinha was amazing. Highly recommend if you’re in Porto!

This restaurant has amazing F1 vibes with tributes to the brilliant late Ayrton Senna. The late Anthony Bourdain also famously visited this place, so adding to the validation. The best dish is definitely the franceshina. Cutting into it may take some effort, but every mouthful is deliciously cheesy and chockful of meat. The Afonso Hamburger is also another great option for hearty burger lovers. Fries are well cooked and not oily. Children and adults would love the fresh potato taste of each fry. Service is fast and efficient despite the crowd. Hats off to the waiters who rush around and are attentive.

Excellent service and location. We've had Francesinhas, which where somehow unknown and unecpected to us. Food was good and definetely worth the price. Same is valid for the drinks. (We even had port whine on the house. ;) Clear recommendation from my side. Thanks for the fantastique evening!

Is a review even necessary at this point? I think it goes without saying that this a must visit restaurant in Porto, even without the Anthony Bourdain stamp of approval (although this is why we came). The tribute wall to Anthony Bourdain was very touching and made it feel like a special place to be, and we got lucky getting in quite quickly before a big lineup arrived! We of course had the Francesinha, which came with a mountain of crispy thin cut fries which were excellent at soaking up the delicious gravy (they brought more halfway through). Absolutely worth the hype and if you are going to have a Francesinha, have one here.

What an amazing place. Some of the best service I've ever had in a restaurant. Very attentive but in a casual and not overbearing way. They've even treated me to a small glass of port wine for dessert. Francesihnas were delicious including fries which were crispy and salted just enough. Great atmosphere with lots of interesting photos and memorabilia. I could see the owner cooking my francesihna in the kitchen. Thank you to the team - I've had a great time here.
